Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert Book Summary

Book Two in the Magnificent Dune Chronicles—the Bestselling Science Fiction Adventure of All Time

Dune Messiah continues the story of Paul Atreides, better known—and feared—as the man christened Muad’Dib. As Emperor of the known universe, he possesses more power than a single man was ever meant to wield. Worshipped as a religious icon by the fanatical Fremen, Paul faces the enmity of the political houses he displaced when he assumed the throne—and a conspiracy conducted within his own sphere of influence.

And even as House Atreides begins to crumble around him from the machinations of his enemies, the true threat to Paul comes to his lover, Chani, and the unborn heir to his family’s dynasty...

Necessary Prologue. Slower than its predecessor but necessary to set the next in the series; very much the second book of a trilogy. Dune Messiah shows the depths of the Aestrides’ gifts and commitments to the timeline. I enjoyed the plots and weaves and very much am looking forward to the conclusion in Children of Dune.

Phenomenal Sequel. Instead of trying to surpass the achievements of Dune, this sequel capitalizes on the former’s triumphs by expanding on the themes of political intrigue, predestination, power locus, and the nature of despots. It eschews action for philosophical underpinnings and delivers a plot showing the overlapping curses of prescience, deification, and leadership. Herbert avoids cheapening the first novel by not giving Paul a happy ending. Paul, now Emperor, develops an awareness that his visions, his reluctant exaltation, and his people shape him into a monster, commit atrocities in his name, and lead him to myriad ruinations. A lesser author would’ve succumbed to fan service, but Herbert instead gave a unique story that has a gravity of its own.

THIS BOOK BROKE ME. As the first book it’s wonderfully written and engaging but WOW it broke me in every way it could. My heart is in shreds and I can only pray the third gives me renewed vigor to finish the series. No spoilers but uhhhh NO ONE IS SAFE in this story. Incredible political commentary though, for sure.

Dune messiah. Not his best work. Slow and drawn out.

Great follow up!. Definitely a heavier read than dune, but was an excellent addition to the series.

A great follow up. The world is already built from the first installment so this one plops you right into it. It also adds more interesting story elements, new characters, and brings back some old ones. The philosophical, religious, and ecological themes of the book are still as top notch as the first. This one dives deeper into the politics of the emperium. If you’ve just finished the first book and are looking at reviews and wondering if you should continue the saga, this is your sign.

Solid Sequel. A wonderful read that fails to live up to the majesty of the first installment. But rather than reflect poorly on Dune Messiah, it only makes you appreciate the original all the more.

Great book…. A fitting end for an emperor

Better than the first book. It’s interesting to me that people dislike this installment with such fervor. I found it deeply compelling, rich, and I couldn’t help but love it. Mind blown

Good, but not great.. This book was decent, but when compared to Dune, it is a pale shadow. Dune gripped the reader from the start, kept you reading page after page. The development of the story was rich and flowed smoothly. Events transpired without confusion or large gaps in the story. This book lacked almost all of those elements. Unless you are dedicated fan of the Dune series I would recommend stopping with Dune.

Still unsure how to pronounce ‘Tleilaxu’. A worthy sequel to the first novel. What I liked about this one is that the narrative felt more focused. This sequel expands upon the Dune universe with new characters and deeper lore. The two main plots tie in well at the the end too. And, of course, the novel is wonderfully written.

Underrated. People are mixed on this book but I thought it was an excellent addition to the Dune series!

A glance into Paul’s strife. This book shares the pressure on Paul & grants him a sense of fulfillment at the cost of our own. Sharing the weight on top his shoulder is what cements him as a legend to us, the reader.

Excellent. A truly lovely and breezy follow up to dune. Worth every moment

SLOW GOING. I wanted more action, but it came up short in that department again. I will stop reading the Dune Chronicles, after the Children of Dune, since I purchased it at the same time as Dune Messiah.

Very different very well written. Very different than Dune. Very heavy on palace intrigue and philosophy. Enjoyable read if you don’t expect constant action.

Ranks up there with Mr. Herbert’s first book...Dune. Almost as good of a read as Mr. Herbert’s first book...Dune

Better the second time around!. Read this once right off the heels of the original. I was into it but ultimately a little let down expecting “dune:2” this time I picked it up without any such preconceived ideas and can safely say this book is just as good as the first.

It's perfect.. Just... perfect.

Incredible World Building.. Awesome! I am so psyched for the new movie.

Different Book Same Dune. Dune: Messiah putting it simply is more of everything you loved about the first book, while some portions were a bit slower paced, building the narrative payed off with a fulfilling conclusion.

Decent follow-up. Pretty good follow-up to the original Dune. While not as good, or as long, as the original it still had its moments. The villains aren’t quite as intriguing as the Harkonnens. While it might sound like I down on this book, I did actually enjoy it, Still worth a read for Dune fans. You won’t be disappointed.

It was a hard act to follow…. Messiah wasn’t horrible, but just like many second acts, Messiah faced the impossible task of following a generational tale. Skippable.

Worthwhile. A bit of a slog but worthwhile, nonetheless.

A Brilliant Sequel. In this book, the second of the original series, Paul begins to build his empire. A very satisfying follow up to the original masterpiece.

Wow!. I may have enjoyed that even more than the first boom.
