The Help Book Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling novel and basis for the Academy Award-winning film—a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don’t—nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who’s always taken orders quietly, but lately she’s unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She’s full of ambition, but without a husband, she’s considered a failure.

Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town...

The Help - Kathryn Stockett Book Reviews

  • WOW (nesamarieee)

I LOVE this book. It is amazing! Great story line and it all plays out just like a movie. Very easy to picture. All in all a great funny, heart-touching, and sad book.
  • One of the most unforgettable books ever written<333 (msm62814)

The Help is completely different from any other book I have ever read. Taking us back to the 1960s, Kathryn Stockett's masterpiece addresses some of the darkest sides of the Civil Rights Movement and the mistreatment of African Americans, boldly painting the picture of reality, instead of trying to cover up the awful sins committed back then as some people have. Unique, hilarious, and extremely touching. I usually do not get emotional over books or movies, but even I teared up a bit at the end. This is a legitimate, must-read, can't-put-down, if-you-interrupt-my-reading-i-will-kill-you kind of book. You will wish it never had to end, and thoughts of the plot will leave you pensive and wishing for more. I can guarantee you, whether you're brave enough to like it or not, you will certainly never forget it. ~m
  • The Help (Mariposa Images)

Wow what a perspective to write from I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It really had me wondering what my ancestors and those before them had to go through. I enjoyed the book but was disappointed by the movie.
  • The Help (cbh1996)

Best book I've read in a long time. I hope this book gives some comfort to those who have gone through such traumatic ordeals. I wish for all to be more compassionate, kind and caring to others no matter what race, religion or otherwise. This book has given me the insight to be more God-like in my thoughts, words and actions. It was an extreme pleasure to read this book. Thank you for this opportunity. I am forever grateful. To Hilly, she didn't get the least of what she "done" deserve and believe me, there are still godless people out there just like her. That won't change but this book may make them think a bit more. Actions are a whole different story.
  • Great read (Lou Loon)

This book makes you feel like your there and seeing it happen... 100% must read
  • Fantastic! (CJ2009B)

This book was great!!! I haven't seen the movie ... So I'm still picturing the characters in my head. It's funny how I see people at the mall or where ever and say ... She could be Hilly or Stuart etc. This book definitely captured my attention. With all the drama, I didn't want to put it down!! In addition, there was a true sadness that I felt throughout the book. I seriously cannot imagine living in those times with all those restrictions. The inability to love and demonstrate their love to people for who they are and not have an extreme focus on the color of their skin. Wonderful book!!!!!!!
  • Thank you Katherine! (nkreader)

What a page-turner, all the way to the end.. And I was sad when it was over. Very well done. I can see Aibileen is your Demetrie. And you are her Baby girl as well as Ms. Skeeter. I am just impressed by how much your memory of old Mississippi is still fresh in your mind. I felt it, down to my core. Thank you for writing this book.
  • Better than the movie (VeraRex)

    It was a great read
