Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who’s always taken orders quietly, but lately she’s unable to hold her bitterness back. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town...

- Wish I Had Read Before The Movie5 star

This was so amazing. Unfortunately I saw the movie before I even knew it was a book and I wish I hadn’t. I think the book was much better than the movie and would’ve been more enjoyable for me if I hadn’t seen it first. Still, I loved it.

- The Help5 star

Loved it! So good!

I’ve watched the movie, but I love how the book goes into so much more detail! Have a great day stranger who is scrolling through

BEST BOOK EVER. It’s a book you can read again and again and never get bored.

- Very good book5 star

Really enjoyed this book. So inspiring and a real page turner. Anyone trying to get their nose in a excellent read. This is the book.

- Eh3 star

I think it has a problem with it going from 0 to 100 too quick without any real buildup, the beginning is slow, and there’s a lot of boring parts, but the good parts are extremely good

- Best Book Ever5 star

This book has brought a bright spotlight on to the Civil Rights Movement as its amazing storytelling by Kathryn Stockett is shown. I recommend this book to everyone over the age of 12

- The Best Novel Ever Written5 star

I read The Help when I was 17, after having watched it quite a few times. Unfortunately, because I had watched the motion picture first, I envisioned the characters wrongly as I read the book. Since reading it the first time in 2017, I have read it again and again a total of eight times. Every time I re-read it, I get a different perspective than the last. I become more attached to Skeeter, Aibileen, and Minny. To Celia, and Lou Anne. To Louvenia, Winnie, and all of the other maids. It makes me cry every time I read it. When I watch the movie, I cry even harder knowing the background. This novel speaks wonders and volumes about how much love there was, how much hate there was, and how much power one book can cause. Kathryn Stockett has blessed us all with this magnificent, incredible and detailed tome that paints the most beautiful, and in some ways damning, images. I will always love this book, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone and everyone. Thank you Mrs. Stockett. Your book has touched my life, and will forever remain in my life.

- Loved it5 star

Loved the story and loved the characters. They were all unique and had their own voice, which made for an engaging read. I looked forward to hearing each character’s perspective, and I liked seeing how they were all connected throughout the story.

- AMAZING!!!5 star

Been reading it in my supervised study class which is about 100 min. And I'm almost done and it's so good!! One thing that amazes me is I NEVER get emotional about a book, or a movie, and cry -no- not me. But there were countless times where my face was tearing up or flat out bailing!! The book is wonderful, keeps you hooked, but some kids won't understand, there are some words thown out there that kids won't understand, but still great book!!Whoever gives 1-3 stars, you live under a rock or you just are missing out on this!!! 😁😁😁😁😁💗💗💗 📚

- Great book!5 star

This book can really pull at your heartstrings and make you really feel for the characters! I would recommend this book to anyone!

- Heart wrenching5 star

Just finished this amazing book! I read a lot and enjoy many genres, but very rarely does a book grab me and not let go! I was mesmerized by the stories in this book. I laughed, I cried, I became angry, I felt pity...many emotions were stirred up! I was truly sad when it ended, although not disappointed. I will miss these new friends of the heart! Bar none, one of the best books I've ever read!

- Yaaassss 😁5 star

This book is amazing! I don't even really read much except for text messages but after reading this book, I want to read even more. The characters have such different personalities that, eventually, falls through perfectly with each other. After reading this, I don't know what to do now. I don't know ANY book that can top this!

- The help is the best5 star

Omg I just started this book today for school and I already love it. I have been holding off reading it because my teacher said it was a literature circle book and I had to wait to read it. I am so glad I waited because this is seriously a great book 5 stars definitely.

- Help5 star

This is one of the best books I have ever read about the South and the lives of people in the 60's. I could not put it down.

- The Help5 star

This book is a great read! It is better than the movie, for of course it has more details. The movie does follow the book pretty well though. It is amazing what the black people had to live thru and how some of the white people actually thought back then. Of course sadly some still think the same way today. I truly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to everyone!

- A thoughtful,carefully crafted read5 star

I had already seen the movie. I usually like to read the book before seeing the movie. But I loved reading the book. It not only showed what was going on between whites and blacks, but portrayed what goes on between people in general. Why we do the things we do and act the way we do. Why we get comfortable with uncomfortable situations and how to change that behavior. I enjoyed reading this.

- Writing my first ever book review through my tears @ 2am5 star

I'm propped up on pillows in my bed, it's just after 2am, and my husband has given up turning over to ask me why I'm still awake reading. In fact, the last time he rolled over, he just stared long enough at me to focus on my face in the light of my tablet and register the tears rolling down my face. He sighed, laid his head back down and closed his eyes. The tears started welling somewhere around midnight and managed to hold onto my eyeballs until I read the last page. When I finally looked up, I realized the main reason I was crying, sobbing, was because the book had ended and I would never know what happened to the dear characters I had so deeply fallen in love with. I truly don't remember another book in my life that I struggled to put down as I did this one. I'm sure these reviews are too insignificant to ever get to the author... but I sure wish I could thank her. My bed, the pillows I'm propped on, my little white children sleeping in their beds... we're all living and growing here in Johannesburg, S.Africa. My husband and I moved here from Canada nearly five years ago... and while many readers may feel they are reading a piece of history... I feel truly moved and connected to real and true people I see and come into contact with every day. We have a maid, I was told that employing someone was 'expected of me' although it made me uncomfortable... and I am frowned upon when I mention that she was my first 'friend' in his country. It was a surprise to me that I had to tell her not to use the toilet out behind the house, not to bring her own cup, plate and cutlery to stash in my pantry and to please join me at the table when I was home and made us both lunch. We live in an expensive, up-market, high-security estate and I've been told many times that we shouldn't mix with our domestics because they will come to 'expect too much'. I hope that I am successful in teaching my children not to judge anyone by the colour of their skin, amongst other things, and I also hope that when they get old enough they'll read this book. Thank you for introducing me to these amazing people. I do think I'll wonder about them (like they were people i once knew), for a long time to come... Sincerely, S.Willock

- Awsome5 star

Im only half way through the book and its the best book I've ever read

- The Help4 star

Compelling! Truly a classic novel. Wonderful story about human compassion, resilience and incredible bravery. Always amazes me that this existed only 50 years ago and unfortunately our species still cannot seem to eradicate racism. We have to just keep trying and practice more compassion toward our fellow humans.

- Wow5 star

The book is better than the movie

- Great!5 star

After constantly hearing about this book and now of course about the major motion picture it has become, I decided to buy it. And after the first chapter there was no way in hell that I was putting it down. I read it on the bus, at work (even making customers wait until I've finished my page or my chapter). This book plays with your emotions, your curiosity and your own views of History. It is clever and beautifully written. It is one that will make the top of your recommendation list.

- Great book!5 star

Read it all on my iPhone so I guess it was good!!! :)

- The Help5 star

Awesome book! I couldn't put it down!!

- Amazing5 star

This book is fabulous!! I loved reading it on my iPad! It was even better then the movie!

- The help5 star

This book is softly written. It brings us to an era where terrible things were starting to happen and the U.S. had a shift in thinking and attitudes. The help seems to be an idealistic story of unfortunate times. I enjoyed the book but can't help but feel that one must educate the young people reading this who have no memories of those times that this is just a fictional story. Do our future generations a favour and teach them accurate history.

- Amazing5 star

Best book ever!!

- The Help4 star

Great book - particularly enjoyed how these woman's bravery contributed to the change in history. My husband and I stayed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island in Michigan a few years ago and all the waiters were black And wearing the morning suits - it was very disturbing in this day and age.

- The Help4 star

It's an engrossing read. Poignant and well written. You believe you're in the South in the 1960s. It leaves you with an educated understanding of how life was back then. The good and the bad. I highly recommend this book!

- The Help5 star

Even though I watched the movie...the book was begging me to read it! I'm so glad I picked it up and did just that. Although the movie was perfectly cast, the book puts us in the characters heads. It makes me appreciate the authors attention to the detail of how far we have come since the 1960's, but you also realize how far we still have to go. Fantastic read!

- Absolutely wonderful!5 star

What can I say about a book like this? Entertaining? Very. Enlightening? Without a doubt. A real page-turner, the kind of book that you hate to see end. But it triggered much more - emotion, curiosity, empathy for both black and white. I am a white woman from California. I couldn't be further from the characters in The Help - geographically or socially, and yet I saw a part of myself in each of those women: Aibileen's loyalty to her friends and her love for the children she cared for, Elizabeth's fear of losing her place in her world, and occasionally even Hilly, with her need to control everything and everyone around her (albeit, and thankfully, never to the degree of Hilly's viciousness). I even related to the author, as I am certain many readers did, as she found herself caught in the middle of the social order that was ingrained in her by generations of her privileged white ancestors and her own sense of justice and the need to tell the story in a way that would make people listen. It makes you wonder - did any real change come about by the writing of this book? Maybe not in the overall sense, but individually I think that (hopefully) the characters learned something about themselves, as (also hopefully) did the readers. I know I did. And in the end, isn't this what makes a book great?

- Words Do Not Describe How Good!👍5 star

This book is AMAZING! It is written so well! You can picture everything that is happening! 100% MUST READ! I love books that give off a lot of emotion and you get sad and happy moments and definitely some laughs (thanks to the character Minny) The movie is also A MUST! Love them both 💜👍

- The Help5 star

I absolutely loved this book. I read it every second I could.

- The Help5 star

This is an outstanding book! You cannot put it down once you start. Miss Kathryn, don't ever doubt that Demetrie didn't know how you felt. No words could ever describe your relationship. Your book is a tribute to all controversial and loving relationships. Thank you for having the courage to write it.

- WOW5 star

I LOVE this book. It is amazing! Great story line and it all plays out just like a movie. Very easy to picture. All in all a great funny, heart-touching, and sad book.

- One of the most unforgettable books ever written<3335 star

The Help is completely different from any other book I have ever read. Taking us back to the 1960s, Kathryn Stockett's masterpiece addresses some of the darkest sides of the Civil Rights Movement and the mistreatment of African Americans, boldly painting the picture of reality, instead of trying to cover up the awful sins committed back then as some people have. Unique, hilarious, and extremely touching. I usually do not get emotional over books or movies, but even I teared up a bit at the end. This is a legitimate, must-read, can't-put-down, if-you-interrupt-my-reading-i-will-kill-you kind of book. You will wish it never had to end, and thoughts of the plot will leave you pensive and wishing for more. I can guarantee you, whether you're brave enough to like it or not, you will certainly never forget it. ~m

- The Help5 star

Wow what a perspective to write from I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It really had me wondering what my ancestors and those before them had to go through. I enjoyed the book but was disappointed by the movie.

- The Help5 star

Best book I've read in a long time. I hope this book gives some comfort to those who have gone through such traumatic ordeals. I wish for all to be more compassionate, kind and caring to others no matter what race, religion or otherwise. This book has given me the insight to be more God-like in my thoughts, words and actions. It was an extreme pleasure to read this book. Thank you for this opportunity. I am forever grateful. To Hilly, she didn't get the least of what she "done" deserve and believe me, there are still godless people out there just like her. That won't change but this book may make them think a bit more. Actions are a whole different story.

- Great read4 star

This book makes you feel like your there and seeing it happen... 100% must read

- Fantastic!5 star

This book was great!!! I haven't seen the movie ... So I'm still picturing the characters in my head. It's funny how I see people at the mall or where ever and say ... She could be Hilly or Stuart etc. This book definitely captured my attention. With all the drama, I didn't want to put it down!! In addition, there was a true sadness that I felt throughout the book. I seriously cannot imagine living in those times with all those restrictions. The inability to love and demonstrate their love to people for who they are and not have an extreme focus on the color of their skin. Wonderful book!!!!!!!

- Thank you Katherine!5 star

What a page-turner, all the way to the end.. And I was sad when it was over. Very well done. I can see Aibileen is your Demetrie. And you are her Baby girl as well as Ms. Skeeter. I am just impressed by how much your memory of old Mississippi is still fresh in your mind. I felt it, down to my core. Thank you for writing this book.

- So amazing!!!!5 star

I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. I was so sad when it ended, and so happy when I realized there was an epilogue. Best book I've read in a while-- the characters were lovable, realistic and full of personality, the book was written honestly and wonderfully and the plot was captivating. I wish there was more to read!!!!

- Great read, captivating5 star

Loved this book. Made sure to read it before the movie. Truly had me laughing out loud at times and feeling sad and emotional for characters at other times. It's a must read!

- The Help is Great5 star

The book was, in my opinion, outstanding. I shed a few tears and showed a few smiles. The description is vivid and as you read you can see everything unfolding. Everything is clear and understandable also relatable.

- The Help5 star

Simply amazing.

- Amazing Read!5 star

This is a heartfelt, honest book about the relationship between African American women and the families they worked for. It shows how discrimination comes in many different forms, with people thinking they're not the prejudice ones, when they as the most dangerous version of all. It teaches us to love one another no matter the color of our skin.

- !!!!!5 star

Couldn't put it down!

Fantastic. Couldn't stop reading it. And re-reading it.

- Better than the movie5 star

My wife and I watched the movie, then decided to read the book. So glad we read the book. The movie was pretty good but the book was great.

- 5 stars5 star

I absolutely adored this book and each character in it. It's incredibly brave and so important even now in 2012. We have a long way to go for equality, but hearing stories like this gives me hope.

- Loved it5 star

Read the whole book in 3 days!! Now I can watch the movie!!

- Most amazing book ever!!!5 star

Such an amazing book!!! Some of the best money spent. After reading this book, I looked up my moms maid as a child just to thank her and apologize for what she had to endure. Luckily my grandparents are the same sort of people as skeeter and Celia, they GAVE her the money for her to purchase her first home. Makes any individual appreciate the small things more and pray harder for positive change.

- Wow.5 star

Wow. This book was truly amazing. Great literature. It had me laughing and crying. Can't wait to see the movie now.
