Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert Book Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling follow-up to Eat Pray Love—an intimate and erudite celebration of love from the author of Big Magic and City of Girls.

At the end of her bestselling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous bad divorces. Enough said.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government, which-after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing-gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again. Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Gilbert tackled her fears of marriage by delving into this topic completely, trying with all her might to discover through historical research, interviews, and much personal reflection what this stubbornly enduring old institution actually is. Told with Gilbert's trademark wit, intelligence and compassion, Committed attempts to "turn on all the lights" when it comes to matrimony, frankly examining questions of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, family tradition, social expectations, divorce risks and humbling responsibilities. Gilbert's memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails.

Great!. Excellent book!, very inspiring!

Helped me process divorce. A great book to read for divorced woman who are thinking about a new love.

From one marriage skeptic to another, an amazing read. This is not Eat, Pray, Love. It's not comprised of hundreds of small stories woven into one coherent tale (although there are some great one thrown in). Just like the title says, it's the author's attempt to reconcile with the idea of marriage. If you, too, are in that boat you will find this to be an immensely rewarding read. Some reviewers didn't like all of the "history" the author included in the book...but in my opinion the history was the best part. For someone like me trying to sort out my feelings about marriage, I wanted more than Elizabeth Gilbert's musings on the subject. I appreciated getting perspectives from different cultures and time periods. Overall, a wonderful read that has motivated me (as a young person in a committed relationship moving towards marriage) to stop and truly think about what that next step means.

okay but.... This book started off amazing, on par with Eat, Pray, Love. However, it unfortunately did not continue that way. The anecdotes from her life are still amusing, but unfortunately the author feels the need to also include about 20-30 pages of 'the history of marriage," all the way from ancient times to the present. Sorry, but this was really not interesting. Eat, Pray, Love succeeded because of the truth and feelings present in all of her stories...not the history lessons. Get this one from the library.

Passion on steroids. Some people are so smitten they'll endure just about anything and everything for love. Gilbert shares her true romantic story- one that seems both fantastical and totally unbelievable. Impressive woman; lucky husband. Solid author.

Know what you're buying.... I really enjoyed this book, although I happened to stumble upon it just a month after getting married myself. I found both the author's and historical perspective really helpful on my own journey to reconcile what I was losing with what I was gaining. This is not a love story. This is a non-fiction book about the author's journey from marriage-phobia to acceptance and understanding. To achieve this end, she does a lot of historical research which I felt was presented in a very interesting way, but seemed to bore some other reviewers. She also uses personal stories and stories from women in other cultures she meets during her travels. One thing that annoyed me was her occasional insertion of political leanings because they weren't really relevant to the rest if the content. I also got a bit bored and disappointed at the end, as she seems to over-justify her reason for concluding marriage was ok after all. Overall, though, I was happy to have read this and would highly recommend to the thinking woman who wants to explore the concept of marriage.

Interesting history of marriage. The cultural and historic perspectives on marriage presented in this book are interesting and thought provoking. I wouldn't call it a must-read book, but if you enjoyed Eat, Pray, Love, you will probably enjoy reading this as well.

Eat Pray Love and Committed. I just read Eat Pray Love. The day I finished I went to the movie. They were both very inspiring. The book had more detail which is understandable. Then, the next day I read Commited. I just finished it now. I loved it! I really liked the fact there was so many wonderful and interesting stories from different places in the world. I admire and respect you, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'm happy that you found such a wonderful man in Felipe! Your life is a miracle. You were able to be in tune with who you are and get your needs fulfilled. Congratulations. I rate them all as 5 stars.

Loved it!. I found the history and various perspectives of marriage to be fascinating. The author provided very insightful interpretations of the evolution of marriage while telling her personal story. If you are looking for a romance novel, this may not necessarily be for you... but the beauty of Elizabeth Gilbert's writing is that it is history, education, theology and reality all in one.

Kudos for Elizabeth Gilbert!. I am a little disappointed in iBooks lack of description of this charming memoir about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness no matter what unexpected form it takes. Gilbert is honest and raw in her candid descriptions of her feelings upon entering the world of marriage the second time around. A must read.

An excellent read, whether inclined to marriage or not.. Funny, poignant... Gilbert has such a likable writing style! Besides her personal stories and testaments, much can be learned from her well researched examples and histories on marriage historically and cross culturally. I'd recommend this read to anyone.

A must.. I have read this book three times now. It is a must read for anyone considering marriage, full of thought and honesty.

I Should Be Committed For Buying This Book. I loved Eat Pray Love so I thought this would be equally as moving, enjoying, and entertaining. Nothing could be further from the truth. She went on and on, ad nauseam, and took FOREVER to get to her point. Plus she introduced her brand of politics, which I found unecessary and offensive, despite whether or not I agree with her. Eat Pray Love was a masterpiece and she deserved all the accolades. This book wasn’t worth my time or money. I’ll be deleting it from my iTunes library and read the aforementioned book again.

A bit of a yawn. For me, reading this book was a lot like watching the movie version of "Eat, Pray, Love". I could get up, leave the room and come back ten minutes later without missing much of the plot....

Read The Signature of All Things instead. I loved her other books but this one was too wordy. Too long winded.

Thought provoking and heartwarming. So many parts of this book helped explain for me the dichotomy of married life for women. On one hand all I wanted to be was a mother but at the same time I had career aspirations that motherhood couldn’t squelch. The torture of balancing this day to day played out via divorce and then I was “free” 50% of the time while my kids were with their dad. I love the way the author analyzes and explains the struggles of career moms and giving up of ones self in the name of motherhood and wifedom. Most of all I just loved the love between Liz and Felipe and the rock solid commitment to each other! On my “this time” marriage striving to maintain my identity which I swore would not be deprived again in the name of love. Wish me luck.

Excellent!. Must Read, realistic, informative, fun

Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert. The book was like reading someone's neurosis on "The fear of marriage." There are examinations of different cultural views and background research but was it enough for the author to convince herself on the idea of marriage? She kicked and screamed through the process like pulling teeth.

Perhaps more enjoyable than the predecessor!. I didn't know what to expect after reading reviews of people annoyed by e marriage history in the book......I LOVED IT. I loved the way she weaved her research into her recollections. I think it is a book for everyone to read....single, married, engaged, divorced, those hoping to someday marry, those totally disinterested in marriage, men, women, straight, gay. Thank you Liz, for a thoughtful and by humorous book.

What is this marriage stuff all about anyway?. This book might not have been quite as much fun to read as "Eat, Pray, Love," but it was well worth the read. Ms. Gilbert does an excellent job of discussing what marriage has been and is. After reading this book I am amazed that the topic of marriage (arguably one of our most cherished institutions) has not been examined in mainstream literature this way before. This book examines the fascinating history of marriage in a way that helps to separate the legal, religious, and private aspects of what marriage is and can be. The result of this particular examination is that Ms. Gilbert creates a rich but unfinished tapestry in which our own and others' ideas of marriage can be harmoniously interwoven and made part of the marriages in our lives.

Committed. Book is ok. I was hoping to read more about their love story and how it continued after Eat Pray Love. Only 25% of it talked about it and the rest is about history of marriage from different perspective of cultured. I was in chapter 3 when I decided I can't take any more of marriage history lessons and skipped to the last chapter to find the story I've been looking for.

Really enjoyed. Didn't think I would like this, but really did.

Think textbook, not novel.... I wouldn't describe this book as a novel, more of an anthropological look at marriage. If you're interested in learning about religion and marriage in different cultures, this might be the book for you, but I wanted more of a personal story.

Committed. So dearly needed this book, right now. Marriage is one of the most confusing arrangements in life. I am comforted by the fact that I am not the only one who has struggled with its ups and downs. So truthful and heart wrenching.

Commitment. Not a page turner, but lots to consider.
