The Outlander by Gil Adamson Book Summary

“A remarkable first novel, full of verve, beautifully written, and with all the panache of a great adventure.”
—Michael Ondaatje

In 1903 a mysterious young woman flees alone across the West, one heart-pounding step ahead of the law. At 19, Mary Boulton has just become a widow—and her husband’s killer. As bloodhounds track her frantic race toward the mountains, she is tormented by the knowledge that her two ruthless brothers-in-law are in pursuit, determined to avenge their younger brother’s death. Responding to little more than the primitive fight for life, the widow retreats ever deeper into the wilderness—and into the wilds of her own mind—encountering an unforgettable cast of eccentrics along the way.

With the stunning prose and captivating mood of great works like Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain or early Cormac McCarthy, Gil Adamson’s intoxicating debut novel is the brilliant and gripping tale of one woman’s desperate escape.

Terrific story. Captivating, difficult to put down and I couldn't wait to get back to it. Loved it can't wait to read more by this author.

The Outlander. I loved this book. Couldn't put it down. I could actually put myself in Mary's place as she struggled to survive & escape. What a time to be a woman! Life was so much harder... I will look forward to more wonderful storytelling from this wonderful author.

Not bad but. I absolutely love the way this guy writes, and I loved the story. But I am such that I feel that sexual scenes in a story do more damage to the plot than good. They just take a chunk out of a good story, bringing it to a stand still while you try to muddle through the exploit. I usually pass them up so I can get back to what really matters. The ending was a bit disappointing. Too much game playing.

The Outlander. I couldn't finish the book, I read for entertainment not lessons in Freudian Phycology.

The Out lander. This is a sneaky book. I kept waiting for morality or real catastrophe. Never did deliver. All through the story there is total cruelty, the old woman's senior maid wanted to take a heavy strap to the naked body in the bath tub. Ms Adamson was too kind. All the way through, except for the arrow in the leg, she escapes punishment. It ended too squishy....Julian would have found her before she got back to Frank, captured her and dragged her at the end of rope back to his form of justice.
