The Pact by Jodi Picoult Book Summary

“Engrossing...The Pact is compelling reading.”—People

In this heart-rending tale of love and friendship, Jodi Picoult brings to life a familiar world, and in a single terrifying moment awakens every parent’s worst fear: We think we know our children . . . but do we ever really know them at all?

The Golds and the Hartes, neighbors for eighteen years, have always been inseparable. So have their children—and it’s no surprise that in high school Chris and Emily’s friendship blossoms into something more. But the bonds of family, friendship, and passion—which had seemed so indestructible—suddenly threaten to unravel in the wake of unimaginable tragedy.

When midnight calls from the hospital come in, no one is ready for the truth. Emily is dead at seventeen from a gunshot wound to the head. There’s a single unspent bullet in the gun that Chris pilfered from his father’s cabinet—a bullet that Chris tells police he intended for himself. But a local detective has doubts about the suicide pact that Chris describes.

This extraordinary, poignant novel paints an indelible portrait of two families in anguish . . . and creates an astonishingly suspenseful courtroom drama as Chris is put on trial for murder.

KayMF-C. Great book as usual by Jodi Picoult

LOVE LOVE LOVE. Loved the book from beginning to end. The relationship between the characters was so romantic and heart warming. I myself was overcome by many emotions while reading this book. Definitely a favorite.

MUST READ. My favorite book ever, I don't like rereading books since I know how it ends, but I have read this book three times so far. It is truly inspiring. All of Picoult's books are amazing but this is by far my favorite.

Great Book!. I read a couple other titles by Jodi Picoult and was so engrossed in each one, this book not being an exception. I love the way the story was unraveling both in the past and present. It was wonderfully written. Jodi P. is an amazing writer! Her books never disappoint.

Magnificent. Single handedly just changed my entire view of life. This book is so emotionally destabilizing to anybody reading it. One if the greatest reads I've ever had the pleasure of finding!

Wow!. I was absolutely amazed at the beauty of this story. To be able to combine love, tragedy, teen angst, depression, and a murder trial in one book takes a very talented author. Jodi did a great job portraying all of those things while keeping the story very interesting. Great job!

The Pact. AWESOME BOOK!!!

One of her best !. This has been one of her best books yet. Loved it !

A must read. You will have a tough time putting this book down and after you're down you'll want to read it again.

So sad. Such a sad story. Love so long and true.

Another Great Picoult Book. I am a biased fan of the author- but this was good, classic Jodi Picoult.

Great book to read. Definitely a page turner!. I only just started reading J. Picoult's novels and before reading The Pact I decided to pick up one of her most recent works: House Rules. I enjoyed reading the latter but it was not a life changing read nor did it incline me to pick up another novel of hers. I gave The Pact a chance due to the positive reviews it received and I have to admit that this was a great, well written book. The writing just flows and leads the reader from one page to the next with ease. I highly recommend this book!

The Pact. This book drew me in. I thought about it during my day until I could return to a and enter the story. Picoult portrayed the characters so that I sympathized and understood each one. Every setting was believable. I guess the only character I didn't like was Emily, the victim. I kept asking "why?"

Amazing!. Absolutely loved this book. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommend this. A story of love and loss

The pact. This was an excellent book

Awesome!. Absolutely engrossing! Definitely worth reading!

Amazing!!. Jodi Picoult is one of the most amazing authors who knows how keep me wanting more with every book! The Pact is one of my favorites!! Must read!!

I loved every page. I couldn’t put this down and loved the mystery of what really happened. Great book

Masterpiece. This astonishing must-read captured me. I've been a fan of this author for sometime. It's amazing how realistic her fiction can be. You could easily replace the character with someone you know.

Very well written. Don't know how I missed this book - thought I'd read mostly all of them. What a treat to find this one. I enjoyed it very much.

Good book, but not great. The book frustrated me. I felt a lot of questions unanswered.

Great read. I couldn't put it down!

Good Read!. I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't wait to get to the end to see what would happen. The characters may not have been built up as well as they could have been (I couldn't easily put faces with characters) but I was drawn in regardless.

Awesome book. This book is amazing. Don't think twice about the $2.99 it more than pays for itself! This is by far my favorite Jodi P. book.

Fabulous!. I have not read a single book by Jodi Picoult that was not well written, full of suspense, well researched and just great! I will always buy her books! She is one of my favorite authors.

The pact. Great book couldn't put down until the end! The only thing that was disappointing was that Emily's character was not dissected more closely, in specific to what happened to her when she was 9 yrs old.

Awesome. I loved this book. I couldn't put it down.

heartbreaking. I've read this so many times, and every single time I find myself crying. It's such a beautiful and tragic love story. I 100% recommend.

The book that started my obsession.. This is the book I read that was recommended to me by my senior English teacher. 11 years later, Picoult is still my favorite author.

For Hearts and Brains. The Pact is phenomenally written. Imagining and remembering what it was like being a teenager in love with it's joys and heartbreaks. Also remembering the power of the truth, and how it seems that no one wants to hear it, see it or feel it. Gives one great pause for conversation.

Wonderful author. Love all her books.

Worth it. Loved the read but I felt like I didn't get the full story in reference to her reason for suicide. The author touched on depression and possible sexual abuse.

Tragedy. I am a fan of Jody Picoult! She writes with knowledge and sensitivity of her subject. Unputdownable! Highly recommend!

Excellent Read. Very good book. Couldn't put it down. My first book by this author.

The Pact. Riveting, I could not put this book down. Brings back all the intense emotions felt as a teenager, and the pain and love of being a parent

Loved it!. This was my first book of hers. I only bought it because it was super cheap and I just wanted to read something. Couldn't put it down, read the whole book in 24 hours!

CAC reviews PACT. Probably my favorite romance novel of all time 🌻 And I despise romance novels

The one that started it all. This was my first book by JP and after reading it I quickly read everyone she has put out minus 2 (so far).

The Pact. Usually like this author, but this one is a bit boring an drags out too long

Page turning.. Page turning and great plot. Tragic

This book. Was twist and turns the entire time. I found myself reading this book nonstop. It was great.

Great find. This was a page turner. Loved the style of each chapter being now or then and then coming together in the end.

Phenomenal. Captivating story, just great!

Favorite. Read this a couple years ago still my favorite of hers

Inspiring Work. As an avid reader I was aware that Jodi Picoult was a popular author, but I had never read any of her books. After reading The Pact it was obvious that I had been missing out. I’ve already grabbed several of her other books, and intend to start one of them after finishing The Pact about 10 minutes ago. She’s a talented writer, and I love that she takes on tough topics which so urgently need to see the light of day. I’m not only a new fan, but really wish I could be a “morning walk buddy”.

Amazing story.... A beautiful work of contemporary literature; Jodi Piccoult is one of my all-time favorites; the first book I ever read that was hers was Nineteen Minutes, and I simply fell in love with her writing style, her genre of choice, and, overall, the entirety of her story lines.

Good book. I thought this was a well written book and keeps you interested however I have never been more annoyed by a main character (Emily) in my life!!

Love it. So phenomenal

Whew. I've been reading books since 14 years old and don't think I've met something this captivating. Many people have said to me how they can read a book in 3/4 days and I know can say I am one of them. I didn't read it in a short period of time but it was definitely hard to put down. I wanted to know the end but didn't want it to end. This book definitely holds your attention to the end. It brings up many topics in daily life that some people never experience or understand. This is a MUST read by far!

Amazing!!!. Loved it! Kept me wanting to read more and more each day! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

A totally gripping read, couldn’t put it down.. It was every emotion known to a human. I prayed the jury would understand and each of them would experience those same emotions as me.

Must read!. I find it hard to get into a book. There are many ive started with the intention of finishing but never do. The thing i love about Jodi's books are that they keep you coming back for more! This was the first one of hers that i read and i would recommend it to anyone! I loved it that much im going to download it to read it over and over again!

Amazing!. Amazingly written and very captivating. The entire story has you on edge and wanting to read the next chapter, amazing writer

Loved it. Really good

Great read. Enjoyed this book, could not put it down, would recommend this book for a great read with a few twists & turns

Good Read. I was a bit disappointed with this after reading 'The Storyteller'. Not one of her best books but still a good read.

Tear jerker. Absolutely brilliant book, I couldn't put it down. There are a couple of twists which make it even more exciting.... Definitely recommend it to anyone!!!

The Pact. very compelling read. You really get into the characters and feel so involved with them.

Disappointed. Really disappointed with this one, no where near the quality if her other books

The pact. First of her books i read and i couldn't put it down! If u like this one get hold of her other books you won't regret it.

Amazing. The first Jodi Picoult book I ever read and hooked on her books ever since. Kept me guessing until the final page.

The pact. Quite dark, but a good read

Incredible... No words to describe Jodi Picoult. Her style is captivating and forces readers to truly recognise their moral convictions. Another page turner!

Captivating. This book had me entranced from the first chapter. The lives and stories of the characters intertwined beautifully and tugged on the heart strings. Brilliant!!

Fantastic. Great book, tugged at heart strings an wonderfully written, couldn't put it down.

Great story. Jodie’s books are always inspiring. Perception Is everything and nothing and her books always portray that.

Great read. This is my first Jodi Picoult book and I couldn't fault it. My friend had this book and I read the blurb and I HAD to buy this a book ASAP! I love the way it goes from now - then. Such an amazing book. Definitely recommended...

Pact. Well worth reading a page turner. Great read.

<3. The most twisted and emotional love story I've ever read, I love this book

Amazing. Wow what an amazing story I loved it :)

*****. This booked opened my eyes to things I struggle with myself. It was so well written. Thank you for making unspoken topics spoken about.

The Pact. Jodi Picoult you have done it again....sensational reading, thank you.

The Pact. BORING with a capitol B! Simple plot, very slow development of the characters and no twists. The court case part was tedious and repetitive and quite unrealistic. Prefer to watch a csi show, at least that would only have been one hour of my life wasted. Not recommended unless you are desperate or paid for the thing. Disappointing.

The Pact. A.very complex, but riveting book about love and death. Elaine Forrestal

The Pact. Couldn't put it down. Great book!

Unputdownable. Story slowly unfolds as you get to know the characters, looking forward to getting to the end to put it all together. Great read

The Pact. This will go on my list of best reads my heart is still pounding I know it is Fiction but so much of this book rings true for so many this should be talked about not kept quiet

The Pact. Disappointed. Long, drawn out and boring. I kept reading thinking there must be a great twist at the end - not to be. The twist I would have written. Emily was in fact sexually molested by Chris's father or they were in fact brother and sister! A time waster!

Amazing!. I love her stories. She doesn't shy away from deeply troubling yet morally twisting plot lines and this one doesn't disappoint. She really lets the reader empathise with her character. I felt so much for poor Emily and I thought it was going to end differently maybe 5 times! I highly recommend.

Loved!. My most favorite book I've read, read it more than once. Love love love. Made my hurt, such a sad story but great read couldn't put it down.

Loved it!. What a great read, I couldn't put it down!

Need more books from Jodi Picoult!. Fabulous author!! Amazing book!! A must read!!! :)

Brilliant!!!. Sad and moving story, enjoyable read couldn't put it down! Very well written!

The Pact. Great story with some real "make you think" moments

Really Good!. I loved this book. A good read!

One of my all-time favorites. This book was lent to me a long time ago and it became one of my favorite books of all time. I still re-read it every now and then. Simply amazing. Heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.

Praise for "The Pact". This is one of those stories that will stay in your memory for years to come. The best I've read in a really long time.

The Pact. Loved The Pact! Very captivating story with real emotion & suspense!

Excellent. I couldn't put this book down, it has every emotion you could feel. Anger , fear, sadness, anticipation . Amazing read.

The Pact. A great read!! Keeps you guessing right until the end. Tragic ending to a love story.

The Pact. WOW! I couldn't put it down - I had to keep turning the pages to see how it ended.

Couldn't put it down. This book was definitely a page turner. So many twists through out the book you just can't wait to read what is next. Such a touching love story of real life teenage problems. Well done Jodi, once again.
