The Pact

The Pact by Jodi Picoult Book Summary

From Jodi Picoult, one of the most powerful writers in contemporary fiction, comes a riveting, timely, heartbreaking, and terrifying novel of families in anguish -- and friendships ripped apart by inconceivable violence. Until the phone calls came at 3:00 A.M. on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily has been shot to death by her beloved and devoted Chris as part of an apparent suicide pact -- leaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew.

- The book that started my obsession.5 star

This is the book I read that was recommended to me by my senior English teacher. 11 years later, Picoult is still my favorite author.

- CAC reviews PACT5 star

Probably my favorite romance novel of all time 🌻 And I despise romance novels

- I loved every page5 star

I couldn’t put this down and loved the mystery of what really happened. Great book

- Loved it4 star

I don’t know if any of her books that I don’t like or wouldn’t recommend.

- Magnificent5 star

Single handedly just changed my entire view of life. This book is so emotionally destabilizing to anybody reading it. One if the greatest reads I've ever had the pleasure of finding!

- MUST READ5 star

My favorite book ever, I don't like rereading books since I know how it ends, but I have read this book three times so far. It is truly inspiring. All of Picoult's books are amazing but this is by far my favorite.

- Page turning.5 star

Page turning and great plot. Tragic

- Very well written5 star

Don't know how I missed this book - thought I'd read mostly all of them. What a treat to find this one. I enjoyed it very much.

- Great book to read. Definitely a page turner!5 star

I only just started reading J. Picoult's novels and before reading The Pact I decided to pick up one of her most recent works: House Rules. I enjoyed reading the latter but it was not a life changing read nor did it incline me to pick up another novel of hers. I gave The Pact a chance due to the positive reviews it received and I have to admit that this was a great, well written book. The writing just flows and leads the reader from one page to the next with ease. I highly recommend this book!

- A must read5 star

You will have a tough time putting this book down and after you're down you'll want to read it again.

- The Pact3 star

Usually like this author, but this one is a bit boring an drags out too long

- Masterpiece5 star

This astonishing must-read captured me. I've been a fan of this author for sometime. It's amazing how realistic her fiction can be. You could easily replace the character with someone you know.

- Awesome!4 star

Absolutely engrossing! Definitely worth reading!

- heartbreaking5 star

I've read this so many times, and every single time I find myself crying. It's such a beautiful and tragic love story. I 100% recommend.

- Wow!5 star

I was absolutely amazed at the beauty of this story. To be able to combine love, tragedy, teen angst, depression, and a murder trial in one book takes a very talented author. Jodi did a great job portraying all of those things while keeping the story very interesting. Great job!

- Whew5 star

I've been reading books since 14 years old and don't think I've met something this captivating. Many people have said to me how they can read a book in 3/4 days and I know can say I am one of them. I didn't read it in a short period of time but it was definitely hard to put down. I wanted to know the end but didn't want it to end. This book definitely holds your attention to the end. It brings up many topics in daily life that some people never experience or understand. This is a MUST read by far!

- LOVE LOVE LOVE5 star

Loved the book from beginning to end. The relationship between the characters was so romantic and heart warming. I myself was overcome by many emotions while reading this book. Definitely a favorite.

- Phenomenal5 star

Captivating story, just great!

- Loved it!4 star

This was my first book of hers. I only bought it because it was super cheap and I just wanted to read something. Couldn't put it down, read the whole book in 24 hours!

- Amazing!!5 star

Jodi Picoult is one of the most amazing authors who knows how keep me wanting more with every book! The Pact is one of my favorites!! Must read!!

- Favorite4 star

Read this a couple years ago still my favorite of hers

- Amazing story...5 star

A beautiful work of contemporary literature; Jodi Piccoult is one of my all-time favorites; the first book I ever read that was hers was Nineteen Minutes, and I simply fell in love with her writing style, her genre of choice, and, overall, the entirety of her story lines.

- The Pact5 star

This book drew me in. I thought about it during my day until I could return to a and enter the story. Picoult portrayed the characters so that I sympathized and understood each one. Every setting was believable. I guess the only character I didn't like was Emily, the victim. I kept asking "why?"

- The pact5 star

This was an excellent book

- Love it5 star

So phenomenal

- For Hearts and Brains5 star

The Pact is phenomenally written. Imagining and remembering what it was like being a teenager in love with it's joys and heartbreaks. Also remembering the power of the truth, and how it seems that no one wants to hear it, see it or feel it. Gives one great pause for conversation.

- Great Book!5 star

I read a couple other titles by Jodi Picoult and was so engrossed in each one, this book not being an exception. I love the way the story was unraveling both in the past and present. It was wonderfully written. Jodi P. is an amazing writer! Her books never disappoint.

- Great read5 star

I couldn't put it down!

- The Pact5 star

AWESOME BOOK!!!

- Good book4 star

I thought this was a well written book and keeps you interested however I have never been more annoyed by a main character (Emily) in my life!!

- Good Read!4 star

I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't wait to get to the end to see what would happen. The characters may not have been built up as well as they could have been (I couldn't easily put faces with characters) but I was drawn in regardless.

- The pact4 star

Great book couldn't put down until the end! The only thing that was disappointing was that Emily's character was not dissected more closely, in specific to what happened to her when she was 9 yrs old.

- Good book, but not great3 star

The book frustrated me. I felt a lot of questions unanswered.

- Awesome5 star

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down.

- Excellent Read4 star

Very good book. Couldn't put it down. My first book by this author.

- Worth it4 star

Loved the read but I felt like I didn't get the full story in reference to her reason for suicide. The author touched on depression and possible sexual abuse.

- The Pact4 star

Riveting, I could not put this book down. Brings back all the intense emotions felt as a teenager, and the pain and love of being a parent

- Awesome book5 star

This book is amazing. Don't think twice about the $2.99 it more than pays for itself! This is by far my favorite Jodi P. book.

- One of her best !5 star

This has been one of her best books yet. Loved it !

- Kept me interested4 star

My first Jodie picoult book. I really did enjoy it. I couldn't put it down. I just wish the family had known why Emily was so depressed. It wouldn't have made it so sad.

- Simply awesome!2 star

One of my favorite Jodi Picoult novels. This, "My Sister's Keeper" and "19 minutes" are my top 3 faves. It's been about 5 or 6 years since I've read this and don't remember the details too too clearly, I remember how it ended, but I remember liking it so much, that I had planned on reading it again. It is definitely worth purchasing.

- Disappointing ending4 star

Loved the story, couldn't put it down waiting to find out what really happened, but the ending was a letdown, it seemed totally impossible. Would have like more development of Emily's character to understand her better. I also wanted to know how the Golds felt after the trial.

- The Pact4 star

A good read. The characters are very real and very human. The best part is it has a real ending! I love a book with an ending, even if I don't like the ending. I could not stop reading.

This book was definitely a page turner. So many twists through out the book you just can't wait to read what is next. Such a touching love story of real life teenage problems. Well done Jodi, once again.

- Excellent5 star

I couldn't put this book down, it has every emotion you could feel. Anger , fear, sadness, anticipation . Amazing read.

- One of my all-time favorites5 star

This book was lent to me a long time ago and it became one of my favorite books of all time. I still re-read it every now and then. Simply amazing. Heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.

- The Pact5 star

WOW! I couldn't put it down - I had to keep turning the pages to see how it ended.

I loved this book. A good read!

- The Pact5 star

Great story with some real "make you think" moments

- :)5 star

Amazing, highly recommended. Exciting and heart breaking

- Incredible..5 star

No words to describe Jodi Picoult. Her style is captivating and forces readers to truly recognise their moral convictions. Another page turner!

- Great read5 star

This is my first Jodi Picoult book and I couldn't fault it. My friend had this book and I read the blurb and I HAD to buy this a book ASAP! I love the way it goes from now - then. Such an amazing book. Definitely recommended...

- The Pact5 star

This will go on my list of best reads my heart is still pounding I know it is Fiction but so much of this book rings true for so many this should be talked about not kept quiet

- The Pact1 star

Disappointed. Long, drawn out and boring. I kept reading thinking there must be a great twist at the end - not to be. The twist I would have written. Emily was in fact sexually molested by Chris's father or they were in fact brother and sister! A time waster!

- The Pact1 star

BORING with a capitol B! Simple plot, very slow development of the characters and no twists. The court case part was tedious and repetitive and quite unrealistic. Prefer to watch a csi show, at least that would only have been one hour of my life wasted. Not recommended unless you are desperate or paid for the thing. Disappointing.

- Brilliant!!!5 star

Sad and moving story, enjoyable read couldn't put it down! Very well written!

- Fantastic5 star

Great book, tugged at heart strings an wonderfully written, couldn't put it down.

- Amazing!5 star

I love her stories. She doesn't shy away from deeply troubling yet morally twisting plot lines and this one doesn't disappoint. She really lets the reader empathise with her character. I felt so much for poor Emily and I thought it was going to end differently maybe 5 times! I highly recommend.

- Loved!5 star

My most favorite book I've read, read it more than once. Love love love. Made my hurt, such a sad story but great read couldn't put it down.

- The Pact3 star

A.very complex, but riveting book about love and death. Elaine Forrestal

- The pact3 star

Quite dark, but a good read

- Captivating5 star

This book had me entranced from the first chapter. The lives and stories of the characters intertwined beautifully and tugged on the heart strings. Brilliant!!

I have never read a book like this one before. Love stories are my thing, but this is a great story that has love in it but so so so much more! It was extremely well written and I would suggest it to everyone I know. It sticks with you long after you read it!

- Loved it!5 star

Being a fan of Jodi Picoult, I absolutely loved this book. She seems to never disappoint. I highly recommend her books to anyone who enjoys reading!

- Unbelievable!5 star

This book is fantastic! While the story and characters are appealing and written so well that the situations seem almost real, the book really makes you question how you would react if you were in any one of their shoes. This is a book that stays with you. While this certainly isn't a fairy tale, this is definitely a story about true love and what you are willing to do for someone you love. I highly recommend it!

- 740 pages, couldn't put it down5 star

Great book

- Good4 star

This book made me feel a lot of emotions. Angry at some parts, but I will say it brought me in until the end. Otherwise it was good

- Horrible1 star

this book is horrible. It might as well be free. I wasted 3 dollars. The beginning is so confusing and it takes forever to get in to. I didn't even make it past the first chapter. Save your money.

- The pact4 star

Couldn't put it down...but wasn't really pleased with the ending

- Love this book5 star

Awful!

- Nice5 star

It is a great story and wonderfully written. The way the Then and Now threads meet up is masterful really. I wish that the very end was more of what I had expected, but maybe I just don't get it yet.

- Absolutely a share and pass on book5 star

I read this book in a matter of three days, only breaking for the necessities of life. I hated setting it down and couldn't wait to curl up each day for hours of slip away reading. Jodi has a way of making you feel as if you we're part of the story, watching as an outsider at times, and at other times, participating as part of the cast. Extraordinary writer at the very least. Riveting, heart breaking and some times laugh out loud story. It will make you look at love and life at its simplest and most complex times.... what would you do if you were there??? Please read!!!
