The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty Book Summary

From Liane Moriarty, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Big Little Lies and Truly Madly Guilty, comes an unforgettable novel defined by her signature sharp wit, page-turning storyline, and lovable and eccentric characters.

Sophie Honeywell always wondered if Thomas Gordon was the one who got away. He was the perfect boyfriend, but on the day he was going to propose, she broke his heart. A year later he married his travel agent, while Sophie has been mortifyingly single ever since. Now Thomas is back in her life because Sophie has unexpectedly inherited his aunt Connie's house on Scribbly Gum Island—home of the famously unsolved Munro Baby mystery.

Sophie moves onto the island and begins a new life as part of an unconventional family, where it seems everyone has a secret. Grace, a beautiful young mother, is feverishly planning a shocking escape from her perfect life. Margie, a frumpy housewife, has made a pact with a stranger, while dreamy Aunt Rose wonders if maybe it's about time she started making her own decisions.

As Sophie's life becomes increasingly complicated, she discovers that sometimes you have to stop waiting around—and come up with your own fairy-tale ending.

Great read!. This is the second book I have read by the author and I enjoyed this just as much as the husbands secret

Absolutely loved this book!. A wonderful story of family with complex and interesting characters and relationships.

Loved!! Five stars!. Best book so far that I've read from this author! Loved each character and while reading, felt like i really knew each and every one of them personally. Spoiler Ahead: I would have liked Sophie and Callum to end up together with a mutual understanding/different course for Grace bc i loved Sophie's character and found Grace to be unworthy, but altogether wonderful read with a good little mystery surprise twist at the very end. Great book.

The Last Anniversary. Great read and some very humorous characters!

Love, Love, Love this book!. Each character in this book was fully developed and became such real people. The story was well-written and unexpectedly perfect. I savored each and every page. Every twist and turn was a surprise. The title is excellent, of course. I also liked the reference to Eva Cassidy’s songs because they’re some of my favorites. She died too young. Overall, I’m deeply thankful for how wonderful this book made me feel!

A wonderful surprise - what a terrific book!. I’d never heard of Liane Moriarty, and had this Kindle edition for months before I finally decided to read it - but after just a few pages, I began kicking myself for the delay. Set in Australia, it mainly features a tight knot of eccentric sisters who have created a cottage industry surrounding the mystery of a couple who completely disappeared, leaving a freshly baked cake and a partially completed crossword puzzle in the kitchen . . . and a tiny baby in the bedroom. It’s probably a chick book, but don’t expect steamy sex - she just nails the thoughts and circumstances that many women have faced in such a funny & insightful way, that you’ll think she extracted them from your own brain or from someone you know. The mystery lingers in the background, with the characters making the book fascinating. If you ever thought that your family was wacky, but lovable, you’ll discover there’s another family here that can certainly top yours! I can’t decide whether I want to read this one again, immediately, or find her next book to see if it’s just as mesmerizing.

The last anniversary. Great....

LOVE. Best book I've read in a long while. Just the right amount of drama and mystery while staying cute and funny. I've read all of Liane's books and this is my fave.

Loved it!. This book was so entertaining and the characters were so interesting I was sad when the book ended and I had to leave them! It has humor, sadness, mystery and intrigue! You will love it!

It won't win a Pulitzer Prize..... .....but I kept my interest for a few days on and off and I do agree it had way too many characters and I had to keep checking back to see who they were. Even at the end I still hadn't kept track of them. I'd call it a beach read, I guess.

Very fun read. I’m a big fan of Moriarty! She has always been talented, this is only her second of her nine novels. Her earlier works are a bit more light hearted and less dramatic than her later ones. There are family dynamics to untangle, a great big mystery, and very dark (exciting!) topics throughout, but not quite as dark and shocking as her more recent works. I’ve never been a person to devour a book, usually enjoy it over a few months, but his was my fastest read in just about 10 days (and I was working 6 back to back 12 hour shifts and got no reading done at work). If you’re looking for a dynamic, fun mystery to burn through quickly, this is your book! If you want something a bit more bold and surprising try The Husband’s Secret, Big Little Lies, or Truly Marly Guilty (the first books to make me cry while flipping pages frantically as I could see it playing out in devastating slow motion before my eyes!) I suspect 9 Perfect Strangers will be her best yet!

One of my favorites from LM. One of my favorite LM books! Couldn’t put it down

Can’t do it. It kills me to pay for a book and not read it. I’ve tried getting thru this book for days and it’s just sooooo boring. I’m waiting for something to happen - anything - to keep me reading and I just can’t. I’m abandoning it about 1/4 way thru!

Loved it!. I just discovered Liane Moriarty and have read 2 books in 2 days! I enjoyed The Last Anniversary as well as The Husband's Secret. I am looking forward to What Alice Forgot. Enjoyable, generational, family saga with secrets and a few twists along the way. A good read.

The last anniversary. I am so glad to have discovered this author. I really enjoy the twists in the story. Well written. Will be reading more

Love!!!. I LOVE THIS AUTHOR! This was such an enjoyable book. All I wanted to do was read it.

Had to force myself to finish - dragged on and on😩.. Had to force myself to finish - dragged on and on😫

Cute, not too crafty. Moriaty’s tale twists and turns, but wraps up too neatly. While the characters are engaging and funny, there are many threads woven that take a little too much effort to detangle. A fun read, but not my favorite work of hers.

Dismal. I've read her other books and liked them. I liked the underlying story of this book but the Sophie plot was a total dud and disappointment.

Binge worthy. I enjoyed this story with its twists and turns! The characters made me want more!

Last Anniversary. I loved it! Very entertaining and I couldn’t put it down.

Great read. I really enjoyed this book. It's an easy read, but keeps you wanting to turn the page. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon on the couch.

The Last Anniversary. Liane Moriarity is one of my most beloved authors. There is not a character she has introduced or story she’s written that has disappointed or left me without a smile. There are days when I like a good solid book with a good solid beginning, middle and end. And humor. Liane Moriarity is good company.

Island Mystery kept secret by family for 70+ years. Scribbly Gum Island in New South Wales, Australia is home to the Munro baby who was abandoned years ago. Her parents, Frank and Alice Munro disappeared. Two teenaged sisters take the child in and raise her as their own. The Island becomes a destination to see the Munro house and hear details about the mysterious night that the baby was found alone, a kettle on to boil and a marble cake just out of the oven. Now things are changing and the four generations still connected to the island may be ready to share the full story. The story centers on Sophie who is the ex-fiancé of a grandson. Her life intertwines with many in the extended family and she moves to the island. Will she be the catalyst to a new openness in the family? I enjoyed learning about the characters in the family. There are enough hints to keep you interested in solving the mystery, but I did not predict the real story before it was revealed. A fun read!

Last time for this author. I downloaded this book because the other reviews made it sound like a good read. This book is written in the 3rd person and has the weirdest storyline I've ever read. I finished it, but only because I paid $1.99 (too much) for it. Don't bother...

The last anniversary. Good, but so much jumping from one character to another. Too many names to remember and place. But inspire of that, an enjoyable slow read

Don’t bother!. I waited expectantly for a reveal on the “mystery” going back 73 years, only to discover the ridiculous truth. What follows for every character was just as dumb and not even a little believable or relatable! Started out liking where it was going, finished feeling so let down!

Great read!!!. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the first page to the last. It was very well written and not at all predictable. I loved the characters. This is the first book I've read by this author but definitely not the last!

A must read!. I never, ever write reviews but this book drew me out of the shadows. It's funny and revealing and makes you take a look at your own life and the secrets you might be keeping. Beautifully done!

Great story. Great story and kept me wanting to read more!

Not sure how I fell after the end!!. Im huge fan of this author, all her books made me read non stop till I finish! With this one wasn’t different, but as different of her other books , made me a lil disappointed when i realized was the last page! I would expect a bit more different direction for one of character!

Entertaining. Great and compelling book that kept your interest from start to end. Enjoyed all the characters and secrets......

Love it!. I really liked this book. Great unique story. No offensive language or sex scenes. Easy read. Couldn't put it down. I was sorry to come to the end. I want to read more of the characters lives.

Excellent. This book has such wonderfully rich characters and the story keeps you involved all the way through. Her writing is true to human nature, not all characters/moments in the book are pretty and polished. Their experiences are raw and truthful at times and surreal at times. After reading three of her books, I think she is a great writer of characters and an intriguing storyteller.

Fun read. Enjoyed!
