The Pearl by John Steinbeck, Linda Wagner-Martin & Jose Clemente Orozco Book Summary

“There it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon.”

Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security....

A story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love.

The Pearl. Great book! I would highly recommend reading this! Steinbeck does an amazing job creating a simple story that we can relate to. Will definitely read his other books.

The Pearl. We read this book in English and it was great!

Don't read!. This is honestly the worst book I have ever read. It's hard to follow and the main characters are idiots.

The pearl. Spoiler alert the kid dies and they throw the pearl on the ocean and lose everything.

Wow not what I had expected!. My English teacher gave this to us as a summer assignment, and I must say I wasn't too happy about it. But the very last words she had said to us was, "This book will scar you for life!" And believe when I tell you this, IT DID!!!!

Only buy if.... You should only read this book with a group or a class. This book needs to be discussed with people. Don't buy this book if you're going to read this independently

Why is EVERY required English Class book violent, depressing, gory, etc?. I have to read this book in my grade 8 English Honors class. It is the most tragic and depressing book I have read. On pages 1-2, the story starts pleasantly. Then everything goes downhill. From page 3 on, the book is depressing and violent. (SPOILER) First the baby gets stung by a scorpion. After about twenty pages, the baby gets fed an emetic, compounding with the scorpion bite. Then somebody attacks the main character. Then another person attacks the main character. Then his wife tries to throw the pearl into the ocean, so the main character beats her up and leaves her for dead. Then the main character gets attacked AGAIN (is anybody seeing a trend here?) and kills his attacker in defense. Then his prize possession, his grandfather’s canoe, gets wrecked. After having their spirits brutally broken, the main character and his family flee, turned into animals being hunted by trackers. That night, the main character goes to kill the trackers. After hearing the baby cry, the hunters shoot the top of his head off. In his rage, the main character kills all of the trackers. The book ends with the main character and his wife coming into town, spirits completely demolished (with nothing left to live for), and throwing the pearl into the ocean, making them just as poor as they were in the beginning. (END SPOILERS) If you don’t have to, don’t read this book. It does convey a good message (which could also be suppressed by the looming threat of an essay), but is it really worth the tears shed?

Boring. It started out slow. I had to read this for class and I was so excited when we finally finished this book.

Fitting. Read this in fifth grade love the metaphors my older brother got named Kino because my mom read this book while she was sons chill to and loved it great story I love how John used the ants as a metaphor to compare how it was different on both sides.

The Pearl. A quick read with a lot of lessons worth undertanding.

The Pearl. I really like this book I just got done reading it in class, and I could not believe that because Kino was soo greedy that he beat up his wife. He let his son Coyotito die from a bullet and had Juana carry him just because of money. At the end they threw the pearl back into the ocean and lost his son.

I haven't read this book. It seems good.😄😃😀😊☺️😉😍😘😚😗😙😜😝😛😳😁😔😌😒😞😣😢😂😭😪😥😰😅😓😩😫😨😱😠😡😤😖😆😋😷😎😴😵😲😟😦😧😈👿😮😬😐😕😯😶😇😏😑👲👳👮👷💂👶👦👧👨👩👴👵👱👼👸😺😸😻😽😼🙀😿😹😾👹👹👺🙈🙉🙊💀👽💩🔥✨🌟💫💥💢💦💧💤💨👂👀👃👅👄👍👎👌👊✊✌️👋✋👐👆👇👉👈🙌🙏☝️👏💪🚶🏃💃👫👬👭💏👯🙆🙅💁🙋💆💇💅👰🙎🙍🙇🎩👑👒👟👞👡👠👢👕👔👚👗🎽👖👘👙💼👜👝👝

The Pearl. Great book

The Pearl. Actually one of the worst books I’ve ever read.

Kinda boring. This book is boring In my perspective

This is a good book!. I chose this book to read for summer reading and l did not regret it this book was very good except for the end but other than that l think people should read this book it’s very interesting.

LOVED IT!!!!😄😄😄. This book was obviously made for people with more reading skills and open minds. You have to look at the details to really understand and analyze it. If you have someone or a class (like me) to discuss it with, it's an amazing, deep book

This Sucked. I was forced to read this book for class and i HATED it. first of all, this review is not for people who like analyzing literature becuse that is the majority of the book. But even if you enjoy that theres too much description of stuff that doesnt matter. there was a point where he spent 3 pages describing the beach, thats just as many pages as there was actual action. Also the ending sucked and was unnecessary. -978243879423042/10

It was so sad. At the end coyotito dies!

The pearl. I hated every part of this book. If 0 stars was an option this book would be 0 stars. The main character is just horrible

Sooo freakin boring. It's basically about a pearl and what happens when a poor fisherman finds it. So old it should be public domain.

Great read. I read The Pearl in school and again now as an adult. This well-crafted tale of the transformational force of greed maintains its relevance today.

The Pearl. This is a great book!

Dislike. Some parts were boring. Not all

Beautiful.. This book is just simply amazing, and the storyline is very interesting. Except, why such a high price?

Love it. "To want to much of something is bad, it sometimes drives the luck away." A line from the book I love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

English. I'm reading the book for my eight grade English class. I only wish it were cheaper. .-. But I like it so far. :)

Steinbeck's done it again.. A brilliant story of how money can change a man's personality. Beautiful.

The pearl. Nicely structured with perfectly tailored and advance language.

Good book. It was a good book but it didn't really have a setting and what time it took place

It's a good book for middle school reading. After I read this book, I think it's very boring but it is a good book to read in middle school and a good book to teach for Literature.

Everyone. People say it is a boring book but they aren’t explaining why. I have this book as one of my choices to read for a class project. I wish they would explain why they don’t like it because I want to make an informed decision on wether or not I want to read this book.

WORST ENDING EVER. The story itself was good and interesting, but I think the ending was pretty sad and unexpected. Really wish it could have had a different ending

The Pearl. The seventy-eight pages of introduction, filled with political opinion, convinced me to not bother reading the book.

Gfgf. Booooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiiingggggggggggggggg!

Sucked. Baby dies Pearl is evil there saved us $5 bucks

the pearl. i do not like the end

Insurmountable Mountains. The Pearl is perhaps Steinbeck’s most beautiful novella despite its harrowing conclusion. Descriptions leap off the page and inner emotions are conveyed via primal truths an average writer couldn’t express. The musical motifs and fable-esque quality invokes mysticisms as the lowly protagonist is crushed by the system he tries to ascend.

ray. the book was good after all but needed more thing in it

This is not right. I’m supposed to know the correct page number and it dose t tell the correct one

Good solid book. I really liked this book but I hated the way my lititure teacher taught it to me

I hated this. +SPOILERS AHEAD+ Baby gets sick, they find a pearl, it’s evil, they almost die, the baby does tho, and the pearl is back in the ocean. +END OF SPOILERS+ There. Now you don’t have to read it. I normally like what I read but I hated this book. It has an unnecessary amount of descriptions. It has close to 100 pages when it could be taken down to 40, removing 60 pages of descriptions still making the book interesting. Also I would normally read this book in just a couple of hours but I found it SO boring it took me two weeks to read. I do not recommend this. If zero stars were an option I would pick it. If you don’t have to read it, then don’t.

Solid Book. The Pearl was a solid book. I had to read it for my ap English class. A little too much description but a good book otherwise.

It ok. I am reading the book in my ela class and we are on chapter 4 and I kinda like it and others should read it

The Pearl. Terrible!

Interesting!. The story was very intriguing, kept me interested :-)

Yuck. Don't ever read this book! EVER!!!!

Good. I thought it was good

The Pearl. This is an amazing story! I definitely recommend, it is not long but intense.

Very Nice Book. It was a very nice read.
