Russian Winter Book Reviews
Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay Book Summary
“A soaring debut novel. An elegant, compelling puzzle of family, memory and solitude that brings to life modern-day Boston and postwar Russia through a profound love story. Graceful, moving, and unexpected.” —Matthew Pearl, New York Times bestselling author of The Dante Club
In Russian Winter, a famed ballerina’s jewelry auction in Boston reveals long-held secrets of love and family, friendship and rivalry, harkening back to Stalinist Russia. Called “tender, passionate, and moving” by Jenna Blum, the New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Save Us, Russian Winter is a perfect choice for fans of the novels of Ann Patchett (Bel Canto), and Ian McEwan (Atonement).
When Nina Revskaya puts her remarkable jewelry collection up for auction, the former Bolshoi Ballet star finds herself overwhelmed by memories of her homeland, and of the events, both glorious and heartbreaking, that changed her life half a century earlier. It was in Russia that she discovered the magic of dance and fell in love, and where, faced with Stalinist aggression, a terrible discovery incited a deadly act of betrayal—and an ingenious escape to the West.
Nina has kept her secrets for half a lifetime. But now Drew Brooks, an inquisitive associate at a Boston auction house, and Grigori Solodin, a professor who believes Nina's jewels hold the key to unlocking his past, begin to unravel her story—setting in motion a series of revelations that will have life-altering consequences for them all.

Russian Winter. The writer almost has a good book
Russian winter. Interesting. But difficult to follow different time lines.
Boring. This book seems to be a good idea, but it was dry and uneventful. It amazes me how editors find this sellable to the public. Don't waste your time and money.
Engaging and good read. This is n engrossing book, combining personal history with Russian history with an interesting mystery. I won’t go into what the book is about as it’s already been well noted by other reviewers. The Russian history and how difficult a time it was as well as really getting into the thoughts of the characters are this book’s strengths. Likewise, it’s interesting to see how the auction houses work and how things are catalogued. Each chapter begins with a description of the jewels being auctioned and the descriptions lead into the chapters and align nicely. There is a parallel to the 2 main female characters, Nina and Drew; both are closed off, stuck in their past and haunted by memories and neither women are warm nor endearing. Although, I felt that Nina becomes so and her character evolves more throughout the book. I did not find Drew’s story nearly as interesting or was there enough about her that made me want to know more about her. So here is where the book fell short for me and was the difference between a good book and a great one. The male characters, I felt, were much more interesting and colorful. I would have appreciated more details of the history of Russia at that time and would have loved to learn more about Nina’s journey from Russia to the US. Perhaps making Drew a bit more interesting would have made this book a bit more satisfying.
Russian Winter. Worst book I've read in the last couple of years. I chose it because my daughter is a ballerina but had to labor to finish it.
Russian Winter. I really loved this book.Very well written and a great story!
Stupid. Hi this is bad book
Russian Winter. I enjoyed reading this book very much ... That period in history is so heart wrenching !!! I pray that could and would not ever happen again !!! I also enjoy the info. On the amber.... Would love to hear you are going to write a sequel to Russian Winter ... Thank you for the great reading !!!
Great read. This is a lovely book that stretches across timelines with the quirky characters in Stalin's Russia to the young, inquisitive, auction house appraiser. As I am a history buff, I found this interesting. Plus my favorite gemstone was the star element....amber.
