Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok Book Summary

From the author of Searching for Sylvie Lee, the iconic, New York Times-bestselling debut novel that introduced an important Chinese-American voice with an inspiring story of an immigrant girl forced to choose between two worlds and two futures.

When Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate from Hong Kong to Brooklyn squalor, she quickly begins a secret double life: exceptional schoolgirl during the day, Chinatown sweatshop worker in the evenings. Disguising the more difficult truths of her life—like the staggering degree of her poverty, the weight of her family's future resting on her shoulders, or her secret love for a factory boy who shares none of her talent or ambition—Kimberly learns to constantly translate not just her language but herself back and forth between the worlds she straddles.

Through Kimberly's story, author Jean Kwok, who also emigrated from Hong Kong as a young girl, brings to the page the lives of countless immigrants who are caught between the pressure to succeed in America, their duty to their family, and their own personal desires, exposing a world that we rarely hear about. Written in an indelible voice that dramatizes the tensions of an immigrant girl growing up between two cultures, surrounded by a language and world only half understood, Girl in Translation is an unforgettable and classic novel of an American immigrant-a moving tale of hardship and triumph, heartbreak and love, and all that gets lost in translation.

A Girl in Translation. A decent read. Excellent descriptions - I felt as though I could really visualize the scenes. The plot was extremely predictable, but still captivating.

Great book...not so great ending. The book was goin so good but what kinda ending was that! Ughhh.... I want more.

Moving Story. Beautifully written story of Kim, a young Chinese immigrant , who with her mother faces unbelievable hardship and exploitation as they make their way in their new home.

Beautiful and moving. Highly recommend

Nice Read!. very good read ! I could not put down the book until I finished reading it!

You won't be disappointed. Being a Chinese myself, I find it easy for me to relate to the culture, the believes and conversations of this book. Easy reading. I like how it reminds me of the way my parents used to raise me. With integrity and dignity.

Was good until the ending. I enjoyed the story but I did not understand the character's choices at the end of the book, it seemed too rushed.

Awesome. Very good read hard to put down

Girl in Translation. Excellent book. A very different look at diversity and the challenges around cultural norms.

Amazing story!. It made me cry; it is so simple and heart-breaking

Very enjoyable. Loved this, well written, sensitive and reveals a lot about a culture and community that is not well covered in the 'mainstream' -- great airplane book that doesn't make you feel like you are going brain dead

Great summer pool/beach read.. Fun, touching and thought provoking.

Girl in translation. Charming, and at times alarming, to feel the depth of the struggle for survival in these characters. Heartfelt and sincere reflections on the human condition. I was sorry to get to the end.

Great read. Read the book in one day. Loved it

Reality to some.. A wonderful book.

A must buy. OMG I read this book like 3 times and will read it another 100 times, the beginning may seem a little bit boring but just wait until chapter two. It kept me on my toes and I couldn't put it down!!!! It gets a little bit steamy in the middle ending part, but if you can handle it definetly read! Worth very penny!!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! I'm goingt to try not to spoil too much but I can't say what I'm about to say without a little bit of a spoiler, I absolutely love the book the ending really mad me sad. I couldn't stop thinking about the book for DAYS! Matt ( the factory boy) always mad ME blush with everything he said, curt ( a boy the main character Kimberly hooks up with at her prep school she is on a full scholar ship on) made me happy that there are some decent guys out there that aren't so superficial even if they are rich. This is where the real SPOILER comes: when she is at her school just about to leave she is playfully hitting curt her boyfriend when Matt her TRUE love comes crying, she chases after him they have a very short discussion get home, and well that's the steamyish part. Ugh love the book MUST BUY!!!

Girl in Translation. A great book! This book gives you an example of inner drive, dedication, perseverance, love in all forms, gratefulness, tradition, and friendship. It can not help, but to add perspective regarding socioeconomic status. I would recommend this book to everyone. Ask yourself, "Why do you do what you do?" "Ah-Kim, the main character in the book does. If more people knew the world would be less chaotic. We need reason. This book provides the most eccentric amount of character. Read It!

Eh.... This book was well-written and i was fully into it with positive thoughts most of the way through. However, there is a serious flaw about 100 pages from the end when the author just skips ahead 12 years in the story and seems to just want to tie it all up in a nice neat bow. THAT was a major turnoff... Dont buy it.

An act of kindness goes a long way..... That's what I kept thinking when reading this book. This book was so easy to get hooked on. All I keep thinking about now is to keep my eyes open to poverty and how a little something could mean the world for another. I want to do more for the world, because this book was not only a great story of hardship but so inspirational too. Shame on you Auntie P. :) A must read. Will there be a sequel? True love is real.

A thrall of enjoyment!. I spent my Sunday reading this novel and I’m glad to say it was well spent. Hearing Kimberly’s story was empowering and enriching and I’m glad I spent my time this way!

Girl in Translation. A very good read! I highly recommend it.

Girl in Translation. Wow!! Enjoyed this story,I felt as if it is truly non fiction... Love all the Chinese saying, beliefs etc... Now I will always comb my bangs three times to the left.. Of course to protect myself from evil spirits..

Amazing Book. I cried, I laughed & I cheered all the way through this book. So awesome!! And The end was done so well I came away believing!

Breathtaking. Loved it

Amazing. So powerful, loved it.

Great. Great read!

Worth a read but tanks at the end. I loved the way the Author uses the language and ideas of the Chinese culture. A classic coming of age story about a brilliant, immigrant girl and her mother. The story gets good but doesn't ring true in the conclusion. I kept reading and was disappointed in the end. SPOILER ALERT!! Don't wish to spoil it so I'll stop here but suffice it to say why would a brilliant off-the- charts smart woman keep her son from its father? It doesn't make sense, good up until the end so I'll give it 3.5 stars.

Girl in translation. Loved it! The journey of Kimberly's new life in another country, her many challenges and her determination were captivating.

Girl in translation. Well worth reading.

great story. really enjoyed it and months after reading it i still miss it

Girl in Translation. A super amazing read! "sometimes our fate is different from the one we have planned" beautiful life lessons taught !

BEST BOOK. I love this book so much. It's told from a different perspective about a life of a highly intelligent woman/girl. It's thought provoking, not a lighthearted love book. It's personally one of my favorite books. It's inspiring to see the main character work though all of her problems, and emerge victorious. It reminds me that no country or life is perfect, but working hard for yourself can change that. MUST READ! I highly recommend it!

This one's a must read!. This book is a thoughtful, provoking (almost) fairy tale. The hardship in this book is unrelenting. I felt for all the characters and rooted for all of them. For those that say this books characters are not developed well, and that it's repetitive in nature regarding the work at the factory, I say that's the point of the thing. It's a coming of age book about a girl with unbelievable responsibility and hardship who takes on the responsibility of not only herself and her mother, but also those around her.

Girl in Translation. Loved this book. Great narration from the beginning to the end. I read it in one day. I liked the end.

Perfect for a long trip and a quick read. If you're looking for something that is easy to read, engaging and doesn't require too much of an emotional commitment to the characters and the plot, this is the perfect book. It's more substantial than a "pool-side read", but there were still many predictable parts and under-developed or rushed moments throughout the novel, which made it harder to connect with the characters. Nevertheless, the author did her best to breathe life into each one, and perhaps her future works will contain more complex characters. All in all, it's a successful first novel, and I eagerly await more from J. Kwok!

Easily my favorite book. I was required to read this book going into my sophomore year of high school. I’m not an avid reader but this book was absolutely amazing! It was written very well and I’m so glad that the author decided to share her story. This gave me hope as a young girl who hasn’t grown up as privileged as my peers due to the fact that I go to a all girls private school in a very wealthy town. Thank you for that. 👏🏾👏🏾

So great. I couldn't stop reading it. Such a great story. It will definitely ge one I reread.

One of the best ever. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story told by a character you really grow to love. Jean Kwok is now on my list of favorite authors. I can't wait to read her next work!
