Rolling Thunder Book Reviews
Rolling Thunder by Mark Berent Book Summary
Rolling Thunder is an historical novel about the decisive role politics played during the Vietnam War. Its characters range from men in the field to the Pentagon and the White House. Fighter pilots and Special Forces warriors try to do their best but are hampered by President Johnson, Secretary of Defense McNamara, and their staff members who despise the military. Only one aging USAF general, who fought in Korea and WWII, is on their side. His clashes with his Commander in Chief, Lyndon Johnson, are epic in proportion and startling in content.
In Rolling Thunder, the time is late 1965 and 1966 in war zone places such as Saigon, Hanoi, Bien Hoa, Da Nang, and Tahkli. While back in Washington, LBJ sits over lunch and personally picks bombing targets in an attempt to fight a limited war. In Vietnam the war knows no limits.
There, as the hostilities escalate, the fates of three men intertwine: USAF Captain Court Bannister, overshadowed by a famous movie star father who fought in WWII as a B-17 gunner, driven to confront missiles, MiGs, and nerve-grinding bombing raids in order to prove his worth to his comrades -- and to himself...Air Force First Lieutenant Toby Parker, fresh from the States, who hooks up with an intelligence unit for a lark, and quickly finds his innocence buried away by the lessons of war...and Special Forces Colonel Wolf Lochert, who ventures deep into the jungle to rescue a downed pilot -- only to discover a face of the enemy for which he is unprepared.
Four airline stewardesses, who fly the civilian MAC contract flights that bring American soldiers to and from the war zone in Vietnam, have difficult love affairs with G.I.s and fighter pilots. After one flight they come under attack while on an airbase in Vietnam.
Young American G.I.s are cursed and taunted as they return to the United States.
Through their eyes, and those of many others -- pilots, soldiers, lovers, enemy agents, commanders, politicians, profiteers -- Rolling Thunder shows us Vietnam as few other books have, or can. Berent captures all the intensity and drama of that searing war, and more, penetrates to the heart and soul of those who fought it. Rolling Thunder rings with authenticity

A reminder to us all. Thank you for a great book that reminds us of the sacrifice of so many. God Bless our Vets. This should be required reading for all seeking the Oval Office.
Rolling Thunder. This is about the Vietnam war. I didn't understand the lingo etc but got the gist of it. Warning: language and sex.
SH. Sierra Hotel!
Top flight. I enjoyed Rolling Thunder immensely. My time in Vietnam Nam was aboard the USS America CVA 66, on Yankee Station. I spent much of my free time topside watching the planes being launched and recovered from missions I wished to be flying myself. Reading this book took me back to those heady days when we all lived as close to the edge as possible. I could almost smell the fumes of full throttle launches. Great story!
Rolling Thunder. This has to be one of the best and truest accounts of the real Vietnam debacle which cost this nation over 52,000 men and women an accomplished absolutely nothing but making some people very rich. I do not regret the tour I made at Ubon as a member of a weapons load team, but I still mourn the loss of some of the finest fighting men this country has sent into battle. Our government absolutely just threw away the men and women who were killed in action and are still dying from various diseases from exposure to Agent Orange and it's Dioxins that were sprayed over almost the entire war zone.
Rolling Thunder. This book is a fascinating look into the early Vietnam air war. Very authentic, it provides a detailed look at the details of fighter combat, and the legendary F-100 aircraft. A don't miss for aviation and military history fans.
Political errs lead to dangerous air!. Mark Berent takes you on a journey from the air campaign to the raw emotions of combat hardened airmen. It is a fantastic, can’t-put-it-down perspective of the warriors who carried out the impossible missions of a war bungled by politicians but fought by heroic men and women.
Rolling Thunder. Outstanding!
Hi. It's great
Rolling Thunder. A must read for veterans. I served a year, 1968, with EB-66s, and this story captures the essence, heroism and tragedy of the Vietnam war.
The Flavor & Stink of LBJ’s War. If you were a combat grunt, helicopter or fixed wing pilot, lost some brothers came home to deal with ignorant peaceniks, and or were unable to understand the “spinning & lying” press, you will relate to this book...!
A Great Vietnam saga by a veteran aviator.. A well written story by someone who knew first hand the air action in Vietnam. It would be more readable if it did not use justified text in the format. To me justification makes the text seem choppy. Patric Phoenix, AZ

A must read series on the Vietnam War. Berent spins a great tale with enough history to make your blood boil at the sheer incompetence and traitorous behaviour of key figures from that time. Having spent three months in Vietnam and south east Asia crawling over many of the the locations he writes about and having spoken to many who fought on the other side, I am convinced that Berent”s story is more truth than fiction.
Spot on. Spot on read, especially interesting because I lived in Hanoi for 18 months and lived on the lake when John McCain crashed. I also worked in Thai Nguyen and Haiphong.
