Faithful Place by Tana French Book Summary

From Tana French, author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter, “the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years” (The Washington Post), the New York Times bestseller called “the most stunning of her books” (The New York Times) and a finalist for the Edgar Award.

Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping hisi family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for granted that she'd dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again. Neither did Rosie. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up behind a fireplace in a derelict house on Faithful Place, and Frank, now a detective in the Dublin Undercover squad, is going home whether he likes it or not.

Sad and Wistful. Ms. French has again written a very good story. Alas, she has a way of leaving her readers with answers to the mysteries, but with a sadness relating to her characters, many of whom are very flawed human beings.

Beautiful Book. A great story and so well written! Not a fast read, but a story that deserves the time to sink your teeth into its beauty.

Faithful Place. Simply marvelous! The reader is a participant in this wrenching vivid tale of family ties. I caught myself with a heart racing a couple of times and I hoped to go uninterrupted in my reading. This is a creative masterpiece.

Faithful Place. Blah blah blah... Once you read the first tedious chapters you can guess who the killer is. What is supposed to be charming Irish neighborhood memories is boring, repetitive background detail. If you want a well written novel involving family conflict read "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck.

Good but not great. A bit predictable and easy to guess the solve for the mystery. As with French's other novels there are hanging threads in the end....

Good story and plot…but predictable ending. Great story line and character development, but predictable outcome which seemed thrown together at the end for the sake of bringing the story to a close.

Review. Found it to be a very entertaining, but did not keep intensely intrigued like the previous books. I just fall in love with her writing, but this one is quite predictable.

Foggy & Cozy. This is my absolute favorite book. There’s an immense amount of detail in French’s writing that will make you fall in love with the character and his story. The atmosphere is foggy and cozy, to me. Perfect for a rainy day alone.

Hard to review. This book is hard to review. The protagonist is Frank Mackey who was first introduced in The Likeness (which i loved!) But he’s a difficult character to like. Most of the book involves him interactiombg with his lower class Dublin family that he has avoided for 20 years. Tana French is an amazing writer, and her depiction of the family is very authentic, but maybe too authentic. These are not pleasant people, and just about every scene devolves into a drunken argument. As much as i enjoyed the writing, there’s only so much of this annoying family i can take. But as always Tana French pulls it off and creates a poignant story of human experience, love, loss, and longing, disguised as a murder mystery.

Excellent Writing. I am thoroughly enjoying this series; the author is far more talented than the average mystery writer. She has occasional lapses in the “suspension of disbelief” department, but otherwise, the stories are wonderfully engaging.

Nice read. Although, not her best...

Not quite In the Woods but a good quick read. I'm not usually a mystery/thriller type reader but I happened upon In the Woods a few months back and couldn't put it down. Naturally I wanted to see what else Tana French had up her sleeve. As usual, character development didn't disappoint. French does an excellent job of weaving together characters' pasts with the present as an explanation of the plot. It remained one of my favorite things about this book. Setting is also huge for me and again, all of my descriptive needs were met. In reading the oftentimes long descriptions of streets of Ireland, back gardens, and crime scenes I could imagine myself there. Lastly, the story itself kept my attention and made it hard to put down. I'm refraining from offering up the fifth star only because I liked In the Woods better. If you're even remotely interested in crime stories or great settings I would highly recommend this.

Predictable, limp ending. Unlikable narrator.. I guessed whodunnit very early on in the book. You probably will too. And I was given next to no surprises or worthwhile plot twists for the rest of it. The book had a promising premise, but my god was I bored. I found myself skimming over several pages worth of meaningless descriptions, and even when the whole thing was done and dusted and the culprit was identified, we’re treated to a couple more chapters of sleep-inducing fluff. And about a hundred loose ends. I honestly don’t understand how this got published. The characters are incredibly flat and one-dimensional, didn’t care about any of them. The protagonist is cocky and irritating, and his dialogues are extremely cringe-worthy. I couldn’t understand how he didn’t get slapped in the face more often. The only scenes where he somewhat redeems himself are the scenes with his daughter. I never once found myself getting absorbed in the novel. It’s tough to really want to immerse yourself in a story where the narrator’s a pain in the rear and can’t shut up about his every trivial thought. It’s a pity. I really loved the gripping, unputdownable journey that was In The Woods. The characters were complex and realistic. So I expected the same caliber for this novel. It appears Tana French is something of a one-hit-wonder.

A bit... No, much too predictable. I liked her other efforts more
