Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher Book Summary

The bestselling author of Postcards from the Edge comes clean (well, sort of) in her first-ever memoir, adapted from her one-woman Broadway hit show. Fisher reveals what it was really like to grow up a product of “Hollywood in-breeding,” come of age on the set of a little movie called Star Wars, and become a cultural icon and bestselling action figure at the age of nineteen.

Intimate, hilarious, and sobering, Wishful Drinking is Fisher, looking at her life as she best remembers it (what do you expect after electroshock therapy?). It’s an incredible tale: the child of Hollywood royalty—Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher—homewrecked by Elizabeth Taylor, marrying (then divorcing, then dating) Paul Simon, having her likeness merchandized on everything from Princess Leia shampoo to PEZ dispensers, learning the father of her daughter forgot to tell her he was gay, and ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Wishful Drinking, the show, has been a runaway success. Entertainment Weekly declared it “drolly hysterical” and the Los Angeles Times called it a “Beverly Hills yard sale of juicy anecdotes.” This is Carrie Fisher at her best—revealing her worst. She tells her true and outrageous story of her bizarre reality with her inimitable wit, unabashed self-deprecation, and buoyant, infectious humor.

BOOOOORING!. If you can get thru this book without skipping paragraphs or whole chapters, look me up and I'll give you five bucks, the whole price you paid for this book.😉

self indulgent nonsense. I could not care less about her bi-polar problem or her drinking etc. I had major heart surgery this year, but I saw no need to write a book about it.

Carrie Fisher Fan. I haven't read this book yet, but I heard it was good and funny! And I also can't believe what happened to Princess Leia a few weeks ago 😔😔😔

Laughed so hard. If you ever watch a Carrie Fisher interview of her Star Wars days, she is so dignified and soft spoken but after reading this book I can assure you she has changed, in a good way though. I loved her comitic humor on her personal life and truly wished it was a longer read.

Truly Honest. I enjoyed the simple clear style of writing. Carrie opened her life for all to see. Very honest and upbeat. Being manic depressive is a challenge and she described her swings well. Overall, a very informative and entertaining read !!

Spare me!. Carrie is a deeply troubled adult and I commend her honest depiction of her "crazy" life. The book quickly goes down hill. Her stories are all over the place and not very interesting. This book could have used a good editor with a giant eraser. The over use of parentheses to insert Carrie's "funny" add ons, is maddenly annoying! Carrie is the only one that gets a laugh from her histrionic behavior. Not funny, not inspiring, not worth the $$$$.

Princess Leia is brave and funny!. I found this book to be very entertaining and funny. I am glad that Carrie can still laugh after all the bipolar incidents that have consumed her life. I loved her as an actress and now as a great writer.

Disappointed. This read like her television show script. However, not sure it would qualify as a book because it was so short. I don't feel like I got the value for which I paid ($11). Very short book.

Awesome and funny. She was such a talented writer and actress! I've loved her Star Wars movies and ALL her books. She was a talented and funny woman in every way.

Hello dear, it's your fan!. WOW! Such a cleverly written book. It definitely puts a good perspective on how crazy your own family is in relation to others including entertainers. Carrie has found herself in this wonderful and amazing world even though she has been diagnosed bipolar. Can't wait to read the next. -R

A Bipolar of a Ride. I've never taken the time to read up on actors who I like; I figure its none of my business what they do in their spare time as long as they take me that magical place I call Movie Land. Carrie Fisher's character in Star Wars took me to that place many time and I thank her and the rest of the clan. I saw her book cover at the local grocery store and I thought why not. I am glad I did. She is pretty normal in my book, aside from the pills and mental disorder she is pretty normal. She so eloquently illustrated in her wonderful busy head her life in a couple hundred + pages. I want to read more because now it is my business. I gave it 5 stars because this is the first book, and I've been reading for over 30 years, the first book that I could not stop reading. I read the book in one night. I am not only proud of myself because I can now say I couldn't put the book down but I am proud I made it my business to read something from Carrie Fisher that just made me laugh. You can't feel sorry for her because she still standing. She's ballsy...I like ballsy. So now I like the two sides of Carrie Fisher; The Princess and The Writer. Thanks, Nancy Zambrano

Wishful Drinking. Just read this while stuck at the mechanic waiting 4hrs for an oil change that turned into a$650 repair😖💸. Carrie Fisher is quite the talented writer and storytellers well as actor & singer. Oh and she's funny, which I find always makes a book better to read. It's a sad story of her crazy, addicted life, but she tells it in such a way as to keep one wanting to read more. Some of it is a bit shocking (if true), as in her mother offering to experiment with marijuana with her when she was only 13. I prefer true stories and biographies to fiction so I enjoyed the book and the online price of $4.99 was reasonable. I couldn't quite give 5 stars but thought 4 was appropriate. R.I.P. both Carrie and Debbie.

Fun read. This memoir is more of an insight into the thought process of a bipolar person than it is a memoir of a drug addict. It's interesting to read from that standpoint alone, plus it is very funny, entertaining, and light hearted. Carrie Fisher doesn't take herself too seriously, which is great. She doesn't go into any morbid details about her addiction. It plays a different kind of role in this book, which left me curious. Overall, a fun read.

Love it. I found myself wishing it was longer!

Funny and Moving. Great book! It made me laugh. Wonderful look into her life and family. 👍🏻👍🏻

Great book. ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE

All for $$$. She doesn't even go in to detail about her alcohol/drug problem. What a waste of time and money. She's just broke and needs a few bucks. Very pathetic. DELETE!
