The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom Book Summary

Kathleen Grissom, New York Times bestselling author of the highly anticipated Glory Over Everything, established herself as a remarkable new talent with The Kitchen House, now a contemporary classic. In this gripping novel, a dark secret threatens to expose the best and worst in everyone tied to the estate at a thriving plantation in Virginia in the decades before the Civil War.

Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, young, white Lavinia arrives on the steps of the kitchen house and is placed, as an indentured servant, under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food, while guided by the quiet strength and love of her new family.

In time, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. She attempts to straddle the worlds of the kitchen and big house, but her skin color will forever set her apart from Belle and the other slaves.

Through the unique eyes of Lavinia and Belle, Grissom’s debut novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds.

Highly recommend. Simply Wonderful.

Great Read. I lovedddddd this book and I recommend it to any and everyone to read

Wonderful Read!. I bought this book on a whim, and what a wonderful surprise it was. A gripping book that brings you into the family and will leave you speechless.

One of the best I’ve read. A little slow to start, but I quickly became engaged in the story and couldn’t wait to finish. One of the best novels I’ve read in a long time.

A highly recommended read. Very compelling read. Great character development. Fast pace. Tragic storyline with consistently depressing layers. But, knowing the likely truth in much of the narrative relative to the time and setting, necessary to face so as to create a modicum of perspective and a great deal of empathy.

The Kitchen House. I was pulled into this story immediately and breathed every word of it. Fascinating and insightful!

Loved. One of my favorites . You get very attached to the characters :)

The kitchen House. I could not put it down I found it very compelling! Loved the characters

Couldn’t put it down. The two voices in the book spoke to me. I identified with each woman’s commitment to keep the peace - for the ones they cared about as well as themselves, yet was so sad when each decision seems to escape them and go awry.

Enjoyable. This book is a great READ!! I couldn't put the book down, but when I did I started to think about the book & it felt as if I were watching a "lifetime mini series" which would be awesome if were made into a mini series 👍 All in all again this book was a wonderful made story!!

The Ktchen House. Excellent read.

The kitchen house. Excellent. I couldn't put this book down. I was lost in another time feeling for each character, my heart pounding while I felt their pain, anxiety and suffering. Thank you for an enlightening and heartfelt read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

The Kitchen House. The author did an outstanding job making the reader feel the emotions of the characters. You quickly bond with most of them and hate others. Excellent story

Thoroughly Enjoyed!. The characters literally jumped off the pages for me. I cared about each one, almost from the start. I lost sleep be cause I was fully engaged. Hope this one becomes a movie; although from minds eye I have already seen it!!!

Kitchen House. Amazing. Couldn't put it down.

The Kitchen House. Amazingly good read! Well crafted characters came alive as you follow the story line that feel so unbelievably real you'd have thought you are reading a personal memoirs😚.

Amazing. I loved this book so much I also listened to the audio version once I had finished reading it. Highly recommend it.

A Must Read!. I have read this book over fifty times since I purchased this over two years ago📖 I felt like I knew each character...I know that's how the author wants you to feel. So powerful, well written and amazing

Kitchen House. Best book ever!!!

Good but bad. Such a good book to read until you get to the end. Why would you end it this way??? So disappointed!

Devastating. It was devastating to read about the lives that were lived back then. My heart breaks for every character. I couldn’t put it down - but I was haunted by it when I wasn’t reading it.

The Kitchen House. The Kitchen House joins my list of top 5 absolute greatest, most treasured, stories that I've read! Among these are The Wild Girl and One Thousand White White Women, both written by Jim Fergus, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, and The Secret Lives of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. I laughed and I cried and when I finished reading and closed the book I held it to my heart & thought what I've always believed, that we are all brothers and sisters in this great big world and to love each other is a gift we give to ourselves. Thank you, Kathleen Grissom, for writing such a beautiful and truthful story.

Predicable. This book was very predicable. It was okay but there are way better written books out there with a similar, or better plot.

Pulled into their lives..... I felt their pain and experienced the joys as the words penetrated my soul. Who has not suffered and felt regrets? This story will allow the reader to look past the pain of our prejudice world and see through the eyes of children the meaning of unconditional love. Excellent story.

Favorite novel. I didn't want to put it down!

Speechless. 5/5. I read the book in 8 hrs more or less. You’re transported into another time. Shed a few tears, laughed, gasped. The illustration included at the beginning gives you a mental a picture of the setting allowing you to feel as though you’re reading about a place you know very well. The feelings of the characters were made to feel my own, I couldn’t help but feel a sort of attachment when reading of the feelings and connections the characters created. The unexpected twists of events and the need to know what happened next would not let me put this book down.

Amazing. This was my first book to purchase and read on my new IPad. I am 71 and trying to get into all the technology available. I couldn't have started with a more inspiring book. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. I also really enjoy this period in our history. Thank you Ms. Grissom for this read. I am anxiously awaiting more and more. Judy Frazier

Kitchen House. What an incredible story! We forget what times were like for women of all races in the 1800's.

Couldn't stop reading. The characters are excellently portrayed. Couldn't put the book down. Great story. Highly recommend this book.

Amazing!!!. I could not put this book down! It's very seldom that I find a book that keeps me so engaged. Hard to imagine how much suffering people endured and still were able to persevere. Would have liked another chapter. Excellent!!

Fabulous story!. Couldn't put this book down. Awesome story that everyone must read.

Compelling!. Excellent read. Makes me want to read more historical fiction and more books by this author. The story is gripping and heart-breaking. I like the author's writing style very much. Highly recommend. Chosen for book club by another member. Initially I was wary but once I started reading I was drawn into this bleak but fascinating world.

Excellent!!. Best book I’ve read in a while.

The Kitchen House. Thank you for a wonderful read! What a gift you have been given with written word and its power to transform the reader to virtually anywhere in any time with clarity and emotion.

One of the best books I’ve ever read!. I could not put this book down!! It was so good. I absolutely loved every minute of it.

The Kitchen House. Absolutely superb!

Well done!. Certainly not my typical read, with vividly dark moments, yet I couldn't put it down. I found the characters well-rounded and found the story captivating even though the story spanned so many years.

Gear read!!. I loved this booked beginning to end!! I do wish the ending would’ve been a little more in depth as to what happened to their lives.

The Kitchen House. I couldn't put this book down. The characters were so real and gripping. If you liked The Help, you will love this book.

Page turner. I could not put this book down and when I did I could hardly wait to pick up where I left off and read the next pages. I loved the characters most of all.

Held my attention. This was an excellent story. I was so surprised that story held my attention as well as it did. I love the characters that were developed and I love that it was not just a typical slavery story. I believe that this book is excellent and that is a great read for anybody.

The Kitchen House. This book was riveting from beginning to end. Unbelievable that these types of activities happened, EVER.

Great read!. Couldn't put this book down. It provided such vivid detail from this very sad time period.

Incredible. I never leave reviews on books but this book.... captivated me from the start. I couldn’t put it down and sad to finish it.

Such a good book. Amazing book. I could not put this down. The author pulls you in and transports you to that period of time. Such an important read!!

😊. Excellent plot and sense of family . Very good read

Excellent Read!. Easy 5 stars! Double narrative storyline gives the two distinctive parallel views of events in this page turning old south novel. Highly emotional and beautifully written novel explores slavery and indentured servitude intimately with fresh insights.

The kitchen house. Just finished reading this book. I already have have a longing for part 2. Well written, intense, easy read.

Great historical fiction. Loved this book. Great read.

Wow. This book captivated me from the very first page, and I could hardly put it down. A true eye opener.

The Kitchen House. A well written, captivating book that I found hard to put down. It was sadly a very teaching book as well. I am grateful that society has moved forward but there is still such a long way to go.... I highly recommend it.

The kitchen house. A wonderful first novel with many believable characters whom bring us into their very souls...the ending came too soon and I'm still wondering what happened to Wil, his wife and their unborn child.
