What Remains by Carole Radziwill Book Summary

A stunning, tragic memoir about John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette, and his cousin Anthony Radziwill, by Radziwill’s widow.

What Remains is a vivid and haunting memoir about a girl from a working-class town who becomes an award-winning television producer and marries a prince, Anthony Radziwill. Carole grew up in a small suburb with a large, eccentric cast of characters. At nineteen, she struck out for New York City to find a different life. Her career at ABC News led her to the refugee camps of Cambodia, to a bunker in Tel Aviv, and to the scene of the Menendez murders. Her marriage led her into the old world of European nobility and the newer world of American aristocracy.

What Remains begins with loss and returns to loss. A small plane plunges into the ocean carrying John F. Kennedy Jr., Anthony’s cousin, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Carole’s closest friend. Three weeks later Anthony dies of cancer. With unflinching honesty and a journalist’s keen eye, Carole Radziwill explores the enduring ties of family, the complexities of marriage, the importance of friendship, and the challenges of self-invention. Beautifully written, What Remains “gets at the essence of what matters,” wrote Oprah Winfrey. “Friendship, compassion, destiny.”

What Remains. It is uncanny that the author’s journey with her husband’s cancer was so similar to my journey with my husband’s cancer. At times I felt as if she was writing about my experiences. I am grateful for the author for being so candid and sincere.

Excellent. Read it

Beautiful. I picked up this book after seeing the author on RHONY. (I know-guilty) I can't say I was surprised at how incredibly well written it is! She is a very gifted writer and a genuine and thoughtful person. This book is so poignant. A very painful story, told with no drama, but with love and loss that I could feel at a cellular level. It's that good. I will surely read all of her books, may she pen many. Thank you Carole, I savored every sentence.

Beautiful and captivating. I have traveled the path of battling cancer with a loved one. I know the heartbreak, the hope and the anguish. The soul crushing loss. The author gives a candid voice to her own journey. What might have otherwise been a fairly tale is made all too real. An honestly told fascinating story. Many thanks and wishes to the author for happiness in the days ahead.

What Remains. I enjoyed this very much, but knowing the end already was hard. So much sadness in the end. Thanks for sharing.

Rad. Loved it

Beautiful!. What a beautiful soul searching love story.

Fantastic memoir. Carole vividly tells her story, and her strength of spirit is truly inspiring.

Wonderful read. I just loved this book. I recently lost a loved one, and I lost my best friend many years ago, so I empathized with Carole in many ways. I actually cried a few times reading it, which is unusual for me. I didn't like how some people were referenced by first name only and I never knew who they were or didn't realize until later. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book!

Heartfelt, powerful, emotional. Very heartfelt story and inside look at the lives behind the scenes. Rings true of emotion and was overall a very powerful read. Definitely worth reading.

What Remains. One of the best books I've ever read. So beautifully written and from the soul.

Amazing. Without a doubt one of the best books on love, heartbreak, and healing...I feel love for Carole Radziwill

Unreal. By far one of THE most incredible books I've ever read. Period.

What Remains. I couldn't stop reading. Such class and elegance thru such pain. Why in the world such a gift is on that show with those women - please just stick with writing!

AMAZING!. This book was moving and beautifully written. It really made me believe that cherishing every moment with your loved ones only makes that memory last longer.

A portrait of the meaning of Grace. The book is written with honesty and candor taking the reader Into the physical and emotional days of a short but beautiful and profound relationship. Cancer takes a backseat to the strength and Forward pull of Anthony and Carole R. It is also a story of friendship, loyalty and power of the human spirit. In the end it is about having Grace- M. B. "What Remains/Carole Radziwelle. Could not put this book down!! Ms Radziwelle is so very talented in the way she writes & and is a wonderful, lyrical user of words & phrases/sentences!! A true "work of love, hope & dreams". She gave me Sooo much helpful imformation as my husband was diagnosed with Non-Hodgins, Follicular Cancer in 2007 &'it game back 2 years later. I, too understand what it's like going to the Mayon Clinic every 3 months for CT scans, blood tests, etc. Sincere thank you for letting all the other souses/partners know that how we feel is an "up & down" carnival ride!

Knew It. Watching her with her wink and a nod on Housewives, this is the woman I envisioned her to be. Tritely stated, I couldn't put it down.

Heart wrenching and warming. This book was fascinating, beautifully written, and ripped my insides out. 10/10 would recommend.

Writing at it's Best. Carole is a stunning writer. She writes as a journalist in a dry, calm manner - as if you were sailing on a summer yacht in perfect weather.Through this she somehow fluidly evokes profound emotion, pain, and the love story of herself and her husband; integrating the building and redefinition of friendship and family. It will touch anyone who has lived and loved - whether through illness or loss of any loved one. Relatable and forceful- all my love to Carole for living her life beautifully and gracing is with her story.

There's no promise for tomorrow. An absolutely haunting yet honest depiction of a woman of whom I have great admiration. Riveted by the medical stories as i am in healthcare myself. I turned the last page with the realization that life truly is too short. Be happy. Be true. And do it now.

Changed my life. Fantastic

Heartwarming. What a touching book....couldn't put it down.

Fortunate to find this boo. Thank you Carole, for lending a window into your dearest memories. I feel like I've laughed and cried with you. Absolute must read.

Incomparable. I am ever grateful to Carole for allowing me to experience her life, her loves and her heartbreaks. She helped me better understand my own feelings and similar experiences. Her writing is eloquent. She is, as her memoir is, incomparable. I'm also happy to note she has kept the tiger print couch - stunningly beautiful as she is. Thank you Carole.

Fabulous, heartfelt true tale. Couldn't put it down. Amazing writer. Gripping from the beginning to the end. a story of loss of a great friendship with (Carolyn Kennedy) and loss of a great love ( husband) . From the authors upbringing in Suffern NY to becoming the "unlikely " princessRaziwill. Charming, witty,& tearful. Can't wait to read her next book!

What a beautiful life... Words cannot express how this book has affected and inspired me. Carole has managed to write a book filled with such love, hope, humour, and dreams. Even knowing what tragedy does eventually befall her, you still manage to hold your breath, and pray that everything will be alright in the end. Getting to know John and Carolyn, through the eyes of Carole has been an honour and a privilege. I mourned their loss again, as I read the pages through my tears. But this time, was different. They were much more than their glossy photos on a tabloid magazine at the grocery store. John was loyal, he loved BIG, he laughed BIG, and he cried softly. Carolyn was true blue, she was confident, she was genuine, she was graceful, and she was fragile. And Anthony, her sweet prince... What remains must be all the love that she was given by these three incredible people, and the courage and strength to continue her beautiful life. Thank you Carole, for sharing your life with us, and your memories in a most honorable and dignified way. Christine Furlow Boston, MA

Outstanding. A touching and tragic story, beautifully told...

Touching. I really enjoyed this novel. A bit sad but very touching account of Princess Carole's life.

What Remains. This is a book I could not put down. I too come from Rockland County, Monsey to be exact and fell in love with Royalty and lost it all. My life has never been the same but after reading this book I know I'm not alone. Thank you Carole for a most wonderful read. Everyone should read this ...

What Remains. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I laughed as hard as I cried. Carole is a gifted writer that brings the reader into her moment. I stayed up all night until I was finished with her book. What a treat for the end of the day. My mom is dying and this book made me accept it. Thank you. Margie

Fabulously Written. I laughed, I cried and I was often amazed by how her choice of words worked together to create thoughtful, smart and captivating sentences. I loved her story and look forward to her next novels.

Great book. Loved it! You are a very strong woman Carole! I salute you.

Fantastic. This is the second time I read this book. I love Carole and her humor, wit, and willingness to open up. How wonderful to show someone the ultimate act of love . Out of need , comes a strength we never knew we had .

what remains. a terrific read. when I learned about Carole via real housewives and that she was friends with John-John and Carolyn, married to royalty, and yet was extremely down to earth, I couldn't wait to read this. her style is so personal, and the stories so touching and well- told, you almost feel as though you are sitting in her apartment, listening to her relate her life story over a pizza or coffee.

Stunning and wistful. Thank you Carole. I had the gift of knowing Carolyn for a brief moment in time. You captured everything. I have no idea how anyone can survive...not only losing two best friends, but also losing their husband in a three week timeframe. Carole's strength is amazing.

One of the best written books I have ever read.. Carol radziwell is one of the best writers of our time.

Fate vs Fortune. I am not mad or happy after reading this.

Amazing. An amazing story of love and friendship. Thank you.

True. This book took a tragedy so huge it could reck a person, and told the story of a woman who continued to live. It is not sugary and unbelievably inspiring, it is real. It's a true portrait of the Jumna experience during love and loss. Beautifully written, bravo Carole.

what Remains. Beautifully written! Radziwill's use of descriptive language is enticing and mesmerizing. She has a very unique way of tying together events scattered through decades.

What Remains. This book was one of the finest pieces I have ever read. Carole Radziwill's story is about life and love from someone incredibly brave, courageous, funny, loving, and REAL! Her ability to put her feelings to words are simply incredible. She is someone who is intuitive, fiercely bright, and has a gift. This is a must read.
