The Last Child by John Hart Book Summary

Winner of the 2010 Edgar Award for Best Novel

Heralded by the Washington Post as a "a magnificent creation, Huck Finn channeled through Lord of the Flies", John Hart's The Last Child is his most significant work to date, an intricate, powerful story of loss, hope, and courage in the face of evil.

Thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon had the perfect life: a warm home and loving parents; a twin sister, Alyssa, with whom he shared an irreplaceable bond. He knew nothing of loss, until the day Alyssa vanished from the side of a lonely street. Now, a year later, Johnny finds himself isolated and alone, failed by the people he'd been taught since birth to trust. No one else believes that Alyssa is still alive, but Johnny is certain that she is---confident in a way that he can never fully explain.

Determined to find his sister, Johnny risks everything to explore the dark side of his hometown. It is a desperate, terrifying search, but Johnny is not as alone as he might think. Detective Clyde Hunt has never stopped looking for Alyssa either, and he has a soft spot for Johnny. He watches over the boy and tries to keep him safe, but when Johnny uncovers a dangerous lead and vows to follow it, Hunt has no choice but to intervene.

Then a second child goes missing . . .

Undeterred by Hunt's threats or his mother's pleas, Johnny enlists the help of his last friend, and together they plunge into the wild, to a forgotten place with a history of violence that goes back more than a hundred years. There, they meet a giant of a man, an escaped convict on his own tragic quest. What they learn from him will shatter every notion Johnny had about the fate of his sister; it will lead them to another far place, to a truth that will test both boys to the limit.

Traveling the wilderness between innocence and hard wisdom, between hopelessness and faith, The Last Child leaves all categories behind and establishes John Hart as a writer of unique power.

Good tale. The Last Child is a very well written story filled with the unexpected. The style of writing is extremely descriptive. I found the plot complex and the flawed characters nicely fleshed out. I enjoyed the North Carolina setting. Two thumbs up from me.

The Last Child. A very compelling book. I could hardly put it down. I also live in NC and love the references to it. I have already sought out King of Lies as that will be my next book.

WONDERFUL READ.. I have to say this book is phenomenal. It really has many twists and turns throughout each chapter. The characters are captivating.. Lost track in the middle but it picked right back up quickly for me.. A great book for any reader.

Repetitive. I lost the count on just how many times did the author use the same words to describe the same features. I was so tired of his descriptions. It was a bore to read this book. The repetition took the entire charm away.

Bound by blood. One of the best I've read. I thought I had it figured out a couple of times, but it has twists and turns like the river in it. A must read for mystery lovers.

The Last Child. I could not put this book down! Surprising and shocking! Loved it!

The Last Child. This Book was absolutely fantastic! I couldn't put it down, finished it in 3days.

Work of art!. The characters in this book were so well developed all throughout the story. Special Book. This was my first John Hart novel, it will not be the last . Outstanding characters and a fast paced and believable storyline . Well worth the $$$ and time spent .

Haunting and lingering. This is an inspirational and amazing story. I read it and immediately reread it and I have only reread maybe 3books ever before! If I have to compare it I would use the green mile in the sense of its lasting effect on me. It is life's raw reality bestowed on a young boy and the journey through his strength, hope and it is a real vision how everything unfolds. This sticks with you! Absolutely incredible!

Keeps you guessing!. I just finished my first book by John Hart and I plan to read more. He is in my top 10 best author list! I couldn't put it down. Just when I think I figured out what happened the story twists again. Great job Mr. Hart! Can't wait to read another one of his books!

The Last Child--fantastic!. The Last Child is is one of the five best books I've ever read in my 67 years, in terms the beautifully descriptive writing style, the complex and totally engaging plot, and the character development. Absolutely loved it from the first page--and it just kept getting better!!!

Amazing. This will be classic in 21century first decade.

A good page turner.. Interesting, this was my first book of John Hart, and I would say he kept me with him. 👌👌👌

The Last Child. So well written; the words ring in your mind long after the last chapter ends, and the images linger. On to the next. I’d like these books to never end.

Wordy. Well written and good story, but could have told it in 20% less words

Amazing. Hart kept me seated on the edge of the page. The characters are real, and I felt what they felt. The book was unpredictable too. Whenever I thought that I had it figured out, there was another twist. This is Hart at his very best.
