Obama's Wars by Bob Woodward Book Summary

In Obama’s Wars, Bob Woodward provides the most intimate and sweeping portrait yet of the young president as commander in chief. Drawing on internal memos, classified documents, meeting notes and hundreds of hours of interviews with most of the key players, including the president, Woodward tells the inside story of Obama making the critical decisions on the Afghanistan War, the secret campaign in Pakistan and the worldwide fight against terrorism.

At the core of Obama’s Wars is the unsettled division between the civilian leadership in the White House and the United States military as the president is thwarted in his efforts to craft an exit plan for the Afghanistan War.

“So what’s my option?” the president asked his war cabinet, seeking alternatives to the Afghanistan commander’s request for 40,000 more troops in late 2009.  “You have essentially given me one option. ...It’s unacceptable.”

“Well,” Secretary of Defense Robert Gates finally said, “Mr. President, I think we owe you that option.”

It never came. An untamed Vice President Joe Biden pushes relentlessly to limit the military mission and avoid another Vietnam. The vice president frantically sent half a dozen handwritten memos by secure fax to Obama on the eve of the final troop decision.

President Obama’s ordering a surge of 30,000 troops and pledging to start withdrawing U.S. forces by July 2011 did not end the skirmishing.

General David Petraeus, the new Afghanistan commander, thinks time can be added to the clock if he shows progress.  “I don’t think you win this war,” Petraeus said privately.  “This is the kind of fight we’re in for the rest of our lives and probably our kids’ lives.”

Hovering over this debate is the possibility of another terrorist attack in the United States. The White House led a secret exercise showing how unprepared the government is if terrorists set off a nuclear bomb in an American city—which Obama told Woodward is at the top of the list of what he worries about all the time.

Verbatim quotes from secret debates and White House strategy sessions—and firsthand accounts of the thoughts and concerns of the president, his war council and his generals—reveal a government in conflict, often consumed with nasty infighting and fundamental disputes.

Woodward has discovered how the Obama White House really works, showing that even more tough decisions lie ahead for the cerebral and engaged president.

Obama’s Wars offers the reader a stunning, you-are-there account of the president, his White House aides, military leaders, diplomats and intelligence chiefs in this time of turmoil and danger.

Should be interesting.... I'm very interested to see behind Obama's curtain, I'll definitely be reading this if for no other reason than to see some of the excerpts from the washington post in full context...

Ignorance Ignorance. Critizing Obama is for the ignorants in America that understand nothing of what's going on in your own country. Start by getting educated instead of getting religious. Obama is not the Messiah, he doesn't perform miracles. The country was hit by lightening as he took office and given the circumstances he's doing a dam good job. Ofcourse he's getting the second term presidency.. Also, so you don't think I'm a Obama fanatic, you should know I believe the invasion of Iraque was necessary. Sadam won his bluff on WMDs, fooled us all but got his neck noosed. A lesson for the entire world. Don't underestimate what the U.S can do if you push it too far.

Obama's War. President Obama is revealed as a thoughtful and strong leader. No president has ever inherited more of a mess to deal with. The lack of strategy in place during the Bush administration is a tragedy. The military leaders should care a little more about the lost lives of those under their command and a little less about their careers and egos. What a keystone cop routine. I would have fired all of them.

Ignorant illiterate hillbillies. Insightful read. You shouldn't even be allowed to write a review unless you paid for the book thru the iBook store. Nobody wants to hear your ignorant tirade.

Obama is so cool!. He's the best president ever!

Where are the vacation pictures?. Obama has spent enough time on vacation! Where the hell are the pictures?

Husband in Armed Forces. I can tell you as a university graduate, with a husband in the U.S. Navy with the highest clearance obtainable, that this is an incredibly informative literary masterpiece. While my husband cannot, will not, and DOES NOT divulge any information whatsoever concerning what exactly he does, I can tell you that he was very pleased with the amount of detail the author provided as to "who-is-who" in the White House: cabinet positions, CIA leaders, what role they play in our conflicts with other countries, etc. To me, I interpreted that as validation that this book definitely gave insight to very important issues our President and Military Intelligence have been, and continue to deal with. I thoroughly enjoyed it, highlighted strong discussion points, and even used "notes" to comment on my previous knowledge of our state of affairs. That is how much this book commanded my attention. I implore those of you who have not read it to go ahead and preview it sans cost on iBooks. I also implore those of you non-readers to please actually read the book you're writing a review for; it's only logical, and you're still entitled to your opinion after you've read the book in its entirety.

Insightful and little receptive. The book is based on a very interesting and potentially the biggest security threats facing the whole world today emanates from the region. The book also reveals certain character traits about Obama. Unlike the tittle , it neither derogates or glorifies the president. It reveals that he is not a hasty decision maker, neither someone who can pressured or hustled into decision making. A man of strong character and foresight. Gives an insight about the war and the decision making process in the u.s administration, Weather you agree with obamas view is secondary but reveals a lot about considerations of a president. Must read but the only drawback is that ifs a little repetitive in terms of arguments and basic situation. seems like a bunch of military men bickering.

Obama's Wars. Excellent study of all the significant players prosecuting a very difficult war in modern times.

Solid Journalism. Woodward does a good job gathering views from the many different players in the Obama administration. He pits Obama's inexperienced quest for a unanimous way forward in Afghanistan against the hardened opinions of his military generals. I would hardly categorize this as a pro-Obama book. He appears handcuffed by his desire to create a considered, educated strategy to the point of being unable to act--- perhaps afraid to make poor decisions. In the end, the decisions the administration makes is an exercise in frustration-- because without a strategy that includes a Pakistani solution, a positive outcome in Afghanistan would seem unlikely. This realization comes as the war plows forward with small successes that likely won't amount to a military victory-- leaving the question -- if a win in Afghanistan is unattainable without a sustained 10-year American commitment to the region (politically unsustainable)-- exactly what are we fighting to achieve? On that count, the book is sobering. However Woodward's lynchpin is one single July 2010 interview with the President, in which Obama comes across- at times- as pointing his finger and making excuses. I don't feel like he got enough time with the president for this project. Somehow the book feels incomplete, and may have been best served to wait to include the administration's full review of the war due in December of 2010. This book is not an easy read. And the ridiculous and at times racist comments in the other reviews are not a fair representation-- or worthy of Woodward's impressive research.

I am reserving my judgement till I finish the book. after reading the first 140 pages one gets access to before purchasing the book: no new insights yet. Easy reading. A review in the wall street journal was Luke warm. So I am still deliberating whether to spend the $15 to purchase the e version,

Intensity of a spy novel. Meticulously researched and superbly written, the pace of the book accelerates enjoyably and can be quite a page-turner. Should be of interest to both democrats and republicans, and of absolutely no use to wingnuts, since basic literacy and an attention span will be required. Look elsewhere on the web for analysis and commentary--and then make up your own mind.

Idk... But what has he done that was good in this country except run it into the ground. That's about all he's accomplished and his Obama care that he passed that most people didn't even want. And a president that uses vulgar language when talking to other officials, yea that's real professional. Unemployment isn't even fixed yet they say it's improving cause they are fixing it with government jobs like construction well guess what when was construction ever permanent unless they're constructing and entire city soon they be out of work again. And yea good idea let's tax the rich let's make them pay cause the rich are only the ones that own the companies that give us our jobs we need we keep taxing them and taxing them, pretty soon they're gonna need to cut back by laying off workers. Man he's full of great ideas. The people wanted change and now were getting it. Oh well I have nothing against him or anyone just blown off some steam but I really think he just needs to go back to being the chairman of the party planning committee if he even has enough experience to run that.

No we can't. At the risk of being forever branded as the "R" word, I am simply over this man's rhetoric. It is obvious to me now that the practical policies of the last ten decades proved successful, while the theoretical policies of the current administration maintain a 9.6% unemployment rate. Bush was a complete verbal idiot, but at least he is credited with the fastest recovery from a recession in history. My once hero Obama, has left me clinging to my guns and my religion like the rest of the country.

It's a good thing "some" people are showing their teeth.. I had an opportunity to read (admittedly, i haven't completed) this book. So far, it seems clear and informative. I wasn't too much of a blind follower two years ago, and I don't believe to be one now. I'm confused why anyone could believe that any one president could completely decimate our country without the approval of those governed. I thought (and fortunately still believe) that we were made of sterner stuff. Did President Obama lie to the American people??? Was his thinking so myopic that he singlehandedly drive our economy into a recession in record time??? The little that I could extrapolate from the reading thus far was that the President repeatedly and erroneously expected others to do what was in the best interest of the country and not their political positions. I am an independent with some conservative positions. I will give it to the Republican Party. They have taken the concept of party over country to a new level. I don't expect to hold hands around a camp fire. However, I do hope that we could go back to a period of civility. I realized that things were going horribly wrong when a senseless boob screamed, "You, lie" during the State of the Union. Why the fear??? What's the purpose of such unbridled passion???

Haven't even read the book. Reviews of a book not read! Good job Apple! This is a poor reflection on Apple! Too bad America has come to this, a country divided is what we will always be!

Obama Wars. I rate this book Four and one half stars. This book gives much in site in to the U. S. President Obama's challenges and frustrations in day to day administration life when dealing with high profile government and military managers. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to study are government in action. I thought this was going to a negative Obama story, but it really turned admirable. I am glad I read it and thank the author and team for there detailed contribute.

The Great President Obama , Thank You, for your service. President Obama, was a sensible man and showed righteous for our country. He was level headed, kind when needed to be and strong with forcefulness, when called on. I watched the news more because I personally enjoyed to see him at his best, when he was direct with other leaders, that was amazing to me. Thank you President Obama, sincerely, thank you .

Stop offering your opinions. If you haven't even read the book!!

From Excerpts. This guy seems genuine in keeping his promises and is fighting some ugly battles with entrenched interests. Can't wait. Why does anyone want to be president?

Should be good!. Should be interesting to read. I think president Obama is trying really really hard to keep up with his promises.. He needs another term!!

Lobo. A great in-depth understanding of the man behind the title. The GOP has painted this man in every light except the light they would paint themselves in. This book will reveal the truth, beyond what any Fox news outlet can propagandize

Response to AmazedBeyondBelief. 8yrs of Bush is not the lone reason for this nations problems. I am an Obama supporter, and a realist. Bush was elected TWICE by the people of this nation. Remember that. We asked for him. TWICE. He was handed a raw deal. Americans always have to have someone to blame instead of focusing on making things better. Give me a break.

Liked the Pre-Reviews!. President Obama has not been successful by almost everyone's definition, but we should give him another term to keep trying? Wow, that's amazing logic! Sure, the whole country can wait for Obama's learning curve. Maybe these people should read the book first.

Response to KCano. George Bush was appointed by the Supreme Court in 2000 and there are doubts about his win being legitimate in 2004 (Ohio). You may have been dumb enough to vote for someone who couldn't pronounce the word 'nuclear' but the majority of America did not.

Riveting Read. Realize this is a review of the prose and not the president. Woodward remains one of the greatest of his generation. His unparalelled access and his ability to convey the details of high stakes international policy to the average American reader make Woodward a national treasure. The first 100 pages grab you and make you realize just what an undertaking being president really is, regardless from which side of the political aisle you spew your party's propoganda. This is a must read for Americans, not a battle ground for warring Democrats and Republicans.

Has anyone read the book?. I have not read the book. I read "reviews" to see if the book was worth reading. I dont think I read one complete review, just political vitriol. It aint the bible folks (not that that book hasnt stirred up any hatred) its just a dang book. I'm not a fan of either political party. Americans need to turn off the television, turn off the cell phones, get off the couch and go outside for a walk or better yet go READ a book!

Worst president ever......and you people are stupid.. The title says it all....oh and the idiot who says that all presidents are puppets unless they want to get shot like JFK is just that....an idiot. This country is getting worse every day. This author uses information and leaves other information out to paint the picture he wants you to see just like every other author and journalist no matter where their political views lie. So you people out there who want to care, stop letting other people tell you who's bad and who's good and figure it out for yourself.

Good. Good...

Usurper finally exposed. This book shows the real person behind the mask & his ideological thinking as he destroys America!

I Recommend "Obama's Wars". I am amazed by the one-star ratings for this book; not due to the quality of the book, but hatred of President Obama. By way of disclosure, I am a Vietnam Era four year Navy Vet, consider myself moderately conservative, and not a fan of President Obama's policies. I just finished Reading "Obama's Wars" by Bob Woodward. It was interesting, mainly about the infighting that goes on during and behind the White House strategy meetings. I was surprised at how far the Military is willing to go to try and circumvent the President --- not a "Seven Days in May" scenario, but surprising nonetheless. It makes me think that that perhaps we need a stronger, more credible, President that can slap down the Military --- when needed --- before we get more Vietnams.

Mount Rushmore. Never have you witnessed a president work this hard and put in so many hours. His total focus has orbited around what was best for the country, despite being hounded daily. At the end of his second term I will submit the bill to have his image carved in the side on that mountain.

Obama. This guy is going to go down as the worst president in US history. I can not wait to see what is in this book. People need to wake up before he destroys everything America stands for.

Wow. Thank You Bob Woodward for this Masterpiece. This is the perfect moment to raed this book

Ummm. Most of the low ratings here are from people who dislike the President not the book. Maybe if you morons took the time to read the book and not just repeat the rhetoric you hear on Fox News you can form an educated opinion. But I forget that ignorant rednecks that still use phrases like "coon" probably can't read. Morons. And for the record Obama has taken less vacation days than both Bush and Reagan since he's been in office so get a clue!

Respect. It is hopeless to reason with people who have already passed judgement on president Obama before he ever got into office. They are the racist's, who uses religion to satisfy their hatred, or the top 2% who can't have enough wealth thus lies and misleads others and uses their delusions so they continue on with their agenda. For the rest of us, this book is very informative and real.

Wow. I love how the first few reviews are nothing but political bs. Grow up people, learn to think for yourself and actually read the book before you make statements like "this will expose him for the failure he is" and "he's ruining this country." If anyone is responsible for ruining this country, it's News Corp., aka Fox News, for giving dumb people even more ridiculous things to say.

Wait. I love how no one has read the book, but already passing judgement. You know he's not the WORST... Mister WMD = over 4000 troops (Americans) perished behind that nonsense.

Wow! Worst president ever! Unreal. Bob did a great deal of due diligence uncovering this excuse of a man for president.

Inside look. This is a wonderful look at the inside relationship between the White House and the military. It shows a president who is clearly his own man, very much in control of a difficult situation. We are lucky to have this man in this place at this time.

Good!. Good

Are Americans really this ignorant?. Yup..

Obama's Wars. Boring....show's Obama complete lack of principles and lack of leadership

Are you kidding me?. Needs another term? You have got to be kidding or just clueless to what's happening.
