Packing for Mars by Mary Roach Book Summary

“America’s funniest science writer” (Washington Post) returns to explore the irresistibly strange universe of life without gravity in this New York Times bestseller.
Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? have sex? smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations. As Mary Roach discovers, it’s possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle training toilet to a crash test of NASA’s new space capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), Roach takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth.

No Tang!. Enjoyable read about the science, history, and evolution of accommodating the needs of the human body in space. The author has plumbed the annals of NASA and the space contracting community to bring insightful and sometimes funny accounts. Occasionally things get too clinical and slow, but still worth your money.

A great read!. This is one small book for man, one giant delight for mankind.

Accessible fun. Mary's book is informative while light-hearted and makes the extreme difficulties associated with manned spaceflight accessible to the layman. A must-read for anyone interested in long-duration spaceflight and definitely anyone who wonders why space travel is so expensive and dangerous.

Author! Author!. Fascinating, hilariously funny and wonderfully insightful, Packing for Mars is a rivetingly entertaining book I could not stop reading. I have three words: buy this book. Now. Mary Roach is wonderfully warped, a marvelously witty, funny storyteller. She peels away the glamour of space travel, and shows what a challenge it is, both for the heroic astronauts and for countless people on the ground who make it possible. And she does so in a way that is neither insulting nor condescending, but always entertaining. If I ever gave to travel deep into space, Mary Roach would be a great fellow astronaut. Packing for Mars is A-OK. That's a Roger. Out.

Wasn't my cup of tea. I skimmed and skipped the parts I found uninteresting or crass. The book wasn't so much for me, but maybe it will be for you.

Now I know the rest of the story. It isn't often that find a book that gives me a real feeling of "the way it really was" with a wonderful touch of humor that will spark a uncontrollable laugh. While reading this on my last flight, my sporadic chuckle was enough to spur everyone's curiosity to what I was reading (probably wondering if I'm nuts or just comparing NASA food with airline food). Hummmm Thanks for a great book.

Great read!. Even if you're not into space flight, you'll get a kick out of the information revealed in this book. Its funny and well-written!

Failure to Launch. I was really looking forward to reading this one as a big advocate for humanity moving forward with expanded space exploration. This book was not worth the wait. Although it was a quick and sometimes entertaining read it failed to hit the target you would expect from the title. Mary Roach attempted to create a book that provides fascinating insights on what considerations make humans fit and unfit for space exploration. The flow, however, is stilted in many areas. She inserts a lot of cheeky writing that aims to be clever but is often just cheesy. Additionally, she went a mile wide on topics and therefore some topics get cut off too early while others ran on too long. To her credit the citations and research is exhaustive. So you can bank on the accuracy of what topics you do learn about. It felt like a rushed attempt at the end to pull it all together with a call to dream big. For each topic Mary Roach identifies lots of problems but offers no firm draft of what a comprehensive plan would look like today. Part of that short coming could be due to the time period in which was written and also security restrictions. In the end, the whole book could have been reduced down to a long form article in Nature or Scientific American. It may actually work better as a short documentary on Nature or NASA’s own channel. Cosmos by Carl Sagan is a more accurate read on mankind’s future in space exploration.

An out of this world read. I saw the author on The Daily Show and sought out the book. I found her telling of the history of space travel to be quite engaging and appreciated her sense of humor. The book seems well researched and the various anecdotes of the individuals she encounters send the reader through the gamut of emotion as their successes, failures, fears, and losses are laid bare on the page... Er iPad.

Awesome book. I am a huge fan of this author, and I am certainly not disappointed with this! This book is humorous, well-researched, and a wonderful read.

Packing For Mars - what a hoot!. Always informative, highly readable, completely comprehensible - high school class books should be written in this style - and occasionally (well, often) belly-laugh funny. I grew up during the Space Race - I have drunk Tang while imagining myself on an EVA, eaten Space Food sticks - so my memories of that era probably enhanced the enjoyment, but even those of a (*ahem*) more recent vintage will find this material very approachable.

Fun and Informative. Very good assessment of the buts and bits aspects of space travel. Funny and informative at the same time. Highly recommend it for the space enthusiast.

Informative and Fun. I really enjoyed this book, and learned interesting facts about space agencies and people who fly into space and at what costs. Good read.

Meeep, science. This was a great read! Packing for Mars has explained many a fact that years of science classes never touched. I felt both entertained and enlightened which rarely happen together in a book. I recommend it highly, even if I prefer staying planted on Earth!

An Interesting Lunchtime Read.... I have an interest in space, that is large as... well, space; as such the subject of this book was very appealing to me. If you feel the same then this will not disappoint. In addition, the book will probably gross you out. That said, it all is amusingly written and beyond fascinating. As mentioned before, I read it all during my lunch breaks and it was quite an experience considering how obsessed NASA is with things inside you and how things get in and out of you. This book is well researched and well written with a easy-going style that makes it an easy read. Maybe I will take back the space aficionado and say that anyone would dig this book.

Very interesting indeed!. This book covers a huge amount I wanted to know.

Good bad and ugly of nasa. Great book, well written; however it seems a little short for the price.

Fun and fascinating. Full of interesting tidbits, it's a great glimpse in to the human side of space that nobody talks about. The little kid inside of me now has answers to a lot of questions.

The Raw Underbelly of Living in Space. Hilarious Mary Roach goes where no "man" has gone before (well few investigative reporters at least). With eloquent humor she investigates the "ins" and "outs" of eating in space, life without bathing, "space sickness", and all of the the other things seldom discussed by the NASA PR machine. A good read for space enthusiasts and space history buffs. This book should be required reading for wannabe "space tourists".

Fascinating and tremendously funny.. A great read! (Albeit one that features the phrase 'cooking the skin flakes'.)

Wonderful book. Almost done with all of mary's books.. Will be sad when that happens.
