The Tea Rose Book Summary

The Tea Rose is a towering old-fashioned story, imbued with a modern sensibility, of a family's destruction, of murder and revenge, of love lost and won again, and of one determined woman's quest to survive and triumph.

East London, 1888-a city apart. A place of shadow and light where thieves, whores, and dreamers mingle, where children play in the cobbled streets by day and a killer stalks at night, where bright hopes meet the darkest truths.

Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, a bright and defiant young woman dares to dream of a life beyond tumbledown wharves, gaslit alleys, and the grim and crumbling dwellings of the poor.

Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger's son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save, and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.

But Fiona's dreams are shattered when the actions of a dark and brutal man take from her nearly everything-and everyone-she holds dear. Fearing her own death at the dark man's hands, she is forced to flee London for New York. There, her indomitable spirit-and the ghosts of her past-propel her rise from a modest west side shopfront to the top of Manhattan's tea trade.

Authentic and moving, Jennifer Donnelly's The Tea Rose is an unforgettable novel.

The Tea Rose - Jennifer Donnelly Book Reviews

  • Just be ready to never put this book down! (gglace)

This is my third time reading this book and my second time reading the entire series. I just love Donnelly's writing style. She completely captivates you and truly makes you feel the emotions she is portraying in her characters. At times the story may seem a bit far fetched but yet it also makes the story all the more captivating and invests you all the more in the book and the characters. Every time I sit down with this book..or any of her books (I loved every one I have read) I'm stuck in it until the end.
  • Favorite series (pup2132)

Love history entertained with characters that draw you in flaws and all!
  • My favorite! (Mricgk157)

This is my absolute favorite book, along with "The Winter Rose" and "The Wild Rose". You can't help but to fall in love with these characters. You will LOVE these books!
  • Soppy love story set on historic backdrop (EmilyGilmour)

While the historical background is well researched and depicted, the story itself is far fetched in long stretches and then just hokey lovey dovey in some scenes. It is a nice read if you are looking for just that - don't expect anything like Michener.
  • A book to get lost in!! (Mac-Chick)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the historical aspect. The characters are well-developed and likable. The main character has strength and character. The book had it's wonderful moments and sadness. It's amazing to read how hard times were back then. The ending was a bit expected, but otherwise, I really enjoyed the book and got lost in the story.
  • Possibly the BEST BOOK! (Cyntabug)

I thoroughly loved and enjoyed this book...could not put it down! I'm parcel to historical fiction and the author makes you sense and feel the environment/setting and more importantly...you feel like you know the characters. There was a super balance of suspense, struggle, joy and romance! Yet the feeling of sadness and grief was at times too much and overwhelming...for that I was thankful it was a fictional read. Jennifer Donnelly certainly did her research and nailed it as an author - an eloquent author - please keep writing! I so look forward to her next two books in this trilogy. Although I must take a break from reading to get things done in real life and will look forward to the reward of reading the Winter Rose!
  • Couldn't put it down (Sunylissa)

I've read all of Jennifer Donnelly's books except 'Revolution'. The Rose series is awesome!! 'The Wild Rose' was a little more predictable than the first two but you just can't put it down! I was dying to find out what happens to Willa and Seamie! Great book! I want more!
  • Great read!!! (Oside mommy)

Have to say that it took me a bit to get into it. However once I did it was an amazing story. Absolutely loved it. Well worth investing the time in reading!!!
  • Favorite for a lifetime (KatieLady52843)

    Love love love this book!
