Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher Book Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Rosamunde Pilcher, Winter Solstice (the basis for the TV movie) is the story of five unforgettable characters, lonely and haunted strangers who find love and loyalty as a reborn family of friends during the Christmas holidays.

Elfrida Phipps, once of London’s stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life—shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name—still she finds herself lonely.

Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile.

Carrie returns from Austria at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and sister sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her sister's awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America.

Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house.

It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan.

Lovely. Very heartwarming, hopeful book.

Winter Soltice. So wonderful!! Please add more of Mrs. Pilcher's work to the English language book selections.

So many errors in this format.. Disappointing to see such glaring errors, such "Financial limes" instead of "Times". I would have promptly returned my copy to the bookstore if it had contained these mistakes and would do the same with this version if I could only figure out how to do such a thing. So, this will be my only purchase from iBooks. Plus, with my other ePub books I can share the book on my other devices. The iBook version is protected. A shame in so many ways... But Pilcher is still a favorite author.

I adore this book!!. I absolutely loved this story. Heartwarming and lovely. I did not want it to end. Rosamunde develops her characters so well that I found myself emotionally attached to each of them and the lovely landscapes, and home life, which she describes with such feeling…..the book is just wonderful! Perfect Winter read. I plan to reread it when December arrives ❤️

Winter Solstice. Definitely a "feel good" read without being sappy or unbelievable. Pilcher at her best! I am always drawn fully into the lives she depicts with such skillful word-strokes.

Glad I only tried the sample. This book is so boring and saccharine sweet. 40:pages was more than enough.

Winter Solstice. A very engaging story that made me feel at one with each of the characters. I was so pleasantly surprised to discover this style of writing. Descriptive, warm, it made me happy to comeback to each night. Great characters and insight with a feeling of properness.

Captivating. I enjoyed this story from the first page. i like the way the characters are woven together and how the story unfolds with each new introduction. It was a nice getaway to imagine how lovely Scotland is in the winter and it left me feeling uplifted.

Charming. Heartwarming and magical. I am sorry to see it end. I wish for another installment in the lives of these charming characters. Do Carrie and Sam really get together? Does he buy the estate house? What about Rory and his trip to Napa? Does he marry Lucy? So many lose ends just perfect for another story and more adventures!

Delightful!. Delightful characters and simple yet magical and a picturesque storyline. Pilcher always makes you feel like you’re part of the family. Such a talent. This would be a great read during the holidays.

And now let me read another. Great reading only 3 months until I go on holiday.

Gem of a Read. Like a trip abroad to a lovely wintry landscape by the sea warmed by its extraordinary characters. Anita

One of the cheesiest books ever. The story line of the book is quite predictable. The dialogues are artificial, and constantly repeat themselves. The characters are quite fake in nature. Elfrida is a woman with a questionable reputation who "attacked" a newly widowed man in order to settle down. Oscar is a quite weak man , and it's very disappointing he proposed to marry another woman only after two months his wife passed away. Lucy is a difficult teenager who needs a good upbringing and parents must pay attention to her needs and not allow her to do whatever she wants. Carry is another woman with questionable reputation who tried to ruin a family of married man. Sam is so nice and sweet. He is a "true angel". There is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with him. Sooooo boring! I really regret I spent my money and time on this book!

Like comfort food. Loved the nature descriptions, and all the good food they’re always cooking and eating. Reading this book was like slipping into a warm bath after a brisk walk across romantic moors.

Wonderful story. I have been a Rosamunde Pilcher fan for years......this book did not disappoint. Beautifully written, great characters....I must visit Scotland one day :)

Winter Solstice. The kind of story you don't want to end. Well developed characters, ordinary & relatable. No gimmicks-I found myself lost. I had a bit of a problem with a term used in the final pages but I am a big girl, who now allows for understanding where others are coming from.
