Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis Book Summary

Michael Lewis’s instant classic may be “the most influential book on sports ever written” (People), but “you need know absolutely nothing about baseball to appreciate the wit, snap, economy and incisiveness of [Lewis’s] thoughts about it” (Janet Maslin, New York Times).

One of GQ's 50 Best Books of Literary Journalism of the 21st Century

Just before the 2002 season opens, the Oakland Athletics must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players and is written off by just about everyone—but then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins. How did one of the poorest teams in baseball win so many games?

In a quest to discover the answer, Michael Lewis delivers not only “the single most influential baseball book ever” (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what “may be the best book ever written on business” (Weekly Standard). Lewis first looks to all the logical places—the front offices of major league teams, the coaches, the minds of brilliant players—but discovers the real jackpot is a cache of numbers?numbers!?collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers, and physics professors.

What these numbers prove is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information had been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland Athletics. He paid attention to those numbers?with the second-lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to?to conduct an astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted.

In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win . . . how can we not cheer for David?

The quants are coming !. Quants infiltrate the old boys network of baseball and change the way the game is managed. This book is a great read.

Great !. Best baseball book of all time

This theory changed baseball for good.. Really saw how baseball has changed. My Dodgers NEVER bunt now. And they love to “be patient at the plate,” meaning they love those walks.

Fantastic!!!!. …and so begins my own walk into the data in baseball. Thank you Michael!

Moneyball. Awesome read!!! Makes me fall in love with baseball all over again.

One of my favorite reads ever.. Gave a great prospective on how sabermetrics are being looked at by ball clubs in baseball. Must read for any true fan of baseball.

Great book!. Haven't read many books over the years .... This one was worth it!

Rude Acknowledgements. In this book, the author criticizes my friend, Ms. Dani Mabry's father, John calling him a so called "bench player". This statement is false for he is an exuberant example of a ball player. Shame on the author for his use of wording.

Moneyball. This book is brilliant! I couldn't put it down, it was so fascinating and inspiring!

Wow!. Fantastic book! Must read for any sports fan!

Money ball. A great baseball book. I can't wait to see the movie.

Brilliant!. Moneyball is one of the most compelling stories in modern sports. The Oakland A's with their meager payroll represent a true David vs. Goliath tale. Michael Lewis exposes the backstories and heartbreaks of the team dubbed most appropriately as the "island of misfit toys." A reader cannot help but genuinely care about the subjects of this book and root for their continued success. Critics of Billy Beane and saber metrics management only serve to make themselves look foolish. Read this book today. You won't regret it.

Great book. Definitely worth the read. Buy it and don't look back

Money ball. I've read it twice. Extremely humorous and entertaining. Very thought provoking not only about baseball but about how it is possible to rethink concepts and views that have long been deemed to be definitive and valid beyond question. Highly recommended.

Money Ball. Money Ball reignited my interest in baseball after gradually falling away from the game the last 55 years. Now if they will just move the fences back 40 feet so like in Ty Cobb's day the home run king scores less than 10 round-trippers!

One of the greatest,. Baseball books of all time. It is enjoyable to read from cover to cover and tells a great story. Some of the story may be lose if one does not recognize the names it brings up throughout the book but the ones that are important to the story are always developed and portrayed beautifully.

Moneyball hit it out of the park!. This book opened my eyes to a whole new outlook in baseball. Great reading for this person who considered himself a traditionalist. But now have a very different view on about the sport and the people in and around it.....

Funeme. Terrific book! Ten years after its publication, the ideas that were so controversial then are still being debated now. I will use the book as a reference as this year's playoffs are played.
