Read this classic today. Donā€™t fall for the catchy title of ā€œThe Adventures of Sherlock Holmesā€ - meet Sherlock for the first time here with this fascinating mystery of murder, love, and Mormonism. Easy read. Entertaining story. Interesting layout of events. Highly recommended!

Thought I was reading Sherlock Holmes. Excellent first half of the book, and easy enough to read (: Second half was about Mormons so I skipped that. Those two stories should be separated though since I wasted 15 minutes reading and being confused by part two.

Book of Morman. 2nd part is a story about the Mormons. Not by Doyle

Thriller!. A Study in Scarlet is a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery in that Watson and the reader are left in awe of the great detective but then later commenting privately "why of course! Why didn't I think of that!" These well-loved mysteries never get old and never go out of style! Simply brilliant!

A must read. It was really interesting to be inside the mind of Sherlock Holmes and watch as Watson and him got closer. I loved following along with the case and learning about the art of deduction.

A Study in Scarlet. Its amazing i very much recommend it to everyone its truly amazing

GREAT. Great, consider it was written in 1887. It is so much better than many newer books.

A Study in Sherlock. My mom is a lover of anything Sherlock, but had never read the books. I decided to give them a try and am delighted that I have taken such a liking to them. I canā€™t wait to read the next book and recommend this one to my friends. Yes, part II starts a little strangely but I quickly fell in love with the story and was satisfied with how the mystery all connected. Donā€™t lose hope, stick with the story and Iā€™m sure youā€™ll find yourself happy you read it through.

The Morman book is mixed in this book!. The first stories are of Arthur Conan Doyle but then the rest are from The Mormen Book.

Great book. First Sherlock Holmes book I have read. It had me hooked from beginning to end. Deffinitely reccommend reading it.

Ā”Ā”Ā”Ā”Spoilers!!!!. I was not expecting the section on Mormons. Other than that, well written.

A Study in Scarlet. Exceptional. My first Doyle but not my last!

A Study in Scarlet. One of the most interesting books I've read!

Cool book. Even for 20201.

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Excellent read for mystery lovers. Great endings.

Brilliant!!. This is my first crack at a Holmes novel, and it was excellent!!!

A Study in Scarlet. I am positive I had previously read all of the Holmes stories; however, I was glad to reconnect with the duo at their beginning. The chance circumstances that threw them together, I had forgotten. I had also forgotten the Mormon component of the story. When Doyle wrote this it was not too long removed a time from the Mormon trek, and stories of the development of the settlement in Utah must have been of interest. Indeed, even at this further removed time (2014), similar stories, like that of Warren Jeffs, for example, are of interest and are circulated. I don't feel that Doyle had quite hit his stride with Holmes yet. This story seems to have more backstory than do many later ones. After all, Holmes is the one we want to read about. A "Gripping Yarn" none the less. Joseph Herbert

Delightful with interesting Mormonism commentary. This was a wonderful reintroduction to Sherlock Holmes. I read the Hound of the Baskervilles in high school and recently reread it with my 11 year old daughter. I had however, never read " A Study in Scarlet" until now. In reading this book I was delighted to get the backstory of how Holmes and Watson met and some of their early history. But what was an added bonus was to get Conan Doyle's still relevant opinion of early Mormonism and the then unpopular war in Afghanistan. The latter of course dealing with the British who fought there long before us. Both subjects were discussed in such a way that they could have been written by an author today and would not seem out of place with contemporary events. In particular as far as the Mormon connection I am thinking of John Krakauer's book "Under the Banner of Heaven" . I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock holmes. I read this book and I actually wanted to keep going back to reading it I love this series.

Glad there is a dictionary feature.... I am a kid who has to read this for school. I am in love with the dictionary feature on iBooks, because I would not understand this book otherwise. Don't get me wrong, it is an awesome book, but hard for a kid to read.

Excellent!. I loved this book from cover to cover. Great story! Can't wait to read the rest of the Sherlock Holmes series.

Great book. At first part two didn't seem connected very much to any sort of Sherlock Holmes story, but it ties in later, and ties in quite well.

A Study in Defamation. This is where Sherlock Holmes started? What possessed this otherwise brilliant writer to have written this smut, God only knows. SPOILER ALERT Arthur Conan Doyle collected the vilest lies against the ā€œMormonsā€ (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and twisted them into a grotesque macabre scene of murderous conspiracy in which he slanders (viciously) actual people. This libel is all the more outrageous considering who his target is. The contrast to reality is mind-numbing. About the only thing he got right is the fact that they practiced polygamy (for about 40 years.) The manner and methods he outlined are, however, dangerously misinforming. Based on the current review rating of this book (4.5), itā€™s evident that most readers are either ignorant of the facts, or they just arenā€™t that bothered by religious bigotry. Having read Hound of the Baskervilles and Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, ACD vastly improved his writing style in his later books. My recommendation is to read the first chapter or two for the interesting backstory provided on Watson and Holmes. Thereafter, it devolves into A Study in Defamation and should be left to the trash heap of history.

Incredible read. This book offers an amazing view into Holmes' thought process and the beginning of his relationship with Watson. Must read for any Sherlock Holmes fan.

A Great Read!. If you enjoy a good mystery and a pleasant jaunt into history, Sherlock Holmes is just the ticket! A Study In Scarlet is such a wonderful story, I have read it many times over the years, and have never been disappointed.

A lesson in writing. This is a great book. For the very first time, I have been thrilled to read a book that has been in it's way a strange way of writing.

Reader. Good story, but boy was he off concerning the Mormons. Couldn't possibly have been more off!

Great story. One of my favorites.

Good, but has some flaws.. There are some flaws with this book, but Iā€™ll only touch on one here. I feel that Part 2 shouldnā€™t have been in the book. It seems that itā€™s just there to make the book longer. The reason I say that is because, Hope explains what happened in Part 2 in the final chapters and states why he had done what he did. (Pardon me for being so general, but I donā€™t want to spoil the book for any new readers.)

An amazing book. A remarkable start to the well-known series of adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

An amazing read. It was really exciting to follow along with the investigation, and to be in the mind of Sherlock Holmes. Watching a show or movie just isnt the same as the books. Although some words i didnt understand, i would definitly read this book again.

A Study In Scarlet Review. A Study In Scarlet, is a Mystery Thriller by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and is the first of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It's about Dr. John Watson, a medical officer, working in the second Afghanistan war. After an injury, Watson has to leave the war, and goes to London. When he gets to London, he meets up with an old friend named Stamford who introduces Watson with Sherlock Holmes in a laboratory after Watson tells Stamford that he is looking for a new place to live, and Stamford saying that Holmes needs a roommate. The two then start living together, and it is quite pleasant for the two. After Holmes tells Watson about the Science of Deduction, that he is a "consulting" detective, and that there hasn't been a good case lately, a case from Gregson (a detective from the Scotland Yard) about a murder comes by the two. When Holmes and Watson get to the crime scene, see a deadman who hasn't been robbed, footprints in the yard, cab prints and the word RACHE(which is German for revenge). Also, a woman's ring fall off the body when the body is lifted. The body you find out is a man named Enoch Drebber. Drebber was a person who was from Cleveland, Ohio and had a secretary by the name of Joseph Stangerson. Days after these events, Waston watches Holmes putting the pieces of the mystery together. Holmes also told Watson that by using the science of deduction, he found the age, height and complexion of the murderer. But later, Lestrade (another detective from Scotland Yard) tells Holmes and Watson that Joseph Stangerson has been killed, but by a different way than Drebber. Now, if I tell you any more of this story, I would be spoiling a lot. The first Sherlock Holmes novel, (to me at least) is a very entertaining read. The mystery itself is very intriguing and pulls you in from the start. The scene where Watson and Sherlock talk to each other about the science of deduction is memorable. And it does give us a good view of what is to come in the later books. But, even though is great and entertaining, it's not without its flaws. While Watson's character is explored this novel, none of the other recurring character's personality is delved into. If you just read this, you would probably think Sherlock is just a really smart and energetic person, or you wouldn't know how Gregson and Lestrade would react to something Sherlock says. Also, starting in the last chapter of Part 1, the writing can be weak, and kinda weird. The murderer of Drebber and Stangerson just comes of no where. And when I say "comes out of no where", I really mean it, because the killer isn't referenced or mentioned at all before Sherlock figures out who the killer is. But, the real problem, that many people critique, including I, is that (SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle doesn't depict Mormons in a good or even realistic way, and that most of Part 2 catches you off guard( not in a good way). Most of Part 2 is about the events leading up to the murder. Now, that is fine, in fact, if most murder mysteries talked about the events leading up to the murder or crime, then I would be pleased. But when the backstory is about badly depicted Mormons, completely unrelated details and the story of a Western film, in a Sherlock Holmes story, well, it's okay, I guess. But when it's a little less than half the text in the story, it kinda makes the book seem like two novels stuck together and a forced ending in one of the two stories to connect the two together. But, even though the killer is a Deus X Machina, and Mormons are depicted horribly, I would still give this book a read, and in my personal opinion, fondly enjoyed. When I read this, it gives me pleasure, and while the ending is a Deus X Machina, the actual mystery is pretty legit and very interesting. And, it must of been good seeing how it spawned a new major franchise that, nowadays, appears in books, movies, T.V. and more! Overall, I would say go check it out. In fact, check this and other Sherlock Holmes stories. It's a very entertaining and interesting read, but try to skip, the parts about the American West and Mormons.

Study in Scarlet. Masterfully done. Sherlock Holmes is as brilliant today as when he was first written.

Page Issues. Good story but the words are all to one side. Is anyone having this issue? Please let me know if you know how to fix it. šŸ˜

Holmes meets Watson. The first meeting of these two amazing men begins the most amazing famous duos.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I have read several Sherlock Holmes books and this has been the best. I highly recommend this book.

Good reading. If you are new to Sherlock Holmes then start with this book. It is the first and introduces Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes. It gives the background of Dr Watson and how he met Sherlock etc. Also the crime mystery was great too. I highly recommend this book. The price is right too!!!

Great read. The beginning of the Sherlock Holmes series.

It not that bad. In the begging it was very good in the middle it lags then in the end it all make sƩance . I'll give it 3out of 5

A Study in Scarlet- excellent read!. The first appearance of Sherlock Holmes cannot be missed by anyone who enjoys the writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. An introduction to the man and his methods, the first tale featuring Holmes is an intriguing mystery from first to last. The story is of course told in the voice of Doctor Watson, and the reader is enlightened to his history and introduction to Holmes. Short and fast-paced, truly a must-read!

Study in Scarlet. Great read!

āœ”ļø. Good read

Sherlock Holmes. This is a very entertaining book! I was extremely confused when Doyle started the 2nd part. I finally came to understand the storyline when he brought up Drebber's name. All in all, a very excellent book!

A Study in Scarlet. The first time I have delved into a Sherlock Holmes book. Interesting & not what I expected. I must say that if this is the way all Sherlock Holmes books are, I will not read very many. The movies they have made are much more detailed, maybe flamboyant is a better word. I plan on trying at least one more before I leave Holmes to the shelves.

The Old and New. Taking an interest of Sherlock Holmes as a kid I always loved the series that aired early Saturday morning but with the new movies released I believe the directors have found the correct way of portraying Mr. Holmes along with these books I can only want more

Read this first. This story lays out all the background. I loved it.

A classic (obviously). The beginning of the tales of Sherlock Holmes but open a door in the depths of the tales which await.

Perfect Classic. Loved it!

Awesome!!. An outstanding piece of literature. I normally h8 reading but I saw the movie and I'm glad I read it

Enjoyable Read. Its the very first appearance of Sherlock Holmes, its nicely laid out/presented, its just under 200 pages so a nice quick read and best of all its FREE so I recommend it.

Brilliant. Entertaining, ingenious, full of wit and laughter. A fantastic story and introduction to the mind and mannerisms of Sherlock Holmes. A beautiful piece of literature. Bravo Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A Study In Scarlet. An excellently written piece of literature, as you would expect from Conan-Doyle. A fantastic story and the way it's written so you understand all the characters is fantastic.

Fantastic. First time reading a Sherlock Holmes book having seen numerous films etc. A great read and very entertaining. Will be enjoying more Sherlock very soon.

Love it. I absolutely love this book because I figured out Arthur Conan Doyle's a relative of mine! Plus detectives are epic so it's a win win

Awesome. Brilliant, fantastic, awesome! Need I say more?

Absolutely brilliant. I was trying to read many of the books but could not find it interesting. Since watching the TV series Sherlock. Photo by reading the original book. Phone the books more interesting than the TV series. Will recommend it to everyone to read it.

A great book. If you're not really much of a reader, you won't find the length of this book daunting, and hopefully the brilliant writing of Sir Doyle in this first Sherlock Holmes novel will grab your attention within a few pages, and you'll be loving every minute of it! 5*

Simple. Easy to read. I found this book a joy. Its so well written that the story just flows straight out of the pages and into your head. No unnecessary details to clutter it up just a simple tale. A must read!

One of the best books i've ever read!!!!. Without exagiration: One of the best books i've ever read!!!!

A study in Scarlet. It was pretty good

Thrilling. Enticed as I was by the reputation of Sherlock Holmes, I decided to download this book at once, seeing as it was free. Normally free things are not that good, in this situation it is quite the opposite. The way that it completely revealed the whole mystery, down to the complete detail of the murdered, and the murderers history, is absolutely stunning. I love it, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Best Detective/Mystery Read. For long I was attracted by the reputation of Sherlock Holmes. I still remember a few years ago, when I read the translated version of it China. It absolutely fascinated me. After watching the TV show Sherlock, my attention was once again drawn on the book. Itā€™s been a while since I last read it and I realized how much the TV show deviated from the original book. I believe that Sherlock Holmes, with itā€™s exciting plots and expected scenes really shaped the definition of mystery and detective book forever. I sincerely recommend this book to all that enjoy this genre. Oh and itā€™s free Big thumbs up on that Apple

Four stars!!. I absolutely love sir Conan Doyle's original books and I won't reed the other ones that are adaptions because they don't portray Sherlock as the secluded, cocaine fueled, boheimian man he was! This book struck many emotions in me and I loved it! It was the only book of mr. Conan Doyle's I had never read and it proved to be very much worth it! The only part that irked me a little was when lastrede & gregson got all the credit like the greedy pigs they were! But all in all it was an amazing book really worth reading!:D

A Study in Scarlet. Interesting the way it was written, taking you back into the past on the second part of the book. How Holmes described his success settles any curiosity. Good mystery writing.
