The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson Book Summary

An Apple Books Classic edition.

What would happen if you let your darkness out? Are you certain you’d be able to rein it back in? When Dr. Jekyll turned toward the dark side, he was convinced he could turn back at will, while his friends assumed he’d fallen under the influence of the criminal Mr. Hyde. But the good doctor—and all his acquaintances—were very, very wrong. Can Dr. Jekyll escape the clutches of Mr. Hyde before it’s too late?

Set in the London society of the 1880s, Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella is a masterful tale of suspense and psychological intrigue. The story plays to primal fears like losing control of ourselves and discovering that a person we trusted is actually someone—or something—else entirely: a monster. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a must-read for anyone who loves mysteries and crime fiction.

A Wonderful Read. As a young adult this book was quite a fascinating read. The issues brought up by this book are very much still relevant to today and its issues. The book even making its way into the English language as well. The only real problem that I had reading was the advanced vocabulary and grammar. Beyond that it was a smooth read that gripped me until the end. I don’t usually write reviews for books; however I had to for this one. Would recommend to anyone vaguely interested in this tale!

My thoughts. This book is good. It is terrifying and brilliant masterpiece of a story. So can somebody have the balls, to take this entire book and make the first movie to go, completely, by the book? This is possibly one of the greatest books to that with and if they do do that, I’m going to be one of the first people in the theater where it’s playing. But still, good book.

Jekyll. Thank you that was fun

Remarkable. Incredible story, written beautifully. Deep and provocative, it examines man's internal struggle between the restraint of good and the freedom of evil. Jekyll's inability to give up the allure of Hyde, even when he knows he should, is at the heart of every addiction. This should be required reading.

Good book. This book made me happy. I kept though my house was burning. Thank god I have insurance.

Death is the only salvation. This book is worth the read. The last 10 pages are the best part.

Bad. This book is not good

jikuo. it smelled good

A Gothic Masterpiece. As with Shelley's Frankenstein, there's nothing like the original. Too bad, as with Frankenstein, that so many terrible imitations spewed forth among us since.

A nuanced view into humanity. An important view into the duality of mankind. The short nature of each "chapter" and the brevity of the entire work make it a convenient read.

I thought I knew the story. I've seen pretty near all the Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde movies made. I thought I knew the story pretty well. Hollywood really does a good rewrite of Stevenson's novella. Reading this story gave me quite an insight into why this story has captured the imagination of the public for so long. I tried to imagine what it was like to read this story for the first time. It is wonderfully suspenseful. Told from the view of Jekyll's friends and acquaintances before we read Jeykell's own description of what happened in his laboratory, it captures the imagination. This is a good read.

Amazingly thought-provoking.. This is a real page-turner. I could’ve easily finished in hours but was so pleased & intrigued that I forced myself to savor it over a few days. In addition to its eloquent scripting, this work is full of mysterious parables that force you to ponder the makings of man, goodness, and evil. Those who don’t enjoy it seem to lack the comprehensive ability to interpret its brilliance.

No. This book is boring, hard to understand, and drags on and on. Do not waste your time.

Not for me. Maybe great in its time, but not great for me as I like whodunnits.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Beautifully written. There’s a reason why this Novel has continued to enthrall readers.

Fantastic. You can feel every emotion Jekyll has in this book. This book was an incredible adventure and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would recommend this book to anybody that has the ability to read the old language well.

Good read. I've read some reviews that say the book is confusing. This is not so. There's a reason the book is a classic. This short book should be read.

Different from the Adaptations. Once I got past the language used to tell the story I found myself engrossed in it. I was surprised by how much it differed from the movie adaptations I’ve seen and yet most of the story is the same. It has been streamlined for the silver screen. Although it’s often seen as horror or science fiction the philosophical theme of duality is made more explicit in the book than movies.

Good read. I personally like how the story is told from different perspectives if each characters and then finally from the main character. The language and dialogue is intriguing but does get old fast. Worth the time overall

swag. love dis book fr

Classic. Still relatable today

Great. I had forgotten this story, glad I re-read it.

Thoughtfull. SPOLIER ALERT As i read the coffesion i thought would i or wouldnt i

Extremely good well written classic. I throughly enjoyed every bit of this book. As you would expect a book of this age the vocabulary was very ancient, however it added a richness to the overall aesthetic of the novel. It was a classic that had been held up through time.

Good book. Slow start, but worth reading!

A Cautionary Tale. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was a memory from childhood for me. In eighth grade, (1966) Sister Philomena of the Immaculate Heart nuns read this book to the entire class. As eighth graders we were above being read to! But the strength of Stevenson's narrative, and the superior inflection of Mother Superior Philomena kept us enthralled. Stevenson' brief novel is a masterpiece of suspense, and a desperate story of drug abuse from a nineteenth century perspective. Highly engaging, completely recommended even in the 21st Century!

Pretty Good. It was a pretty good book. I would recommend it.

The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Beautifully written

Liked it, but too hard to understand. I think it is a good book, and was a good book when everyone could speak that type of English, but now it is hard to understand and get what the author is trying to say to you the reader

Great. Short story, easy to read and understand. I read a lot of old spooky stories and they definitely fall more under the stressful category than the scary one. I like a book that will make me sweat and this was one of them. Fast paced compared to many older stories.

Classic story.. The story of Jekyll and Hyde is such a classic. It was intriguing to read this book to learn the origins of this well known fable. It is a great short read. Yes, the story at times is dated but definitely worth the read!

Don’t not recommend. The most confusing book I have ever read

Loved it. I loved this book. If you like the classic gothic horror stories, I definitely recommend.

Eh. The movie was better

Un clásico. En tu lista de “leer antes de morir”

Classic. This book is a true classic. The storyline is absolutely fascinating, but the style of writing is pre-1900 which make certain parts very difficult to understand. Though this story is great, I wouldn't suggest this to an amateur reader for the style is very complex.

Slow but good. Tough to get used to the language but overall a terrific classic.

Awesome. Im 11 and i love this book. Im being Miss hyde for halloween

????. Did not get the book

The peril between good and evil. This book was so good; it was spooky but at the same time an allegory about our human nature: good intentions vs bad! Definitely recommend!

Intriguing book. I like the story and the plot twist a lot and was interested to see how things would turn out in the end. However, the pace was a bit too fast for me to completely sink in the atmosphere. If anyone reading this doesn’t mind a fast paced mystery, check this book out.

Thrilling. From beginning to end, I couldn’t put it down.

Read it and shut. It’s an old secret

Great book. Great book with tuff language

Dr Jekyll n mr hyde. Diabolical

Tough read, but worth it. Can be a bit of a tough read as it was clearly written a long long, LONG time ago. So it can get confusing with the speech. However, if you can power through it, it’s a decent read.

Not For Me. Interesting story and well written. Just not for me. I’m sure others will enjoy this book.

A frightening but terrific classic. I first read this book thinking it would be one of those many mediocre short novella type books which many exaggerations are made about, claiming “It’s the greatest book”. Boy, was I wrong. This was an amazing, frightening novel.

Great.. Just Great.

Eh. It’s definitely old. Big problem: SPOILER WARNING By the end of the book Jekyll is not held accountable for his actions and given a free redemption pass by death and pitied. It’s treated as everything in the story that happens is not his fault even though it clearly is.

Bad topic for English. My English class worked with this book for like 12 weeks. I’m glad Jekyll died

Good. Great book to read

Recommended. A great classic, draws you in right from the start. Terrifying, but also just well written! The only reason why this lost a star was not because of anything to do with plot, story line etc, but because this book was written so long ago, there will be some words you’ll have to look up !

Ok, but for older people.. This book is a mix between something an elderly person would read to a young person interested in horror books. I ( who is personally interested in horror/crime and thrillers ) didn’t necessarily like it. It had a lot of complicated words that I didn’t know the meaning of, hence why I think it is for older people. Though if you like reading about murders and lawyers then this is the book for you.

Fantastic read. It was through a series on Netflix that I became aware of this book. It was indeed a delightful read that I ought to re-read to digest the language. A short read, and yet so full with meaning.

Ok. Not that great, didn't really enjoy it that much.

Classic for a reason.. I thought I’d get this on my phone as i have been reading through all the classic horror novels and I wasn’t expecting too much with an 100 page length. But, wow I couldn’t put it down. Very suspenseful and keeps the action going at a good, but not too quick, pace. Very entertaining especially if you don’t want to commit for a long read!

Dank Memels. Goodreads 9/11 it sucked worse than michael rosen ytp videos. THIS BOOK IS MINE.

Beautiful story. Beautiful story about humanity, humility and morality. The novel is centred around human conscience and the difference between right and wrong. This poses many taunting questions - this story will stay with you long after you have finished reading. A beautifully written classic tale centred around the difference between right and wrong, science and religion also makes for an amazing storyline. Tantalising questions aside, this beautiful tale of battles between light and dark, right and wrong, science and religion, is a classic must-read tale for anyone who is as human as Jekyll himself.

Incredible Tale!. RLS excels in depicting the inner struggle we all face at some point in our lives, albeit magnified many times, between what we know to be good and moral, and that which we are all too well aware would mean our eventual ruin. Anyone who has not been at this junction is in closer in spirit to Mr Utterson than to the kindly but destruction bent Dr Jekyll. Wonderfully written, a true classic in every sense.

The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. Good book but takes time to get going, tad slow at times

Excellent. Such a brilliant classic and a great ending!

DEAD!!!. The book is boring and just dead to read don't bother!!!

A short easy-to-read classic. A great short novella, highlighting the duality of man and the potential animalistic nature we hold within ourselves. Easy and quick to read!

Meh.... I would r8 8/8 m8 no h8 it's gr8 masterb8

nice. great book and was able to read to all in one sitting!

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Can't get enough of this novel. I also studied it in school and the strange plot twists never fail to delight, and the iBooks format made reading it a joy. Must have been my 3rd or 4th time reading this novella and I still enjoy reading every page. It is a great length for me as I can read it on the go, and I would reccomend to anyone wanting a novel with a difference. The story and format truly are outstanding in their field.

Peak. Dead ting

A Fantastic Read. In short, I see that this story is about a man who is dwelling with himself. He wanders where belongs in life and he cannot see that where he was in life was a perfect place but he did not seem to think so. The story is about the evolution of man and the story lets the reader think of Jekyll and Hyde as two completely different people when they are actually the same person, with alternate egos. This book is worth reading.

The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. A simply cracking read.

Elton John. Me gusta sí señor

Loved it. I loved this book. I enjoyed it so much. As I did read it during my school years i was glad to read again. And it was free. :)

Lovely. Lovely jubbly

Great read. Thoroughly enjoyed the tale of this dual personality within one being. The characters are very developed throughout. However one should be aware of the apparent confusion of thought in the context of when this was written.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The book was a hard book to read because of the grammar structure which was so well written by this author. It was really hard to follow and I'm glad to have read one of this classic books. It was very well structurally into words. Wow. I couldn't believe it. A good read.

A must read but a dreary one. The societal fears and Darwinist explorations behind this novella make it a fascinating read but, releasing it now, twenty years on from my first effort, I feel similarly disappointed. Language is unnecessarily dense and heavy going, even for its time, leaving little room for character development and intricacies of plot. I trusted through but was happy for it to end! Back to the twenty first century for my next read.

Amazing. Defiantly recommend Best book I have ever read 👌

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Absolutely spiffing!!! A pure classic

Good book. Amazing book when you understand what the words mean

amazing book.. that was great thanks so much!

Captivating, thrilling and gothic.. I have watched many adaptations of this book (the best being John Hannah's portrayal, if you love the book check it out!) but have only just got round to the book and I loved it! I read it in one day I just couldn't put it down! It's brilliantly dark and gothic and at only 105 pages everything you need is there, I was concerned at the lack of pages thinking that the gruesome and suspense factors would be low and a little boring but I was so wrong Robert Louis Stevenson is a fantastic author and I'm off to download more of his work now. If you enjoy gothic, dark and mind bending stories read this fantastic story!

Its a very very awful book. I really much dislike this booke bcos it be much boringe plus badness

The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. worst book ever so hard to read and so unreal

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Fantastic reading! My first time with this legendary story. It made me think how much of what can be seen as fiction, can actually be a reflection of our lives. I will definitely read it again in the future. Such a great author; Treasure Island is also brilliant! 5 stars.

It was ok. I didn't chose to download this book but I had to because we were going to have a test on this book in school so teachers said that we have to download it, anyway the book was interesting in sum chapters but overall quite boring

I read this to my dead rat. It loved this story i recommend to every rat that is dead

Good book. I have to admit this book if full of mysteries by because I saw van helsing I knew about Hyde so once I saw the title of the book and saw the picture of Jekyll I knew that Jekyll would be Hyde but I would still recommend to anyone who likes the mystery kind of genre

Raw and Uncensored. it shows how back in the 19th century, men were restricted from doing what they wanted because they wanted to keep their reputation as clean cut in the eye of the public... which then often limited them from doing the things that they wanted to do. although Hyde is seen as a very drastic and out of place character, we also see that he is very free to explore the boundaries of the Victorian society and test the limits, but as for Hyde, the public look up to him for the titles he has earned and the socially acceptable behaviour that he has put on display, not knowing how restricted he would feel, showing that although you may be the richest, smartest and most clever person in the world, you also have another side, your evil side that you do not want anyone to see at all.

Wow. This book is really interesting it’s really good u should read it I’m telling u. U won’t regret it 👍🏽
