Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka Book Summary

The Metamorphosis (German: Die Verwandlung, also sometimes translated as The Transformation) is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. It has been cited as one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century and is studied in colleges and universities across the Western world. The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Samsa's transformation is never revealed, and Kafka never did give an explanation. The rest of Kafka's novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repulsed by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.

Life Lessons for Us All. Kafka's style isn't for everyone. When I was a young university student, the nuances of this book could only penetrate my consciousness so deeply because I was lacking real world experience. If you only read this book in high school or college because it was a class requirement, then I would encourage you to revisit this great piece of literary work.

Not my favorite. It depends on your personal taste, but this is more fantasy than I would prefer. The characters, I feel, have a bit of extreme personalities (not as realistic in that sense). Fortunately it was: short, easy to read, and easy to understand.

i love it. *Desires*

Nice, Pleasant, Short. Neat little book that leaves a lot to the reader’s imagination. Nice and eerie in some areas. Good short read.

Kafka's ADD kicked it big time?. It seems as though he started a story to be finished by whomever reads it.

Not a bug. I've always believed, even debated with my professors ( getting A's) that the main character had a mental breakdown, not actually turning into a bug! This being facilitated by his family. Just my take--enjoy!!!

No point...?. This book as no story line to it

A Forced Read. I had to read this for my English class and I thought it was ok. I don't understand the end so much but it was a good read.

Disturbing and Beautiful. Kafka writes the strangest of stories. Stories that never seen to provide tremendous peaks in drama but slow and bothersome narrative.

Metamorphosis. This is a very fun and friendly story that can put a smile on ones face!

Great book. Haven't read anything that good in a while!

metamorphisis. terrible and gross

Stressful and Kafka. I had to google what was going on after reading a couple of pages. After reading about the term Kafkaesque, I understood it all. The story plays out like a dream with how time flows and how perspectives work. It was beautiful and disgusting and sad and stressful. This was my first Kafka story but it definitely won’t be my last. One of my new favorite authors, I’m just sad it took me till 22 years old to discover him.

Metamorphosis. Weird boring and waste of time to read 👎🏾 In future I’ll send just stick to my business reading and nonfiction topics

Hated It. I have tried three times to read this book and it is simply too repulsive and ridiculously strange to get past the first chapter.

I am Gregor. Great book, still very applicable to today’s economic strife alineating workers. People scared to call in sick, living at home with your parents, and trying to reach unobtainable sale’s quotas in the hope of making it to the top!

Metamorphosis. Not worth reading.

Good. Good but I wish the ending was longer

Great. GREAT.

Good book, but sad ending. Very interesting plot and kept me reading till the end

Philosophical delight. As a mom or as a father you are spending your life for a child or doing so much for your spouse - remember what Gregor"s family do to him when he is of no use. The past is what it is. He did what he did. He can do no more - there is no gratification from that relationship - get rid of him. That is the essence of all social relationships and the family is no exception. The take away - live your existence and do your duty to others but before that to yourself - the western living by and large gets it for most relationships than for mother and children..

Metamorphosis. Mannnn I really wanted to like this book, but I found myself absolutely trudging through it. The entire time I was feeling like okay c’mon wrap it up. It’s an elusive and a poetic play on the struggles of who’s someone being nursed, and someone doing the nursing (family dynamic). A story I can’t entirely relate to or have the means to care about (at least in this drawn out format). Shoulda coulda woulda recommended it as a short story. Yeesh

zamuza. za-za-zamuza <3 (Nightcord at 25:00 reference)

Man to animal – was he ever indeed a man?. Perhaps you read this story as a teenager in high school as part of your college-bound reading list. I certainly did, remembering two things: a cockroach and an apple slice. The rest of the details had alluded to me until I re-read this as an adult. One morning, Gregor Samsa, awake from uneasy dreams, found himself transformed into a gigantic insect in his bed. Things only get worse from there. As you may imagine, the family is not thrilled with the appearance of a giant insect in one of the bedrooms. Fear, hesitation, and confusion are all present. What is the family to do? Kill it, feed it, maybe drive it outside and away from home. Gregor becomes a member to hide so that he doesn’t disgrace his family or cause a situation that decreases the family’s stature in their social circles. His inability to communicate with his family makes him an outsider in his own home; his life offers no joy or direction, and he is an alienated man.

Avid reader. Certainly different but have read worse. Makes one wonder what Kafka wanted to convey.

great. it was rlly sad, the ending made me feel bad for samsa. pretty interesting and a quick read

When a Man Becomes a Bug. I had high hopes for this book, due to its interesting premise. Spoiler alert! But when the bug that was Gregor just stayed in his room and died, I felt cheated. I thought it would've been cool if it had eaten his family.

me too gregor. how he died....so disappointed

Ok. So I gave this book only two stars because it was boring. The ending, and the whole entire book didn't make any sense to me. My opinion, your opinion could be different :)

Better than bugs life. A very relatable story

Not Cool At All. He should have awaken or something of that nature. It sucked that nothing got better. Just sad true to life story.

Ew. I literally just hate bugs and this book is just about one big one

Metamorphosis. Very disturbing.

Translated.. It's a great book originally, but it's translated so it doesn't match with other books and that makes it hard to do studies and things like that.

Pretty good. Makes you think of the deeper meanings in life

Not for me...... Its well written but the ending kinda screws you over in the end. Just makes ya feel empty and betrayed while opening up more questions. Like ya just wasted a lot of time. Its not for the average Joe

Great book. Even though the ending is a little strange, it is greatly written and i suggest it to all readers

So weird. What a weird book!!! Is there anything to take from it? I really don't know.

I loved it!!!. This is an amazing novel, despite the character being a "vermin" or "bug" (this depends upon which translation you choose) i felt it was immediately easy to feel how Gregor felt. I also really enjoyed the way the novel was set up, because despite it being in one setting, the story remained captivating and fluid. There were so many connections between Gregor and Franz that it made me understand where the novel came from. Also this specific translation of the novel is one of my favorites! :) -Happy reading!

A strange little novel. Absurd, ruminating, depressing, funny, and beautiful. Who knew that a human could be so much like a caterpillar (or vice versa)

A Mix of Emotions. Some humorous moments overwhelmed by the confusion and sadness of the course of the story. I finished it in about an hour, great for a quick read.

Scary!. I felt like i was the one transforming. Finished it in 2 days. Couldn't stop reading until i was done.

A Few Words. I'm no expert author or reviewer, but I found this to be an entertaining read. It wasn't too long, and I liked the premise. I thought it to be very precise and to the point.

A very sad, insightful piece.. The story of Gregor is a sad one. Not quite sure yet what to make of it, but it was a very insightful, enjoyable read.

Bizarre. What in the world possessed this story?

Metamorphosis. “The little legs had firm ground beneath them, he was delighted to note that they were completely under his command, they strained to carry him off wherever he might desire, and he finally believed that the final alleviation of all his grief was imminent.”. This quote from Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis encapsulates the salesman protagonist’s sorrow. Desperate to go about his life after transforming into an enormous insect and the alienation he feels doomed to suffer, Gregor copes with his bizarre situation and watches his family become increasingly miserable. But changes in the family he loved, along with the feeling of loneliness prowl his existence. Written as a meditation on isolation, the book depicts the feeling of worthlessness and being unwanted in a disturbing and strange way, with lurid descriptions, ridiculous plot, and absurd characters. Readers delight in the portraits of depression and resentment that has sparked much conversation and ideas. While the story can be tough to get through at times and not particularly well written, the questions about identity and humanity leave you thinking and it’s up to the reader if they’re willing to dig in to the end of this story.

Years ago. During the time of my youth, my mother returned to her education for the purpose of becoming a teacher. In one of her literature classes, this story was in one of her require reading books. Out of curiosity I had read her book. To this day I recall the amazement with how quickly I was sucked into the story by the unusual events portrayed in the first paragraph. Since that time I have found a profound happiness in the written words of so many authors.

Mr.Samsa. I found this book on a buzzfeed list that said "it will change the way you treat people". This book was powerful, and saddening, it makes you really think about how others feel about your actions. Good read for a lover of classics and people with weird bug obsessions!

Sad :-(. A fabulous story with a sad ending. Almost make me feel sad for bugs.

Amazing book. Arguably the best book of all time

:(. One of the most depressing books I’ve ever read.

I loved this Book, thanks Siesta Z! Great for Valentine’s. This was a Great work of Literature, and short enough to be read in Two, Three or Four days, if you’ve got the time to. I got in to Classic Literature mainly thanks to Siesta Z,, and that is where I found about this book. At first I decided to Start reading the Metamorphosis around Valentine’s Day, because it seemed to fit ‘Dying Alone’ quite Well, but then I found that the Book was in fact extremely Captivating and that you’d keep wanting to read on. I loved the Book, at times it got Sad, but it’s not really anything that you can’t handle, it was pretty fun reading it most of the time. I loved the book, and sometimes it felt Relatable. Also the first ever book I’ve read Virtually, on Screen. Deserves the 5 stars I gave it. Kafka’s Metamorphosis was Great, thanks!

poor Gregor. fantastic read...really made me think about how we treat disability and difference as a society.

Fascinating. An immensely enjoyable read, the snappy length adding to the brisk poignancy. Kafka’s surreal situation isolating a man from the world addresses the transient nature of identity and the meaning of family to jarring effect.

Banging novel. Banger

Fantastic. Very well written and a nice easy read, I felt the pages turned themselves and thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Very interesting and Good read. Really enjoyed this book. Once I got invested into the story, I found it difficult to put down, without finishing the whole story in one go. Would recommend. :)

Metamorphosis. In a word, this book was...creepy. Kafka’s writing tends to be dark, unsettling and sad, and this tale is no different. It evokes strange, ghastly images that will kind of stick with me for a long time- and certainly come to mind every time I see a bug, from now on.

Life changes. Evolution of life told in the most fascinating way.
