The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells Book Summary

An Apple Books Classic edition.

“Alone-it is wonderful how little a man can do alone! To rob a little, to hurt a little, and there is the end.” What would you do if you were became invisible? Would you use that power for good, or would you become consumed with the freedom it afforded you? Griffin, the antihero of H.G. Wells’ classic novel, definitely belongs to the latter school of thought. A misunderstood genius with albinism, Griffin has suffered taunts and isolation his whole life. As he descends into madness, his plans become far darker than simple revenge on those who have wronged him.

In addition to this creepy novel, H.G. Wells-who is widely seen as the father of science fiction-also wrote The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, and The Island of Doctor Moreau;. Besides killer plots, his work provides chilling insight on human nature. The Invisible Manis a story about cruelty, curiosity, and unfettered power. Read it-and you’ll immediately notice its inescapable influence on modern literature, movies, and comic books.

WOW. Loved the book the ending was kind of vivid but the story was great scary, one chapter was sort of funny when the guy kept saying ass, and the book was written beautifully. Hands down, 5 stars

The Invisible Man. Short and sweet. Such a classic.

Good book. This book described action extremely vividly and describes scenery and sounds and feeling in a manner of splendour. The Invisible Man himself has incredible character development and how his actions affect the environment/world and how the world and people react to him is very dynamic.

Amazing read. This, given the time it was written and the vocabulary used at the time, was a somewhat challenging read for me. Once I got a hang of the wording and really started to read it I enjoyed it a lot. It’s a very unique story and has great characters. The ending seemed like it could’ve given a little more but this is still an amazing read and would recommend to anyone that wants a intriguing story with challenging vocabulary.

H.G. Wells really knows how to set a precedent. It’s amazing how this man’s ideas set the first stone to the creative works of so many others hundreds of years later. The idea of time being traversable, alien invasions, or in this case invisibility all have contributed so much to modern science fiction. On this book in particular,I found it quite intriguing to see the origin of the trope of an invisible being causing havoc in the world. One thing modern sci-fi writers could take not on is Well’s ability to use actual physics in attempt to justify the outlandish aspect of invisibility (rather than just throwing the word “quantum,” in there a few times and never bringing it up again.) Also liked seeing the psychological revelation of the invisible man, as his abilities both closed and opened certain possibilities to him

Awesome!. Short and exciting! Loved this book!

How I feel about the invisible man. It was a really good book but why did you put any words on the last page of a chapter but all in all it was really great book to read

Slow. Slower. Didn’t care. Exciting ending.. I really don’t know what to say about this book. I was hoping for something a little more exciting, I suppose. The truth is that the book is very slow until a little after halfway through. The ending is quite fun and almost worth the sometimes extremely slow pace of the book.

I like it. It didn’t end how I expected it to. At first I didn’t really like him, but towards the last page I felt for the invisible man.

11/10. Not usually into the classics if I must say; although as I began reading this book, I found myself unable to stop reading. I had to know what ‘The Invisible Man’ had planned, how he became, how he would end. Highly recommend to any and all fiction lovers of all ages!

The invisible man. Really great book. Highly recommend

An ok book. The plot is good - nice short story about an invisible guy. Tired of reading old English stuff because it’s hard to understand at times. It was exciting, yet boring. I was confused at some parts.

Character slang. The slang used by some characters is difficult to follow. In the first few chapters, I found myself getting annoyed with the way slang was portrayed.

Holding the test of time.. A very well written and thoughtful story. Wells once again spins a wonderful tail as only he can. A man studies reflection and refraction and turns himself invisible. He never anticipated that he would spend his days naked, cold and hungry. A scientist turns desperate and finally deadly. As he rampages the town in a reign of terror, another man launches his plans to find him. In a final showdown one is victorious. Classic literature that still is fresh and timely. Well done Mr. Wells.

Sorry for the. Sorry for the delay

Left scratching my head. The story started off slowly, picked up speed and then went out with a whimper. What’s the moral of the story? Be careful with what you experiment with? Only use science for the good of mankind and not for personal gain?

Great book.. I enjoyed this book very much.

The Invisible Man. While I enjoy classic novels I found this book to be rather bland when compared to Frankenstein or Dracula or any other number of character books. It’s not bad by any means and worth the read but it loses something in our modern era when there are so many invisible man stories and movies which themselves are not too interesting.

Question. Where did his start in life approach from (what the scientific label for household families)..nuclear I think. But I’m sure there are more scientific names bc as a society we dissect where -we’re from period. But I thought this would be good to know since I’m wanting to read the book. Especially the public domain one.

Terrible for the most part. There’s a lot of boring fluff but Griffin becoming a Shakespearean villain at the end almost makes up for it. It’s supposed to be inspired by the Ring of Gyges story, but I don’t know how Wells managed to make it even more dull.

Timeless. Timeless and wonderfully written.

Olivia Johnson. This is the coolest book I've ever read and this is a five-star rate.

I Waited Too Long…. …to get around to reading this book. Movies seldom do justice to the books they are based upon, and the 1933 film adaptation is only a vague interpretation at best. Wells’s tome may not include the specifics of how Griffin achieves his invisibility, but the rest of the tale more than makes up for it. I give the Claude Rains (Jack Griffin) film 3 stars, and that only out of nostalgia—Wells’s book gets an easy 5. I highly recommend it. —Old Man from Dakota

Okay.. Wish the ending was better. Looking forward to watching the movie because I just finished the book.

I like how the book is and how interesting this book is .. I like how the author stated in this book and what I don’t like is nothing really

A classic. As always, H.G Wells has incredible story-telling abilities, a great novel, and constantly interesting. Hardly a moment of low-action in this book.

Not as expected. A classic tale that I did not truly know but certainly enjoyed.

Very good. It was very nice at the end it was kinda sad for our invis man Lyon die

Not my fav. Meh. Just didn’t get into it. Not a bad book just didn’t capture my undivided attention.

Good but not great. It was slow until the end and the end was anticlimactic.

Good story. Hard to understand at times but a good story.

Fascinating book. HG Wells creates such an engaging and interesting story

Worth a read. I loved this story and all of its detail. I’ve seen many invisible man movies but none tell this particular story, and none have the amount of humanity and depth of character. Although he becomes a monster of sorts you can still find some empathy for him in his current state.

What you can’t see can kill you.... Not surprisingly, I read this book as a paperback. From the first page, I was hooked! I will go ahead and admit that the edition I read was adapted and abridged for modern audiences, but there is something to be said for this. When I was young and still in high school, my teacher read Frankenstein aloud to our entire class. It turned me into such a gigantic fan of the book that I was not only delighted when they finally made a faithful film adaptation of the story in the 90s called Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but while the edition our teacher read to us was an adapted and abridged edition, I was determined that I would someday track down an original publication with the original text and buy it to read. Thanks to my liking for buying books from thrift stores, this has happened very recently and I’m looking forward eagerly to reading the book. I enjoyed The Invisible Man enough that the same is true of this story. If I ever find a publication of the book as H.G. Wells originally wrote it, I will be ecstatic about reading it! Wells is usually well-known as a science fiction writer, but this fantastic book is a must for horror fans who love love horror classics!

Good book. It’s a good book It describes things very well and is easy to picture in your head

The curse of invisibility. A brilliant young scientist, engaged in self isolation for years, obsessed with keeping his discoveries all for himself, finally makes himself truly invisible and alone, and madness is the result.

Easy read. This book was easy to read with plenty of action to keep the story moving. The chapters are short, so frequent interruptions are not a problem.

The Invisible Man at last!. After watching of the movies based on this novel, I decided to read it for myself. If only they would make a movie based on H. G. Wells novel, it would be an amazing film to watch. The Universal’s earlier The Invisible Man with Claude Rains borrowed heavily from the book, but they changed several key scenes told here. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and I encourage other readers to spend time in its pages as you follow the adventures of a man turned invisible.

Glad to finally read this. Always wanted to read this story. It started out very interesting and was in general a good story. I wish there had been more back story about the main character and a little less of him just being hunted down. But hey, you cant argue with a classic.

Big pp. Pp

My favorite book. Not much else to say besides it’s amazing

Good, solid book. The more you read, the faster it gets. It also leaves you asking about what point insanity really starts. It’s like Frankenstein, but better. Would highly recommend

Good book. It’s a good book. But it’s kind of boring till the last 50 pages of the book. Wish the was more fun action in the rising action.

Worthy of classic status. A fast-paced, tragic thriller with ethical questions. Excellent read!

Good, short read. This was a good and easy read. I liked the storyline and watching how the invisible man moved through life.

Easy to read. Good book. I don’t really read that much but I want to get into reading more, and this was a good place to start.

Did. Hey time r

Not for me.. Had a very interesting plot, however I just kept losing interest.

A Good Yarn. A good yarn though dated.

So glad I read this. So glad I read this!

Entertaining enough. Entertaining enough. Author with very good imagination.

The Invisible BAM!. Dude goes invisible and goes around attacking everyone in the town.

Couldn’t put it down!. I am completing a classics book challenge and I must say I really enjoyed this one. H.G Wells writes this book with such pace you have to keep reading on to find out what happens next. Similar to Dr Jekyll in the sense that an experiment gives them these new found powers to live as they please and as they please does not involve helping others in anyway! The invisible man is a complete anti hero’s in that H.G Wells left me feeling sorry for this character and actually rooting for him to have his revenge against the other characters for their constant betrayal. I feel that anybody who is consistently spurned by mankind given his scientific discovery could easily become ‘the terror’ he became throughout the text. Such a good book - definitely will reread in the future!

Good. Excellent

Superfoolery. Whilst the numerous action scenes are tiresome to visualise, the monologue of the world’s first sci-fi supervillain is a fantastic discovery of his super powers and maniacal master plan for world domination.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. A very good read.

Good read.. All in all this was a good, quick read, albeit a slow start.

An easy read, would definitely recommend to people that are trying to get back into reading.. This book is exciting and engaging. The pacing of events was easy to follow and not difficult to understand at all. In my opinion, the ending was obvious, but i think for the nature of this story it did make sense and fit the overall vibe of the story. The characters were funny and diverse (in terms of personality and attitude) despite them having ideals that would be common of people living in the countryside during the 20th century. Despite the good about this book, there are a few things that i did find irritating at times. For example, there were several characters that were deployed out of convenience for the plot rather than significance to the plot and sometimes I think it can make a narrative feel forced. Even though it didn’t take away from this story in particular, it is something that lots of writers tend to do, especially when concluding a major plot point. Another thing that I thought could’ve been explored more was the character development of the Invisible Man; I think it would’ve been really interesting to learn more about his childhood and his relationships with other people while he was a student, just so I could build a stronger relationship with the character. At times I also found it difficult to keep up with the action. This book has a lot of physical action in it and at maybe two or three points in the stories you do need to read closely to follow what’s actually going on as it is as fast-paced as it would’ve physically happened. However, these points didn’t make the book bad at all, as it is a short book anyway and I doubt it was trying to enforce lots of deeper meanings about society anyway. It’s definitely not the absolute best book I’ve read, but that’s mostly because I personally prefer to read books that deal with stronger themes and ideas. In terms of language, Wells has a brilliant vocabulary, incorporates humour into his descriptions making the book feel light-hearted at times, and creates strong dialogue that also encompasses the Cotswold accent. To conclude, this is a story worth reading if you’re looking for a casual novel to dive into that doesn’t require a lot of mental strain.

The quintessential mad scientist story. With a knack for capturing the intersection of the dramatic with the extremely mundane, this quintessential mad scientist story is an absolute caper. Almost as a bonus, the ‘science’ in this piece of science fiction is at least plausibly absurd and has a basis in real optics. The Invisible Man absolutely deserves its place as a classic of science fiction.

Ok. Ok

Lol. never read it lol

It’s okay. Good story.
