The Life of Abraham Lincoln by Henry Ketcham Book Summary

As a young man, Lincoln stood out from the crowd, tall and lanky at six-feet four-inches. He arrived in New Salem and landed a job as a clerk in a general store. Soon thereafter, Lincoln started to make a name for himself, successfully wrestling the town bully and amazing most of his neighbors with his strength and ability to split rails and fell trees—a survival skill that he developed as a child of the American frontier. In small towns during that era, the general store was a meeting place, and thus Lincoln grew to know the community well. He delighted people with his wit, intelligence, and integrity. For the less literate citizens of New Salem, Abe's ability to read and write was invaluable. He quickly became a popular member of the town, endearing himself to the locals as a good-natured and "bookish" young man.

The best. I really enjoyed this book, written with love and devotion of our great president Lincoln. I learned so much more than the history books tell us. Lincoln, a truly humble, very intelligent person who wanted our government to be for the people. Republicans should heed this message today!

The life of Abraham Lincoln. I strongly recommend this book for those who wish to learn more about the true man, Abraham Lincoln. The author does an excellent job of incorporating historical events with the emotions of the people and the time. The testimonials are a dramatic close to an insightful book.

In response to reviewer "Anthony J". The difficult language you are referring to dates all the way back to 2001. The book was not written in the 19th century, nor the 20th for that matter. It was published 11 years ago.

Review. A great look into the great life of a great man.

A great way to learn Abraham Lincoln. Great book,

The life of Abraham Lincoln. Enjoyed the book very much. Learned a lot that I did not know.

The Life of Abraham Lincoln. Never before have I read a book that so clearly demonstrates the character of this good man as this book. Even though Lincoln is quoted to have said, early in the book, that he was not a Christian, everything I see in his character and devotion to God and man belies that purported denial. My late husband was a devotee of Lincoln, and a lover of history, especially that of the Civil War, and all of the places we toured to trace that era have come alive and meaningful through this story of the life of Lincoln. This book imparts a new depth of pride and sympathy with this man, whom I now believe was placed on the earth at this particular time to save the American promise for his descendants and ours. I do not pretend to know half of what my husband knew of that war, but he and I transcribed and published the diary of Thomas Hart Benton McCain, a member and officer of the Indiana 86th Infantry, along with stories from two books he contributed to and published in Crawfordsville, Indiana after the war. In his diary, transcribed in the book, "In Song and Sorrow," he speaks of his deep sorrow and that of other soldiers upon hearing of the assassination of President Lincoln. Geraldine M. C. Rue

Excellent book very well wrote. Good

I haven't read it. I haven't read it

Hut tress. This book was boring

The life of Abraham Lincoln. I enjoyed this book very much. Feel that since it was written not that many years after his life that it was probably very accurate. Gave me a real feel for the man.

The Life of Abraham Lincoln. Slow, fact filled and quite detailed about the life of our 16th President. Has many interesting facts especially about the Civil War and how many of the of the famous figures of that time wove in and out of the eve at of the day.

Outstanding. A book that is worth your time.

COOL. AWSOMEST THING EVER I used this for a history report an d it was so helpful thank u !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Find the ¡

The Life of Abraham Lincoln. A heartwarming look into the soul of perhaps the greatest man the country or world has ever known! Shall we ever know another so great? Only God knows.

The Life of Abraham Lincoln. This should be required reading. This book was written by a man who was alive during the Civil War. There is no revisionist history. This is an excellent depiction of the complicated position Lincoln, and the country, had to encounter. God bless Abraham Lincoln.

Great detail. This book gives great detail to the life of Abraham Lincoln and the struggles of the Civil War and emancipation of slavery. I had some trouble following the writing but due only to the fact that it was written in a period so long ago. Of course this fact also adds to the depth in which the book immerses the reader into the setting of the book. Overall not the most engaging biography I've read, however written with much detail and depth into Lincoln's life, and therefore deserves a recommendation.
