The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Book Summary

Dorian is a good-natured young man until he discovers the power of his own exceptional beauty. The Picture of Dorian Gray. A page turner and plot worthy of any modern day novel. I loved this book and had been meaning to read it for years. Human nature at its most revealing.

Óscar Wild thoughts. I believe this book portrays many of the authors contradicting thoughts that he had upon society and him self, the plot is not the picture and it’s changing state but the character of Dorian Gray, also it has a great dialogue and many phrases that will make you thing and find a more profound meaning to the story.

Solid. But not extraordinary

The plot is consistently building. Loved the cascading storyline of bad and good

Excellent Read!. Interested in becoming more well read...I picked this up based on the recommendation of a friend. It's a great read. 👍 Creepy and compelling. Good stuff.

New heights for long winded dull. Long boring sections on the philosophy of something. The characters are one dimensional and often act without thought of even a hint of intelligence, H

Magnificent. Words alone cannot give the proper praises due this read! I am beyond inspired. Thank you for keeping the classics alive to cherish forever!

Great Imagery and Surprising Turns. What a beautiful book that took something that felt so grounded and down to earth and completely surprises the reader with events and imagery you’d only expect a great author to pen. One chapter in the book (its longest chapter I might add) is arduous and hard to get through but you are almost immediately rewarded with incredible climax and conclusion.

Great book. Really makes you wonder about the things you've done in your life. I highly recommend this book.

Read on a whim (LoEG). 18. seldom read books. a good read despite being mostly predictable.

Wow.. After finishing this book, it's so clear that nothing comes close to the classics. It's 824 pages on iPhone but it goes by in two afternoons. Wilde was a genius and it's a tragedy that he never had the time or health for another novel. And the best part… it's free! No excuse to leave this one untouched! 

My favorite book and author!. I re-read this book all the time; it's great! It makes you think for days and days, and it's absolutely hilarious.

The picture of Dorian Gray. Great book! Chapter 11 is really boring but everything else is so good. I'm glad I decided to read the classics

Picture of Dorian gray. Great book. The movie (2009 version) really displays how one can live his life when in the position of Dorian gray. The book really sheds some light of how high society holds beauty, and how little actual words or actions mean. This book will make you think and once you get into it you won't be able to put it down. Bravo, Mr. Wilde.

Amazing. Loved it as much as the movie :)

Dorian. Great book. Just one chapter was boring

Fantastic. Fantastic novel. This version is missing words in the Shakespeare passages. This is a very minor inconvenience and does not occur often. There are approximately 3-4 passages with words cut off in the entire novel.

Larry stylinson. Any one else only read cause of the Larry fanfic young and beautiful? Is an incredible book though didn’t like chapter 11 but it’s exquisite besides that

A Great Read. A very interesting tale.

Love it. Greatest book ever written

Wilde is one of the most amazing authors I’ve ever come across. Oscar Wilde could write a book about grass growing and I would read the whole series. Right from the very beginning of the book, Wilde’s writing is able to paint the story with surprising vivacity, originality, and depth through the scenery and mainly Gray’s introspection. It’s a bit hard to read at times for a person who does not enjoy watching characters consistently choosing to go down the wrong path, but it’s nevertheless worth a read.

Classic Read. The Picture of Dorian Gray really is a fascinating story. I just finished reading the whole book for the first time. I grew up knowing of the story, but had never actually read it for myself. Oscar Wilde paints such vivid pictures with great detail. I highly recommend this book.

Interesting!. Highlighted tons of clever passages, definitely found it entertaining. Would make a great movie! :)

Beautiful chaotic tragedy. Prideful? Yes. Does Wilde paint beautifully with words? Yes. I went into this book with no preconceived notions and was blown away with words and art there in. Lord Henry was the most loyal friend to Dorian, that type of loyalty and honesty is not always easy to come by.

Wit and charm on every page. Except chapter eleven. Read the beginning and end of chapter eleven, but skip everything in between. The rest of the book is delicious.

Amazing. An invigorating classic. Must read

Enjoyed it. I really enjoyed reading this. Couldn’t put it down once I started. There are some lengthy and tedious parts (like others have said), but this book was just so good. Loved the ending; it really got me thinking.

Some nice pics, wouldn't pay for it.. It'd be nice to get gifted an app that had great reviews, and had been top of the charts, etc. Instead we're getting gifts that the developer pays apple to promote....

One of my favorite books. I simply cannot get over how much I enjoy this classic. Each time I read it, I find something new in a character that I enjoy/relate to.

Excellent. Excellent book love it !

The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wow. I started slowly, for it took a time to get used to the language, but shortly thereafter, I was completely enthralled!

Not a masterpiece to me. I read this because it was declared a masterpiece. I think it is a good book, with a very well crafted storyline. That being said, it was also wordy, overworked, and tedious. It is worth reading but with expectations of it being only average.

Beautiful. Dorian Gray is majestical. I chose to read this after watching the Penny Dreadful TV series. Out of all the old horror/fantasy stories I’ve read, this one takes the cake. Very easy to read compared to other older books. Of course, Oscar Wilde helps a ton with his use of a dreamy imagery no matter what the tone of the scene being told is.

Well first of.... I loved this book. That is all there is to it . Dorian Grey is a new personal fav. Secondly for those who are confused, his picture adsorbed what his body would have leaving Dorian unscathed. It is just the magic that comes with a fiction making our hearts desires a tangible thing

Oh youth. The avalanche of epigrams drowns the book and makes many passages clunky. The best chapter is the trip to the opium den. The writing is more natural and more beautiful because it is not strained.

The Picture of Dorian Gray. A very entertaining story! It is fun to read the classics as one learns so many new and interesting words and ways to "say" things. There were a few parts that got wordy and tried my patience and endurance. We'll worth the time!

Love this. This is absolutely one of my favorite novels I read in high school

Dorian Gray Review. This book is greatZ! It tells about vanity and how bad it is to be vain in life. One thing I don't get is how did he become youthful and his portrait become ugly?

The Picture of Dorian Grey. Great book, fascinating story w/ parallels timelessly suited to our current era!

kept me interested. this book kept me interested with its dialogue but when it comes to the narrator, it bored me; especially on the 11th chapter.

The picture of Dorian Gray. This book was quite good! I have never before read an entire book of Oscar Wilde's, mostly snippets of his poetry or selections of quotes from his many works, but I believe I'll make a habit of reading his works more often. I highly recommend this book! Just keep in mind that the English language was quite different at the time this work was written, and may be a bit much from time to time. I am an avid reader, a lot of my free time is and always has been spent reading a great variety of books. There were times I found Mr. Wilde's tangents to the story a bit tedious in his wording and descriptions, but I think it's mostly due to the way English was spoken during his time and the fact that I have not read a work from that period in quite a while. I did love the whole concept of what might happen if one had a representation of one's self that could absorb all the maladies that are thrust upon us in life and the maladies we choose to experience ourselves, while the entire time our physical bodies never blemish or grow older. Would we eventually come to the point of not being able to face our reflections in a mirror, or the very thing that absorbs all our faults and leaves us as fresh looking innocents? Wonderful, wonderful book!

My Review. Absolute masterpiece. A higher level read than most people born in my generation might be used to. Masterful nonetheless. A Diamond in a world filled with excrement and filth.

A good read. Enjoyed this novel very much. A lot of food for thought here.

Made me sick. This one made me sick, but I am sensitive and it is a classic.

Fascinating, beautifullay written story of a depraved soul. This is a masterpiece of imaginative writing. It is a strange story that seems at times to condone the sins of a detestable character, but the storyline and ending seem to clearly warn against these sins. Regardless of its likeliness as a possible story, it is fascinating, beautifully written and deep.

Disappointed. I expected more from this book that so many other works of literature and film make reference to.

The Picture of Dorian Gray. The real evil character in this book is Sir Harry Wotton. His theories, though clever and, to some readers may even seem to make sense, are all untrue. The things he says are examples of the subtlties of evil. It's somewhat frustrating to see this character's statements attributed to Oscar Wilde without the proviso that it is actually from a character in his book. I believe, due to the totallity of the message in the book, that Oscar Wilde doesn't adhere to any of the belifs expressed by this character he has created. This book is quite good and quite tragic.

Censored Version. This is a great novel, of course, but you don’t want this version. It’s the censored, 13 chapter version that is missing key characters, plot, wit, etc. Look for the 20 chapter version that includes Wilde’s preface.

The Picture of Dorian Grey. Utterly enthralled, I saw the movie when I was a child and it made such an impression on me that I had to read the book. There were so many things I had forgotten or had not been in the movie. A wonderful read about the dangers of vanity and sin.

Very dark. Very dark yet good… A classic! A must read

The Picture of Dorian Gray. Shame I've finished. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Enjoyable. Some pages were hard too read only reason I knocked a star off maybe that’s my device. I enjoyed it once I got past the first chapters. I may read again and rethink ma score.

Excellent. I don't know a lot about classical literature but this has been perhaps the most enjoyable novel I have ever read.

GREAT READ. Been wanting to read this for years and never got round to it, finally I did and thoroughly enjoyed every word.

Excellent. I don't usually enjoy Victorian literature but I found this a happy exception. Perhaps what is most enjoyable is the biting satire Wilde employs throughout. Would recommend.

Great book. Quite metaphysical and a good read

Excellent. One of my favourites

Good read. This was great; Dorian Gray turned out to be a well thought out and very three-dimentional character. I actually found myself sympathizing with him at times. I don't know if it's my impatience or personal dislike of the character, however, but I quite often ended up skipping paragraphs of Lord Henry's unnecessary dialogue. The movie is nothing at all like the book so I won't even bother comparing the two.

Liked it. My first Oscar Wilde book. I really enjoyed the story and witty banter.

The Picture of Dorian Gray. Really enjoyed this book and the slightly dated use of English which suited the story very well. I wish this had been on the syllabus for O level English when I was younger.

Writing at its best. I absolutely loved this book. A great compelling read. Will definitely encourage others to read. Amazing.

Classic horror fiction by a genius.. Chilling ending and an addictive read.

A love-hate relationship I'm not mad at. This book was a very peculiar read that resonates deeply within the reader. Some chapters will fill you with life, and some will bore you to death. Read my full review at www.introvertswonderland.blogspot.co.uk

Dorian Gray- Intriguing. Wow. Such a thought-provoking book.

Great book. I love it. Have never read this before despite it being a classic. Can't put it down.

Dorian Gray. Brilliant book, really well written and nice price (no price). Well worth a read I would recommend it to young readers as well as old ones

Wilde from start to finish. Probably one of the best classics I’ve read ! Love the sarcasm and wit of some characters and the storyline is intriguing you cannot stop from wanting to read another chapter. Lots of meanings, with a fabulous use of the English language. Would recommend.

Great. Really enjoyed this book. Wanted to read an English classic and couldn't face the usual suspects. Beautifully written. Must admit I found the intro very long and I did wonder if I could handle anymore. Luckily I went back to it that night and it moved on within a couple of pages. Overall great read and not too long.

Movie vs. Book please?. I saw the movie and it was great, no lying and wow Ben Barnes is gorgeous, but to be honest I am now terrified to read the book. Could someone please put up a review that compares the extremities of the book and film so that I can be sure? Thank you so much :D (the 5 stars are for the film - captivating and well directed albeit terrifying, which I suppose shows how good it is. However DEFINITELY NOT for younger viewers (under 13 at the least) as it is not only haunting but graphic :/)

Excellent. No point reviewing the story as it's a well known one. Excellent and it's in English despite what the other reviewer states.. Weirdo ! 

Picture of Dorian Gray. An absolutely enthralling read!

Poor old oscar. Poor old Oscar flamboyant, always seeking an audience drawn to the lime light like a moth to the flame. This novel augers his life and is portentous in it's depiction of narcissism and his ultimate fate. How he got away with publishing such and openly homoerotic book at the time I will never know. The unnerving nature of the image, remaining immortal while we age and deteriorate is reversed as a young and beautiful man remains impervious to corruption and age, while his remarkable portrait whithers and becomes decrepit. The characters moral corruption is mirrored by the external corruption of his portrait. This novel should be read in conjunction with the authors deprofundus, his melancholic but courageous account of his imprisonment. I really liken Oscar. Fickle and vein, but the moments when he puts aside the mask, and transcends the soppy romanticism of his time reveals a true poetic and complex human being. It free! What are you waiting for!

Poetic, thrilling, and thought provoking.. What a philosophically dense, poetic and exciting read with mystery and trial of the mind!

Great book. Hated Dorian and loathed Henry. Loved only Basil. Overall a really good and easy read

Cold. .

Amazing. The book is by far one of the best books I ever read. I can't believe it's a horror!!

A classic. Great book
