Midnight by Sister Souljah Book Summary

New York Times bestselling author Life After Death, the hip-hop generation's beloved and most compelling storyteller, delivers a powerful story about love and loyalty, strength and family.

In her bestselling novel, The Coldest Winter Ever, Sister Souljah introduced the world to Midnight, a brave but humble lieutenant to a prominent underworld businessman. Now, in a highly anticipated follow-up to her million-selling masterpiece, she brings readers into the life and dangerously close to the heart of this silent, fearless young man.

Raised in a wealthy, influential, Islamic African family, Midnight enjoys a life of comfort, confidence, and protection. Midnight's father provides him with a veil of privilege and deep, devoted love, but he never hides the truth about the fierce challenges of the world outside of his estate. So when Midnight's father's empire is attacked, he sends Midnight with his mother to the United States.

In the streets of Brooklyn, a young Midnight uses his Islamic mind-set and African intelligence to protect the ones he loves, build a business, reclaim his wealth and status, and remain true to his beliefs.

Midnight, a handsome and passionate young man, attracts many women. How he interacts and deals with them is a unique adventure. This is a highly sensual and tremendous love story about what a man is willing to risk and give to the women he loves most. Midnight will remain in your mind and beat in your heart for a lifetime.

Her "raw and true voice" (Publishers Weekly) will both soothe and arouse you. In a beautifully written and masterfully woven story, Sister Souljah has given us Midnight, and solidified her presence as the mother of all contemporary urban literature.

Slow Read. I don't know why this is called a follow up to Coldest Winter. The only correlation I've connected so far is Santiaga. I've read 684 pages, and that has taken me a few weeks. Please note, I'm the type of person to finish a book within a few days. It's very slow. And I mean in the form of calling someone slow, not "lets hurry and get to the action" slow. It's an okay read, I guess, and has more than subtle hints to make you understand that something is definitely off about the Black culture in the United States. I just wish it wasn't thrown out there so much as if to make a mockery of some of the characters. We get it already!

Movie for your mind.. I have never been so captivated, so motivated, and completely enthralled by a book. I am 20 years old, I read this book for the first time last year and my only regret is that I didn't read the book sooner. Like the Coldest Winter Ever this book is one you can't put down until you've read all of it. Beautiful love story with the power to change your outlook on intimacy. BUY THE BOOK..... You need it

Simply Amazing. Sista Souljah has simply outdone herself with this book. Amazing from start to finish... I couldn't put it down! Can't wait for the next book to come out!! Reserving my copy today!!

Brain power. I learned of midnight through “The Coldest Winter”. Reading “Midnight “ attached me to this character more. The depths Sista Soulja go is amazing while articulating the brain an mentality of this young black mature man. Like Akeima the attention to detail Sista Soulja uses in the form of words to paint pictures in our minds is amazing. 5/5 on this book. Long but very good read.

Great book on it's own. It's NOT a sequel or even proper prequel Coldest winter. It does give a great backstory to the character Midnight while shedding light on a unique perspective against an unexpected love story. It is a great read as a stand a lone. Do not expect too many references to Coldest Winter. This book alone could have a sequel.

Midnight. I love this book, I am in love with the character Midnight.

Excellent Read. One of best books I’ve indulged in. Sister Souljah has done it again. *Great read.

Love it. This book took me for a spin. But I glad she went in with midnight. It explain a lot how and why he was so loyal to his family and Santiago. I hope the second book To midnight explain how he meet Ricky. Love it midnight is my dude

More than meets the eye. This book is not for those who are looking to continue the story of "Winter".... but for those who want a better understanding of Midnight.... his presents in "The coldest winter ever" made me want to learn more about him... This book gave me that opportunity ....People ask me if this book is better and I always say "it's not better or worst... But there are definitely lesson to be learned"... I have a feeling WHEN Sister Soulja goes back to the story of Winter those that dismiss this book because its not "ghetto enough" ...they will be lost...

Mayonaka. I looooove this story. I couldn't put it down. So glad the next one is out TODAY!!!! Getting my copy asap!

Thumbs up. I absolutely loved this book...couldn't put it down, can't wait for the sequel :)

Kept me in anticipation. Even though the book is not very realistic, it is very well written and very captivating.

Boring. All over the place and hard to understand.

Midnight and the Meaning of Love. Loved, loved, loved it!!!! I hated for this book to end! Sister brings the characters to life and the world a little closer. It makes us reflect, promotes a healthy respect for Islam, and reinforces unconditional love. Some of the incidents seemed so authentic and real, while others made you want to explore other places; it was a tale of adventure, love , trust and discovery. it did the job of entertaining, educating and encouraging....cant see how anyone wouldn't like it.

😍. A book that makes you want to change yourself is a great book. Beautiful

Good..but. I loved this story! I couldn't put it down I actually live Midnight he is a strong man. After reading The Coldest Winter ever I don't really see the connection maybe because he was like 15 at the end of this and in his 20s in the other novel. I was just convinced reading this that his fam had money he was paid in just brought property and got a new wife things were good. But then the coldest winter ever was like he didn't have anything he claimed to have here. Other than that I loved it just wish it didn't presequel!

Talk 2 much. I will read part 2 becuz I gotta know wat happens. But this book has too much talking n carrying on about nothing found myself Flipping pages just 2 get2 the meat of things .a lot of things she could've left out.

A bomb of much needed knowledge. I want to personally thank Sister Souljah for this book. I have felt this way about my people for a long time love them to death but never understood their actions. This book breaks it down to the essence and only clarifies what has been said so many times in so many different ways of the effects that this country has had on our men and our woman. Midnight is the epitome of a man he is what our men could and would have been if they had culture. This book has opened up my eyes, soul, and spirit again. I look at my husband in a different light and myself as a wife. This is more than a book. Should be listed in the self help category. An abundance of knowledge. And an appreciation of a culture that so many people frown upon.

Fantastic!. This is a page turner. I can't wait for the next in October. Hoping for more to come from her!!!!

Coachdee1. Very well written. Great attention paid to detail.

Page Turner. It’s hard to put into words how much I love this book. It is a page turner and if your looking for a book unlike any other , check it out. She is truly a gifted writer , not many people can write about the inner city with out depicting us as illiterate or less than lady like.

Deep. Midnight is fascinating and one of the greatest male characters of all time. A young man cut from a different cloth and out most leagues. A classic from Souljah!

Midnight. Awesome raw real I felt more of a man reading this book.

wow. This is a book that you will find youself not able to put down. i skips meals and stayed up for hours to read. i enjoyed this book so much and it is a must share book.

Midnight. I think this is the worse book ever. How dare Sister Souljah write a book depicting our people as like the lowest form of man kind. There is good and bad in everyone and she chose to write about the worse in our people. As far as I'm concerned Midnight was a sellout. He chose a Japanese girl whose people thought if you were not Japanese then you were less than. They felt that they were superior to every other race. Our people were robbed of our identity, homes, belief, dignity, family, name it we were robbed of it. We were robbed of those things at the aid of our own people helping to capture us into slavery. Then you would write a story of a little boy coming to America at such a young age without the company of his father and give him so much credit like he would not have been consumed by the same temptations that make some of our people who they are today. You really have some kind of imagination. I am so offended by this book. What is wrong with you, who, give the impression that you care so much for your people. According to these two Midnight books you don't think much of us. Furthermore, he was a murderer, tax evader, and very judgmental. I think you are a great writer but, you made some bad decisions. Despite the fact that I did not care for The Coldest Winter Ever. I really loved "A Deeper Love Inside" it had a great ending. We have great black American people and if you write about them I think your audience would be captivated just the same with your imagination. Keep writing just do it different, not according to your imaginary African boy.

MOVIE PLEASE!. I DID NOT want this to end!! They should DEFINITELY make this into a movie!! PLEASE!!!

Good and Tough Read. This book is good I wish it was more of an young adult story and doesn't start off as him being a kid . Like most of the book he's fricking 14 I mean it's good just really hard and tough to get seriously into and evert time I do I get easily distracted it took me awhile to read

Opens life treasure. True love, they have dominated and conquered LOVE! All that matters is how they feel about one another. Great read and anticipating book two!

Midnight a must read. I was so into this book I did not put it down until I had read it cover to cover. I am left with a few unanswered questions like what ever happens to his dad? But maybe I will get my answer in the follow up book! Can't wait to read it!

Midnight: A Gangster Love Story. I found this book to not only have a one-dimensional storyline but it also a protagonist who is one-dimensional, as well. The content seemed to be repetitive throughout the majority of the text. Lastly, while Sister Souljah's "The Coldest Winter Ever" was well written, this novel falls short.

Enjoyable Read!. I just couldn’t stop reading this book. I highly recommend this book to the fullest!👍🏽👍🏽😊

Midnight. I enjoyed this novel much better than The Coldest Winter Ever because although Midnight was egotistical he still had redeeming qualities. I enjoyed his love and description of Sudan and it's people, although it was sometimes nostalgic instead of realistic. I also liked that this young man wasn't afraid to love and show it. I want more! I want to know what happens to Bangs, Akemi, and Sudana? What really happen to his father? How does this boy end up as the ex-drug dealer in The Coldest Winter Ever?

Not what I expected. I'm so disappointed in this book. The main character Midnight was an arrogant and self-righteous. He is not what I remembered from The Coldest Winter Ever. The book never mentions how he ends up working for Winter's father. Midnight had so many judgements about a group of people but also being a hypocrite. Not a fan of this book and not reading the next one.

Love. I love this book! It's so well written while still being relatable. Ugh, it's just perfection.

Boring !!!!. Not the same Midnight from Coldest winter ever. This book was disappointing. Black girls aren't good enough for this black man..humph

Jen1676. Great read!! I loved how it's spans different continents and cultures. We examine the AA from another perspective.

No words.. I first read this book my freshman year in high school. I may have not fully understood what I was reading but now that I’m older and re-reading this book again has opened my eyes so much more to everything in my life. I have fell in love with this character and fell in love with the religion that’s Islam. This book is a serious life changer and will make you realize the things that are most important in life, how to love, and overcome distractions and fears that life brings you. The whole series is amazing and in my 19 years of reading so many books, this will always be my favorite book.

Changed. After reading this book I looked at myself in the mirror. Young men can learn alot from midnight, strong values, discipline, and family values. I look forward to the upcoming novels.

Really..... So I'm still confused as to how Midnight became an arrogant Muslim ninja. This book had no clear plot and was poorly written. Aside from the belief system everything else was unbelievable. I literally spent a day and a half reading about a fourteen year old wanting to play house in his mothers house with a girl two years older that couldn't speak english. Not only does the story line stray from who you would have thought Midnight was from "The Coldest Winer Ever", you get no clear explanation on how he came to even have the slight role in that book. From a character so judgmental of others and what he deems wrong, how does he become a drug dealer? Whatever happens to his family since Santiaga says he has no family? Then in the part two he's a super ninja traveling to Japan ? I mean really come on now. This book was just bad! If you can read a book with no clear story line with out irritation, or read about underage sex between middle schoolers pretty much without feeling weird, and or even read about how inferior everyone is to Africans and Muslims this is the book for you.

Great read. The coldest winter was the first novel that I had ever read in my life. I couldn't put the book down. Now that I have free time I have decided to read midnight and might I add, it is a great read. Some times I have to force myself to stop reading because it's so interesting.

Disappointed. It's started good and kept me intrigued but how it ended was terrible. I loved how she hinted to the Santiago family but never really explained how he got with Ricky. Hopefully the next book will give answers.

Yessir. Being Muslim and having African family and friends; this book was right on point. I love it!!!! My favorite book no doubt.

The Best..... This is my second time reading this book. You won’t be disappointed.

O_o is this suppose to be the same "Midnight"?. Sigh. Just sigh.

Absolutely worth reading!!!. I have to come to truly enjoy reading everyone one of sistah souljah's extremely well written novels. All her books are undeniably thought provoking. I almost feel like I am watching a movie when I read her books. I can't wait to read her next novel!!

Great Read as a stand alone, disjointed as a prequel. As a stand alone book, this was a great read. It kept me turning the page and I was intrigued by the development of the characters. However, it was not at all what I expected. As a prequel to the coldest winter ever, I was surprised to get to the end with no link between the 2 stories. Granted it has been several years since I read Coldest Winter so I may have missed the subtle connections. Portions of the love story seemed to me improbable, but still enjoyable. The biggest personal take away for me from this book was the main characters devotion to his beliefs, which made me very introspective while reading. Overall I enjoyed the story telling and delving into the inner thoughts of Midnight and I would recommend this book.

Princess. My fav book hands down!!!

Great Read!!!. The story of Midnight's beginning is excellent. The book could definitely be made it into a movie. Sister does it again!!!

Great book but not from here.. I purchased this book because I wanted to finish reading it. This book is not complete it has chapters in the wrong place and incomplete chapters. The book is great just not from iTunes.

Great. Wonderful book.! Definitely recommend ppl to purchase this book!!!!!!

Amazing. As a girl, I was a little afraid that this book might not be made for me seeing that it was narrated by midnight and I couldn't relate to him at all. But I was wrong. It was an amazing book and written beautifully!!! It's a must read for anyone

MIdnight. This I found was the best book in the series, compared to the Coldest Winter Ever. I love sister souljah and thank her for writing stories that make you feel as if you are living with midniht and winters themselves.

Good Read. Winter was even better!!!!

Amazing!. Love Sister Souljah! This book is amazing and full of wisdom!
