The best. My all time favorite novels!

All souls trilogy. I love the character, this was a great read. Immediately got the second and third book. And I was so happy to find out they have a show on Sundance!!!

Captivating Story!. I liked this book at least as much reading it the 2nd time as I did the first go around. I found Diana to be a wonderful character, and it was interesting to see her realize the power she held as a witch. Matthew was also great, and I loved how protective he was toward Diana. The story was fast paced and completely captivating. I enjoyed the way the story took us from Oxford, to France, and then to New York. When Diana calls up a volume from Oxford's Bodleian Library, she is suddenly in the cross hairs of witches, of which she is one, daemons, and vampires. Danger seems to follow in her footsteps. Thee manuscript she viewed seems to be tied to her parents' death when she was only seven years of age, and it appears that they spellbound her for her protection shortly before that. Even though the different types of non humans don't normally mix together, soon Diana is falling for and being protected by Matthew, an ancient vampire. As they try to puzzle out what is going on, Diana finds that she wields more power as a witch than she ever dreamed. This story was delightful and very well written. It had superb characters, a very intriguing storyline, and settings that enhanced the story. All of these elements come together to create a book that is unique and exciting.

A Discovery of Witches. This was a great read very well written just loved it.

Eh. No

MuVtw. H halg McGuire 296296yeah Is

wonderful book. love it love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️💟💟💟💟 amazing

Boring and excessive detail. First 500 pages were so boring and could have been summed up in 50. The book was very detailed at points that did not need immense detail like when Matthew and Hamish were at the lodge. The parts that needed more explanation were poorly executed and confusing at times. Overall not as good as people make it out to be and I don’t know how it got turned into a TV show.

Review: All Souls Trilogy 1: A Discovery of Witches. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness is the first book in her All Souls Trilogy . The sensationally magical story of an American witch with no desire for her powers and the centuries old vampire that irrevocably changes her life. Diana Bishop is a witch with limited skill and prefers to think of herself as the scholar she is. Focused on historical Alchemy, she journeys to Oxford for work and somehow manages to get her hands on a magical manuscript. Unbeknownst to her at the time, it is a highly coveted, most sought-after, and elusive tome that no one has seen in centuries only to have her call it from the archives of the Bodleian with ease. Matthew Clairmont has been searching for this book for centuries believing it to be a book of origins of the vampire, witch and daemon species and hoping it has answers to why all the species are dying out and losing power. Learning that a young and inept witch has managed to call the text forth from the archives and going to investigate is a life-changing event for him. Diana Bishop is everything his ancient soul never knew it needed and despite how badly he tries to deny his attraction to her their relationship evolves. But with an ancient like Matthew there are secrets - he has lived a hundred lifetimes and has a hundred lifetimes of secrets - but the depth of some of what he keeps from Diana may break them before they even have a chance to explore the bizarre dynamics of a witch and vampire relationship. Addictive! This series is quite possibly as addictive as Matthew's attraction to Diana! Now also a wonderful TV series on Sundance Channel, I was blown away with how entranced I was with these characters. The main characters, the secondary characters, the world-building. Definitely one of my best reads of 2019! Enjoy!

A discovery of witches. This book is by far a good beginning of a trilogy. If you like witches, vampires, spells, and time travel you got to read it.

👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿. This was the most amazing trilogy I have ever read

READ THIS. Ok..it is a good story. Great characters, interesting plot line... He trouble with the book is he author's inability to pace the novel. The story is essentially all about uncovering secrets. Yet, every time a secret is bout to be exposed, the heroine 1) can't take it emotionally and needs to rest. 2) can't take it physically and needs to rest. 3) has dealt with too much today already and decides to wait a couple of weeks before bringing it up again or 4) just doesn't want to deal with it. Rather than sitting by the edge of my seat waiting for the secret to be exposed, I found myself bored at the filler, and frustrated that the author was essentially dragging the story out.

Intriguing read!. Really enjoyed the book, it was definitely captivating! Great read for anyone into fantasy/mystery/romance type books.

A perfect mix. This book is a cross between Harry Potter, Twilight, and Outlander - seriously, just as written in a previous review. It has the magical elements of HP and the vampires of Twilight that are almost unbreakable, odd, and beautiful at the same time. The historical components of this book are what really tie this book together. The author uses a wealth of information about the past and some serious alchemy knowledge to create a book that’s wonderful and keeps you up at night just to finish! Purchasing it in the iBooks format was perfect because it allowed you a chance to review what some of the words mean (some of them are archaic, considering it was about alchemy, and needed some further clarification) while still within the book. I absolutely loved the Outlander series and had a hard time finding something comparable, but this comes close! Excited to dive into the next part of this series which I’m sure is bound to consist of more of the elements that really drew me to Outlander. This is a MUST READ.

Intriguing combinations. Intriguing combinations of mystery, science fiction and historical romance. Adding in supernatural and humor...what’s not to love...love...love!

Perfect!. In love with this book, highly recommend for anyone who likes mystery and fantasy

A discovery of witches. Book starts out great but then becomes predictable and silly.

Wonderful!. It really is a great book, it’s like a grown up Harry Potter!

Harry Potter for adults!. Buckle your seatbelt and pay attention to the names and details… it’s a great ride!!!

Lame. I’ll never get those hours of my life back! 😒

Amazing book. Started out a little slow but the more and more I read the more I became part of the story myself imagining I was there with Matthew and Diana

“A Discovery of Witches” earns 5+/5 Grimoires…Compelling!. If you are watching the mini series based of Deborah Harkness’s “A Discovery of Witches” and believe there is no reason to then read the trilogy, you are so terribly mistaken. You will miss out on so much history of the various creatures, insights into the characters background, and descriptions of the various scientific and historical research, buildings and castles, food, and wine…oh, the tastes and fragrances of wine. If you're watching and desire more, or you've not seen the mini series and are just interested, this is the perfect place to begin! After having mysteriously called up Ashmole 782, an old book sought by many over the centuries, Dr. Diana Bishop, descended from an ancient and distinguished family of witches, meets Professor Matthew Clairmont, descended from an ancient and distinguished family of de Clermont vampires. There connection is undeniably strong, but their association is strictly, if not dangerously, forbidden. The complex emotional journey of Diana and Matthew brings to mind the conflicts found between the Capulets and the Montagues...without the blood and magic. Their efforts to uncover the origins and future of their species takes the reader from England to France to Italy pitting family against family and species against species. Watching the mini series together with reading the book has strengthened the visuals in my mind’s eye. It is an extraordinary experience I highly recommend.

One of the best books. I've read in a long time. Fascinating and unusual tale of mystical creatures that does not disappoint.

Terrible. This book is so slow. The amount of secondary characters and extra plot lines was ridiculous. The author somehow manages to make the romantic relationship between the main characters ridiculously fast paced, and yet unbearably boring in the lack of any kind of physical intimacy. This was one of the worst books I’ve read in awhile. I don’t know how this series is so popular and I definitely do not intend to waste anymore of my time by reading the other two books.

Fantastical. A wonderfully spun story that was over detailed at times, but overall an entertaining read.

Page turner!. The best thing about this book is that while reading it you learn about things you would never guess. The story is beautiful and the whole series is just amazing and entertaining

Excellent. Couldn’t stop reading… only wish the serious would have kept more true to the book.

Harry Potter meets twilight saga. It’s as if Rowling and Meyer sat down and wrote a book. As soon as I stopped being judge mental at how sentimental Matthew was over Diana I began to enjoy the book. If you liked Harry Potter and twilight you’ll like this too. If you didn’t like twilight—don’t buy it.

Wonderful. I loved this trilogy when I read it on my own. The audiobook is just as good. The intonation is spectacular. You won’t regret listening to the audio.

This book made me so mad. Why build up a powerful and interesting protagonist only to have her give up everything empowered about her the moment a chauvinistic and controlling vampire shows up to tell her what to do? So frustrating

Brought back joy. Love this book. My sister had recommended this to me for awhile and once I finally sat down to read it I was hooked. It brought back the love I have of reading and I’ve missed it so much. Deborah Harkness has a true talent and I can’t wait to finish the series and find more authors like her.

So boring.... It is just so boring. The characters and the setting, hell even the creatures are boring. She makes demons boring. Which is pretty impressive in itself.

Loved this book. This book is from one of my favorite series of all time. Beautifully written.

Spellbinding. Great from start to finish. Looking forward to the next book!

Urban fantasy for grown ups. Good Urban fantasy with a little sophistication and an academic angle. While while the story revolves around a forbidden romance, it's not a romance novel. -- nor is it graphically oversexed; the book doesn't need it to keep one engaged. I appreciate the history and bits of information from my reading that stick in my head as they make shallow conversations at cocktail parties more interesting ... Lol. I look forward to enjoying the rest of the series and hope the author continues in this genra; she has a gift for it.

My favorite!. I’ve read this book/series 3-4 times now - it’s my “comfort book(s)” and they are all fantastic! I can’t wait for Book 5 to release next year!

😍❤️. Wonderful

Slow starting off, but ending is great!. Booked was very detailed. Almost hard to get the the story with all the details. But then it all ties together where you needed to know about these details. The second book in the trilogy is 5 stars. Great imagination and love the characters.

A Discovery of Witches. I don’t know how I would of felt if I read this before starting the series on television. Teresa Palmer epitomizes Diana Bishop and together, they brought the whole story home. I have read all three books of the trilogy and almost finished Time’s Convert. The story and its’ telling in written and visual form is compelling and I couldn’t put them down. The second film series has started production this summer 2019 and I can’t wait for more.

Fantastic Through Every Page. I could not put this down for a full weekend (poor neglected fam), but for good reason! Its been a long while since a book interested me this much, and I know it will be a book I read again. I would 100% recommend anyone into magical fantasy books read this.

My favorite book series in ages!!!. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Astonishing. Wow what a world Deborah Harkness plummets you into when you read this book. She does an outstanding job at combining science, history, and otherworldly ideas. The main character, Diana, is very easy to connect to and I found myself relating to her more and more the further I read. I am in complete awe of the storyboard this author has created, the connections the characters the capture of it all in its essence is outright astonishing. Ever so slightly a surprising twist in the plot or an emotional scene would tug at the heart stings just enough to make you feel as though you are connected by your “third eye”. This is definitely a book I’ll be keeping on my shelf. Belonging just between Harry Potter and The Vampire Diaries.

Couldn't Put It Down. Enthralling

Meh.... This is like Twilight for a middle aged cat lady. I thought it would be more of an adventure story but it is mainly an irritating romance story. A really controlling and moody vampire falls in love with a narcoleptic witch - I guess because she smells good or is really powerful despite not knowing how to use her magic yet? I mean it isn’t ever clear why they fall in love - it is clearly more a fantasy about some handsome, tall guy finding someone similar to the author irresistible at first site. And then carrying her around because she is always so exhausted or fainting. The weirdest part is is that the supposedly strong main female character is perfectly contented to let the vampire plan and direct her in practically everything, not even including her in their grand escape plan. There is never a reason given for this and it just seems super odd. I didn’t like either of the main characters- they were just selfish and annoying. And not nearly enough action, intelligence, etc. in the plot. Not even enough of a history lesson! So boring. Will not bother with the rest of the series.

Enjoyed this book. It was a good ready

Captivating work. I worried at the length of the book that I wouldn’t be able to get through it. But it captured me and I flew through it and am going to finish the trilogy.

Amazing book. This book will keep u on ur toes when u think I got other plot figured out it changes this book is a great mix of vampire and witches and even daemons a must read for anyone who likes the super natural

Compelling for sure, but.... ...the author seems to have read the Twilight series a few two many times and taken it as vampire gospel. Apparently it is historically accurate that there are good vampires which abstain from killing good people and who fall desperately in love at a moment's notice.

Oh no. I've never written a review before but I just had to for this book. The first 200 pages are amazing, I read them in 3 hours, but after that the storyline is miserable. It turns from captivating to twilight with record speed. Actually worse than Twilight... DO NOT GET ATTACHED TO THIS BOOK! The storyline goes in even more directions than this terrible review (I apologize) and after recommending it to all my friends I had to call them up embarrassed and apologize for how bad it is. If you want another vampire romance then go ahead, but it honestly left me nauseated and empty, wanting my time back. Please just don't buy this, just don't.

So BORING and repetitive. this book is SO BORING I feel like it repeats itself so many times I have read so many books in my life, good and bad, and this is the first book I could not bring myself to finish. The writing is so blunt and to the point, almost no detail at all “and we kissed” “then we went here” “then we went there” the dialog was the only thing that broke up the monotony of what felt like a never ending shopping list. No detail, the characters are very one dimensional and their faults RULE them. This is one of the most frustrating books I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying to struggle through. The only way it is like twilight is that there are vampires, nothing else. Nothing is explained, the main character is a know it all and it’s so bad. She’s frustrating and weak. I’ve never written a review before but I feel like I HAD TO for this book.

Wonderful Book. I loved it! Cannot wait for the second book!

The Discovery of Witches. I bought this book after reading several reviews in various publications, and was pleased that I did. I have just read some of the recent reviews on this site and had to smile. I have always understood that when you read fantasy, to really enjoy it, you must "suspend disbelief". I can't believe that those reviewers did that. Does every story of a vampire have to be compared to the "Twilight Saga"? Please, give me a break, the characters are adults, and the historical references put this in a whole different category. I would recommend this book to any one who likes history and fantasy, it stands on its own merits. I look forward to the second part of the trilogy, and have already preordered my copy.

A Discovery of Witches. This book receives its second star only because somehow it kept me reading. I was so annoyed at times I laughed out loud asking "you've got to be kidding me. ". The character development was not great, the story lines interesting in concept but not well executed. I kept asking myself what I was getting into - was this a romance novel? If your looking for intelligent, thought provoking, well written works keep looking. If you're looking for a simple, slightly interesting fiction this might suit your fancy. I'm disappointed to see its a trilogy as I'd prefer to have it all tied up in 600 pages and be done with it. I felt it was often drawn out and lacked any real depth. If you want to read in 500 pages about the anticipation that mounts when vampire possibly going to kiss witch then you might like it. I like magic. I should have been studying for final exams but instead read a thoughtless fiction.

Love love love. Yes, when I 1st started the read, I knew others would compare it to twilight, love story between the super natural beings, however, it quickly changes course and fills its self with magic & history. It is thought provoking, and the author, a historian herself, really pulls in her knowledge of the past. The 1st book ends with nothing pulled together because it pulls u into the 2nd....... Love the characters, the setting and the storyline. Couldn't stop thinking about this book all day at work...just counting the min before i could return. Just started the second and I can't wait already for the 3rd. Movie rights have been purchased already. Hope you enjoy this fantastic book! I bought it at our Elementry schools book fair based on the amount of reviews behind the cover, pages worth!

Awesome. I really enjoyed this book! I couldn't put it down

I love this book!! <3. One of my favourites ....I’ve read the story twice already.

Discovery of witches. One of the worst books I have read in ages. I only finished because I was on holidays and didn't have access to anything else. Absolutely bland characters - no character development at all. The main character is annoyingly stubborn and self absorbed. There is no real spark to explain the attraction between the two star crossed lovers. Lots of descriptive paragraphs, again without depth, and the monologues between characters was painful. Yawn. Remove the superfluous, fluffy, pointless descriptions and the book would be a quarter in length, but no more engaging. Harlequin romance type drivel.

Awesome book. I love it! I don't understand the people who leave review saying how the character plot was horrible, ok we get it you are a literature snob, go read the dictionary or a thesaurus for christ sakes! Keep on writing Deborah Harkness!

Loved it!. I kind of stumbled upon this book and am not really into the witch vampire thing but I couldn't put it down! I just downloaded the second book and am pumped!

Great book. Great interesting book. Supernatural and historic themes is a good read for everyone.

The Discovery of Witches. I was so excited to read this book after a friend recommended it. I was really disappointed in the end!!! Couple of reasons - 1. Pretty similar to the Twilight saga, including the sexual tension, but no culmination of this in the Discovery book. 2. Seems like book was initially cohesive & going in specific direction, then just exploded into too many substories, not linking everything together by the end of the book.

Inconsistent. Read this book for the second time, and realized that it’s really rather misogynistic. When you meet Diana, you meet someone who is purported to be strong, intelligent, and independent. By the end of the book she is vapid, weak (in contrast to the males in this book), and insipid. So sad, because her character had such potential. If you are looking for a paranormal romance-the equivalent to an adult version of twilight-you’ve found it.

A discovery of witches. A fun story. Little confusing at times but still kept me hooked. Can't wait for second book

Sarah. Absolutely captivating!

Don't pass on this one. I am not a fan of the current vampire/witch craze that I view as this era's Harlequin Romances... This not one of those. This is a very well written and compelling story from a woman who also happens to be a history professor at USC. It is full of accurate historical details and fascinating speculative science. Best book I've read all year.

Discovery of witches. Fantastic book...........waiting for the second part!!

A discovery of witches. Starts off very slow. I almost gave it up for a romance, then it became interesting, but left the meaty part of the story beyond the ending. I hope there will be a sequel...or two.
