God, No! by Penn Jillette Book Summary

The New York Times bestselling reinterpretation of the Ten Commandments from the larger, louder half of the world-famous magic duo Penn & Teller.

A scathingly funny reinterpretation of the Ten Commandments from the larger, louder half of world-famous magic duo Penn and Teller reveals an atheist's experience in the world: from performing on the Vegas strip with Siegfried and Roy to children and fatherhood to his ongoing dialogue with proselytizers of the Christian Right and the joys of sex while scuba-diving, Penn has an outrageous sense of humor and a brilliantly entertaining opinion on, well, anything you care to think of.

Entertaining. Not quite what I thought it would be, but entertaining and well worth it

I laughed, I thought, I gasped. Penn has managed to write a book that is very funny, touching, thought provoking, and in some cases shocking. You'll enjoy reading it no matter what your views on religion. One of the stories should be included as a warning pamphlet with all hair dryers. His writing style is very conversational and familiar if you've listed to his podcasts or have seen him on TV. I can see myself re-reading this book in coming years.

Loved it. I loved your book. You have deadly honesty. Having gone from being a Mormon returned missionary to an atheist I appreciate your book even more. Good for you. Loved your show in Vegas as well!

And now I'm Japanese, so &@!$ off!. When a friend at work told me Penn came out with a book about Atheism (about time!), I knew immediately I had to read it. Hilarious, insightful and heart-felt, it feels like it gives a voyeuristic glimpse into Penns life as he shares intimate short stories of his life and views as an atheist. Although I am bias towards this book, being an atheist and libertarian (and a huge P&T fan ever since my brother got me into them at an early age) I feel it would be a huge disservice to say you have to fall into those categories to appreciate this book. If you enjoy comedy, true stories, great pieces of advice, and awesome quotes you'll be spewing for some time, check out this book! I really enjoyed the writing style i.e. tons of swearing, but everything written just seems so open and honest, from the man whose job it is to "lie and trick you." His candidness makes it feel like you're hanging out with Penn and just listening to him talk, it's just that good. These stories at times will have you hurting in laughter, or getting teary eyed, but from the moment you start reading you won't want to put it down until you finish. Thank god I am an atheist.

Not Bad.. I agree with about half of what Penn says. The book is entertaining and I enjoyed his stories but despite being an agnostic of sorts I still believe there is more evidence for the existence of god than not.

I Really Like This Penn Jillette Guy. I can listen to Penn Jillette ramble on for hours about anything, which is pretty much what he does in ‘God, No!’. I think the anti-religious marketing of this book may have been over emphasized. There are some classic quotes for sure, but nothing that will induce atheist fist-pumping. The moral to be gained from this book is honesty. Penn Jillette is a sincere, honest man who doesn’t change his personality based on the company he’s in. He sets a great example for how to be human. This book is filled with entertaining examples.

Funny, thought provoking read.. From the first few pages, this book is a great, non-prostelyzing read, which will give the reader plenty of opportunity to see Penn's take on a pretentious world of religious, and political zealots. Whether the reader is atheist or not, one must give credit as this is a thought provoking and humorous view of religion. One may presume that this will be an all out attack on Christianity, but actually looks at all world religions and their absurdities as well as their common good. I was very impressed that while many atheist writings present their view like any reader who does not agree is less intelligent; this does not. A very fast, entertaining book, that I would recommend to any adult reader. For the religious, if your faith is strong enough to endure a well written, thought provoking argument, I commend you. For the non-religious, you will be in stitches with Penn's anecdotes explaining his journey through life not being a god fearing man. At the very least, a reader will finish this book with many laughs, and possibly a few tears from a few tender moments exposing a side of the author not usually seen in his shows. Great book!

Penn's verbal diarrhea. Penn is hit or miss when it comes to skepticism and atheism, and this is a huge miss. I'd say 5% of the book is dedicated to Penn making a relevant point about religion or atheism. So if you were to cut out Penn waxing poetic and bragging about his lifestyle and personal experiences you'd have a pamphlet instead of a book.

Gleen Beck???. If an idiot like Glenn Beck is asked to add a blurb, this is a book to be avoided. Much as I admire the Pennster, his choice of "friends" betrays him.

Poor, poor read. The garbage (dressed up and sugar-coated, but nonetheless garbage) spit forth in this book only makes me sorry for the author. Don't waste your time.

Freedom!. Gotta love the 1st Amendment.

Wow!. For those of you who said you didn't like this book, did you actually read it?? It is a beautiful masterpiece! I guess not a book for people who cannot think on their own. Besides if you believe in God and you read a book entitled God, No! And know its by Penn Jillette who is a well known atheist then you are just doing it to rant and rave that someone doesn't share your small minded ignorant opinions of life and what its about. Sorry run on sentences... Haha! Anyway, give this book a read. Its excellent!

Great; Not all believers in a Creator are without evidence.. I want to respond much more (I pretty much agree strongly with everything), but there is not enough room in this review to express how much I've learned to admire and respect you.

Engaging. A well written, sensible, funny at times, thought provoking, interesting read. I couldn't put it down.

Love it!. Great read for anyone who is an atheist or has ever questioned their faith!

Dont WASTE your time. I feel sorry for the author not believing in God. I also feel that just because he doesnt believe in God, that he feels so small that he has to write trash like this blasting and making fun of God, a total waste of time. Well when the author meets his maker, is judged and thrown in the lake of fire for all of eternity, suffering terribly for all of eternity because he didnt believe in God, it will be too late for redemption no matter how much the author begs for his soul. This book doesnt even make a decent toilet paper, and if there was a zero rating I would have clicked on that.

Excellent Read. Thanks for your honesty, awareness of your human flaws but most importantly giving your thoughts words...and in doing so adding to the vocabulary of those who believe or more directly (don't believe), like you do....Read this book for a humanist perspective of someone living a reflective and thought provoking life...Thanks Penn...the bacon tastes so good!!!

Great.. More people need to express their atheist views. Anyway they can. Celebrities especially. People look up to and respect Celebrity. Thanks Penn!

Thought provoking, entertaining read. Fun to read and laced with unique, bold thoughts

Crashes. I've been looking forward to this book however it keeps crashing after trying to open. Crashes on my IPad 2 as well as my iPhone 4. Please fix so I can read this great mans words.

Great Book. Great book written by a good friend. I may not see eye to eye with everything written, but hey, this is America and I don't have too!

An honest and excellent read, atheist or not. Of all the things that can be said about Penn, that he's honest about his beliefs has to be said first. This book is an open and often brutal look at his beliefs, life, and what shaped both. You don't have to agree with everything he says, but reading it lets you understand why he believes it. And in a lot of cases, why you should believe it too. I'd particularly call out the chapter about the deaths of his parents and sister. It's raw, pure, and heartbreaking. And if it doesn't make you tear up a little, you might be dead. The only knock on the book is length. The last few chapters feel shorter than the start, and you are certainly left wishing for more.

Great Read. As a jew who became an atheist, I found this book to hit home on so many different levels. The book approaches religion with humor, thought, and plenty of bacon. It's a must read for anyone who questions or has questioned their faith like I did. The question Penn asks at the beginning of the book sums it up nicely...please read!

Horrible book. Worst book ever! Just rember you asked for it

Funny, insightful, truthful. Penn’s sense of humor and honesty is refreshing. And his logic and reason for not believing in god are so true.

Buy it!. Love it! Buy a copy for everyone you know and love!

Entertaining and irreverent. This book reads like you're in the room with Penn, and he's gotten on a roll and is telling some of his favorite stories. He's going on a bit too much about something some of the time, but he's always fun to listen to. If you like Penn Jillette's other projects, you'll have a good time reading this. I was inspired to get this by listening to him on the Nerdist podcast, and it feels very similar to that appearance. He's a guy who is speaking candidly, admitting he's hard to live with, wrapping his head around the things life has thrown at him. He's a raconteur. Even when he's annoying, he's entertainingly annoying. This book is a great read for Penn Jillette's fans, skeptics, and people who know that crude humor can make you think sometimes.

Can't wait!. This will be great.

God no!. I enjoyed the descriptive narrative of this book, the real freedom and the simple true that the author uses during the entire book!

Atheist, No!. I'm not sure if Penn knows the meaning of the words "atheist" and "agnostic." He says that he is an atheist and uses "I don't know" as a catchprase. An agnostic says, "I don't whether there is a God or not" because there is no proof of existence. An atheist says, "There is no God," which is as ignorant and arrogant as saying that there is a God because, once again, there is no proof of existence. I don't believe in God but, if proof was discovered, I would accept it as a matter of fact since it was no longer a matter of faith. Pretty funny book, though.

Everyone likes boobs!. Penn has renewed my faith.... I want to believe, wait that was X-Files...... A seriously fun look at how the world needs to wake up from its religious nightmare as told by a hilarious Sasquatch. I almost pre'd my pants. If you don't read this book at least stop Tebowing.

a fun, fun book. funny, insightful and a great listen/read.

Great book. Don't read that much, but this book Is great!!!! Couldn't stop reading it.

Lakes of fire?. Really, lakes of fire? For eternity? What kind of god does that? Your version of the truth isn't very impressive. It's actually a little silly. Actually, It's complete nonsense. Your god was created in man's image, not the other way around. Arrogance + Ignorance = religion

Excellent, heart felt, and entertaining. I was so excited to read this book and I wasn't disappointed. I have to say I just about agree with everything Penn says, and I loved his colorful and vivid stories about his life and experiences being an atheist. Most of all, I love his passion, whether I always agree with him or not. His underlying message and what many writing negative reviews either here or elsewhere seemed to have missed (or maybe didn't even see as I'm guessing most of them didn't read the book) is Penn's observation that life is love. The joy we have in life with our friends, family, parents, and children is what life is all about. There is so much that is wonderful and beautiful about this life and that is what people should focus on. His message is clear: it's not anti-religion, it's pro-love. I, like Penn, believe in people. I believe in the good in people and the love I feel for others and they feel for me. To me, that is much more important than man made-up ideas about what happens to us after this life. Surely this life is worth living and enjoying first? Penn, and myself, definitely think so.

Awesome. I have the audiobook of this and I've listened to it at least 15 times. It's amazingly funny and great.

Loved It. If you're familiar with Penn Jillette, you're familiar with his take-no-prisoners approach to life. This book is like listening to him talk, but with the advantage that you can put it down from time to time. While some of the anecdotes will be familiar to listeners of his much-lamented radio show, there's a lot of really great new stuff here. Don't think of it as just another atheist manifesto. While you'll find the obligatory swipes at the dogmatic, there's a lot of heart and personal experience as well. And funny. Laugh out loud funny.

it will blow your mind!. This guy is just amazing! you will pee your scuba suit laughing ;0)
