Born to Run by Christopher McDougall Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The astonishing and hugely entertaining story that completely changed the way we run. An epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt?

“Equal parts quest, physiology treatise, and running history.... The climactic race reads like a sprint.... It simply makes you want to run.” —Outside Magazine

Isolated by Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons, the blissful Tarahumara Indians have honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury. In a riveting narrative, award-winning journalist and often-injured runner Christopher McDougall sets out to discover their secrets. In the process, he takes his readers from science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra-runners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to a climactic race in the Copper Canyons that pits America’s best ultra-runners against the tribe. McDougall’s incredible story will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

Great Book. One of the best books I have ever read... The worst part being that its now over. I would recommend this book to anyone anywhere regardless if you plan to run or not.

Born to Run. This book is inspirational! Made me love running!

Hmm. I've read so many great reviews about this book but half way through I was bored. I don't know what I am missing..

Born to run. This book changed my life! Thanks Christopher!

Excellent. Great read. A must for every aspiring runner, or fitness enthusiast.

NW. At least the 10th time I’ve read it. It’s the best book I’ve read each and every time.

Excellent blend of storytelling and information. Really enjoyed this book. Although I am not a runner, it kept me engaged and may motivate me to take running more seriously. Thanks!

Great book. Great story. I’m going for a run.. I liked everything about it. I couldn’t stop reading. Great story and written so well I felt like I was there.

Fun Run. Good source of information and very entertaining. The inspiration for free running.

Born to run. Awesome! I was totally hooked, captivated to the very end.

Born to run cut into my running time. This was a book I couldn't put down and a story I didn't want to end. Not just about, but about lifestyle, history, and a group of people from all walks of life.

born to run. I really enjoyed this book. I also am giving it as a gift to my friends who enjoy running. the book was very inspiring and learning the tarahamura indians way of life, culture etc

Love it!!. I am a runner. Once finished this book I almost tore off my shoes and tried to run barefoot for 60 miles. Instead I went to bed (it was midnight), got up the next morning, put on my running shoes, and went for a six mile run. I did have a smile on my face..... Great book!!

Love/hate of running. I loved this book!! The words, the images, and the amazing race. I was hooked from page one and could not put it down. As a Native American runner myself....I appreciate how the story was told. The native people seem like an amazing tribe and this book has me thinking about running away.

My favorite book of all time.. To be honest, I bought this on impulse. I started reading it and finished it in about 3 days. If you like running, are thinking about getting into running, or into stories about adventure, it is a must read. If you’re thinking about reading it, do it!

Good book. Good reading book

Great book!. Run happy! Thats the secret!

One of my favorite books. This book is fun, informative, scientific, and necessary for all people to read.

Running. Ok. I'm running.

Buy this right now. If you put one foot in front of the other, this book is for you. This is a great book if you’re a runner or an inspiring runner. - It’s already made a world of difference for me. If you look at the body it makes sooo much sense, we were made this way and wouldn’t even be here if we weren’t. - The book is great, it reads really fast and easy and is quite addicting, my life pretty much stopped when I picked it up, great author, great stories, priceless advice, worth way more than price. I bought it two days ago and already gifted it twice. I can’t stop talking or thinking about it. Here’s the quickets recap I can come up with: If you want to run natrually, take your shoes off and run, but don’t take my word for it, read this book.

Must Read. I've completed several marathons and I live running so I didn't think reading this would tell me anything I didn't already know. I was feeling a little lost with my running so I decided to finally check it out. I'm sorry I didn't read this when it was first published. Not only is it inspiring to me as a runner but it has now become one of my favorite novels. I've recommended it to everyone I know. I think about some of the little stories from this book often especially while I'm running. Hard to put down!

Informative, interesting, inspiring. A great look at the history of ultrarunning, the personalities and physiologies that make it possible, and a pretty cool story about a one-of-a-kind race. McDougall has enough of a flair for writing to make it all enjoyable and breezy, while diving deep enough to make it an informative read. You’ll want to go back and read it again to stay motivated for your own runs.

Inspirational. My friend recommended me this book as I was training for my first marathon. Going on this journey with the author really opened my eyes to how vast the world of running is and what ultimately matters most in the sport. Definitely recommend this to running veterans and newcomers alike.

Great read!. Great read! Good story with some good tips for running included. Knocked it out in under a week!! (Which is rare for me) Recommended read!!

Worth the trip. Amazing journey, thank you for the opportunity to run along.

Liked it, wish I would’ve loved it.. I’m probably the only person who didn’t give this book 5 stars. I heard a lot of great things about it, but it just wasn’t for me.

Born to Run. Amazing

Born to Run. I've read this book 2 times and I can't wait to read it again.

Born To Run. A great read from start to finish.

Born to run. Been running competitively since 1962 and have seen it all. This book brings it all together in one fabulous race. I like these runners. I'm one of these runners. Ultras strip you down to your truest self, and this book helps you understand that without being there. Good explanation of the truth and logic of minimalist movement. Required reading for all, but especially younger, runners.

Running Should be Free. Even to the last sentence, this book encompasses the life of a runner. Even if that life doesn’t start until later in life. The ultrarunning community is so inspiring, it makes you feel like you can do anything you put your mind to. I highly recommend this book and Scott Jurek‘s Eat and Run; they go hand-in-hand.

Great Read. Loved the book, initially listened to the audiobook. It was intriguing and health conscious. There are so many interesting people out in the world relative to sports and health and finding solutions. Forwarded a few tips to friends and family regarding flat foot and the arch in your feet. Very informative read

Excellent book....great story. Wasn't sure I was going to like it, but soon it became hard to put down... The author does digress a bit with side stories, of each character, but they are also very interesting. Learned a lot about running and evolution and will have me thinking differently the next time I go out for a jog. Very enjoyable, as I love reading about other people's lives that are not mainstream. Wish I could meet some of these people, as I find them all amazing.

A great read for everyone, runner or not.. Full of thought provoking information. Inspiration is cleverly woven throughout the book. I both laughed and teared up while reading. Overall I was left feeling better for having read the book. Highly recommend.

Incredible book. This book is inspiring and powerful. In a world that crowds out the simple and important things like relationships, love, health, and happiness with materialism and laziness disguised as quality of life - this book is a breathe of fresh air and a call to live better and work harder for things that really matter.

What a journey!. This book makes me want to run right through my front door and keep going! The best part was hearing that somewhere out there exist people who have true love/respect of life and humanity. I wish them all the peace and more that their world can offer. Run and have fun!

Best book ever.. Not just the best running book but inspirational and full of great stories. Loved it.

AMAZING!. The books about so much more than just running. I've ran an ultra and two marathons since I've read this inapiring book!

Great. Great narration, couldn't stop reading...

Born To Run. Read it if you like running or are interested in anthropology. I wish pictures were included.

What a great read. Did I think this book was going to make me a great runner? Hardly. I'm 62, doing what I can for those who can no longer do things for themselves. The hook was learning the secret of a Mexican tribe of long distance runners who ran nearly invisible trails nearly barefoot for nearly no reason beyond the joy of running. Then I realized I had stumbled across what really good writing in the 21st century looked like.

Awesome & Inspiring - A Great Read. I've tried to like running and failed many times, always ending with an injury. Many people recommended this book to me over the past couple of years. When my employer sponsored a team to run the Cowtown 5K, I thought what the heck, I'll give it one more try. Got an app on my phone for training and bought this book. What a great story! Very inspiring! I've changed my running style, talked to other runners for advice and I ran my first 5K, no injuries! After reading this book, I've been educated and inspired ... I'm now a runner!!!

Brilliant book!. What an adventure. I just finished reading Scott Jurek's book, so I did need to adjust to a different writing style, but it didn't take long to get drawn into this story involving some pretty amazing people.

Great, Great book.... I thought I was buying a book about running, but I quickly realized I bought an incredible novel about humanity. This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I have read many. The story is not only beautifully written but told with soul and style that is captivating.

Love running. This book helped me understand my love of running, improve my running form, and entertained me along the way! Great read!!!

Inspiring!. Along with the endorphins pumping through my veins because of runner’s high, this book has single handidly pushed me further through inspiration. Great read!

Great tale, never ending trails..... Simply a fantastic must read for anyone who wants to, has or is training for a race. Every page is better than the last and the last leaves you wanting to put on your shoes (or not) and go for a run. This book allows you to feel the wind, the dirt, the sweat, and the exhausted joy that only endurance events can emote. Great read.... I'm off for a run. Mr. McDougall, thank you for this book.

What an enjoyable story!. I loved this story! As a runner that reads a lot about the science of running I still learned lots of new ways to improve my training and discovered new ways to appreciate those tough training days. The story it self was amazing and so much fun to read. I first heard of this race with the Tarahumara in Mexico when I read "Eat Run" by Scot Jurek. It was awesome to get a detailed understanding of how this event came to be. A great read for any kind of runner!

Read it twice!. I read first time absolutely locked into every chapter. Such a great story, had to chew on it a while then go back and read it again. It was even better the second time!

This book is a life changer for runners and non-runners alike!. It will completely change the way you view human movement and, at the same time, periods of inactivity. Read this book, it will change your life.

Born To Run. Amazing. Everyone, runner or not should read this. I would write more but I'm late for a run.

Great read!. I read this on a recommendation from a friend that read it a few years ago and I loved it! Check out the author in his Ted Talks video as well! I really had no interest in the minimal shoe craze either and read this for a good story. Since finishing I have been reading up on barefoot running and forefoot strike stride, so interesting. I have also since heard about "Eat to Run" by Scot Jurek, who is a part of the story in this book.

Best Book in a long time!. Loved this book from beginning to end. The tale is a return to simplicity and how we sometimes over think the simplest things and make the possible seem impossible. With the passing of Caballo Blanco it is even more pertinant of a reminder of how we need to enjoy the moment and the simpler things in life. If you are an athlete in any sport and want a great story you need to read this book!

Winner!. Changed my life - best book I've ever read.

Quel livre inspirant!. Aussi divertissant qu'instructif. Une lecture passionnante qui nous conduit à la découverte d'un grand homme et d'un grand peuple.

Fun!. Great book! Really enjoyed it, makes you want to just go run!

LOVE!. This book was great! Perfect mix of science and story telling. Anyone who can appreciate physical exercise will enjoy this book, and if you don't run already, it will make you want to start!

Born to run. Great !
