Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

BOOK THIEF. I started book yesterday morning. I had nothing to do for day so I sat, in my nightgown, reading. It captured me. I read until 1 am. The my eyes were so blurry from needing sleep, I had to stop. It is a fantastic tale, well carried off. Brilliant narrator.fascinating view of history. Really believable if you accept the narrator. Found it hard to put down. (Obviously). Looking forward to authors other books. It was that good.

Great. This book was recommended to me by my father I thought it was going to be a “dad recommendation” but it was surely a very awesome book

Türkiye. Türkiye best country esketit

Beautifully detailed. This has become one of my all time favorite books ever!! It was completely unexpected, it’s written... I don’t know how to put it into words; written in full color is the best description I have. I recommend it to anyone I know that loves a good book, and would be mandatory lit reading if I had a say :)

Diverting. Borrows an Ingmar Bergman ploy and uses the Grim Reaper as a character. After saying I refuse to read any more about WWII, guess what? This is set in Germany in WWII, but worth making an exception.

Fist book on my list. I don’t usually read books but for some reason I couldn’t peel my eyes away from “ the book thief”. it’s a wonderful story filled with humor and grief. Part of me wished the book never ended but of course everything ends. I recommend reading it, trust me it’s worth the time:)

The Book Thief. Fabulous story extremely well-plotted and well-written. As with all great art, not only does the message inspire with its passion, but it also unlocks insight and understanding... and like all timeless art - the medium is fresh, inventive and entertaining. The autor does things with the English language that will inspire young readers to take a new interest in how writing can shape their world. This book will be a classic.

Wow. One of the best I’ve read. Every emotion I have came to my surface and I was left stunned (the sum of all my emotions) when I finished it.

Best book I have ever read!. The Book Thief is one of the best books I have ever read in my teenage years! I love the way Markus Zukaus is with his words and metaphors and similes! It’s just perfect! I also love that he has young romantic humor in his book. It enriches the story even more. The book is just plain perfect! The best!

Beautiful and moving. This is a great book and, while it was disturbing at times, was wonderfully writes. My number 1 book this year.

Incredible. This book offers an important perspective on World War 2. A story of devastation, love, loss, and hope. It’s powerful and well written, I can’t recommend it enough.

Beautiful book. I have never read a book that was written with such beautiful vocabulary, and unique ways of describing things, but the vocab isn’t so vast or complicated that you can’t understand or it becomes boring. It’s perfectly descriptive. It’s based in WWII and I’m a sucker for historic fiction that’s accurate like this. It’s narrated by Death, and I haven’t seen that in a book before and it give it a melancholic mood when he speaks outside the storyline. If you want your heart ripped out I highly recommend

Best and worst story ever. This is my favorite book about loving words and reading and growing up and surviving. The story is masterful, the descriptions uniquely beautiful, and Liesel is just painted just perfectly as a young woman who loves the right people and things.

It steels your heart and fortifies your soul. I felt more like I was imbibing in this book, it’s characters, real and the best of humanity in the worst of times.

Good and has a really good lesson. I loved this book well at first I was a little confused but then I got the message and excepted it for what is was.

Great book. Interesting story, intrigue, supence, Enjoyable and highly rated.

My favorite book of all time.. The book thief has been and probably will be my favorite book of all time. This book has so many amazing moments. Not only in the story line but in the words. It has this way of making you feel like you are in the book seeing everything. The way the words are placed and said is a magical thing that is a very rare talent. This book is amazing and everyone should read it.

Great book!!. I love to read and this is the best book i was reading it for a class project and just fell in love with it although it says some naughty wordsit is still a great book

I don’t get what’s going on. It’s just flying all over the place

A must read!!!!. Words cannot simply convey how much I enjoyed reading this book. It was recommended to me by a local sports station radio host Craig Miller. His passion for the book and the sports tie in compelled me to purchase and read this wonderful piece of art. There were times I found myself cheering the Washington boys on as if I were right there with them and at other times I found myself weeping because of the hardships. This is a wonderful piece of art and if you are looking for a story of perseverance, brotherhood, teamwork and love of family then look no more. Well done Daniel!

One of my favorites. Loved this book. The writing style is different and the story is captivating. Each time I read it I pick up things I missed before. Worth the read.

My favorite book. It is so good!

Sad, yet great!. Heads up, the book uses some metaphors, but not the hardest metaphors. The ending is sad. I do recommend to read the prologue, and epilogue. But I can say this, I loved it, and I could have made a small river with the tears.

Nothing short of a masterpiece. To start off, I just got done reading this book at 12 AM and the first thing I said when I finished was Wow. Just. Wow. The way this book was written made you feel so much like you were in the book with the characters and related to their emotions in a way that I have NEVER experienced with another book before. I have never really written a review before for anything like apps or books or movies until I finished this book. The SECOND I finished this I wanted to let other people know to not miss out by skipping this book. I personally try to find the best and most popular books out there like Harry Potter or the hunger games but this book was an unexpected treasure. I will tell everyone I know who likes to read to get this book ASAP. So all in all, if you are looking for an outstanding book to either read for yourselves or assign to your students THIS IS YOUR BOOK!!! Read it and trust me, you will not regret it in the slightest.

The Toll of Fascism. Markus Zusak takes on what it means to be German, Jewish, a child, and human. In most instances these definitions are exclusionary rather than inclusive. In the same way that a mountain cannot be a lake, a Jew cannot be German. Zusak challenges the other-ization of being through his pairings of Liesel with many of the other characters. Contrasting and linking their respective losses and hopes. The hope in particular lures the reader in deeper looking for a happy ending. Dreams, however, are always deferred when they run up against the weight of reality. Moreover, the embodiment of death as the narrator is a clear mechanism that Zusak uses to hammer home the reality of life and loss from the beginning. Additionally, Zusak explores the power of words to transform our circumstances and free us from captivity and struggles. To that point, each book in Liesel’s collection bears special meaning to the respective characters and the plot. While all of those factories worked for me in the book a number of things didn’t. The narrator seemed like an inventive but forced choice beyond the first couple of chapters. The book would have progressed more fluidly if it we simpler and more to the point. I also felt the ending was rushed for all the buildup before it. Lastly, the pacing at the beginning through the middle was draining. The book could have been half as long and twice as good.

LOVED IT. This is by far one of my favorite books of all time

Life changing. The narrator is death itself. That should tell you that this book is like nothing you’ve ever read before. The book has a very morbid mood, and I’m warning you, you will cry. But no matter how much you don’t like depressing books, you have to read The Book Thief. It will not only change your perspective on World War II and the Holocaust, but also life itself. It is just so beautifully written with so many important themes, it’s no wonder that it will go down as one of the best books ever written. Interesting and hauntingly beautiful style, amazing characters, heart wrenching story, it really is a perfect book.

Grownups. Don’t be put off by the YA genre. I’m no YA but was thoroughly enthralled by this book.

Book Thief review by Sydney. This book makes you think in many ways, I don’t really know how to explain it, but it is definitely the best book I’ve read so far. I agree with the book thief, words are the worst and the best thing in the world, I love and hate them at the same time. Words hold so much power, if you know how to use them.

One of my favs. This book was a favorite growing up.

Book Thief. Haunting...as in it stays with you. Work of art!

It was a good book. It was a golly good book

Gripping. This book was excellent. I found myself thinking of the characters throughout my day. What an interesting and intriguing way to tell a story. superb!

My Favorite Book. I remember picking up this book off the bookshelf in my moms classroom when I was in sixth grade. I had heard a little about it, and it sounded like an interesting story. I’m so glad I did. This story remains my favorite book. It is beautifully written, and the use of Death as the narrator- it’s incredible. As much as I love and treasure this book, I do have to say it is not for everyone. Many think it is a little slow, and they are correct- but the story is just so beautifully told, I was captivated. If you are a fan of historical fiction, 100% recommend. If not, I still suggest you give it a chance.

Wonderfully Unique. Artful and unique arrangement of structure, prose, flow, and presentation.

Wow. Amazing

5 stars. The book is amazing. I’ve never read a book like this before.

The Book thief. My 80 year old mom told me about this book and said it was on her favorite list After reading it is now on my favorite list also p2w4

Beautiful. This is one of those jewels about WW2. Beautifully written an very worthwhile. Although I would truly liked to see a little more action. But don’t let that keep you from reading it.

The book thief. Wonderfully written. Unforgettable story. A story I will treasure.

Thieving !!. Wonderful story & an easy read with bits & touches of sadness !! I bet YOU can’t read this book without laughing out loud AND crying at least once !! 5 Stars but only cause they don’t have 6 !! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Hauntingly Beautiful. A book narrated by Death is sure to make you cry, but The Book Thief is on a whole new level of well-developed characters and git-wrenchingly sad scenes, coupled with beautiful writing featuring asides with Death’s thoughts on humanity. One of my absolute favorites.

worth it. This took me quite a while to read. It's not a page turner but the slow burn is 100% worthwhile. The middle or last third all the way to the end is great, my only regret is not giving more attention to the beginning, i could have enjoyed it a lot more because I adored the characters and the whole story line and the last few chapters had me bawling. I love feeling so connected, I didn't want it to be over. I'm not really interested in history, if you are great, if you're not, this book is still a truly fascinating read.

One of my favorites. I cry every time

One of the best. I’ve read multiple books set in WW2, but this one will always stand out. The unique personification of Death as the narrator really adds something. Through the book, the characters develop so well, and you can’t help but love them. Not to spoil the ending, but that’s why the end hits so hard. I love how much Zusak focuses on the power of words. Because words really do have meaning, and this book shows that quite well. It’s just an all around book that deserves a spot on the top bookshelf with the rest of your favorites. Beautiful storytelling, beautiful characters, and just a beautiful story about one the darkest times in history.

Exceptional. I want to read it again and again.

Excellent. A truly captivating book that allows the reader to have a deep connection with the characters. I personally liked “Mama”, so harsh, so cold, yet so loving and caring. Excellent book that will carry you through a girl’s life through death’s writing. Beautiful book. Highly recommend.

You must read this book!. I both loved and hated this book. It was so heartbreaking but it got you thinking about the war and how truly horrible it was. It is a must-read, but be prepared to cry at the end. This book is beautifully written and unlike anything I’ve ever read.

Loved it!. This is by far one of my favourite books. The story is moving, touching and breathtaking!! The way the book is written and the style is unique and beautiful. I would totally recommend this book to anyone who want to be involved in a new and unique story , and experience any kind of emotions and feelings!

Brilliant book. I am an avid reader, but cannot recall the last time a book had such an effect on me. This is such a beautiful story. I felt like I was right there, experiencing the whole story first hand.

Amazing!. This book is clever and very insightful as it looks at an unconventional family in Nazi Germany that harbours a Jew for a time during WWII. The book is fantastic and I recommend it to everyone.

Good. I really enjoyed this book and also the movie. Great stuff.

The Book Thief. Excellent, well-written, thought provoking, heart wrenching, moving story of survival, bravery, and self-preservation during a time of adversity and racial and religious bias. It's a culmination of the bonds of familial love and friendship, love of self and coming of age. It's a must read for teens and adults both. This story will touch you at the very core of your being.

The Book Thief. Awesome read, touched me in many ways. A story I will remember for a long time.

The Book Thief. Excellent! Superbly written.

amazing. read for school but really enjoyed the unique writing style and perspective. brilliant.

Highly recommended and deeply moving. This book is Brilliant Painful Artful And illuminating. If you are looking for an insightful and meaningful read, this is an excellent choice. However, gentle reader, be prepared for the pain that is used to help shape and improve your understanding. Suffer from it, but learn from it, and evolve as a result. A deeply moving and highly recommended book, featuring an exploration of morality rather than a mere moral.

The Book Thief. Mr. Zusak has written a pretty good book, from the perspective of a young child in Nazi Germany at the height of the war. He offers insight into various people's lives at the time-people not often spoken of in WW 2 novels. The working class Germans, the children, the older males, who get conscripted late in life, when the Nazi downturn in Stalingrad decimated the Wermacht are all described in detail, providing a very realistic portrait of what life in a neighbourhood in Munich would have been like at the time. Also, the atrocities faced by the Jews are presented in sickening detail. The vast majority of the book deals with the German family dealing with harbouring a Jew-which was obviously the most risky proposition imaginable-punishable by a fate worse than death. Zusak does a good job of portraying the breathless, hopeless, and also the few joyful moments experienced by two families and their children. I found this to be a very moving piece of work,,that was very likely relived over and over at the time, by so many unfortunate people.

Must read.. Great book!

Rough start but strong finish. Took a few tries to really get into it. I wasn’t a fan of the writing perspective in the beginning but stayed for the characters. The ending was perfect for the context of the rest of the story.

Error. I have bought this book on ibooks but when I try to download it, it does not. Someone help me!

Love it. I love it! If you didn't read this book you have to read it! words cant describe how much I love love this book!📚📚📚📚📚

😍😭😱. Best book ever! And the movie is the best movie ever! I'm only 12 and I know it's amazing!!!!!

The Book Thief. This book was one of the most gripping and touching novels I have ever read. I laughed and cried over this book and it is easily in my top 5 best books ever read. Cannot say enough good things about this novel!!

The Book Thief. Of the many books I've read about those who lived through the horrors of WWII this has been, by far, the most moving. We rarely get such a view of the people of Germany, especially children, who lived the nightmare created by Hitler. Written from the point of view of the angel of death, this biography of a girl named Liesl, describes the struggles, the emotions, the joys and the devastation lived by a child who should have been playing without fear and planning a future. I call this a biography because Liesl is only too real. I wish I had met her many years ago. But my wish is more than for myself. This book would help so many people out there to understand that we are all the same in our struggle to survive and find happiness where we can. Liesl teaches us that hatred is useless. She helps us understand that life is more than following the beliefs taught us by others but that understanding those beliefs and where they come from and living by what we know is right is essential. Kindness, not hatred; giving as well as taking; tolerance and understanding rather than blame; knowledge, not ignorance; life lived well. These are Liesl's lessons. I'm so glad she reminded me of these and hope others will realize them too.

My favourite novel of all time. I loved this novel. I had a hard time putting it down. Loved the narrator and how he carries the reader through the story. I also became attached to the characters. I laughed and wept through this novel. I will read it again and recommend to all!

LOVE. One of my all time favourite books...a "must read" book!

Great book!. I couldn't put the book down! I highly recommend this book.

The actress. I'm so proud to say that the actress is a quebecoise!!!! She's perfect! Great book also.
