Praise for The Passage

“[A] blockbuster.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Mythic storytelling.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Magnificent . . . Cronin has taken his literary gifts, and he has weaponized them. . . . The Passage can stand proudly next to Stephen King’s apocalyptic masterpiece The Stand, but a closer match would be Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: a story about human beings trying to generate new hope in a world from which all hope has long since been burnt.”—Time

“The type of big, engrossing read that will have you leaving the lights on late into the night.”—The Dallas Morning News

“Addictive.”—Men’s Journal

“Cronin’s unguessable plot and appealing characters will seize your heart and mind.”—Parade

The Passage. Great book, but be prepared for dissapointment when you don't know the ending after all that reading. Had I known, I would have made a different selection.

What a great book. I absolutely loved this book. Great from beginning to end. I love how the story unfolds and keeps you coming back for more. It was difficult to put down. Way to go Justin.

Too much detail and backstory. I enjoyed the overarching plot of the story. What made it unenjoyable for me was the immense amount of detail and backstory. Now I love long books, but the first 40% of the book could have been significantly condensed and still got the point across. A lot of the time it felt like TOO much detail and backstory was given that ultimately didn’t do anything for the story.

Horrible novel. Poorly written, unbelievable scenarios, one dimensional characters. One of the worst pieces I've ever had the misfortune to read.

Great book. Long but one of my favorites!

FANTASTIC!. Began reading not knowing what the book was about- I love it! The dialogue, the perspectives, the world, the characters, everything!!

Good but unnecessarily long. I could describe this as not a book but a collection of back to back stories. Or, not a movie but a tv series. The story is interesting and the writing is skilfull. The writer clearly has a vivid and detailed imagination. But, especially some parts halfway through are just too long to care to read. It shouldn't take four pages to describe an insignificant detail (I had to power-read / skip a lot of pages). Also, it ends bluntly and I couldn't believe the story didn't actually find a conclusion. I'm sure it would be possible to write the whole story in one or two books and definitely not three. Still, though, some parts, especially somewhere between halfway and the end, are so captivating that you can't put it down when you hit them.

Good but SO long. This was a really good story and very well thought out. Anyone who is into zombie-like stories and post-apocalyptic worlds will like this book. My only critique is that the book is SO long. There is a ton of unnecessary details and character backstories that takes up a lot of space and, to me, was irrelevant to the plot. I also had some unanswered questions that hopefully maybe the rest of the trilogy will address for me. The way the book was written would translate really well into a movie or tv show - which I did recently watch the tv show that Fox put together based on the book, and it is nothing like how the story actually goes.

Great Read. Captures your attention from the beginning, initially with learning about the characters individually-giving little hint at how they relate together, then the story wraps you up in the characters as their places are revealed. The suspense and the detailed story makes it a very hard book to put down.

Tough to Get Through. This book is slooooooow. It takes forever to slog through the beginning and get to the meat of the story, and even then it’s honestly not that interesting. The overall idea is fantastic, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Not horrible, but certainly earns meh status.

New Favorite Author. Omg it's awesome...great read and I love that is more action and fantasy then romance and happy ever after

Blah. Wow, I can't believe that so many have written good reviews, perhaps these are young people. In my opinion, it was poorly written, with basically no character development, and the story line dragged and was very predictable. I didn't care for this story at all, it wasn't even exciting and certainly not memorable.

Awesome. Took me awhile to get into the book. So keep to it and you will be hooked. Loved it and loved the 2nd one as much. Only bad thing is when does the 3rd one come out? I see a movie fa sure <3 lauri from Cleveland...

Underwhelmed. The narrative wasn’t the most interesting to follow. I like the overall concept.

The Passage. I really enjoyed the book(s). The only thing I would change is the time jump to the future. To much happened. You read the other books in the trilogy and get a few glimpses back to certain things but it could have had a little more telling. Let the readers know the colony struggles to build and survive in the new world. Stop making books like these into series. They take too much out.

Good plot, so-so execution. Good plot, cool scenario, poor character development and you sort of felt like you are reading the vampire version of The Stand.

Epic passage. JC pulls you into a reality that is so believable. I originally started the passage because of vampires/ or zombies, horror reference. But this book is so much more. Love, family, and unity of the characters is amazing. I want to be there and I was (minus the vitals)! Thank you Justin Cronin for such a wonderful experience! Can't wait for Twelve!!

Best book I've read in a long time.. The only disappointing thing was how it ended. Then again, I had no idea it was book one of a planned trilogy! Great surprise, though, because now I can download & devour The Twelve!

Not enough stars for this one!!. Amazing!

I’ve read and re-read this book over and over. If you love TheStand, as I do, then this book, this trilogy, will tip the scales for any reader. I love The Passage and all it’s intonations and meanings that JC has put forth in this tomb of a book. The characters become you and I become them and who am I echos throughout it’s pages

A complete other world. There are few things in literature so enjoyable as a book that creates an entire other world. Stephen King's Dark Tower series does it magnificently, as does Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer. Add to that list The Passage. It's the kind of book that forces you to reorient yourself to your time and place when you pause the story. A marvelous combination of character-driven and plot-driven novel. Kudos to Justin Cronin for a tremendous accomplishment. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to start reading The Twelve.

Who am I Who am I Who am I. You will be absolutely glued to this book until the final word. Wonderfully well written. The characters are genius second to the plot. I put this novel up there as one of my all time favorites.

Justin Cronin is a wizard of the highest order. Probably the best book I have ever read plain and simple. Do yourself a favor and read it!!! :)

Compelling. I must say that this book is quite good. Compelling and macabre, Cronin tells readers of a slightly augmented reality. He involves many concepts of politics to add to the realism of the novel and most characters that he developed are captivating. The reason why I gave it four stars instead of five is because there were too man plot conveniences.

Awesome.. I highly recommend it.

Force to finish. The writing is really bad. Really bad. There was a lot of unimportant plot detail which seemed to try and prolong the story. I’m not a soap opera fan. Action should not be a soap opera. If there are 12 antagonist and you kill one in the first book does that mean you are trying for a 12 book series? I’m done and I had to force myself to finish this.

Unforgettable. For some unknown reason, I didn't want to read this book upon my initial review. Some months later I happened upon a sample chapter and simply couldn't stop myself. Now that I've finished the story, weeks later, I find it thoroughly unforgettable: what a ride!

The passage. I like the most things that are my favorite pictures of the airdrome

A Christian vampire mythology. I'm halfway thru the second book now, the whole time, trying to figure out what the massive appeal of a more or less, second rate vampire mythology was about, when it finally hit me: it's because the whole thing is mired down within an even stronger mythology, the bible. Ugh! I can quit reading now. Bahhhhh! Bleat!

Masterful, Epic Adventure!. I read a few reviews, and I was compelled to write this review as I found some others that simply did not make any sense. The reviewer referenced not completing one-fourth of the book and then followed with a reference to Stephen King (excellent author also), so how could his review possibly be worthy of being posted? First, and foremost, King gave this book a thumbs up himself, so let's leave that point at it's face value. Now, on to this review. The Passage is an outstanding blend of science fiction, horror, mystery, and many other genres. Cronin's writing style is intelligent, witty, and flows logically from beginning to end. The book identifies with the educational level of Cronin as it is written far removed from being geared toward "the simple reader" who prefers simple sentences in stories. The vocabulary in this book is both worthy and well delivered. Moving on to the content of the book, the adventure will lead you from a humble beginning into a world of intrigue, pain, anger, hatred, melancholy, love, and dare I say every human emotion you have ever tasted in life. The cast of characters are well devised, meaning the reader will be able to connect with each as the story unfolds, page by page. The plot is one that is a common theme that every human being understands, fight or flight when the end is near. I will end this review with this thought, when you finish this book, you will be anxious to continue the journey in the second book by Cronin, The Twelve. I read that one already, and I am impatiently awaiting the final book to be released. Let me close with this thought ... if you want to become part of an exciting adventure, read the book. You will not be disappointed in the least. Cheers Justin Cronin!

The Passage. First part of the book engages. Then, around 600 pages in,( more than 2,000 pages on IBooks) sags like a beaten up old Turkish Army cot. Boring, confusing, and you could care less about these people. How this trilogy succeeds is beyond this readers comprehension. So dull, I didn't even finish it and deleted it from my library. Geoff Charles

Just awful. I can’t believe I read it.

Awesome !. This was an amazing read ! It's probably the longest (881 pages) that I have read in quite awhile. Great story line, great characters and fun to read. I will say that there were a couple of places where it bogged down but it picked right back up and moved forward. Can't wait wait to read the second book of this series. I highly recommend it but make sure you are willing to make the time commitment.

The Passage. Couldn't put it down.

The Passage. Couldn’t sleep , but loved it. I read the whole series!

Great read. This book was very well written with just enough mystery to make it interesting! Loved the characters and the plot. There was a time it got a little dull...but hang in there it does get better. The spooky thing is that something like this could actually happen. I love the characters and how the author develops them. They are very complex with very believable stories and situations. Overall I can't wait to read what happens next!

Best two days of reading in my life. It took me two days to read this book and let me say it was the best to days of reading in my life I couldn't put the book down

The Passage. This booked was so bad I wouldn't have finished it but once I buy a book I have to finish it. There was no ending! I waited for it end and it didn't.

Outstanding. This is an outstanding story. Engaging and original. Loved it!

Good. Great story well written did feel very familiar though not sure why looking forward to the next one

The Passage. This has to be one of the best books I have ever read. I was completely swept away by the whole concept of this story. So well written, so descriptive, so beautiful in so many ways - yet horrifying and so suspenseful, I just couldn't put it down. Highly, highly recommend this book!

Loooooong Paragraphs...... It's an okay story and I would normally give it three stars. I mean let's face it, I finished the stupid book, didn't I? But wow! It has some of the longest paragraphs I have ever seen in the history of literature. I mean, a couple of the paragraphs are reminiscent of War and Peace itself! Many, many times I would simply flip through the pages, three or four at a time, and feel like I missed nothing in the story plot. Buy it at your own risk.

Joined my lifetime Fav book list.. Utterly gripping and will not let go. Just when you believe you know where the authors going and you think you kind of know where the story and plot are heading….surprise… you hadn’t a clue and that happens multiple times and one of the reasons I love this novel. Extraordinary, is too weak of praise for this work. Amy, is forever part of me.

Easily in my top ten!!. This is the first book to make me completely emotionally invested in the characters. So much so that I found myself grieving this deaths or misfortunes and having nightmares if I had to leave off reading in a tense place. I can't wait to read The Twelve, and hopefully finally get to the bottom of the mystery that is Amy. Thank you, Mr Cronin, for a thoroughly fantastic ride!

A Different Kind of Apocalypse. Wow! This started out as an airplane read. You know, the kind of story to pass the time on a 3 hour flight. It quickly became an addiction. I couldn’t put it down. It leaves you with lots to ponder beyond what’s next. Great read. Grabbing book two now.

Original and awesome charactors. I really loved this book. It was so in depth and the characters were very well developed. So many times i found myself thinking about what might come next but i could never predict (which i like) i loved the adventure and suspense. Touched on love and relationships just enough to feel invested but not bored. Believable fiction. Mr cronin clearly did his research on the military, fBI, engineering, medicine, biology, religion, geography to name a few..all aspects so detailed and true. Then when i read that he wrote this book with the input of his daughter..so cool.

Good storytelling. Although it was a long book with many key characters it was an interesting read and it held up very well to move the plot forward. I didn’t like how it ended now but there’s more to this series trilogy so I’m glad

Pretty good. Kept me wanting to know what would happen, but not the best I've ever read

Enjoyable. I just finished this book and found it very enjoyable. The main characters were very likable and interesting. One criticism is that some of the parts seemed lengthy, but to the authors credit it came together in the end. I will definitely read the second.

Starts off great. The first 250 pages were fantastic. Then the story completely changes, about characters that I found difficult to care about. The dialog becomes terrible, and I found myself scanning through pages before long. It was a chore to complete.
