The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne Book Summary

Two young boys encounter the best and worst of humanity during the Holocaust in this powerful read that USA Today called "as memorable an introduction to the subject as The Diary of Anne Frank.โ€

Berlin, 1942: When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move to a new house far, far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people in the distance.

But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different from his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

Best. Awesome

Best Holocaust book I have read!!. I first read this book at age 11 or 12 for reading class (it was like a chose a book assignment) my teacher thought that it would be too mature or too upsetting for me but it changed my views on the holocaust. I used to think that children weren't treated as poorly but after reading this book I realized that everyone was treated bad then. I recommend this book! After you can also watch the movie, I believe it's on Netflix it was a very good movie.

Ye. Great book, very sad though and it is WAY better than the movie

Great. This is an amazing book I'm not usually into this stuff but I LOVED this such a sad ending๐Ÿ˜ญ

Very sad ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ. Very emotional and well written book. I recommend this book if you like sad but good stories about true events

Amazing. I read this book a while ago but itโ€™s amazing and good emotion jerker

Good. I watched the movie it was a good one and the ending was sad but thatโ€™s just what happened I really liked it well I can only read the samples but I really want to read the book now.

the boy in the striped pajamas. it was scary

AWWWWW๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ‘. This book is the best book I have ever read, not just for the heart and soul of the characters, but the sweet innocence. This book is amazing. The word "amazing" actually doesn't even do the book justice. If you live heartfelt, traffic, books about love and caring for others you will love this book so much. I know I did. I just finished reading it 2 minutes ago and I loved it. I've never been able to read 1 book more than once, but this book, I could read a million times!โค๏ธ

Fifth grade reader. I'm in fifth grade we read it in class I loved it but the movie is very different

Really good book!. If you haven't read this book or haven't seen the movie I really recommend reading this book!

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”. I own the book but have not read it my brother said it is really good and he hates reading canโ€™t wait for him to get to the end๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

No!. Donโ€™t say that you like this book with an ending like that. Canโ€™t believe they made this for children. This is NOT kid friendly.

What happens next?. I can see why some people would think โ€œYou canโ€™t show this to kids!โ€ Nevertheless, itโ€™s an important story. It shows the hardships of innocent people so that we can remember to make sure it never happens again. My biggest problem with it is the writing style. We donโ€™t actually meet โ€œthe boy in the striped pajamas until halfway through the book. Up until then itโ€™s all exposition. Frankly, a lot of the flashbacks should have happened later on, not early on. Also it sometimes shows how Shumel is feeling as if he is the main character. This is fine, but for at least 80% of the book Bruno was the main character, and only his thoughts and feelings were shared. If Shumel was going to be treated like a main character then he should have been introduced sooner. However, despite all these flaws John Boyle was able to make me ask the question any successful author has to make their audience ask: What happens next? P.S. The ending was very ironic and surprising.

Incredible book. This book is incredible! It describes the point of view of a child from the Holocaust, a naive one at that, so well. Bruno is a lovable character and his relationship with Shmuel turned out disastrous.

Hi. Best sci fi movie I have ever touched must smell book

The boy in the striped pajamas review. This book was very emotional and it was heartwarming in parts and funny in others and in other parts it was just down right heartbreaking. I recommend you give this book a read if you are within 6-9 grade as it contains very emotional parts and also extreme parts like the end that I wonโ€™t spoil and the fact that there is an internment camp and the usage of โ€œphaseโ€ in this book. Overall very good read. I highly recommend this book.

Absolutely Beautiful. Very attached to this book and how the author writes it with so much emotion loved it. very amazing it's a must read.

Boy in the striped pajamas. I love this book it's the best if I could I would read this every day but it's really sad at the end of the book

Wow๐Ÿ˜ฎ. I watched the movie ๐Ÿฟ and it was good I wanna read the book but canโ€™t cause it cost money but I see everyone says it is good so I read it another time

Great,Heartbreaking,Touching, and just perfect. This is an amazing book plzzzzz read!! I recommend it 100%

Amazing!. I havenโ€™t seen the movie but read the book. This was an amazing book to read and itโ€™s sitting with my favorites. The storyline and descriptions are perfect. I totally recommend it, even though it has a sad ending.

A story that should never be forgotten. All I can say about this short book, is that it should be required reading. From a child's perspective, 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas', describes one of the darkest times in human history.

Amazing. It was so sad but it was the best book I have ever read about the holocost ๐Ÿ˜œ

Heartbreaking and Warming. This story pushed and pulled at my heart strings the entire way through. The character development and detail was captivating and made me feel as though i was a part of the story as well. The pure innocence of our protagonist was beautifully portrayed, and honestly i would read this again. Much better than the adaption (the movie) in terms of the characters, giving each their own backstory and adding depth to them. Would recommend and absolutely adored every moment of it. ^-^

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. This is one of the best books Iโ€™ve read!!

Great but sad. This book is amazing but just so so sad

The boy in the striped pajamas. This book was an amazing adventure with two best friends that come from separate worlds but connect despite what's happening around them, if you want a book about love, courage, and bravery this is what I recommend

Boy in the striped pajamas. HATED THE ENDING!! ๐Ÿ˜ž

I loved it. It was a touching and significant portrayal of an important matter that left me feeling numb. Nonetheless, it was also a compelling narrative that enlightened me as a reader on the struggles of individuals affected by the event. The fact that these experiences can be inherently distressing added to the effectiveness of the story. I cried throughout the book, and my tears have left stains on their pages.

BEST AND SADDEST BOOK YOU WILL EVER READ. This book was amazing! I just loved how the writer made this from a point of view of a 9 year old. I thought it was cute but sad how Bruno(9 year old) thought Jews uniforms were "striped pajamas."

Great book. Good insight on world war 2

Bitter/sweet. This is a great story. John Boyne did a great job revealing the truth and tragic events behind something that so many people think never really happened, in such a short story. Although this story is so sorrowful it is so terribly true.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ. I've heard so much about this story and I'm sad I waited this long too read it.

The Movie. If you liked this book watch it on Netflix and I mean it is so SAD I started crying a few times๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฐ๐Ÿ˜ฐ๐Ÿ˜ฐ๐Ÿ˜ฐ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ช๐Ÿ˜ช๐Ÿ˜ช๐Ÿ˜ช๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Summary. This book will send you on an emotion rollercoaster! Yes it is about the horrible time, the holocaust. This book is not your normal "holocaust" story. This story is about Bruno a young curious little boy who moves from Berlin to Poland. In a new house he calls "Out-With" how he pronounces it, or Auschwitz. Bruno has an older sister Gretel, who is fascinated by dolls (she collects them.)He has a mother who basically is commanded by his father. His father (a soldier) has been transferred to Poland to an Auschwitz concentration camp. But Bruno being only 8 years just thinks he moving to a different house that has fence some miles away with people in the striped pajamas. As I said before it's not your typical Holocaust book. Bruno and his family are not Jewish. They are the "opposite". Bruno missing his "3 best friends for life" Bruno decides to go exploring behind the walls of his new house. He comes upon a boy in striped pajamas. His name is Shmuel. They start talking, but Shmuel is behind the fence. After that every afternoon they go on hours covering about themselves. After a year or so, Bruno and Gretel get lice. Their mother is furious and demands to go back to Berlin. Bruno tells Shmuel he is going back to his "home". Shmuel tells him his father is missing. Bruno tells him they can look for evidence the following day. The next day Shmuel brings him a pair of striped pajamas and a striped cap. This will help him "blend" in. After searching for 1 1/2 hour, the soldiers tell them to March. Its pouring rain so they think that they are going into shelter. When the arrive in a long house. Then... I don't want to spoil anything but I'm pretty sure everyone knows what happens. This book does not have a happy ending. It does not tell you anything in detail. It gives you subtle hints to what is happening. Yet it is told in the eyes of an 8 year old. I hope this book gives you an eye opener of what is what like back in Germany. If this does not give you some sort of an emotional feedback then you have not had the full effect of what the book is intended to do. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy this book.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. A boy perspective on the Holocaust, but from a new perspective: watching it all happen. An emotional ride worth taking.

Moving.. The book gives you a perspective of something so real through such innocent eyes, the ones of a child. Really good book of an awful time in history.

Boy In the striped pajamas. Best book ever

I love this book so much.. This book is a real tear jerker it has some sad parts, some funny parts, and happy parts I think this is a very good book for all ages.

Will Break, no, SHATTER your Heart. Amazing! Slow at first, but the last twenty or so pages, MMMM! A true friendship that is both innocent and pure which is what children should be learning about these days. WARNING: THIS IS NOT TWILIGHT, THE ENDING IS NOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM HAPPY.

Such an amazing and perf book๐Ÿ‘Œ. I love this book and I barely started and I'm starting to love it. I'm glad there r books like this. I hope to keep on reading it๐Ÿ˜

Good book. Great book, that shows just how rude the human race can be sometimes towards their brothers and sisters. Especially just because the are Jews. Read this book and you'll learn to better respect people no matter who they are

Absolutely heartbreaking. I used to read this as a kid and I never fully grasped what was truly happening. The author made you grow very attached to Bruno and how pure he was. Which made the ending even more heartbreaking.

The end is sad and happy. I cried about the terrible things they did. It was nice how they are united in the end. A very well written book. Very detailed and descriptive. A very sad book

Heartbreaking. The end of this book had me very sad, not because of what happened, but because every chapter sort of foreshadows it happening

Nice story. This book was the most clear and straightforward story about the Holocaust, stating every detail and most important, sad moments in the life of a young innocent child who saw all that happened to the Jews and did better in this situation that the authorities. The lesson of true friendship was beautiful to read about when the narrator uses the language of love for a friend. Bruno did anything he could just to be with his friend Shmuel for a very last moment at the end. The story also had the saddest ending too. I loved it, the moral and characters and everything!! Highly recommend!!!๐Ÿ’ฏ

Great Book. I had to read this book for summer reading and it's one book I managed to not want to put down but instead keep reading until the end (which was very upsetting). The book was written very well.

Disappointed.... I disliked this book, it made me cry. Donโ€™t recommend

Horrible. I canโ€™t believe you would make a book like THIS for children

Disappointed. I was very disappointed by the outcome in this book! Overall the book is fantastic but the ending leaves you in shock and makes you feel terrible! Cool story, bad outcome!

Its ok. I was forced in 4th grade to read this in 2 weeks i hated it, yet now ive read it once more and the book is not half bad. I enjoyed the Nazi germany stuff too!

Can anyone tell me about this and if you recommend it?. I have heard about this being depressing, is it really?

Unfortunate ending. The book is very well- written for the most part and it is interesting viewing the perspective of a young boyโ€™s on a concentration camp and the life during Germany 1942. The ending is truly shocking and left me dissatisfied. Although it does make the book unique and gives you a sense of how things were backs then. I would recommend, although just be prepared to be shook by the ending.๐Ÿ˜ญ

Great read. I loved this book! A great story and a great read!

Jaw Dropped. Absolutely loved this book! Amazing vocabulary and I couldnโ€™t put it down!! The ending was a bit confusing but watching the movie definitely cleared it up. 10/10 I would definitely recommend.
