Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb Book Summary

A gorgeously illustrated anniversary edition of the book that launched the epic Farseer Trilogy, praised by George R. R. Martin as “fantasy as it ought to be written” and Lin-Manuel Miranda as “an incredible series,” featuring a new foreword by Robin Hobb and ten illustrations.

Twenty-five years ago, Robin Hobb’s first novel featuring FitzChivalry Farseer and his mysterious, often maddening friend the Fool struck like a bolt of brilliant lightning. Thus began a beloved saga spanning multiple series, full of adventure, magic, and sinister plots. To celebrate a quarter-century of wonder, this special edition presents a modern classic as it’s never been seen before, with ten beautiful illustrations by Magali Villeneuve.

Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal court by his father’s gruff stableman. He is treated as an outcast by all the royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him secretly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in Fitz’s blood runs the magic Skill—and the darker knowledge of a child raised with the stable hounds and rejected by his family.

As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts, Fitz is growing to manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission. And though some regard him as a threat to the throne, he may just be the key to the survival of the kingdom.

Praise for Robin Hobb and Assassin’s Apprentice

“Fantasy as it ought to be written . . . Robin Hobb’s books are diamonds in a sea of zircons.”—George R. R. Martin

“A gleaming debut in the crowded field of epic fantasies . . . a delightful take on the powers and politics behind the throne.”—Publishers Weekly

“This is the kind of book you fall into, and start reading slower as you get to the end, because you don’t want it to be over.”—Steven Brust

Fantastic read!. I don't even know how I stumbled onto this book or author on iBooks but i thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to the next one!

Epic, life-changing. This and the books that follow are among my most treasured books. The characters are richly developed and the pacing is perfect. I wouldn't have the author change a thing. Read this book!

Best series ever. I've read this series several times. I don't normally re-read books. This has to be my favorite series. I love the characters. Especially Fitz & the Fool. You have to read this series then the Tawny Man series. Same characters. It finishes the story.

Pretty good. Decent

Almost excellent... Would have given it 5 stars, but his talent to "repel" people disappears after the beginning of the book, I guess to further the plot.

Interesting and lively. This is a great read. Interesting and lively. Once you read this book, you will want to pick up the next one in the series.

One of the Best Books I’ve Read. The Assassin’s Apprentice takes us into an exciting world of courtly intrigue. Following Fitz’s journey from boyhood to the king’s assassin is a delightful read. Highly recommend. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

Couldn't Put It Down. Very interesting plot, great cast of characters. I hope the next books in the series have as much to offer. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

The Assassin's Apprentice. If you relish reads with richly realized worlds and characters, this book is for you (and the rest of the Assassin series, followed by the Tawny Man series). Hobb creates a detailed world, redolent of our own, with characters whose histories clearly motivate their actions. It's a great series to fall into.

Wonderful!. A modern day instant classic. Many thanks to Robin for such a delightful gift.

Nice. Nice

Not for me. Well written, but the characters are not likable. Also, it was irritating that neither the characters nor the narrator attempt to systematize or explain how magic works in the book's world. While it probably serves the author's purpose (say to put readers in a slightly confused or apprehensive state), it's hard to appreciate.

Not to bad. The book starts kind of slow and understanding but the more you read, the more it gets better and better. Enjoyed very much and recommend it to read.

Great characters, compelling word-building, wide-ranging story. This is the first e-book I ever read (predates iBooks; it was a freebie)... and what a way to start! Hobb paints a wonderful world inhabited by deeply human characters and just a touch of magic. The Farseer trilogy is just the beginning: The Tawny Man trilogy continues the saga, the Liveship Traders Trilogy branches to a different part of the same world (which the Tawny Man trilogy delicately connects to), which then continues with the Rainwild Chronicles. And the ride is not over: Later this year “Fool’s Assassin” is expected, which will take us back to the Six Duchies world and the Farseer family. Highly recommended.

Excellent. Couldn’t put down this rich and satisfying read.

Line height so bad I can't read it. This iBook is formatted so poorly I can't get into a reading flow. The line heights are so far apart it hurts my brain.

Engrossing!. Robin Hobb has created a world as rich and intriguing as any caprured by JRR Tolkein or George RR Martin. Real characters, insanely great storylines, and clearly written prose make for an engrossing adventure throughout this series--The Assassin's Apprentice is a worthy introduction to Ms Hobb's world!!

Outstanding start to a fantasy series. Assassin's Apprentice is a engrossing, throughly enjoyable read. Well plotted and with well thought out characters. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Good enough. Fairly good plot with a few notable holes, interesting characters lacking slightly in depth, good ending that closed out a little to neatly and quickly. A good read, just not on the level of Tolkien, Martin, Lewis, or Rothfuss.

Assassins apprentice. One feels like a participant in Hobb’s stories. Excellent!

WITHOUT DOUBT, THE SLOWEST NOVEL I HAVE EVER READ. I tried to read this book four times. All the great reviews told me I must be missing something. I read Crossroads of Twilight, I know slow books, but this was a whole new level. I came to the point that if I have to FORCE myself to read something I'm missing the point. I just couldn't do it....

Wow :-). Where to start, got this hoping it was similar to George RR martins of fire and ice however this book and I'm sure this series is in my opinion BETTER even on the new paperbacks Martin says" how fantasy should be written" Hobb really knows how to put you in this realm she created and having just finished this I immediately bought the rest of the trilogy I am so excited about this book that I am ignoring all grammatical errors from this review Robin Hobb has stolen my heart and I never want it back she has earned it love this story love Robin Hobb ud have to be a fool not to open up to this story no this experience

Assassins apprentice. Ten out of Ten!!! I grew very fond of Fitz character. Can’t wait to see what journey the next book in the

Are you thinking about reading this? Think again.. I gave this book two stars because it was *BY FAR* the best book in this series. I just finished the series. I have endured long and worthless amounts of pain because I didn’t stop reading it (even though I knew it would probably go not so well). I was holding out for a happy ending, but after this book it just goes downhill. Really fast. Scratch that. Nothing about this series is fast. Honestly if you want to spend three to seven hours reading about meaningless traveling for *absolutely no reason* then go right ahead. I just wish someone woulda told me how rough this series is. Loves are lost, souls are broken, betrayal, sad loneliness, and messed up people. It doesn’t end well, guys. That doesn’t mean that people die, although that could happen in any book, I’m just saying that it ended on a depressing note. But if ya wanna try it. Honestly, good luck. I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

Magnificent voyage. The fact that I am writing this review -I never write reviews- says enough. The world and characters are so... real and ordinary and complex, so believable... I write this after reading the whole assassin and fool series... I feel like waking up from a long coma filled with wondrous dreams. Ordinary life awaits, and yet, the memory of Fitz and the Fool are with me now...

Amazing.. I've read all of this series as well as the one that follows and they are by far my favourite fantasy books.

Fabulous read. I spent my day anticipating reading more each time I went to work and each evening when I got home, all my free time was spent reading this book. I am severely lacking sleep now. Fabulous read! Recommend it for sure!

An Excellent, Character-Driven Fantasy. I read The Name of the Wind first but I believe this was published first. Assassin’s Apprentice clearly inspired TNotW. Both are fantastic but I think I liked this book even better. A likeable protagonist at the mercy of politics he doesn’t fully understand. Part one of Fitz’s is emotional and exciting. Definitely more deliberately paced but I think that makes the book all the better. Feels like a real life.

Good but slow start. It's takes a while to get into the book, but once the story gets going its hard to put down the book
