Nothing to Lose by Lee Child Book Summary

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Lee Child’s The Affair.

Two lonely towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, twelve miles of empty road. Jack Reacher never turns back. It's not in his nature. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets is big trouble. So in Lee Child’s electrifying new novel, Reacher—a man with no fear, no illusions, and nothing to lose—goes to war against a town that not only wants him gone, it wants him dead.

It wasn’t the welcome Reacher expected. He was just passing through, minding his own business. But within minutes of his arrival a deputy is in the hospital and Reacher is back in Hope, setting up a base of operations against Despair, where a huge, seething walled-off industrial site does something nobody is supposed to see . . . where a small plane takes off every night and returns seven hours later . . . where a garrison of well-trained and well-armed military cops—the kind of soldiers Reacher once commanded—waits and watches . . . where above all two young men have disappeared and two frightened young women wait and hope for their return.

Joining forces with a beautiful cop who runs Hope with a cool hand, Reacher goes up against Despair—against the deputies who try to break him and the rich man who tries to scare him—and starts to crack open the secrets, starts to expose the terrifying connection to a distant war that’s killing Americans by the thousand.

Now, between a town and the man who owns it, between Reacher and his conscience, something has to give. And Reacher never gives an inch.

Not his best. I love the Jack Reacher series but this story did measure up. Looking forward to starting the next one though!

Worst in a great series. Full disclosure: I'm a fan of Lee Child and Jack Reacher. This particular story is not among the best; probably the worst in my opinion. Instead of a story on a small scale where Reacher is working to help someone wronged (like Echo Burning or The Hard Way) the scale of this event is just too big to be plausible. Still, every Reacher book is fun, and this one certainly has its moments.

Not the best. I am a huge Jack Reacher fan and. Probably read over a dozen of these books. So my muted comments here might be only reflective of the fact that I am trying of the series. I like them because they are easy to read, entertaining , and predictable. The last attribute could account for why I am tiring o fhem. Fiction always call for you to suspend belief. But Lee Child asks a lot of this from us. We are to believe that Jack Reacher only has some cash, a toothbrush, an ATM card, and an expired US passport. He buys new clothes rather than wash old ones. He mush comb his hair with his hand. He has no driver’s license but always ends up driving some one else’s car. He always beds another woman, often a cop, with non-descriptive sex. He sometimes finds trouble by accident or it finds him. This story has him involved for few if any personal reasons, other than the fact that he wanted to visit a town named “Despair” and then became more curious about its dubious activities when the powers running the town asked him to leave. There are the three or four fights that he always wins, is always outnumbered, and always escapes with no two much as flesh wound. At the end of the story he moves on. In the end, the story is neither better or worse than many others, although the Killing Floor seems to have been the best plot. Will I read more Reacher books? Maybe. But this one made me pause and ask why.

Nothing to lose. Except your time! Not compelling and too anti Christianity. Time for a new series. Steakguy62

Nothing to lose. Typically great.

Not interesting. This wasn’t easy to follow and wasn’t exciting at all.

Nothing to Lose. Have read 10-12 of Child's books featuring Reacher. This doesn't measure up to any of the others. Boring, meaningless details. Read about 50% of the book and quit. Very rare for me. LWS

Good read. This was the first Jack Reacher novel I read. Don’t ask me why I started here but I did and it was good enough to make me start at the beginning and they just keep getting better.

A low point in the series.. I've been reading all the Reacher books in order since discovering the series a few months ago. I've loved them all...until this one. Frankly, it was boring, slow and uninspired. I'll continue reading. Certainly I'm not the first of this opinion. He must have found his way back on track.

Just Awful.. “Hope” is what I had from reading the previous Jack Reacher Novel. “Despair” is what I have while reading this novel. Good Lord. 200 pages of nothing. How many ways can we describe drinking a cup of coffee? And when Reacher is explaining something and says “Later,” you won’t know until the end of the book. Then Child ties it all up with a pretty bow.

Just okay. IMHO: This Reacher story seemed to take awhile to get going and also seemed to drag on towards the ending. If you’re reading them in order like me, you may want to skip this one and come back for it later. Just okay.

Don’t start here. I started with the first book in the Jack Reacher series, and I’m about to read the next, #12. They are thrilling, edged-of-your seat stories that will have you hooked! Unless you start with this book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not horrible, but I would not have purchase 11 other books if I had started with this...

Ok. 19 out of 100

Just OK. I love Lee Child's books, but this one was just OK.

Terrible. Terrible. Starts ok but it's all downhill. Worst part is using an 'end times preacher' as the vehicle to mischaracterize Christians, the bible, and the book of Revelation.

VERY EXCCITING!!!. This. Book, Nothing to Lose, is masterfully written as are all of the Authors books about Jack Reacher. IF you want non-stop action, read this book to see what one man can do.

Not worth it. Not the best book in the series, probably the worst (I haven't finished them all yet). The author took too far of a leap and the book came out far to political.

Ok. Again....not on my favorites list......but it's still "Reacher", he never ceases to entertain me!

Typical Reacher. Again he travels to a town where his special talents are needed.

Disappointing. Reacher spends the first 30% of the book beating up people just because they annoy him & before he even suspects anything is wrong, much less know who is guilty. Very disappointing for a character who usually does what is right. He’s the bully at the start & the fact that he discovers the plot by the end never makes up for his attacks at the start when he didn’t know.

Nothing to close. A very good book and story, but overtly wordy. Way to descriptive.

Nothing to write home about.. I'm reading all the Reachers in published order. This is the weakest one so far. In case you're interested, my favorite was "Enemy"- tightly plotted and subtly written, with compelling characters and mystery. "Nothing to Lose" has a cast of two dimensions and a lot of driving back and forth, or walking back and forth, between Hope and Despair, Colorado, like an old episode of "Rockford", but lacking the charm and humor. There's no "McGuffin"- no central question to drive the plot along, though I read along in hope one would be revealed. Finally I despaired of one, and read only out of respect for the Reacher brand. When the motivation of the villain is finally revealed, I found it totally implausible! I think Child phoned this one in.

Poor Reacher. Loved the previous stories, but this one not so much. I could actually hear Reacher gagging on the overly political dialogue Child was forcing him to spout. It seemed so inconsistent with everything we've seen from him in the past. Beyond this, the plot was just silly and meandering as if it was being made up on the fly. If this was a sign of things to come, I think I'll look for a new series to get hooked on.

Nothing To Lose. I enjoy the Jack Reacher series but this would not be my first choice for a recommendation....

Meh. I started at the first Reacher book and am working my way through them all. This book was my least favorite- by far. Didn't really care about any of the characters and Child got a little too political for my liking. Worth reading if you're reading them all, otherwise...

Worst. Terrible read in this series.

First Reacher Book I Read. This book hooked me. It was the first Jack Reacher book I read, though it has not been my last. It's a quick read with an interesting plot. I read many other of the reviewers who mentioned that the plot isn't very realistic. If you want realistic fiction, none of the Reacher books are really for you. However, if you want a book that includes action and a catching plot line, then dive in!

Slow to develop. I wanted to love this series but I just don’t. This book took way to long to develop the plot and, in my opinion, Child tried too hard to impress with every minute detail of knowledge. I’ll take Rapp over Reacher any day...

Excellent plot and great heri. Child takes us on a thrilling rollercoaster ride again. His attention to detail is mindboggling, perhaps too much so. Do we really need to know how many blocks Reacher took from a motel to a fiber before turning in another direction, then walking more blocks? Such specificity is stupefying and detracts from the pace of an enticing tale.

Captures Your Interest. A lot of different trails to follow in this book. Kept you reading to see where each one led.

Always enjoyable. Reacher always in the wrong place at the right time!

Nothing to lose. Absolutely great read. Thank you. 3 rd time I read this one.
