The Road by Cormac McCarthy Book Summary

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). • From the bestselling author of The Passenger

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Tightly focused, compellingly written. Not light reading, by any means, but written with economy of style and ornamentation (and even punctuation!) However, after I finished reading it, I did wonder a bit about the point. The themes and major message are pretty obvious, and it's not clear to me that it offers anything new in the fairly well-trod post-apocalyptic drama. Having said that, the writing is so compelling and the father-son relationship well-described, so this book still gets an excellent rating. Don't expect anything new, but expect a quality evening's reading.

Great Book. I downloaded this book after seeing it mentioned In a magazine. After the first couple of pages I didn't think I would be able to finish, after about ten pages I couldn't put it down. I finished it that day. Now I'm in the process of downloading more of his books. I hope I'm not disappointed. Judging by this one I'm sure I won't be.

Made my emotions come out. This book has so much conflict and the fathers devotion to his son made me either really happy when he protected him but also it made me cry at the and... Just a little bit.

Odd book. All I can say is it was a very odd book.

Bleak but beautiful. Words...words flow like prose. Each one chosen to portray this ruined and desolate land. I love the sparse use of punctuation, it seems so right, conversation flows. No names for man or boy. You must read this book, it’s a work of art, simply beautiful.

Don't expect a happy ending. Had to read for for a class. Very dark and depressing. Some things are good but just not my kind of book.

Unreadable. The e-version of this book is not readable. Whoever transcribed this sounded like he was black out drunk and failed 6th grade English more than once. The editor is just as bad for missing so many mistakes. I made it 5 pages. 5 pages was all I could manage before I stopped from frustration at how terribly written this is. Almost every sentence is missing commas, apostrophes, periods, has an extra period, has poor sentence structure, is a run on sentence, is full of unnecessary filler words, or is an incomplete sentence. Here are a few examples directly from the book. I didn’t change anything. “He said: If he is not the word of God God never spoke.” “He pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes and blankets and looked toward the east for any light but there was none.” “And on the far shore a creature that raised its dripping mouth from the rimstone pool and stared into the light with eyes dead white and sightless as the eggs of spiders.” “He pulled the blue plastic tarp off of him and folded it and carried it out to the grocery cart and packed it and came back with their plates and some cornmeal cakes in a plastic bag and a plastic bottle of syrup.” “October but he wasnt sure.” Excerpts From The Road Cormac McCarthy My 7 year old nephew is a better writer.

Great father son dynamic.. I will never forget the trials the boy and his father endured.

Enchanting. Although McCarthy creates a novel full of tension and wretched survival in a post-apocalyptic world. The messages portrayed by the father and son are powerful and impactful. Will definitely read again!

Touching. It is hard to think that I will ever forget this book. It is dark and sad. Sometimes poetic and sometimes scary. The imagery is hard to forget.

Haunting. To read this novel in a single sitting is to be utterly destroyed emotionally at the end. One of his many many masterpieces

10/10. I love it . It was so good and it was so productive to me and i feel so good and so yea and it made me feel so uh like i made me some hot cocoa and a donut with it😂😂so yea

Absolutely breathtaking story. Any book enthusiast should read this book at least once. An absolutely brilliant read.

Sewytg. Would

Well penned. Killer style. A bit gloomy tho. Goes on too long same thing over and over. Like life.

The road. The story was as dreary and lifeless as the imagery and words

Read this book. A very moving, beautifully written story about love and perseverance.

Humanity Lives. Amazing book. It’s hopeful but realistic. Life will always find a way!

great book. i remember i had to read this book in high school and loved every minute of it.

Grammatical Errors. I LOVE this book, I must have read it dozens of times . My issue here is not with the content of the book, but the errors. I'm 60 pages in (a mere tenth of the way through the book) and I've already picked out at least 4 grammatical errors. Call me a grammar Nazi, but if I'm gonna pay money for a poor copy over, then I expect it to be near free. Quite disappointed with Apple on this one. 👎

VERY GOOD. The book had a good feel to it, at times quite depressing. I enjoyed the relationship between the father and his son. I was informed by an Apple Representative that McCarthy choose to keep contraction errors, which resulted in bastardizing the English language, and McCarthy passing poor grammar on to young impressionable minds. I gave it an OK rating due to the intentional errors by McCarthy.

Amazing. A very good read from start to finish. I could not bring myself to put the book down. I would read on my break at work and in between classes at school. Highly recommend to any one who was a good post apocalyptic story

Love this book. Brilliant writing

Depressing. Overrated, depressing book. Forced myself to keep reading to give it an honest shot. No thanks!

A dark, hopeless, dreary journey. I'm a sucker for a good apocalyptic story, but this one took a bit of mental effort to trudge through the monotony, the hopelessness, and the dreary dark tale of this father and son seeking to find something, anything, towards the southern coast. I struggle between three and four stars — it was well-written, but monotonous; emotionally tugging at times, but fatiguing with few emotional highs to propel you forward. But then again, this is the near end of humanity and the most certain end of a civilized world — the book was bleak through and through.

Visceral. I only give 5 stars for books like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones... That being said it I could do another half star I would! The journey the characters undertake are a raw look at humanity. The perspective of the main character is so stark and realistic. The fact that you journey deep into his psyche and yet never know him. You have so much and so little. It was a read like no other. Hope there is a part 2!!!

Didn't like it. Well I saw the other reviews and I am definitely in the minority but I didn't like it at all. It was so drawn out. There really was no climax or interesting monologue.

Good book. Need more books like this.

A great read. A great choice for a weekend read-a-thon. Start on Friday evening and don’t stop until you are done on Sunday. Well written and deserving of all the praise it received.

Deep and moving. Couldn't put this down, fast paced and chilling.

Absolutely Beautiful. This is an amazing book. It grows on you, until, in the end, you feel so strongly for the man and his child. I loved it.

Say hi if you go to SJP. Say it

A book of its own.. I love the book and I love the movie. I read this book in high school and did a report on it. I was given an A for "nailing it" (the exact words use by the teacher). This book was a page turner for me. I wanted to know what happen next and before I knew it I had read the final page I grew sad that I wouldn't find out what happened next. I do not usually like books that could have terrible things in them but u needed to know what beheld in this book "The Road"

As others have said, a haunting tale. This was a very well done book. Cormac's writing style is a bit different than usual, but once you're used to it it's not a problem at all. The vivid imagery he uses and descriptive language is what truly creates the story, but the entire relationship between the father and son builds upon it and gives a very powerful message: a parent will do anything to care for their child, no matter what the circumstances are. I would highly recommend this, and then afterwards watch the movie, as that was not half bad either.

GCBSF: Good Cataclysm. Baby-Sitting Father!. Dear Cormac – Wow. The writing in this is very good. I worry about you. Because if this story was inside of you, it must be pretty dark in there. How are you? We loved the babysitting in this scintillating novel – I particularly loved the scene where the man taught the boy to shoot a flair gun. This novel and the Ann M. Martin classic “BSC in the USA” speak to each other across the void. Both are about road trips, babysitting, and flawed father figures. Cormac - Quick question: Is this our actual future? By which we mean, is the heat death of the universe going to kill everyone we’ve known (and the humanity and warmth inside us) and snuff out every light we’ve ever turned our faces to in hope as the universe succumbs to entropy and everything descends into darkness? And finally, was it jorts when they find the pants and cut them? – Jack Shepherd and Tanner Greenring (P.S. We loved this one)

Simply Stunning. At once muted and yet searingly engrossing, The Road presents a vivid post apocalyptic vision of the relationship between father and son that is wholly unforgettable. I come back to this book again and again.

Sad. Such an abysmal tale starting in nothing and ending in nothing. Beautifully written and full of hope and heartbreak.

The Road. The will to live in the good and the evil. Thank you Mr. McCarthy.

Excellent, Tense, Depressing, Foretelling…. A unique writing style initially confusing but quickly intimate and necessary. I hovered over the characters as they made their way down The Road.

Great Read. This was a very good book. It left a lot to the imagination and I really enjoyed that. I can’t wait to watch the movie.

Unlike anything else. I only read this book because my dad said to. I was a little skeptical when I started but quickly began enjoying every second of it. It's a slow moving book with many horrible and gruesome events that take place. The conversations between the man and boy are very well written, like an actual child is talking. Overall it was very entertaining, fascinating, and heartbreaking book all at once.

The Road. I kept waiting for something hopeful to happen. This was a gray dismal story about mans' inhumanity to man.

Excellent. Likely outcome eventually

That was awful. This story is an incoherent mess. Okay? Okay. I purchased it because it was a Pulitzer Prize winning novel. I thought that meant something; I think it only meant the author owned a thesaurus. Save your time and your money.

Great writing. Beautiful minimalist writing. I love the lyrical attributes and rhythm you feel while reading The Road. I drew a lot of inspiration from McCarthy in my own writing

Deserving of a better film adaptation.. Such an outstanding work of fiction surely deserves a better adaptation to the silver screen than the 2009 effort starring Viggo Mortensen. Cormac McCarthy creates a devastating, visceral landscape for our protagonists to journey across, & threatens us with calamity at every turn of the page.

Disturbing. Great read. Very disturbing. I would highly recommend this book.

The most vivid images.. I think this book is so exciting to read as you are inside what the author was trying to describe that he was painting in his head. I also think this book is great to read in a time of climate change. Reads like a movie playing in your thought process the whole road. McCarthy succeeded above and beyond in putting crystal clear images in the readers mind while they read making him a pure artist in literature.

Fantastic. I read this book my junior year of high school. Normally I hate the books that I had to read for school, but this one was so chilling and was such a page turner. Cormack McCarthy is a literary genius.

The Road. I am speechless. Gripping,!

The road. Why couldn’t I view the whole book?

Read it now. An absolutely incredible read - totally unique and with an intense sense of dread unlike anything I've read. Beautiful writing (no surprise there) and one of the few books that I want to read multiple times.

Pretty good. Poetic for sure. Hmm. Maybe I’m missing something but was a bit of a tougher read. Good enough to finish though.
