The Stand by Stephen King Book Summary

#1 BESTSELLER • The apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and tangled in an elemental struggle between good and evil remains as riveting—and eerily plausible—as when it was first published. • The tie-in edition of the nine-part CBS All Access series starring Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander Skarsgard, and James Marsden.

A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the world’s population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge—Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious “Dark Man,” who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between them—and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.

The Stand. I am a huge fan of Stephen King since l was a teenager!! I have hardback Copies of some of his books, but l did not get the opportunity to read The Stand until this moment, l didn’t want it to end!! I read this book every chance l got, this is one of his best work!! It reflects the time and some of the trials we are facing in the world present day. The story was very riveting!!

3rd time around with this one! Love it every time. Great book cover to cover

Well-Written. It is a long book but well-written. And it was an ironic timing for me to read it when the COVID-19 pandemic was ongoing.

The Stand Stufran. I absolutely love this book. I have read it before and owned the book. I had a flood and lost all my Steven King books, and I had them all. It is a great story!!

Great story. Compelling characters. But long.

An Amazing Story!. It became apparent as I read this book that what Steven King wrote was reminder of COVID-19. Hopefully, we will not have to go through what the characters in this novel experienced in our battle with our plague.

Long Winded. This version genuinely doesn’t add anything of value to the edited version, and still has the faults of entirely skippable character chapters such as the Larry Underwood ones. Found myself skim-reading most of it and didn’t want to finish.

The Best. Best modern fiction book ever written, in my opinion. 👍🏻❤️😃

The Stand. I read this when it first came out and found it fascinating. My opinion hasn’t changed. If anything, I find it more horrifying now as we deal with COVID and the state of chaos in the United States. What an incredible mind and imagination Mr. King has.

A masterpiece. I’ve been reading this book on and off since 2009 and I never wanted to finish it because it was so good. King is a god of literature

A kind of corona with the burnt match stub at its center.. Thank you coronavirus for making me want to read this. I am 25 percent of the way done with reading it for the first time. It’s enthralling so far. I’ve been reading it for six out of the past eight hours since I started.

All the time you need. Epic

Amazing. Must read.

Must read. I’ve read this three times and it becomes more and more pertinent every single time

Slow Burn, Great Read!. It took me awhile to get into this book. But once I did, it was hard to put down! Great read. Well thought out characters. I will probably read this one again in a few years.

Too much filler. I read the original years ago...and then re-read it two or three times more over the years. Loved it. I was curious about reading the unedited version, but had to stop reading less than half way through. It drones on and on. It is clear to me why it was edited down in the first place.

Comfort during Corona. Captain Trips makes COVID-19 seem like a joke.

Epic story of quintessential struggle. I really enjoyed reading this book! An epic that is definitely going to be worth rereading over and over again

A Masterpiece. I will admit, there were many times in this book when I thought I couldn’t finish. 1400 pages is a lot, and it was a challenge. I’m very good I did read this though. The characters are so amazing, and Randall Flagg really made me think about how different our world could be if events like this actually happened. I read It before starting this one, and this definitely measures up to those high expectations. Even though this was such a long book, it feels so good to finish such a masterpiece. I love Stephen King and how writing style, getting you engrossed into the book so easily. Definitely one of the best books I think I’ll ever read. Once you get past the first 200-ish pages, you will get hooked on this book. 10/10, and would recommend to anyone who’s looking for a good scare.

Best book ever. for real

Very long but we’ll worth the trip. I’m happy I read this unabridged version in full. At times it was rough, the story is great but it is soooo long. I’d say overall it’s worth it to experience and really get to know the characters. Don’t watch the movie before you read the book if you have the choice. It’s much better to create your own images of the landscape and characters for this tale. The movie is great and does too good of a job at creating the chance to use your imagination

Best book ever!!!!. I’ve read it several times. Kinda scary now with the Coronovirus!

Epic!. This book is so good!!! It is interesting, suspenseful and hard to put down because it is so well written. Thank you Steven King!!

Pretty Much Defines “Epic”. Amazing, exhaustive character development makes one build a relationship with these people over the long time it takes to read this book. Reading this book is a lived experience that is very unique and probably life-changing in subtle ways.

Great novel. Read this a while ago but such a great book and well worth a read.

Bruh. I inhaled this book, it took some time to gather all the characters, but once it got rolling, it was hard to put down. Character development was great, the story flowed effortlessly and it made this quarantine a bit more livable. Being able to dive into a world that is in a worse reality than your own, made COVID a bit lighter on me.

The Stand. Enjoyed the read as much as my previous times i have read this novel

Good thrills. Really good scares and honestly creepy. Nightmares all night expected. Nothing less is worthy of King. My dad always told me he liked this one. My favorite of all time is The Shining. Definitely up next!

Still Kings best work. The unabridged version is worth the time it takes to read. King takes extra effort to paint the post apocalyptic world he has created in sweeping detail.

Wow!. The Stand has changed with time. Now I wish I haven’t donated my old hard cover to the library. After reading this version I would love to go back and read the original again. Just like any other book by the Man I loved it with the original characters and the way it was more about the people of the story and a lot of information about them.

The best!. This book is one of the best reads. I could not put it down

Great. Truly legendary!

Good book but so long. This book burns you out. It’s long and sensual and I’m a fan of his work. I’m happy I read it but golly it’s just so so long. Some parts could be way shorter and I know it’s the longer version but wow. I recommend reading the shorter version because this one fries your brain.

A long masterpiece of the human condition. Stephan King writes a very long but very entertaining novel of a plague that destroys humanity and a struggle between the light and the dark. But most of all it examines real people (fictional but you get the point) being caught in said battle. Its a good look at what people do backed into a corner, for all the good and bad reasons that we humans would do it. I feel this book is more a think piece more than a horror novel, and for that very reason I would whole heartedly recommend this read.

Best Book I’ve ever read. The Stand is the best book that i’ve ever read and one of the few that i’ll read over and over.

Stephen’s Books are my hero’s Sorry Stephen is my hero. One of my top favorite books by Stephen King I couldn’t resist getting it!!! - I’m obsessed with Stephen King😉

It’s a classic for a reason. I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would, one of my favorite reads in a long time.

Still his best. Re-reading in a post-Covid world gives even greater pause. Besides, it still is a remarkable page-turner epic!

My favorite book of all time!. This story of a virus wiping out most of humanity struck me as truth and possibility years ago when I first read it. And then came COVID and the most hideous so-called leader the US has ever known. So the battle between good and evil continues. Don’t let the number of pages keep you from reading this book. It is amazing writing and a joy to read.

Excellent Book. Although I have only read three Stephen King books, this one was definitely my favorite. The book was long but could have been even longer. The character development was so good that Stephen could have made this a trilogy at least. This is definitely worth a read in my opinion. I wasn’t a huge fan of Stephen King’s work before I read this one.

The Stand. Stephen King at his finest. This book is epic! The end of our world. Good vs. Evil The good moving toward a savior. This book will always be my favorite tome as only Stephen King could write it.

Phenomenal. This book is awesome and a must read!!

EPIC. Stephen King has a way with words. This story flowed. Excellent. A disturbing tale but written so well. Highly recommend.

Seriously good. I guess I’m obsessed with this story as I’ve read it 3 or 5 times already. Sometimes people think that Stephen Kings stories are too long but if you stick with it until the end it all dovetails nicely, and looking back you can’t see where he could have cut things out and still have it be so satisfying and complete. It is also amazing how much this story parallels what is happening with the Covid-19 virus today (mutating virus, no vaccine possible). Anyways, besides his book It, I have never been so fascinated by one of his stories (just so you know, my first and second time reading this was before the corona virus). I also went as far as spending $70.00 to get a copy of the original edition from 1978 so I could compare it to the expanded version and see what was cut out, and was pleasantly surprised to find some completely different stuff in it that’s not in the expansion. Like he says in his authors note, nothing that goes in a different direction, or characters acting differently, but different bits of dialogue that make me satisfied that is was a good investment 😉

The Stand. I wanna read it again

Amazing. Love it. So well written.

It’s Okay. Read quickly, despite its length. Not as fascinating as when I read it as a kid. Changing the year to 1990 creates some odd discrepancies in the slang used, music references, clothing descriptions, etc.

Almost like COVID 19. It’s great and kinda left a cliff hanging. I really hope he make book two.

Top 5 Fave SK Book. I have an EXTREMELY difficult time picking a favorite SK book, but The Stand is in the top 5 for sure! Read it.

Loved it !. I was obsessed with this book! Couldn’t put it down! It’s definitely a classic

My Favourite Stephen King book. I have read The Stand 5 times and always enjoy it but every time I read it The Stand it’s still scary

Definitive king. Without a doubt the best Stephen King ever written. I have read this many times since it was originally published and always marvel at its ability to stay completely relevant to our political technological and social times. This book is utterly horrific, tragic though has heart that beats on and on and on. King at his all time finest.

Over twenty five years and still my fav. Nothing I have read, before or since, has grabbed me so quickly and completely as The Stand. I reread it every once in a while and it still has the same chilling effect. Totally engrossing, like a favourite book should be.

The Stand. My favourite book other than the DarkTower series..... But most books serve the beam... Portia 2013

One of my favorite King novel. I've read a lot of Stephen King novels and I wouldn't hesitate to put The Stand on my top-5 list, maybe even in the top-3. Lots of beautifully-written characters, a lot of heart and food for thought. Highly recommended!

The Stand. The Best, Definitely One I would have to have on a Deserted Island. A Must Read for any King Fan.

Great Read. Still his best book this is my 2rd time to reed it and 1st on a IPad King is a master of Horror and it will scare you too

!!. Beautifully written. A battle between good and evil so detailed and character driven that I felt attached to some of them. Read this book!

The Stand, in my humble opinion is the finest novel from Stephan King.. I first read this book in the 70’s and the first reading of this book, I read in one continuous sitting! It took me 26 hours but I accomplished the reading. The Stand, was a novel that I adore. The characters and the missions and happening surrounding ALL of the characters. Read The Stand. It will thrill y’all. Debra McCauley Canadian King Fan 🧓🏻 🇨🇦 🦫 ❤️ (👅)😉

Big and great book.. What a great epic story. The only book I read twice. Stephen King at his best.

Amazing. Wish they could do a movie/tv program that does it justice. So enjoyable.

A long read, but a good read.. A riveting and introspective look into human life and the inevitable cycle we find ourselves caught it. It will have you on the edge of your seat, yearning for more. Many times.

Excellent read. I couldn’t put this book down, and now that I’m done I feel hungry for more! The way Stephen can describe a scene or location makes you feel like your there, in the room with the well defined characters he has created. Highly recommend reading. Added bonus: reading this book through our own real life pandemic helped it hit a little closer to home!

The stand. One of my all time favourites

never stop.. well, for a lil while, but not for long. Always my favourite
