Inside Delta Force by Eric Haney Book Summary

Now the inspiration for the CBS Television drama, "The Unit."

Delta Force. They are the U.S. Army's most elite top-secret strike force. They dominate the modern battlefield, but you won't hear about their heroics on CNN. No headlines can reveal their top-secret missions, and no book has ever taken readers inside—until now. Here, a founding member of Delta Force takes us behind the veil of secrecy and into the action-to reveal the never-before-told story of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-D (Delta Force).

He is a master of espionage, trained to take on hijackers, terrorists, hostage takers, and enemy armies. He can deploy by parachute or arrive by commercial aircraft. Survive alone in hostile cities. Speak foreign languages fluently. Strike at enemy targets with stunning swiftness and extraordinary teamwork. He is the ultimate modern warrior: the Delta Force Operator.

In this dramatic behind-the-scenes chronicle, Eric Haney, one of the founding members of Delta Force, takes us inside this legendary counterterrorist unit. Here, for the first time, are details of the grueling selection process—designed to break the strongest of men—that singles out the best of the best: the Delta Force Operator.

With heart-stopping immediacy, Haney tells what it's really like to enter a hostage-held airplane. And from his days in Beirut, Haney tells an unforgettable tale of bodyguards and bombs, of a day-to-day life of madness and beauty, and of how he and a teammate are called on to kill two gunmen targeting U.S. Marines at the Beirut airport. As part of the team sent to rescue American hostages in Tehran, Haney offers a first-person description of that failed mission that is a chilling, compelling account of a bold maneuver undone by chance—and a few fatal mistakes.

From fighting guerrilla warfare in Honduras to rescuing missionaries in Sudan and leading the way onto the island of Grenada, Eric Haney captures the daring and discipline that distinguish the men of Delta Force. Inside Delta Force brings honor to these singular men while it puts us in the middle of action that is sudden, frightening, and nonstop around the world.

Excellent. Great book, I'm sure to read it at least twice more haha

Great great read!. I have read the book and also bought it on Audible. Both are great but if you had to choose go with the Audible version, the naration is perfect. I've listened to it three times and plan to again.

Impressive!. Hard to put my iBook down! Half of me wants to express how I want more of this to read, and another half says no, this should be classified still.

Inside Delta Force. Magnificent.

Awesome. Mr Haney’s book & subsiquent TV series “The Unit” are awesome!

Amazing Read!. Eric Haney is not only a tough as nails soldier. He's also a formidable writer! Beyond well written.

This book is a must. My military career began in 84, and my little building (Sadly torn down now) was at the corner of Gruber and Butner. Daily i would see "The Boys" run by in small groups of 2 or 3. One day during a failed AWADS jump (they always fail), 2 miles from the trail edge of Sicily in what was, in effect, an impact range, I was gathering my equipment, trying to orient myself as to where the hell I was. Out of the misty rainy afternoon, came 6 men wearing all kinds of uniforms, equipment, carrying weapons of all sorts. 'What the hell is this? Who are they? Who carries a British Enfield?" I asked myself silently. The only common denominator to them was the Hockey Helmets, and the OD green/black American flag velcroed to their shoulder sleeve. As they ran by, one looked at me calmly and pointed back behind me "That way Troop. Off you go now." Even now, i think of that bizarre day and just laugh. I can't place here all of the other places where I have intersected with these men. But as the son of a soldier, who grew up in the 70s and enlisted for the 82d Abn, and entered Active duty as a result of Grenada, this book was a good read. A lot of small minutae I never knew, but had suspected was confirmed. Emotionally, the loss of the TV show The Unit came at a time when I was on (what would come to be my ) last deployment. I came to view that loss the same as I would compartmentalize a loss of a fellow friend. As a postscript, one day I would like to see a chapter on how the Author has dealt with his ghosts. Even though a man may be at peace with his Maker, the ugly side is that we still live with our memories, and with the faces. Thank you Cotton Mouth. Your book helped me. Witch Doctor "Behold whom shall I send? Then I replied: Here I am Lord. Send me"

Inside Delta Force. Great book. Highly educational, makes one only respect the elite fighting and intelligence forces that much more...what they do - how much they sacrifice to keep us (and the world) safe. Well written and detailed in all the right areas. Loved the TV series The Unit which was modeled after the book. Thanks Mr. Haney for a great book, but also to you and your brothers at arms for your commitment(s).

Marvelous. Great Book!!!

Interesting Read. Very good and interesting book. Been trying to find other non-fictional books on this unit, however, they are hard to find. Wish the author would write a "follow-up".

Inside Delta Force. Great read! Hooah!

Inside delta force. Outstanding!

Great!. I read this book in two days. Once I started I could not put it down. Very interesting to hear the story of Delta from someone who was there at the beginning. Well worth the money.

Inside Delta Force. This book was an excellent read. I do not read a lot, but was very impressed with the tv show The Unit decided I needed to check it out it's origins. Moves fast, good detail without bogging down the story with technicalities, I only wish there were several hundred more pages to read!

Inside delta force. Great read

Inside Delta Force. This is hands down the best book I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It grabs you from the first words and keeps hold of you until the very last.

Best book. This book was one of the best military books I'v ever read I have learned so much from this book I will use some of what I've learned in my brigade best warrior board these guy's are truly amazing I envy these guy's I went through basic training in the seventies it was very challenging selection was unbelievable I went though drill sergeant school and drill sergeant leader school it was a cake walk compared to what Haney went through thanks guys for your hard work and dedication I love America and the United States Military your names shall shine CSM Minix 321st SB last campaign 0911 Alasad Iraq GOD BLESS the US service members

Great read! Buy without hesitation.. This is an all around great book. It describes the Unit's selection process and training, purpose and vision, and real life missions of what some refer to as "Delta Force". It is well written and hard to put down. One chapter is 143 pages, on my font setting, and I thought it would take me a few days to read but I read it straight through. I was sad when the book ended; I wish Eric Haney would write a part 2. The TV show "The Unit" on CBS is based, more like inspired, by this book. One part I specifically liked is when it described some of their intelligence gathering training, techniques, and exercise with the FBI. I will not spoil it for you and let you read about it. This is one book I would probably read again sometime in the near future.

Great read. Most people’s heroes are sports players or entertainers. These guys are mine. Thank you to all of the special ops personnel past, current and future.

Great read!!. One of the best reads I've ever come across. I realize it's cliche but I laughed, cried, got angry, but mostly fortified an undying respect for the men that occupy the highest echelons of the military elite, all the way down through the fighting ranks . And I thank my God for their willingness to take skills that are beyond most of our comprehension and put them to use for good, and for others! Eric, thank you to you and your mates. Thanks!

Outstanding. Wonderfully written... One of the best books I've read.

Great Story. A very detailed account about the formation and the early years of Delta Force...great stories.

Great book about good men. I loved this book. Big fan of "The Unit" TV series, so I had to read the story that inspired it. I was active duty during Viet Nam and considered trying for Selection but suffered a major knee injury that prevented that. Have a good 'un, CSM Haney...

Awesome Book. I will say this is by far one of the greatest military stories I have read. Eric takes you inside and behind the lines of combat. His perspective is thrilling and engaging. I am honored to know he was in the Delta Force and protected me as an American. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn about one of the real Heroes that are behind our Military. God Bless them and their families. God Bless the USA!

Well written. I was really surprised at how much I liked this book. The author is extremely honest and very detailed in his narrative. It is very easy to picture the scenes he speaks about. Great read.

Good book. Good book… worths one’s time to read. God bless the US.

Haney nails it. Haney's account gives a great account of the late-70's, early 80's Delta. Obviously, things have changed since then, but the core things described are still the bread and butter of Unit.

Courage. Incredible story, written from the inside on the birth and life within the Delta Force. Although somewhat dated, the book keeps moving and maintains the readers interest throughout. A must read for military buffs,
