Clapton by Eric Clapton Book Summary

With striking intimacy and candor, Eric Clapton tells the story of his eventful and inspiring life in this poignant and honest autobiography.

More than a rock star, Eric Clapton is an icon, a living embodiment of the history of rock music. Well known for his reserve in a profession marked by self-promotion, flamboyance, and spin, he now chronicles, for the first time, his remarkable personal and professional journeys.

Born illegitimate in 1945 and raised by his grandparents, Eric never knew his father and, until the age of nine, believed his actual mother to be his sister. In his early teens his solace was the guitar, and his incredible talent would make him a cult hero in the clubs of Britain and inspire devoted fans to scrawl “Clapton is God” on the walls of London’s Underground. With the formation of Cream, the world's first supergroup, he became a worldwide superstar, but conflicting personalities tore the band apart within two years. His stints in Blind Faith, in Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and in Derek and the Dominos were also short-lived but yielded some of the most enduring songs in history, including the classic “Layla.”

During the late sixties he played as a guest with Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, as well as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and longtime friend George Harrison. It was while working with the latter that he fell for George’s wife, Pattie Boyd, a seemingly unrequited love that led him to the depths of despair, self-imposed seclusion, and drug addiction. By the early seventies he had overcome his addiction and released the bestselling album 461 Ocean Boulevard, with its massive hit “I Shot the Sheriff.” He followed that with the platinum album Slowhand, which included “Wonderful Tonight,” the touching love song to Pattie, whom he finally married at the end of 1979. A short time later, however, Eric had replaced heroin with alcohol as his preferred vice, following a pattern of behavior that not only was detrimental to his music but contributed to the eventual breakup of his marriage.

In the eighties he would battle and begin his recovery from alcoholism and become a father. But just as his life was coming together, he was struck by a terrible blow: His beloved four-year-old son, Conor, died in a freak accident. At an earlier time Eric might have coped with this tragedy by fleeing into a world of addiction. But now a much stronger man, he took refuge in music, responding with the achingly beautiful “Tears in Heaven.”

Clapton is the powerfully written story of a survivor, a man who has achieved the pinnacle of success despite extraordinary demons. It is one of the most compelling memoirs of our time.

Great book. Excellent read.. anyone who loves music and especially the blues will enjoy this autobiography. I really enjoyed it. Mr. Clapton is raw and honest and flawed and talented and driven.. Couldn’t put it down!

Clapton :::::: Autobiography. Well written , very honest, great guitarist ,talented musician . Fascinating interesting life story:: love his music a gifted ones::: but failure in life and successful musical life ,was overshadowed by his addiction::::recuperated and played great music :::: he's the best example for the groups who play music around the world 🎶🎶👀🙏🏻👍🏻‼️📀💁🏻🎶💁🏻Highly Recommend this 📚 :::::

Clapton. Becoming a teenager in the late 60s, I became a big fan of Cream. When I got my own jukebox in 1972, I had several of their songs on it. Eric Clapton awesome job on this autobiography! That only was he truthful about all the low points in his life, he was also very humble about all the high points. His music is legendary and now this book will also become a legend. I'm proud to have it in my collection! Enjoy your family, Eric, and may you live long and see your girls get married off.

Awesome!!!!. My favorite book, ever, period.

Soul bearing and mesmerizing. One of the most revealing and entertaining books I've read. Eric Clapton is blues/rock at it's finest, time tested and better than ever!

From Rags to Riches to Happiness. Having been a fan of E.C. since his Cream days, I found this to be an fascinating account of his (ahem) "interesting" life. If you also are a fan, this book will give you some intimate insight into the man. After reading the epilogue however, I couldn't help but to conclude that the book was written more for cathartic purposes than to let the public into his personal life. While this is not to say that most, if not all, "Claptonians" will be entertained and informed. Personally, I truly enjoyed the book and its inspiring underlying story of finding one's true self.

Honest!. Loved it! Surprising honest and detailed. Warts and All!

The true man. I love how open and honest he is about his music addictions and God. Everything I have read or heard up until now has been 90% untrue. I love the book and the artist all the more for his honesty. Thank you Eric for giving a fan a true glimpse into your life and yourself.

Interesting and enjoyable. I'm not a great fan of autobiographies but I really enjoyed this. Eric tells his story in a spell binding fashion, baring his soul and airing his worst times as well as his greatest. That he is still alive is, in hindsight, quite amazing in itself! His passion for music and in particular the blues is infectious. Thoroughly enjoyable start to finish.

Clapton. A truly introspective autobiography. Clapton tells all, good, bad and with a unique style that seems like a long conversation with a favorite loved one. We can hope that he is not through writing about his, most interesting life.

Clapton is one of God's miracles!. The truth and honesty of e.c.'s story makes it a wonderful read. A story of recovery that touches you in your soul. The gratitude that comes through in his story, helps all of us that have struggled with addictions and have found a Higher Power that works in our life. The promises found in the Big Book of AA really come true and thanks E.C. for reminding us!!

An eye opening read. It's just amazing that such a gifted musician could be such a failure at life. What he achieved in his successful musical life, was overshadowed by his addictions. But amazingly, E C was able to conquer his demons, and find true love. His remarkable journey to a happy family life was his real key to success. He turned his life around, and found ways to pay tribute to the early blues pioneers who had paved the way to E C's love for the blues. I enjoyed the many stories of my musical heroes , and the influences that they had on each other. All of the albums he made with other blues legends, BB King, Steve Winwood and J J Cale, are Eric Clapton at his best. Can' t wait to hear who his next collaboration will be with!

Great book. Wonderful

Remarkable Man; Amazing Career. Eric is surprisingly humble and awkwardly shy. His honesty in telling his life stories is astonishing as he reveals the details of so many adventures and painful events that happened throughout his lifetime. He’ll be performing tonight in Detroit, to which I will go (very excited) and he’s now 77, I believe. Thank you Eric!
