A grate dark book. I imagine this to become a movie. Perhaps something like "Sin City."

Only four star average?. How can this only have a four star average review?!? Surely, this is the best of Chandlers work and the greatest of all detective novels? Certainly I'd be glad to hear of any better books!

Brilliant. Chandler is one of the greats. No doubt about it.

A master at the height of his powers. Chandler at his best, with Marlowe at his finest — the movie with Bogart and Bacall is terrific, but the book is even better, because Chandler had the advantage of unlimited dialogue…. It really does not get any better than this in terms of the noir novel.

Book Seemed Endless with Unsavory Characters. While the writing style is undoubtedly unique, the story is weak and not compelling. I would probably opt for one of his other works.

Timeless. This novel is an absolute classic. I didn't realize until the publisher's note at the end that it was Chandler's first novel. The writing style at times will put the reader in awe of its excellence. The plot is exquisite. Any fan of the genre should read this!

The Big Sleep. I recently read this novel for an AdvancedLiterature class. I must say I was quite taken by it. My essay compared this novel to Joseph Contad's The Heart of Darkness. There are more than a few similarities.

Made for Bogart. I see Bogart saying every word.

Chandler’s Masterpiece. If Raymond Chandler wrote only this book, he would still be considered a master of the genre. Tightly plotted, with not a word to spare, and an engaging storyline. It is his best book.

Outstanding. The movie never quite resolves what happened. The last section of the book is not covered. To learn this, you must read and enjoy.
