As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Wow. I love this book I can read it all day and count it as a great day

Awesome. My first King novel and it was very good.

Loved it. I loved every second of this book it was awesome and way better than the movie. I saw the movie at a very young age and didn’t realize that it was based off of a book. I love Stephen King and this book might actually be my favorite!!

Excellent book. A great book, from start to finish. I think Stephen King really hit the big leagues with this book. I liked both Carrie and Salem’s Lot but The Shining took King to another level and I think he would stay at the level up until It. Very different from Stanley Kubrick’s movie. I’m actually glad I saw the movie before reading the book, for if I did the opposite I think I would have hated the movie. Anyway, The Shining is a must read.

Keeps your attention. A well written tale that unwinds slowly, The Shining keeps you reading. With plot points that repeat adding additional details to make a complete picture, you are guessing what comes next and are rarely right:

Amazing!. I could not put this book down! Read it and saw the movie immediately after and the book is 10x better!

Psychological Horror. King combines supernatural elements with psychology to bring a family down. Masterfully done. The movie is only a shadow of the book.

Skip the Movie.. I had seen the movie more than a dozen times before reading the book. After reading the book, I was dismayed that so many hours spent watching the movie were hours I could never have back. Read the book first. Then, if you are still curious, watch the movie. You won’t regret it.

Good. Hi

Amazing. This book gave a complete outcome of the Shining, let’s you really see how bad the movie was produced. A book of course will always be better than the movie, but in this case the movie left out lots of Stephen Kings book, including the Ending, the Overlooks actual outside hedge animals, roque court, playground. There wasn’t a maze at all. So many changes made by the movie after reading the book made the book scarier than the movie. A must read for sure!

Vivid and beautiful. The language is unbelievable, and the voice is so strong you don't just identify with the characters, you feel them and are part of the family. It makes it that much harder to accept the events. Couldn't put it down!

My all-time favorite Stephen King shocker!. I saw Stanley Kubrick’s classic movie adaptation years before I read this book, but it didn’t stop me from being very disappointed that the movie wasn’t a much more faithful adaptation. This book is a wonderfully spooky, truly terrifying ghost story, which is one of my favorite kinds of horror stories to read! Here’s a tip: Anyone looking for a faithful adaptation should check out the miniseries. With the exception of one terrible CGI-effect involving hedge animals, it’s a great movie! A warning for anyone who decides to watch it(if you can find the DVD for sale anywhere.) Watch out for the chilling scene involving hotel room 217! It’s just as terrifying onscreen as it was in the book!

FANTASTIC!!. FANTASTIC!!! I loved reading it far better than movie and mini-series

Just read it. I thought I loved the movie but it’s a pale comparison to this book. Wonderfully heartbreaking and beautifully written.

The book is always better..... I knew the story from seeing the movie growing up. I always liked the movie, the book is much better. I especially liked Wendy in the book better.

Too long and too many meaningless details. King writes too many details that do not add to the story. Be prepared to skip entire sections and even chapters without losing the plot.

Another Steven King Bestseller. Steven King is not an author, he is a story teller, and he hit it out of the park with this book!

Redrum. Qwet

AMAZING! A must read!. So I saw the movie for the first time about a month ago and was like, "WOW. I have to read the book now!" So I read the book and was not disappointed. The movie left so much out. This is my new favorite book and Stephen King is my new favorite author. For anyone who is contemplating on whether to read this book, it is a GREAT read!

Colorful. Awesome descriptive writing. The story really comes alive. One of King's greatest.

Really. Enjoy it

Stephen King’s The Shining: The true masterpiece of modern horror!. Having revered The Shining as one of my favorite horror films, I finally decided to read the source material for such a good but different film. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that this book was hundreds of times better than the movie. New layers of depth added to all characters and plot points. Being able to point at the ballroom scene in the book and compare it to the movie was a treat. It has so much more meaning in the book, and going back and watching the movie, it adds more depth to those scenes. A read that everyone should enjoy!!

Awesome. Favorite book and movie!!

The shining. The shining is a phenomenal book by far it blends horror and thriller really well I love it

Classic King thriller!. What a classic setting for a really scary idea. Love the characters & for me it’s the best book of the King library no doubt. It’s got so much more to offer then even the movie does so i think it’s a must read in any order u want.

Great book but not for squeamish people. I thought this book was very interesting but also spiked my interest into Stephen King's books Disclaimer: The Shining might not be for squeamish types and definitely not for younger audiences Great book overall though, look forward to other books by Stephen King! :)

One of the Best. This is seriously one of the best books of all time. Thrilling and spooky. Not at all like the movie in the best ways possible.

Better than the movie!. I decided to read this book after having already seen the movie at least twenty times. By the end, I had always felt like there were questions and uncertainties that were still left unanswered. Finally, I realized that those questions were getting in the way of my satisfaction in the end. After finally reading the book, let me tell you that it is way scarier, crazier, and textually richer in ways that the movie could never be. Frankly, there were parts that scared the hell out of me (the twins in the movie have nothing on the horrors in this). It definitely answered my questions and was so gripping I could hardly put it down. If you like the movie but are looking to turn the terror notch up, then read this book. You won't regret it.

Good book. Even the movie is good

A++. This was amazing. It has now became one of my favorites.

REDRUM. This is by far my favorite Stephen king book and my favorite book. I’m 13 and I enjoyed this book so much I read other Stephen king books and this is by far the best. The suspense, mystery, and horrifying scenes that you can picture in your mind is absolutely a masterpiece Stephen king is by far the greatest writer of all time. LOVED THIS BOOK.

Fantastic. Amazing book. Much better than the movie for sure.

Just one. more time cus I love it so very scary. No matter how many times I’ve read it.

Wow.. This truly is Stephen King in his prime. The story progressed beautifully and gave a great background on all characters and made us understand them all even if we couldn’t relate to their lives personally. With understanding the characters’ lives and background, you begin to attach yourself to them and maybe even root for their well-being; but it all comes crashing down terribly quickly in a deadly flourish of self-pity, hatred, confusion, terror and love. The most surprising message I can take away from this work of art regards the surprisingly awesome drive of the human spirit to fight through adversity and pain, on the greater search for peace, love and happiness. It is a relatively quick read with relatively short chapters but it does not spare any details whatsoever. I will definitely be reading this again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great Stephen King novel.

Gave Me Some Nightmare Fuel. Enjoyed this read and comparing it to the Stanley Kubrick adaptation. I understand that things had to be changed to appeal and make sense in a movie. This story has so much more depth to it than the movie does and has me thinking so much about the roles and relationships between a father and son.

The Shining. Awesome book one of kings best would recommend it to people who like to get scared

Better than the movie. I would highly suggest anyone who liked the movie to read the book. 10/10🙂

My Favorite Book. Couldn’t put down! Stephen King’s books never surprise me but this is by far my favorite!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ PAGE TURNER!!! COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN!!! THE FILM INDUSTRY REALLY DIDN’T DO THIS MASTERPIECE JUSTICE!!!

The Shining. I watched the movie version as a child and it was instantly one of my favorites. Watching it as an adult is not the same as the film leaves a lot to question. I decided to read the book and I'm happy that I did. As always, the book outdoes the movie and goes beyond the surface that the movie only scratches. Definitely a must read!

Great read. The book was amazingly suspenseful and leaves nothing wanted.

Heeere's Johnny!. I am sorry, but I just have to say it. The whole time I read the book, I was looking forward to the old "Heeere's Johnny!" Instead, I got something entirely different. Jack Torrance turned out to be like you and me. He was simply a man with a troubled past hoping for a brighter present and future. Plus, Jack actually tried to reconnect with his family while writing his latest work of art and looking after the deserted hotel. Also, there was more to the haunted hotel than just mischievious spirits waiting around to take you by surprise. I could just picture the party from an earlier year in the life of the Overlook, not to mention those hedge animals. Man! they sure crept me out as much as they did Jack and Mr. Halloran. Maybe even more. The movie may be memorable, but I will always think of the novel when it comes to mind.

Must Read!. My second Stephen King book down and I have to say so far this one takes the cake an absolutely amazing journey from start to finish. Highly recommended!!

Excellent. Excellent book, a quick read.

Amazing. This book is one of the best books I've ever read. It was always super hard to put it down. You feel everything that the family goes through and you truly feel like you're there experiencing it with them. Absolutely amazing.

Heart ache. This book is far more than spooky scares. The shining touches on that rare kind of scary that is TRULY horrifying, the kind that breaks your heart. It stings. Again and again.

The Overlook. This is an amazing book. Easily one of my favorite King books. I can now see why the first movie didn’t do it justice. You cannot replace books. Getting to know the characters. Excited to read Doctor Sleep next.

What else is there to say?. It’s not a complicated judgement. This book is one of the single greatest pieces of literature there is.

King’s Best!!. Favorite book so far by Stephen King! The book was so much better than the movie in my opinion but I do think the movie did very good at picking the characters based on their descriptions and personalities in the book.

The Shining. I just finished The Shining and it is the first book I've ever read from Stephen King. This book is literally perfect. Every word of every page is so well written it seems impossible. I will definitely be reading more from Stephen King! Easy 5/5!

It’s all about the writing!. This was my second time reading this book, but first time in English. I read it in Portuguese, in 1980, when I was 16 years old. I enjoyed it a lot more than I can remember. It’s a great horror story combining natural and supernatural, complex characters and an eerie atmosphere. The writing and the storytelling are simply superb! The story shows that no one is free from the past and the ways we are haunted by it. Yes, this is more than a horror story. The development is slow, but the writing is super engaging.

Perfect. The book is perfect it’s by far the best Stephen king’s book

Fantastic need a hard copy for my library. I loved this book! The characters are so well rounded and interesting. The not so slow decent into madness with Jack was mesmerizing to follow. I am sad I didn’t read this sooner!

The Shining Review. The Shining, the book can make you feel scared at times, but also a little Happy. King writes down Pure Perfection, he used Horror to keep the Reader at the Edge of their Seat While they Read along. If you haven't experienced Fright before, this book will change your way of looking at things. I Recommend this Book to Young Adults who are looking for a little Fright.

Great but boring. The story is really good and Well written but some moments are very boring. Even thought it’s far to be the longest Stephen King’s book i’ve read it still feels longer than ever.
