The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Now a major motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio

By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids waiting at home and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king, here, in Jordan Belfort’s own words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called the Wolf of Wall Street. In the 1990s, Belfort became one of the most infamous kingpins in American finance: a brilliant, conniving stock-chopper who led his merry mob on a wild ride out of Wall Street and into a massive office on Long Island. It’s an extraordinary story of greed, power, and excess that no one could invent: the tale of an ordinary guy who went from hustling Italian ices to making hundreds of millions—until it all came crashing down.

Praise for The Wolf of Wall Street

“Raw and frequently hilarious.”—The New York Times

“A rollicking tale of [Jordan Belfort’s] rise to riches as head of the infamous boiler room Stratton Oakmont . . . proof that there are indeed second acts in American lives.”—Forbes

“A cross between Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities and Scorsese’s GoodFellas . . . Belfort has the Midas touch.”—The Sunday Times (London)

“Entertaining as pulp fiction, real as a federal indictment . . . a hell of a read.”—Kirkus Reviews

Better then the movie. Great great book well written

Captivating!. Not one to usually read but this book was defienatly a page turner! Very good! Can't wait to see the movie! Got 3 of my friends to read it. They all loved it. Finished it in 3 days. Get it!

Porn writing!. The author portrays stockbrokers as porn mouthed losers! This book is a waste of time and about the worst book I have ever read! Lurid details, crude talk, lousy story and scum writing. Don't buy this book unless you want to sink your mind into filth!

Review. Jordan wrote a great book that was an easy and hard to put down. I think he tried to give the reader a realistic insight into his life, his business, his relationships and his addictions. He also tried to draw us in to sympathize and empathize with him. Personally I didn't buy it. He was a low life con man drug addict that ripped people off with impunity and without remorse. He ruined many lives of the people who worked for him and had even less regard for his wife and children. His so called generosity was always to his benefit so I also can't buy his justification for his throwing money at everyone and everything but he put a great spin on it.

Compelling read. I couldn't put this book down. It is a wildly disparate ride of genius and debauchery. Don't be distracted from the opportunity to glean Jordan's genius. The 5% got him into huge marital, drug abuse, and ethics/legal problems. The 95% is sheer business genius in salesmanship and team building/management.

One of the very best I have read. I learned so many things about: the brokerage business, Swiss banking, and more than anything drugs and their devastating effects and consequences. The part where Jordan is seduced by the Nadine while playing with chandler is far more sexy than any in Fifty shades of gray! ;)))))

The Wolf of Wallstreet. Good read... Jordan did a great job in writing his book. I saw the movie before reading it and through enjoyed his adventures. Being a account executive for an advertising company I can relate to the Wolf he is like myself a super salesman. The Legend

A rip roaring ride!. This book was outrageous, and outrageously good. I don't know how much rewriting by editors had to be done, but Belfort is a fantastic writer. Talk about a page turner! One of his friends suggested he start writing full time and even if it was all sales training, productivity and self advancement, it would still be worth reading. He's got a terrific sense of humor and I had to laugh at the hilarious way he made the most egregious things sound like a comedy act. This portion of his life was truly horrendous, his behavior was unforgivably bad, but rather than whine and drip remorse, he chose to make it entertaining. He is remorseful and full of regret though, so he is still human, even with the comedic way he chose to portray the events of those years. I could go on for pages about how good this was and you have to read this before you see it to get an idea of the business side of it, but I'll end by saying I just hope he writes more.

The Wolf of Wall Street. For me, The Wolf of Wall Street was a waste of time and money, even at the discounted purchase price. It's an exercise that displays the emotional immaturity of an unrepentant addict (well, a bunch of them) and not much else. It reads like a conversation among a bunch of drunks and addicts engaged in a game of "Yeah, Well Top This."

The best. I watched the movie and then read the book both were so amazing I couldn’t imagine it being any other way it’s like it was made up

Wolf of Wall Street. Jourdan must have had an excellent ghost writer on this book because it reads well and portrays the character of the "Wolf" in detail. Drug abuse is rampant, people abuse is rampant, yet the reader still roots for him. It is a totally immoral book, but totally interesting. Makes you think that the old morals have considerable value in making lives happier rather than descending down to the level of wolves.

Wolf on wall st. I do not consider myself prudish or old fashioned but I found this book extremely offensive. Gratuitious lurid tales of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. He even writes about his wife with explicit sexual overtones. His self glorification of a hedonistic life is repulsive.

Took forever to get into.... I almost put this book down. It was about chapter 10 or 11 before I could get into it. While the amount of drug talk seemed overwhelming, the ending is quite good. All in all, decent.

Awesome Book!. Fantastic and a thrill ride from beginning to end. Couldn't put it down and didn't want it to ever finish!

The Wolf of Wall Street. Unreal. An individual who is a genius, made millions of dollars and screws up his life over drugs. Hard to feel an remorse for his actions, and at times during the book, you wish he ODs with hid druggy buddies.

Awesome!. Amazing book! Finished just in time! Can't wait to see Leo's portrayal on the big screen!

Where real life outshines Hollywood. If you didn’t know this was a memoir of the greed and excess of the pre-internet age you’d swear this was a overblown view of the late 1980’s and 90’s.

Great book. The story was hard to believe but the writer was so sincere and felt authentic. I enjoyed reading the entire book.

Better than the movie. The best

AWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I must confess that “The Wolf of Wall Street” was offensive, opprobrious, deeply deplorable, ham-fisted, tin-eared, climatic, anti-climatic and undeniably FANTASTIC AT EVERY TURN. What a character this Jordan Belfort is. So realistic, so tautly conceived is he, that I’d half-believe he’s as real as the author himself! As the titular character, Mr. Belfort takes the world of stocks and bonds by storm, only to become the subject of a vicious, litigious witch-hunt by the fédéràlés of the US government. I recall that I had a similar run-in with the law back when I wintered in the mystical port of Miami. Having invested a considerable fortune into a small Columbian import business, I was accosted by federal agents whilst en route to Cuba. We were transporting a rare and expensive herbal remedy made from the powdered bones of aboriginals called “cocaine.” The powers that be threw a very real book at me, and that was the last time I invested in anything but reading lights and high-density sluice gates. But that’s neither here nor there. My apologies, fellow Amazonians, I digress. If you seek a sweeping tale about the evils of greed, lust and ‘ludes, “The Wolf of Wall Street” more than fills the ticket. After, you might wish to experience mine own take on power and corruption, boldly titled “The Spoils of Babylon,” airing this January in its epic mini-series glory on IFC. Set against the backdrop of every major event in American history (some yet unwritten), “The Spoils of Babylon” is one part tearjerker, two parts jaw-dropper, and all parts mind-blower. Just imagine if “The Wolf of Wall Street” took place in reality and starred the likes of Dirk Snowfield, Lauroeighiya Samcake and the legendary Sir Richard Driftwood. Yes, that Sir Richard Driftwood. With great admiration, Eric Jonrosh, author of “The Spoils of Babylon,” set to air on IFC this January 9th, 2014

No Justice. 550 pages of a guy bragging about how horrible he treats everyone around him, how he takes advantage of people, how he cheats so he can waste more money than anyone would know what to do with, and why you should feel sorry for him. All to be capped off with a rushed ending with barely any consequences. I bought this book hoping it would be about someone on Wall St getting what they deserve, instead I got a book about how disconnected from humanity these guys are and how little it matters. Waste of time and $4.99.

.. This is a really Good book, after reading about all the crazy things Jordan did it's hard to believe he's still alive. This book reads like a nonfiction and sometimes it's hard to believe everything's true. I recommend it

Cool. Luv it

What a despicable person.. Jordan Belfort served some time but it wasn't enough.

Amazing that that someone actually lived this life. This book revolves around “The Wolf” (Jordan Belfort): An ordinary guy turned manipulative millionaire stockbroker who can take tons upon tons of drugs, spend obscene amounts of money that enable him to do some of the most outrageous things, one of which was the sinking of his 170 foot yacht. He is at the top of his game, having the time of his life, but ultimately his life unravels and comes crashing down. One prevalent theme within this book is his drug abuse, however he uses this addiction and changes it for the better towards the end of the book. This book is very fascinating and makes you want to keep reading. Belfort is very descriptive in his work, but sometimes is a little too descriptive and it is very prolonging to the story. This book is not for every one and it is certainly not for someone who is prude and cant stand countless profanities and sexual content. This book is recommended for someone who is looking for a good read and wants to learn more about the man who succeeded to become “The Wolf of Wall Street” and managed to spend $700,000 on a hotel bill for a few nights. “The Wolf” now has me hooked, so I am going to pick up his sequel: “Catching The Wolf of Wall Street”.

Sooo good. Great book unlike anything I’ve ever read and its a great ending.

Great Book but don't watch the movie. Being more of a movie watcher than book reader I was excited to see the book play out on screen and boy was I disappointed... It was like I read and watched two different stories? None the less I'm rating the book and not the movie so with that in mind I have to give it 5 stars. It was hard for me to put it down! As an entrepreneur it's amazing to see american capitalism at its best and lowest forms. One minute you love and respect the guy and the next minute you completely despise him and everything he stands for. Sure must have been a roaring time...

Fast and fun ride. A very fast and fun read. It is a great look into a man that by all of American standards is successful ( rich, beautiful wife, etc..), but is as dysfunctional as any psych patient you might meet.

Great Read! Very exciting.. The movie was great but it does no justice to the book. I highly recommend it! You won't be able to put it down.

Terribly written!. Don't waste your time.

Jordan's Wolf of Wall Street. Jordan's candor is what made this book! From the very 1st chapter I was laughing while I would lie in bed and read each evening. It made my, being a current company owner, approach to my own business a bit lighter. My business partner and I have had some great times building our company, though not quite at the level of Mr. Belforte, this book brought me back to the earlier years of my late 90s and early 2000s. It was a fun read because I can appreciate all he went through. There are many politically correct men out there that wouldn't admit it but in secrecy I know that the vast majority do. Sincerely, Tim from Denver

Simply Incredible!!!. From beginning to end the story of The Wolf of Wall Street will keep you on the edge of your seat. From the inspiration you get from reading all of his success to the amazement and shock that he actually survived everything, you'll have a hard time putting this book down!!!

Wolf of Wall Street. Riveting tale of a brilliant man's demise as a result of in fathomable greed.

Great book!. A very interesting read! I feel like there is too many nicknames used, it was hard keeping up with who was being talked about. Other than that, this was a great book!

Must read. I really enjoy books, like TWOWS, that makes it utterly difficult to put down. Very entertaining. I loved it and I wish there could be a sequel howev I don't think Jordan could live through it!!

Interesting life. Good book. However I wanted to hear more about how he went from an innocent stock trader, to the person he became. It jumped way too quickly to his craziness.

Riveting. I couldn't put this book down (or couldn't close the app, I should say) beyond terrific. Couldn't get enough. Was sad at the end, simply because I wanted more.

Lucky to be alive. It was an eye opening experience to catch a glimpse of what it might have been like in Jordan's world. The total disregard for money and people were mind boggling and how could things be more decadent and depraved. How this guy managed to not kill himself or someone else is a miracle. I enjoyed this inside look at the depraved goings on in the trading business.

Wow. What a train wreck that was! You will want to read this story.

Amazing read. Just when you think these guys can get any more outrageous, they do! Cannot wait for the movie. If it's half as good as the book, it'll be spectacular.

Wow!!!. I can FINALLY go watch the movie. My expectations for the movie have been raised to the max by reading the book first. 4 words describe this book for me: I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I devoured it, page-by-page, chapter-by-chapter. I did not want it to end, yet I insisted on reading the book prior to watching the film. Jordan had me reading late into the night tucked into my bed with the covers over my head to keep the light from disturbing my sleeping wife. It's been a long time since a book has had me so all consumed. I'm leaving this review to go buy Jordan's other book straight away. Enjoy, Michael Hamburger

Wow!!! Exciting story, excellent storyteller. Loved this book! His (mis)adventures are incredible, and charming literary style are irresistible. Couldn't put it down...

The Wolf of Wall Street. I’ll admit to this: “The Wolf of Wall Street” was my in-the-library book as I sat on the thrown and, slowly but surely, became one of the finest reads of my life as I could not help but take it to bed with me. Filled beginning-to-end with depraved yet well meaning character descriptions and behaviors that entertain and educate, Jordan Belfort’s story is one for the ages. And this after having viewed the movie - the read tops it!

Wolf of Wall Street Review -- Kelvin's Review. I can't lie, I read the entire book only after seeing the movie. Quite frankly the film itself is beyond captivating. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are pure geniuses at how well they put the film together. I was instantly hooked. ( didn't want the movie to end). I can honestly say that I had the same exhilarating and mesmerizing feeling while reading the actual book. The book teaches multiple important lessons, it has a take away for absolutely anyone. My biggest take away from this book is: no matter how powerful or rich you may be, all good things eventually come to an end. Thats just how life goes. It is important to be humble day in day out and never forget that with good wealth and fortune comes a great responsibility.

Great read. Different than the movie. Great story and fun to see life from the point of view of someone who is at the opposite end of the economical class spectrum

Great Book!!. This book is a roller coaster ride through the true most interesting man in the world. The amount of sex, drugs and action in the book is indescribable. Thank you Jordan Belfort for telling us your amazing life. Me. Belfort lived one of the wildest and greatest lives I history.

Well done. Loved every word as the book was well written and engaging. As a fellow degenerate, there were times I was sick to my stomach having felt what the writer was feeling. So good.

Great read. Very interesting book! Keeps you wanting to read more!

Great read. Couldn't put this down. Hope the movie is not as good as the book.

Wow. It is the best book that i have ever read.

Diary of a Rat!. Don't waste your money on this trash. Last page you find out he rats on his friends. Goof!

The Wolf of Wall Street. This autobiographical account by Jordan Belfort was one of the most amazing stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading. He concisely relates his rise and subsequent fall in such dramatic fashion that I really had a hard time putting this book down. I would recommend this book to anyone, and especially those smith an interest in the money markets and those who have made a meteoric rise to fame and fortune

Dear JeffB123. I haven't read the book yet, but if I find out that your review ruined the ending for me I will find you and I will paper cut your whole body.

Wolf Too Self Absorbed. Good book that could've been great. Too much time spent on silly things like dwarf throwing that is merely a distraction from the drug and life abuse. He try to sound cool, but it is just a distraction from the real story, which is how do people handle being on top of their field. Not enough true detail about Belfort. Who was he? what shaped him to being like he was? He wasn't super smart based on what was written, just lucky and drug dependent, if he was a genius, then I'd want to hear more. The drug induced irrationality gotta little boring. And,I'd like to know what he's doing now and if he still has money. And, like many people that make mistakes, why didnt he have a plan for when he became too addicted, or did he?Also, what has he substituted drugs for? Is he happy? Maybe the movie will tell me. Go Leo! It must've been good to be the king!

The wolf of Wall Street the Jordan belfort story. A great book, really I am amazed he is still living. He has inspired me to do more with my days and do it for the right reason. Can't want for the movie. A great read! Thanks Jordan
