A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The classic chronicle of a “terribly misguided and terribly funny” (The Washington Post) hike of the Appalachian Trail, from the author of A Short History of Nearly Everything and The Body

“The best way of escaping into nature.”—The New York Times

Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes—and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.

For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods is a modern classic of travel literature.

A Walk in the Woods. I enjoyed reading the book. It made me laugh and there was a lot of real life situations and truths that I enjoyed about the book. I also enjoyed seeing how this experience, had an effect and change on two persons lives. A couple things I was disappointed in were 1. The authors stereotyping certain classes of people, making the assumption by this that all people in that persuasion were alike. 2. Some or Much of his scientific information he brought out as fact, when it is actually theory. But I enjoyed reading the book.

This book is terrible.. I am ashamed I paid for this. What a waste of money.

Entertaining Read. I thoroughly enjoyed Bryson’s humor while chronicling his hike on the Appalachian trail. His descriptions and historical references make this book very interesting as well.

Dull. Started out ok but could not finish it when i realized neither would the author. Appropriate title - just a walk in the woods.

Just can’t go wrong. So, Bill Bryson writes books of his travels. His wonderful humorous sarcastic opinion all along the way. This was my first and I’ve read almost everything else he wrote. Step into the world as Bill sees it. You won’t regret the step.

Absolute classic! Hilarious!. This book was brought to my attention about 5 years ago from my mom, I gotta tell u I was skeptical, but wow!!! Lol this book is hilarious! It is by far my favorite book of all time, I have NEVER read anything remotely close to as funny as this book... Well done, absolutely brilliant!

Very entertaining. Not only was this book entertaining, it is also very informative. Having lived in sev of the areas in which he speaks about, I found it all to be an honest depiction of the areas.

Awesome, awesome, awesome read!. The journey is one of the best I have read in a long time. So enjoyable and uplifting not to spoil it for anyone but the adventures and the various things he has seen is amazing!

I enjoyed it.. Mostly. With some laugh-out-loud moments and interesting people, there is plenty to make this a book worth reading. Some historical information seemed to drag on for me and "Katz" throwing gear and garbage on the trail made me truly mad, but the humor was a highlight and the information about our Park Services Department was eye opening. Unlike some trail stories this one does not make it seem like everyone you meet is a saint and truthfully some of the least friendly people introduced provide some of the most enjoyable parts to read. This is one book that clearly discusses the difficulties, the discomfort and the physical hardships of such an undertaking as hiking the AT. For that reason alone anyone planning on doing it should take time to read it.

What a walk!!. Having just driven a good many of the areas in this book on an eight-week vacation from Georgia up through Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and finally ending for the last week in Gatlinburg, we thoroughly enjoyed this book. Even though we weren't hiking, we recognized and appreciated the geography and cultures that the AT passes through. The humor embedded in the book led me to read parts aloud to my husband as we drove from Virginia to Tennessee. We laughed out loud at some of Katz's antics! First time I've read Bryson & thoroughly enjoyed his work!

Over-hyped. If it weren't for Katz, this book would be unreadable. I hope Bryson gave a lot of the proceeds from the book to him, because without Katz, this would be a long journalism piece with no emotion or story involved. If you want a good account of a hiker's journey on a long trail, seek out Backpacker Magazine's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Scott Williamson. Bryson is quite contradictory in his writing, which was very frustrating. In one chapter alone, he derides hikers with technology (GPS devices, cell phones, laptops) but later extols the virtue of Burger King's air conditioning while slurping a "bucket-sized" Coke! For all his complaining about trails, the National Park Service, and lack of conservationism, Bryson doesn't offer any solutions. He didn't volunteer to update Pennsylvania's maps, and didn't join a conservation group, or even go outside and plant a tree. It seemed like Bryson didn't have enough of a "book" based on just his AT hiking experience and padded it with a ton of filler. He devotes half-chapters to the 250 million year old geological history of the Appalachians, Civil War history, why the American Chestnut isn't around, why there aren't any songbirds on the AT, and etc. He also comes across very misogynistic, with very few sympathetic/intelligent/important female characters. If you've ever thought about hiking the AT, don't read this book, since through all his complaining you may be discouraged.

A Walk In The Woods. Laugh out loud funny...fav book of all time!

Waste of time. You wouldn't let a stranger speak to you for an hour about his weak attempt to hike the trail. Don't waste time with this essay.

Tedious. Rather boring and uninspiring. I kept waiting for the exciting part to take place, but it never transpired.

Highly recommended. Can’t stop till the end, and start to do it again.

Laugh out loud reading. The only other author who I have read who makes me laugh out loud is the late great political satirist Art Buchwald. Bill Bryson is a great storyteller. His interweaving of fact fantasy and fiction makes for truly enjoyable times. I find his and Katzs' quips to repeatedly cause bouts of gut busting laughter. Read this book near people who need cheering up. Do not read this book while drinking beverages unless you want to spray a mouthful or worse a nose full at your nearby surroundings.

Decent and interesting. First half was really interesting with some very funny parts. But the back half dragged on with a lot of facts about the AT, nature, what man has done to harm it, etc. I ended up skimming a lot of the second half.

Enjoyable and funny. My favorite book of all time. I could read it again and again. After reading, I made a trip to the AT from Florida and walked a small portion in NC.

A Great Read. This book was wonderfully written. Bill Bryson takes you on a journey with him along the App. Trail. Very humorous and detailed writing style. I read some time ago the rights to this book were purchased by Paul Newman to adapt it into a movie. I would be interested in seeing that happen. Enjoy the book!

A Walk in the Woods. A great mix of humor and history.

Disappointed. Very disappointed. I agree with another reviewer in saying that it was difficult to finish after you realize he gave up. Not worth my money.

Nature Is Great But This Book Reeks Of Arrogance. There are redeeming qualities of this book. Anyone can enjoy reading and learning about nature. What bothered me most about this book is the arrogance and hypocrisy of the writer. Him and his partner actively do things that are harmful to their environment but then he tries to call out others for it? Additionally, there are a few stories he talks about that didn’t seem legit and once fact checked I learned they were not. I know he is trying to come off as funny but the way him and his buddy treat the trail and people they meet along is just obnoxious.

I think I may take a walk in the woods. Ever since I picked up this book, I've been thinking about taking a hike on the Appalachian Trail. This book is filled with great stories, comedy, adventure and is an over all fun read. The author doesn't hold back, he tells of the good and the bad, the hardships and the glory. Definite recommendation for anyone who likes reading about travel or is thinking about

Walk in the Woods. Humorous, thought provoking, and delightfully descriptive. I could almost feel blisters popping up on my feet, or the strain of a heavy pack. The crisp clean smell of forests and wooded streams and facts were blended into am armchair adventure for all ages.

A very enjoyable read. I really enjoyed this, very humorous!

Hilarious!!. I loved it!! I felt like I was on the journey with him and couldn't put the book down. At times I laughed out loud... I might just read it again!

If you have ever hiked.... Anybody who has ever hiked will love this book. Laugh out loud funny stuff. Great read.

Hilarious. I've read this book three times now, I still laugh until I cry. Not just funny, it's fairly informative as well. Highly recommend.

Great read!. I enjoyed this book a lot and enjoy Bryson's writing style.

Enjoyable. If you are looking for some light reading, humor, and something that holds your attention this book is for you. Some scenes had me in tears I laughed so hard. I'm looking forward to more of Bryson's writing any day.

Absolutely Loved It. How Bill Bryson wrote an entire book about hiking that is at times fascinating, funny, insightful, and engaging is a mystery, but he did, and I highly recommend this to anyone. It was a truly delightful read.

Bill Bryson keeps it real…. For the Everyman who thinks or dreams about doing something completely out of the ordinary, A Walk in Woods does just that. The stories are funny and genuine, his research is meticulous and interesting. And what happens to him versus what he wanted to have happen is what would happen to most of us. Great read.

The Best Book You Will Ever Read. I am still laughing at Bryson's witty, hilarious description of moose!!!! Best book ever. Period. As always, Bryson always writes the most informative, fact filled, entertaining book on the market.

Walk in The Woods. Great book. If u need to laugh slot and just relax and enjoy, u will love this book. Everyone who has read it, loves it! Will be a favorite.

Great reading. I am drawn to the Appalachian Trail myself, and this book was great. It doesn't tell you how to hike it. It's just a story of the adventure of two friends that set out to have a great adventure.
