In a Balkan country mending from war, Natalia, a young doctor, is compelled to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding her beloved grandfather’s recent death. Searching for clues, she turns to his worn copy of The Jungle Book and the stories he told her of his encounters over the years with “the deathless man.” But most extraordinary of all is the story her grandfather never told her—the legend of the tiger’s wife.

Depressing. Sorry. Do not get the attraction for this book. Jumps around and totally strange-- plus not fun for an animal lover.

Bored. After 8 chapters I couldn't read any more.

An engaging tale. This novel is an engaging tales that touches on so many elements of humanity: war, friendship, love, domestic violence, homo sexuality, wild animals in zoos, poverty...it goes on. The start is slow and you have not idea where it is going, but as the stories unfold, you find yourself deeply involved and waiting to find out what happens next and how it is all connected. The write has a tendency to be overly descriptive, but it's a well written tale overall.

Huh???. I just don't get it. I kept waiting for it to get good, or even make any sense. It never did. What a waste of $$$ and time. One of the worst books ever.

Over rated. I don't see what all the hype is about. A strange and boring book with no point.

A subtle, compelling story. Moving, and somewhat haunting. The way the characters' lives connect and diverge over and over gives one that bittersweet sense that one gets at times of how far apart and yet how connected we all are, and how two people can see the same thing so differently. Leaves one "running to the store" to see what else the author has on offer.

TigersWife. Very hard to grasp. Too many untied strings for me. I was compelled to finish it.

Overrated is an understatement.. I should have known better. I tend not to like Oscar winners and therefore was suspicious of a National Book Award winner. I am not afraid of a meaty, dark book. I loved "Unbroken", "Night Circus", "Double Bind" and "Blindness". I have stuck with books to the end that I was not enjoying. Sometimes happy that I finished it sometimes not. However, with only 40 pages left to go, I actually decided it was not worth finishing. There were so many stories running that clearly there was no way for the author to wrap them up into anything I cared about. It was then that I went to read the reviews and discovered I had made the right decision. Wish I had read the reviews first. I actually put this suggestion in the queue for my book group based on verbal recommendations of 2 people and the book description on the library site. I do regret that I did not read reviews first. Generally I don't like to be swayed and prefer to make a choice based on friend recommendations and an attraction to the book jacket description. It has taken me 4 weeks to get to this point, which is not typical for me. So disapppointed.

Interesting. The books has beautiful folk stories but lacks a central grasping piece or character to pull it altogether. It felt unfinished to me but still was a very pleasant read.

Sorry. While I applaud the efforts and time taken to prepare a manuscript and get it published, I cannot recommend this book except as punishment. Not one of my book club, which includes a wide range of ages, liked this book. The person who suggested it apologized to the rest of us.

Incredible Novel, Surprisingly Easy Read. The hype surrounding this book is so overwhelming I admit I was skeptical anything could live up to such fervor: it lived up to every last accolade and more. What is most surprising and delightful is how easy of a read it actually is, and not because it's at all simple but because Obreht is such a masterful writer; the only disappointment is turning the final page and realizing it's over. Fabulous characters, moving fiction... a truly remarkable novel.

The tigers wife. Way way too detailed and rambling... Tedious descriptions of minor characters and events. If this is the best novel of the year, we are sunk. I only endured it to see if it finally made any sense.....waste of time...

Not my Cup of Coffee!. This was a tough read. Bits of this novel were so promising at first and I was hoping for a resolution that tied all of the unlinked elements together. It never came. This book at times felt like genius in the layering of superstitions, fables, and the interweaving of dark story lines but just as it became riveting, the author would suddenly take a right turn and embellish in GREAT DETAIL a character who had little to do with the plot and expound for pages on end. (Why do I hear the line from Amadeus: “Too many notes?”) Tea’s paragraphs were long, extremely chewy, and hard to get through. I wish I could say I found this story enlightening and encouraging but it was more confounding than anything. I know I scratched my head at the conclusion and thought, “Well, there are three days of reading I’ll never get back.” Apparently, I don’t appreciate the concepts or implied analogies but least I finished it. This was my least favorite book of the summer and I’ve read a dozen since June. ⭐️⭐️

The Tiger's Wife. I love this book. It was complex, well written and entertaining.

I'm bored. This book is too heady for me. It will probably end up in an english lit class.

The Tiger's Wife. Why do I feel like I've missed something great? I had to plow through the book to finish it. That wasn't so easy to do.

Poor writing, weak story. This reads like a first novel from a below average writer. The writing constantly repeats itself and is full of descriptions that don't add to the story at all. Very poor storytelling.

Very good. This was more of a page-turner than I expected. There was the occasional odd word choice, and the variable omniscience of the narrator was sometimes unsettling, but one the whole, this is quite an accomplishment--carefully plotted and expertly drawn.

The tigers wife. A great read that reminded me of everything is illuminated and the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay.

Couldn’t get into it. I just couldn’t get into the story. It was odd and it was slow and it never really got to a point where it ramped up and made sense to some extent. May be me and my tastes but I didn’t care for it and stopped reading about 40% of the way through.

amazing. This book everyone must read it is amazing! :)
