World War Z by Max Brooks Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Prepare to be entranced by this addictively readable oral history of the great war between humans and zombies.”—Entertainment Weekly

We survived the zombie apocalypse, but how many of us are still haunted by that terrible time? We have (temporarily?) defeated the living dead, but at what cost? Told in the haunting and riveting voices of the men and women who witnessed the horror firsthand, World War Z is the only record of the pandemic.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

“Will spook you for real.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Possesses more creativity and zip than entire crates of other new fiction titles. Think Mad Max meets The Hot Zone. . . . It’s Apocalypse Now, pandemic-style. Creepy but fascinating.”—USA Today

“Will grab you as tightly as a dead man’s fist. A.”—Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick

“Probably the most topical and literate scare since Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds radio broadcast . . . This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view.”—Dallas Morning News

Blah. I read...A LOT. This may be the most boring book I've come across in many, many months. The genre excitement was lost in the interview format.

Unlike Anything I've Read Before. World War Z is a phenomenal science fiction novel that brings a zombie apocalypse to life through journalistic story telling and historical lessons as if it has happened. The reader is brought through the assumed start and final days and current situation. The story takes the reader all over the world as if they are trying to solve the mystery and cure with those in "history." The imagination out into the zombie figures was outstanding and logically real. This book is a great fictional read. 1,000 times better than the movie. Highly recommended...

Great book. Love the way the book portrayed different countries during the zombie war. Awesome book.

First Time I Liked The Movie More. I started reading this book before the movie because the book's always better, right? Not in the case. I forced myself halfway through this set of stories told in the past-tense by half-drawn characters and couldn't go on. There's no immediacy, no characters that are fleshed out enough to make me care. It's a great story idea, but the execution leaves it just that; a story, not an experience.

Not for me. Reading this felt like a chore. As soon as I was semi invested in a story it was over, and I was thrown into a different scenario. Felt confusing, tried finishing the book several times but after reading 3/4 I was just bored and gave up. Waste of money....just wasn’t my cup of tea.

A let down. Perhaps I was expecting the excitement of the movie previews. This is entirely different. In concept, it was kinda going somewhere, but I'm sorry to say the book was really disconnected from the reader. It highlighted some interesting premise for the situation/genre, but failed to keep my interest, to build my sympathy for a character, to establish continuity - basically all of the things I look for. The screen play must have really rocked to get such an expensive budget- so I'm looking forward to that hoping it is nothing like the book at all.

Finished it in 3 days. Fast paced great reading. You will surprised how you can't put it down!

Great Book. This was an amazing book! Great writing and extremely realistic, I felt like I was there inside World War Z! The book is nothing like the movie and so much better too. I would recommend everyone to read this book it is very good.

One of my favorite historical novels. Written like a historical review of past events, cataloged by interviews, this book’s storytelling and format is one of the most interesting and engaging I’ve ever read. Re-readable and exciting!

Best book ever. It felt as if this really happened Like the people where actually talking to me

WWZ. Best zombie apocalypse book ever written.

Very entertaining!. It’s an entertaining take on the zombie apocalypse. I recommend it.

World War Z. I liked the movie, then I read the book. The book was even better. The stories were all good and the format made it all seem fluid and fast paced.

Great book. Though very different from the motion film, the book is great in its own terms.

World War Z. By far the best book I have ever read in my life.

This book would have been better if it was non-fiction. At times, this book seemed long with very descriptive detail. The the amount of imagination kept me interested, but at time bored with to much technical talk. This book really did take you into a zombie apocolapse, with the use of parallels that can mirror social maladies.

The Movie was better. I thought the movie was better than the book which is not usually the case.

World War Z. A story told as a collection of narratives from individuals all around the world and their experiences dealing with Zack (the living dead). I really enjoyed the portrayals of human nature - both the good and the bad. A solid read.

World War Z. Whew! Bizarre but a great writer!

Boring. We’ll written book but no protagonist or antagonist just bouncing around everywhere

Decent.. For the most part this kept me entertained, it even had me on edge at times. Although, I found myself wandering into random thought while reading certain dry parts. I didn't care enough to re-read most of those parts. Possibly a factor of my own laziness, but I usually don't find myself doing this. Intriguing idea for a novel that could have been better laid out better at parts.

Loved it. If you like good science fiction, you'll love this book.

Amazing. Must read for folks interested in this genre. Great novel through and through. The accounts and descriptions are vivid and captivating

Fascinating. I wish my American History textbook was written this compellingly. It might have changed my entire career path!

World War Z. Good read, despite zombies

The worst. I love books about zombies. I love books in general. I hated this book because it was written in short interviews, not as a continuous story. I am happy to see that some people appreciate it, because it did absolutely nothing for me. I dreadful task to read.

I got hooked!!!. Normally not my type of book, but this one really glued me to the iPad. Much much better than the movie!!!

Awesome. This is such a good book. Anyone who likes this book, I encourage them to see the movie. It's a scary and awesome movie!

Different. A lot of places and people to keep up with. I could barely remember anyone. Otherwise, good read

Great Story!. Creepy, but REAL!!!!!!! Excellent Fiction! In my mind it felt like the story was really happening!!!

Worth reading but concept is hard to execute. I loved the concept (write the book as a historic report based on numerous eye witness interviews), but it makes for a very confused book that lacks a continuous thread. I still recommend reading it, but every few pages a new person is introduced with a different story, rarely ever to be mentioned again. As a result there is no narrative that "pulls you into the story". That being said, most of the individual stories are real page turners.

Literary technique grows tiresome and leaves narrative flat.. While I can appreciate the interesting take on this tale through the viewpoint of the survivor interviews, I am ultimately left uninvested in the characters or the greater story arc due to the disjointed and abbreviated nature of the testimonies. There are some really interesting perspectives on the events of World War Z seen through the lens of a cultural and geo-political framework, however they are captured in such a fragmented way that the reader is never able to emotionally buy into the struggle in a meaningful way.

Absolutely phenomenal.. I couldn’t stop reading, every “interview” was so interesting and engaging in their own ways. I 100% recommend this book for people who like horror, humor, and zombies.

Great!. A good zombie read while making it very realistic.

World war Z. This book was amazing. I picked it up after I saw world war z and I have to say. The book is better than the movie. Read it, it's great.

Help. I bought this book and it’s not downloading. Why is that?

Very Superficial. It's never difficult to spot an author whose overseas working experience hasn't involved so much as putting their pants on 10 mornings in a foreign city much less grocery shopping. I suppose it might have been the author's intent to portray world society as a mix of Hollywood cartoonish and cable network news, nothing that would challenge readers' preconceived opinions of life outside the USA. In addition, when the author calls upon historical record it suggests an impoverished education. Churchill lost to Attlee because he never won an prewar election and his war cabinet was a coalition government--and had to be.

Best Zombie Book Ever. I’ve read World War Z multiple times now. It’s hands down the best zombie book in my opinion. There’s plenty of amazing short stories in the book that you’ll remember and want to come back later to reread. I recommend every zombie fan to read this at some point.

Amazing book!. Great book to read in digital copy. The night/black page/white type does not recognize chapter glyphs unfortunately.

It got old.. After half the book, I just couldn't take the short story format anymore. I felt like I kept reading an introduction to a story that never began, just another intro, than another, and another...

World War Z. Difficult to read, very disjointed, extreme violence, and other world. Not a world I want to visit.

Eye opening!. This book is not a book, it is art, it is experiences, it's everything, which most zombie books lack. This art shows you so many different perspectives of life, suffering, human sufficiency and tenacity for life, it opens your eyes of the various cultures around the world, and our differences that aren't so different if you look at it as the big picture. It continues to show the secrecy and cynicism of the world and most governmental powers. And so much more. Highly recommended! The movie does not do the book justice, not because it's bad but because it's just not the same feel. And it kinda goes against the book as to show human kind as one unit and twists it to show you all the social standards, beliefs and concepts of today's society.

Book world war z. It is a vary good book I like how you don't know what is going to happen next vary well at trying what might happen next.

Didn't like it. It seemed to me it was a series of short stories. None of which held my interest. No main character, no build up, no climax. I felt like the reading dead trying to plod my way through it.

Only one word can describe this book - amazing!. First off, this book is a perfect read for those who commute via train or bus. The book is written as a collection of short stories (actually notes) of the fictional zombie apocalypse - which, in my opinion, made it better as they are all in the first person or told as interviews. This is one of the most memorable books I've read. What amazes me most is how the author provided so much detail, and considered how such an event would impact so many groups around the world differently. I mean, even dogs would be different! Truly a remarkable book

Couldn't finish it. I can't remember the last time I didn't finish a book. 20 years ago? Even if a book is underwhelming, I finish it. And I love apocalypse stories. But this book was a chore to read from page 1 through where I gave up around page 200. With no main characters and no real plot, this book was plodding and surprisingly uninteresting for a topic as interesting as a zombie war. It was too detailed where it didn't need to be (I don't care about the specifics of all the different weapons that didn't work) and not detailed enough where it should have been (where was the fear? the panic? the anxiety?) The characters interviewed were so matter-of-fact about what happened they could have been zombies themselves. The only thing that really interests me about this book is why so many others liked it.

Sexy. Sexy

Seen the movie... Read the book 1st. I've seen the movie in theaters and I loved it. I've also read this. Really amazing!!!

I don't know yet. I don't have money to buy book :((:(:(:(:(

Liked it, didn’t love it. Felt kind on lost with the way the “interviews” jumped around, not a good flow to the story. But I did like it.

Excellent read. Great collection of short stories and enjoyed that while they were their own, they all not only told their own story but also contributed to the overall story.

Amazing. This is without question my favourite post-apocalyptic story.

Most unique read. WWZ is easily the most unique zombie novel I have ever read. There are moments where I stop and marvel and the book and think how great of a read it is. If only the movie could have followed the style a bit more than it did

Page turner. I was glued to this one from start to finish. There are so many stories that will leave you wanting more.

Amazing. Clearly he interviewed veterans and survivors of war. Very detailed, disturbing, hopeful, and sad. It was a great read and I definitely recommend it.

Alicia. I hate zombies. I think the whole concept is ridiculous. I only read this book because the rating were great (how I pick all the books I read) and I was up for something new. BEST BOOK EVER! I couldn't put it down, I was forcing my boyfriend to listen to me read excerpts from the book, and now he's reading it. Soooo good! Worth every penny! You have to buy this book.

One of the best I've ever read. From its unique writing style to its analysis of almost every major political conflict in the 20th century, brooks binds together a multitude of themes, voices, histories, and philosophy's orchestrating it by wielding a popular geeky genre that feels as if its reborn. Don't hesitate on buying this one, even of you're not zombie crazy, won't regret you did.

You thought you were prepared for a zombie apocalypse….. Max Brooks take the zombie apocalypse to a whole different level with this book. He examines what would happen to us if the apocalypse actually occurred and how it would spread globally from a political, economic, social and cultural perspective. He uses an unnamed figure to Interview and record first person accounts of what happened to them from the start of outbreaks to create new government and attempting rebuilding society and methodically kill the zombies across their territory. It’s so captivating because it makes the scenarios that much more realistic. You only briefly get to know the characters and never know what happens to them, and it gives us the ability to see how globalization and capitalism play major roles in the spread of the virus. It’s so well written.

Unique and compelling. The way this was written was very unique. A post-war play by play, done interview style, with almost 50 different characters providing perspectives in a five -ten page snapshot. No central character to root for, or one individual to follow a developmental arc, yet somehow the narrative woven by all these different chronological perspectives around the world was utterly compelling. Made "humanity" seem like the character, you were engrossed in how mankind could actually survive. Really good.
