Maine Book Reviews
Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan Book Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The celebrated author of Commencement and The Engagements introduces four unforgettable women and the abiding, often irrational love that keeps them coming back, every summer, to Maine and to each other.
"Rich and exhilarating ... You don't want the novel to end."—The New York Times Book Review
For the Kellehers, Maine is a place where children run in packs, showers are taken outdoors, and old Irish songs are sung around a piano. As three generations of Kelleher women arrive at the family's beach house, each brings her own hopes and fears. Maggie is thirty-two and pregnant, waiting for the perfect moment to tell her imperfect boyfriend the news; Ann Marie, a Kelleher by marriage, is channeling her domestic frustration into a dollhouse obsession and an ill-advised crush; Kathleen, the black sheep, never wanted to set foot in the cottage again; and Alice, the matriarch at the center of it all, would trade every floorboard for a chance to undo the events of one night, long ago.

awesome read. This story was so well written. No fantasies- just real life. It made me think about my own family and how short life really is. Congrats on such a lovely story. Can't wait to read more of your books!
Good book... Weird ending. I really enjoyed this book, but the ending was weird and rather abrupt.
Maine. I felt like the back story for each women went on a little too long in the beginning of the book. It took a long time for the plot to unfold. When the family finally all arrived at Maine, the story became intriguing, but before that I felt as if I was stuck in the setting of the story. I am not quite sure I understand the ending of the story. I am assuming Alice died, but I really don’t know and that is a bit unsatisfying.
Maine. I did not care for this book. A bit boring, the story line started no where, went no where and ended no where. Not worth the read.
MAINE. Very good writer, not my religious beliefs, but did learn so many things about the Catholic Church that I thought possibly had faded from the old traditional ways. These generations of family showed me I had much to learn about this Faith. A family story that keeps the reader sticking to what is going to happen next. Do recommend for an entertaining read.
Disappointing, A just ok book. Author spent too much time having characters retell versions of the same story (through different pov, but still) and was tedious in that regard. Characters were interesting and I liked that I saw a bit of myself in each. I'm sure others would, too. Ending was disappointing.
Maine. I must strongly disagree with the reviewers who did not like the book. There is not a lot of plot or fast action, but there doesn't need to be. This is a story of family, about people and personalities and life and misunderstandings. It is sometimes funny, picturesque and sad. Number 14 said it just right. I loved this book!
I blame myself. I should have stopped after the first 50 pages. I blame myself for this because I have been sucked into other "this is going nowhere" books many times before. The characters have nothing exciting going on in their lives. Even MY life is more exciting than this. Don't waste your money.
Depressing. Just a sad, painful book
Maine. Not my cup of tea! I thought it could have been cut in half...and it would have become a lot more powerful. It is filled with uninteresting details...rambling,if you will. The only reason I finished it is because I couldn't believe it wouldn't get a lot better! I would not recommend it to any one I know. It's a book about the seamy side of "family" full of boring characters.
Maine. This is might be a great book but i dont know because i have an i pod touch( the newest version) and i got hte i books app but its saying i must have a conpatible i pod, which i do and it says i cannot download it so i reccomend this app IF YOU CAN GET IT TO WORK!!!
A good read, but.... ...this book reminded me an awful lot of "Colony," by Anne Rivers Siddons. Generations of women, coming year after year to the same place. I couldn't get past thinking I'd read this book before.
Couldn't decide. Like all one-character-at-a-time perspective chapter books, I hated each character as the others told about them, then came to understand if not empathize with them in their own. The only real difference here is how despicable some of them are, but hearing from their own point of view, I almost forgot to hate them.
Maine. Don't waste your money!
Maine. Well writing book about real life issues.
More depressing than funny. These people are nothing but mean to each other. And the ending makes it worse.
A little dry. The story is relatable, everyone has some crazy in the family. But the only reason I stuck with it was because I paid for it. It left me feeling bored and Incomplete.
Maine. I am always disappointed to get to the end of a great book and I a sadly disappointed today. This book is a great read. Just buy it and enjoy it. You wil be sad to see that last page. Hope to see this author again.
Loved it!. The characters in this book feel like real people...imperfect,but still lovable. I enjoyed getting to know each woman in this complicated family. They could be truly exasperating, yet each had redeeming qualities. I definitely recommend this book, especially if you enjoy family dynamics.
