The Eighty-Dollar Champion by Elizabeth Letts Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The dramatic and inspiring story of a man and his horse, an unlikely duo whose rise to stardom in the sport of show jumping captivated the nation

Harry de Leyer first saw the horse he would name Snowman on a truck bound for the slaughterhouse. The recent Dutch immigrant recognized the spark in the eye of the beaten-up nag and bought him for eighty dollars. On Harry’s modest farm on Long Island, he ultimately taught Snowman how to fly. Here is the dramatic and inspiring rise to stardom of an unlikely duo. One show at a time, against extraordinary odds and some of the most expensive thoroughbreds alive, the pair climbed to the very top of the sport of show jumping. Their story captured the heart of Cold War–era America—a story of unstoppable hope, inconceivable dreams, and the chance to have it all. They were the longest of all longshots—and their win was the stuff of legend.

Love this book!. Great read for the young and the old. Incredibly inspiring story.

The eighty-dollar champion. Even if you are not a horse person you will love this book. If you are a horse person it will mean even more. The writing could of added more drama at the horse shows. But overall a fantastic story, even more fantastic is that it is true. Hopefully this will create a desire for everyone to stand with your horse to the end.

Horse crazy. If you love horses or know someone who does, this book is wonderful! I loved the history but it wasn't a turn-off to a good read. I bought two of these books. Both as gifts for horse lovers in my life.

THE BEST. This book is definitely a personal best. I just finished the book and watched the movie "Harry and Snowman" a few hours ago. I'm a lover of books about horses and gave 9 myself. I love how the book shows Harry and Snowmans relationship like how you can show it IRL (in real life). I've read SO MANY horse books but this is a favorite. You MUST read this book!

The eighty dollar champion. Great book, its hard to believe it's true because the story is so fantastic. I loved it!!

Snowman. A great story boringly told. Way too verbose.

Lovely, Encouraging, Am Awesome Read. With my daughter just weeks away from a Youth National Championship, the book was highlighted on so many pages because I want her to read that Harry felt about his horse as she does. Read it in a day. Could not put it down.

Great Read. This book is an amazing story about the value of seeing potential in people and animals. Through hard work, patience, and love we can truly come to understand the spirit of the horse.

Well written -- a wonderful story. A really well told and heartwarming story. I was sorry to reach the last page. A horse who jumps for the love of it? Wow!

Great underdog story.. Both man & horse had a similar character & heart. They may have had great obstacles to overcome, but together they soared and won the prize. Others might have written them off, but their inner fire and determination caused them to beat the odds that were stacked against them. It's a story of hope, encouraging anyone who might be struggling to meet their goals or achieve their dreams.

The Eighty-dollar champion. This was an excellent read, with lots of historical information along with an amazing true story of a human horse relationship. All champions are not for sale, wonderfully written.

Fantastic. This was a fantastic true story. The pictures were wonderful. You have to admire anyone who puts their animal's well being before profit. God bless them both.

Eighty-dollar champion. it would be a great book for a beginner rider like myself it was very interesting because it tells about a lot of stuff horse riders need to know

The Eighty-Dollar Champion. This was a wonderful, can't put it down book. I loved every page of it! I couldn't wait to finish it, yet never wanted it to end.

The Eighty Dollar Champion. I remember this horse when I was 10 years old . What a story . Never understood horses being killed for people to eat. They helped build our country . They brought people from the East Coast to the West Coast . The story of Snowman and his owner was so wonderful. And the best part , of which people now a days need to understand , he kept him til he died . He could have sold him for a lot of money , but he did not . Not everything should have a price tag on it . Horses are bought and sold every day , all in the name of the all mighty dollar. Harry was one in a million , and so was his buddy , Snowman . What a great man , and a well done story . Still wish a movie could be done , with the proceeds going to stop the opening of slaughter houses and stop sending our horses to Canada or Mexico to be killed .

Just a wonderful positive powerful story!!. I just loved this story. I read an article in USA Today about the book and loved the article. The book was entertaining and filled with knowledge about that period in time when things were simple and pure. I loved the detail of the horse lifestyle and the love of Harry for these beautiful and intelligent animals. I fell in love with Snowman and the love Harry and his family had for the horse. A very good book!!

Inspirational. I am a horse lover & owner of a horse. My horse is 70% pet & 30% show horse, although we show and win a lot. We have an amazing chemistry, but none to Snowman & Henry. This is a wonderful book that I could not put down & just bought for my young friend in the barn. If you love a great story, one that is true, & one with horses you cannot go wrong with this book!

The Eighty Dollar Champion. Loved this true story! Anyone who loves horses, sporting or otherwise, will be moved by this book. The communication between Harry and Snowman is what any true lover of the horse wants for their selves. Snowman was an amazing horse rescued from death by a man who intuitively knew, by looking at him, there was much more to him then met his eye. Man was he right! Well worth reading, tears, laughs and all.

Interesting story. Interesting story, but unfortunate very repetitive written. Historically false, like "Deutscland ueber alles" is not the title of the German hymned and this stance is never been sung. A lot of hatred towards the Germans, which Elizabeth Letts puts constantly in the same pot as the Nazis. Very Unreflected and it makes me ask what else is wrong.

Amazing!. The book was so touching and made you want to cheer Snowman on! I recommend it for horse lovers and people who just want a good book, I do have to say though that it's not for people who like constant action like myself. I found myself almost getting bored but other than that it is so good!

Remarkable Story. At a time when most current literature is spawned from corporate greed, public corruption or common vice, this true story is a remarkable ray of sunshine. Anyone who has ever sensed an intuitive bond with a member of the animal kingdom will relate to the magical heart of this story. The author is to be congratulated for her commitment to this project, which is clearly a labor of love.

The best book. This is the best book I have ever read I would recommend this to any one that loves horses and horse shows

It's ok. A bit sentimental; a bit heavy-handed. But a lovely story, and worth the read.

Survivors. This is the story of a courageous horseman, Harry de Leyer and his beloved horse, Snowman. It gives an excellent look at the hard work and risks of show jumping.

The $80 Horse. This is a MUST READ book if you love horses or true stories or true horse stories. And do read the notes at the end, especially the interview with Mr deLeyer....very interesting. Great Book!!

Magic!. The strength of faith, character & trust in the bond of horse and owner comes shining through in this well-told tale. A thoroughly enjoyable read both for historical content & inspiration!

Occupy... the 1950's horse world?. I really wanted to like this book. What's not to like about a great horseman who through hard work, skill, and knowledge made it to the top? But sadly, the author of this book frequently attributes his success to mere "luck", and filters every character motive inappropriately through a 21st century lense. The author seems as though she would be happier joining the Occupy movement than writing about a great horseman. If the number of times the author whined about the rich/ elite/ etc were turned into a drinking game, even a Wisconsinite would be smashed before a chapter was finished. I can only hope that this book doesn't turn the author into one of the 1%'ers she so clearly enviously despises. If you want an accurate representation of the times and characters, I recommend that you keep searching.

Great experience. This is one of the most uplifting and moving stories that I have experienced. It is written superbly and I could not pull myself away from the reading it.I looked forward to picking it up every day.I was disappointed when I finally finished.

Amazing story. I so enjoyed every page! Such a beautiful horse and a beautiful story! As a horse lover & owner, I appreciated the way the author told this lovely story.

$80.00champion. I didn't expect this story to be so good. Not just for horse lovers.

amazing!. this is by far the best book i have ever read, it is truly a touching story. i would recommend this book to all horse lovers

Eighty Dollar Champion. What a wonderful and inspiring (true) story. While it all occurred before I was born, I can't believe I never heard of Snowman. The author did a great job of painting a picture of the social landscape of the horse world 50 years ago as well as explaining the roots of some of the baffling horse show rules that are still in effect today. An absolute joy to read! Susan, Baltimore, MD
