To rubydodd. @rubydodd that's an incredibly unfair comment. She is brave to face the hard truths of her life and create something beautiful out of it. Rather than repeating cycles of dysfunction she's using everything she has been given, including fame, to help others! What are you doing?

Amazing story you're sure to love..... Like some of the others that have reviewed this book, I have had a hard time putting it down. Ashley has a way of writing that is smooth and stylized. Her words paint picture in your mind that perhaps remind you of a troubling event in your childhood. I'm not yet finished with the book, but based on the half I've read so far today I doubt I will lower my five star rating. I downloaded the book based on her story in People this week which implies she is getting along with her family but there was an article this evening indicating Naomi and Wynonna are seething. I tend to trust the direct quotes from Ashley than a somewhat tabloid article. I was disappointed that Ashley declined a request to appear with her mother and sister from Oprah. It could have done some healing for many to hear her tell her story. Having read several celebrity tell-alls this year, including Meredith Baxter's Untied among others, this is surely the best.

Stupid Book. Another rich celebrity whining about her life. Get over it! Put on your big girl boots and deal!

Not what I expected.. I downloaded the sample when I was browsing and I must admit I Was looking for some celebrity gossip. Boy was I surprised to be I in tears just few pages into this wonderful book.What a story Miss Judd has to tell. Gut wrenching, powerful and profound. I would have never guessed....

Profound, wise, moving, intelligent work. This is not a "Hollywood memoir" but a portrait of an incredibly, brave, smart woman. The work that Ashley Judd does on behalf of women and children throughout the world is vital and important. I had no idea how extensive sex slavery is world-wide nor did I know how much Ms. Judd has done for those trapped in it. At times I became too emotional to finish a passage and set it aside, only to find myself eagerly highlighting and bookmarking hours later. This is also an inspirational book for anyone in recovery, and her tremendous honesty about her difficult childhood made her current work all that more real to me. I have been recommending this book to all my girl friends word of mouth, and I will continue to do so.

Stupid!. This book was a waste of hard earned money. What a whiner! I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it. I should have known it would just be another Hollywood weirdo trying to turn a buck. She needed to call her therapist because her cat ran away??? Seriously??? And I thought she was the normal one in that family! Wrong!! Save your money!

All That is Bitter and Sweet. Wow, Ashley Judd has written an amazing memoir that shows how deep and humanistic this beautiful Hollywood actress is. Her real beauty comes forth in her strength to combat her adversities And her love of social justice and to be the voice for the voiceless. The book was touching and mesmerizing and you really got to feel her humanness and her generosity.

A Must Read. @RubyDodd - you obviously didn't read the book or your review would not have shown your blatant ignorance. E-Books really should require reviewers to actually purchase a book before you are allowed to review it, just like the app store requires you to actually purchase an app before you can review it. I'll admit I haven't finished the book, but I certainly know more about it than RubyDodd. As Ashley said in her People magazine interview, "My story's a description, not an indictment." She isn't whining, she's telling it like it was from her perspective and she and her family had the guts to do something about it. She also says that her relationship with her family is now healthier than it has ever been. This book is about how her childhood shaped her into the compassionate woman she is today. How all of the pain and hurt she experienced growing up has allowed her to be sympathetic and empathetic toward others in this country and around the world who are hurting in unimaginable ways. She's actually doing something about the injustices in this world, (even when no one is watching her) where do you get "whining" from that, Ruby? As I said, I haven't finished the book as of yet, but it won't be long because I can't put it down. I had to force myself to stop reading long enough to write a review so that people looking to buy it would have more than a random, albeit ignorant, review from someone who didn't even read the book and has no clue about what they are talking about. When I finish, I'll change my review if my opinion changes - highly doubtful - but the part of the book I've read about so far has definitely deserved 5 stars.

All That Is Bitter and Sweet. Exquisite reading. A must read for every young girl, woman or man who has ever felt or been broken and who is willing or thankful for being restored by unending Grace. Beautifully written, wonderfully explored, and gratefully cherished. Thank you, Mrs. Judd, for sharing your story and those of the valuable women and children from around the world. May each of us who read this treasure do our part to continue in this most important work of helping each other in even just those seemingly small ways that can indeed change an entire world.

All that is bitter and sweet. Ashley Judd's book mirrors my own life as a child. Hearing things named is a huge relief to me. Also knowing that someone of her caliber is working and caring and loving relieves the wounds I feel as a woman and as a survivor. This book is extraordinary, captivating and almost impossible to put down. It will allow the reader to feel connected to people and their horrible circumstances around the world. And most importantly to see that help can be given in an educated way. Thanks Ashley from the bottom of my heart.

Inspiring to many generations to come (I hope). I first starting reading this book because I am a PROUD Kentucky teacher who wanted to read a good memoir (from a smart Kentucky woman) so I could use it as my reference when teaching about personal narratives. Never in a million years did I think it would take me on the personal journey it did. I laughed, did large amounts of crying and felt so proud of my mountain sister in her many accomplishments and hurdle jumping. Thank you sincerely for giving me the resources I need to focus a service project for my 4th graders to do something beyond bringing food in for local animal shelters. What a difference change can make! This boom gives you perspective on things from first-person experience which is amazing. Your friends, family, and community will be thankful if you let yourself read this wonderful book and take you on a spiritual journey. Happy page turning and may you be as inspired as I am!

Loved. This book changed my life. It validated things for me in my own struggles. Made me realize there is recovery for people dealing with depression and trauma. Ashley is an extraordinary woman with an incredible heart. Loved this book.
