The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life. And when she’s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

Praise for The Language of Flowers

"Instantly enchanting . . . [Diffenbaugh] is the best new writer of the year."—Elle

“I would like to hand Vanessa Diffenbaugh a bouquet of bouvardia (enthusiasm), gladiolus (you pierce my heart) and lisianthus (appreciation).  In this original and brilliant first novel, Diffenbaugh has united her fascination with the language of flowers—a long-forgotten and mysterious way of communication—with her firsthand knowledge of the travails of the foster-care system. . . . This novel is both enchanting and cruel, full of beauty and anger. Diffenbaugh is a talented writer and a mesmerizing storyteller.  She includes a flower dictionary in case we want to use the language ourselves.  And there is one more sprig I should add to her bouquet: a single pink carnation (I will never forget you).”—Washington Post

"A fascinating debut . . . Diffenbaugh clearly knows both the human heart and her plants, and she keeps us rooting for the damaged Victoria."—O Magazine

"Diffenbaugh effortlessly spins this enchanting tale, making even her prickly protagonist impossible not to love."—Entertainment Weekly

Loved it!. Such a great find! Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and really appreciated the unpredictability of the story...loved SF as the setting as well...

Bravo!. I am an avid gardner and learned the love of flowers from my mother. This book touched every corner of my heart. Beautifully written and when I finished I thought that this was the best use of my book money that I have spent in a long time. Gillian Flynn needs to take notes on how to write and weave a good story from start to finish. Vanessa you will be on my favorite author list from now on and I will recommend your book to everyone who asked me what I have read and loved!

Summer Read. This was a good book that served as a great summer read. It was a bit predictable but enjoyed the journey none the less. I enjoyed the secret language of the flowers intertwined throughout the book. You don't have to be a flower enthusiast to enjoy this book; more so, a believer that words aren't the only way to express yourself

The language of flowers. Beautiful, touching, exquisite! I can't wait to read the next novel by this exceptional author!

Pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this well written book that captured my interest and taught me another perspective. Highly recommend.

Unknown. I work in the children's unit of a state psychiatric center and have seen these children first hand. Attachment disorder in children leads to many psychiatric hospitalizations. I was glad to see that this book told what was going on in her mind and showed that these kids aren't just "bad seeds" they rationalize the bad things that they do. They have a reason to be mistrusting and with the right support they can learn to trust and learn that they are worthy of being loved and giving love in return. Thank you Vanessa for writing this. I'm recommending it to all of our social workers and psychologists throughout the state.

The Language of Flowers. Excellent writing with many underlying themes .

Wow!. A must read! Couldn't put it down!

Loved it and couldn't put it down. I've been an advocate for a foster child for 2 years. This helped me understand how a child who has been thru so much might see the world and how they build their own defense to protect themselves. It was very engaging and I read it every opportunity I had.

The Language of Flowers. In a word, brilliant! Loved this book!

Great read!. For a debut novel, the author had capture my interest and like a pull, roped me in to an incredible story of humility, forgiveness, and the secret love that binds lovers, family and friends. I also loved the incredible prestidigitation that Vanessa's story weaves components with flowers, their meaning and also the of Victoria 's passion for her flowers is awe inspiring. I am seeking areas in my life that carried the same tune of power that the protagonist had with her incredible love of flowers. Another great author to look for on the future. Great job ms. Diffenbaugh!

The Language of Flowers. I almost don't need to write a review, because if you have read this far you will most likely be influenced by all of the favorable comments. I have trouble agreeing with a lot of them. I didn't like this book nearly as much as most readers. It was an interesting approach to a story about a troubled young person. Something a little different. I found it very difficult to like the main character. Just as I was beginning to feel for her, she did something ridiculous. And it was a little hard to believe she could survive on her own in some of the conditions the author wanted us to believe. I'm not sorry I read the book, I just wish I liked it more.

Lovely and Romantic. A rough around the edges lead character in an odd allegorical world of flowers and plants. The young woman at the center is at once sad and hopeful. I found this to be a tad predictable but a lovely story well told.A good read.

The Language of Flowers. Eye opening.....emotional.....wonderful !

The Language of Flowers. I loved reading this book. It was beautifully written. You. Wanted to stop Victoria from doing things that were going to harm her, yet you understood why she had to do them. You could see and smell the flowers, and I love flowers.

Wow!. My heart broke and mended itself a thousand times! What an amazingly complex, thoughtful, and informative journey. If you love flowers or gardening you MUST read this book. If you love a good read, you MUST read this book! If you love thinking about life's complex meanings, you MUST read this book! To the author: Thank you for a great read, and opening my eyes to the greater meaning of flowers!

Great book!. This is the first book in a while that I have had trouble putting down. Great story, likable characters, and great writing.

the Language of Flowers. I just loved this book. I couldn't put it down it was that good. As a floral designer I new little or nothing about the meaning of flowers( except roses), now I refere to this book just see what someone might be saying. It's well worth the money.

Language of flowers. Excellent read right from beginning to end. I had never thought about what happens to foster kids when they age out. There needs to be more awareness and better programs to promote success in transition.

A wonderful story!. Couldn't put the book down.

Fantastic. A great book. Refreshing, real and engrossing.

Language of Flowers. Excellent book! I didn't want it to end.

Captivating. This book was surprisingly captivating! Loved it!!

The Language of Flowers. Loved the book.

Emotional Roller Coaster!. Read it in two days, as I found it difficult to put down! Very interesting premise. Learned a lot. Having said that, I would have liked a little more expansion on Victoria's life in the years between leaving Elizabeth and her 18th birthday. The 'mom' in mothers who read this will make them want to scream! A really fine read.

The language of flowers. A very enjoyable read!

The language Of Flowers. Beautifully written. I couldn't put it down. Don't miss out on this one!

Wow. Im not a reader, at all. My Neighbor recommended this book. Beautiful and touching! Such a fun read

Excellent!. My emotions ran the gamete with this story. Anger, sadness, love, you name it. Extremely well written. Even though I was angry with the back & forth I loved how the story came together. The character development was awesome. So real, so believable. I read each flower definition at the end.

The Language of Flowers. Loved this book!

Captivating. I loved this book. I read it at every spare moment I had! It's rare to read a book that is this hard to put down

It Broke My Heart. I received this book as an Advanced Reader's Edition before it was released. It's an first book from this author and I highly recommend it.

Not a riveting writing. Subject matter of book is good, but author is not able to deliver it with creative skill of writing. Without looking up in dictionary, you can not feel which flower represents which feeling, so it is useless information. Relationship between Catherine and Elizabeth, Reneta and Victoria does not creat enough sensation.

Powerful and Hopeful, Highly Recommended. "Anyone can grow into something beautiful." This statement appears on some copies of Vanessa Diffenbaugh's heartrending yet luminous debut novel THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS. Having read and loved THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS, I find this short statement to be so true, especially of the main character of the story, Victoria. The story opens with Victoria on the morning of her official release from being a ward of the state, from living in a girls group home, on the brink of her journey of discovering life, her passion, and the long, winding road toward love and hope. Victoria grew up shuffled in and out of foster homes. Though her growing up was characterized by awful abuse, at age 10, Victoria was loved by one woman who changed her life, even as their time together ended all too soon. As reflected in the title of the book, Victoria spent her late teen years communicating with others in the language of flowers. With a single bouquet, Victoria relates to and evades others through messages made up of flowers. At age 18, as she plants flowers and seeds in improvised places, in shoes, on carpets, in community gardens, she uncovers her passion -- flowers, and how they help people to communicate a message. Life has damaged Victoria in devastating ways, the least of which is her profound difficulty in relating to other human beings. And though she sabotages attempts others make toward loving her, Victoria gradually opens up in fits and spurts, making progress and regressing, all threaded together with a hope that lures the reader on in the story. The ending does not disappoint, as Ms. Diffenbaugh weaves so well the heartbreak into redemption. This story whispers that even in the most unloveable, unforgivable of pasts, love can triumph. Deep and lavish love at its most beautiful heals Victoria. As I turned the pages of her story, I found myself being healed, as well. I most highly recommend THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS. I look forward to Ms. Diffenbaugh's future works, and mark her debut as one of my lasting and all-time favorite novels.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming. I didn’t know if I’d ever read another book I loved as much as Where the Crawdads Sing. I finally did. This is the one.

Common Thistle. I don't know why I continued to read this book. Victoria is completely unlikable. I did like the concept of the floral arrangements having effects on the recipients based on the meanings of the individual flowers. Other than that, I would be hard-pressed to say anything positive about it. I found myself checking the page numbers frequently and calculating how much more I had to read until it was finished.

The Language of Flowers. As a former foster child, this book pulled at my heartstrings ❤ I think anyone who has felt unworthy at some point in their life would be inspired by this book though..

Beautiful. Loved the book! I'm so happy I bought it. Great for a 20 something reader-

Fascinating.. I'd put this book down, & experience the uneasy feeling something wasn't right with my world - that something wasn't right with ME- & then, when my mind would snap back, would realize it wasn't actually my world I was worried about: It was just weird to be reading a book where I didn't like the protagonist (at all). This is worth a read: An exploration of how damaged people tend to spread their damage to others, what truly inspires change, and the deeper meaning behind "You have to want it."

The Language of Flowers. I really enjoyed this book. It was written in a raw, expressive tone that was different from most books. New, different and enjoyable read! You're certain to enjoy it.

The Language of Flowers. I couldn't put this book down, literally. I enjoyed every single page in it. Such a great story, told by an amazing author.

Great read !!. I loved this book so much ;) such a great read , authors description and verbiage is done wonderfully !! A must read ;)

Loved it!. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this story! I'd probably be using the flower dictionary whenever I receive (or give) flowers to my loved ones.

So romantic and very well written!!!. This book is on of the best I have ever read. I love the the way Victoria and grant spoke through flowers. I couldn't put the book down. Totally enjoyed this book. The only thing that bothered me was when Victoria left the baby alone crying. I wanted to go in the book to pick the baby up. Lol, I guess it's just my motherly instinct.

Love to read.... I read it in one day.... Loved it!
