Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The extraordinary account of James Garfield's rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy, from the bestselling author of The River of Doubt.

"Crisp, concise and revealing history.... A fresh narrative that plumbs some of the most dramatic days in U.S. presidential history." —The Washington Post

James Abram Garfield was one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, a renowned congressman, and a reluctant presidential candidate who took on the nation's corrupt political establishment.

But four months after Garfield's inauguration in 1881, he was shot in the back by a deranged office-seeker named Charles Guiteau. Garfield survived the attack, but become the object of bitter, behind-the-scenes struggles for power—over his administration, over the nation's future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care.

Meticulously researched, epic in scope, and pulsating with an intimate human focus and high-velocity narrative drive, The Destiny of the Republic brings alive a forgotten chapter of U.S. history.

Destiny of the republic. Amazing portrait of the amazing man in James Garfield. Not only a quick and fascinating read, but I am truly thankful I know more about this remarkable man. One of the best biographies I've ever read. Exceptionally writing on display here.

Historical Gem. Few remember the details of the assassination of this great man, but will be fascinated by the details of how James Garfield became President, how he was admired, and how his death effected the direction of the country. So great was his belief in the equality of man, that he was a staunch advocate of equal rights for the freed slaves, that he successfully argued for meaningful change. Never having sought the Presidency, it was a divided Republican Presidential Convention that finally turned to a man they could all respect and trust. Having earned his reputation while a General of the Union army during the Civil War, Garfield returned to his home in Ohio, where he became one of their Senators, raising a family with his wife , Lucretia on the family farm. This was an interesting time in history, when science was on the verge of several discoveries that could have altered the outcome of the attack on the President. The author has researched the time so thoroughly that you will almost feal you are there at Garfield's bedside throughout his treatment, wanting to turn away as the infection takes hold. you will experience the frustration of Alexandwe Graham Bell as he struggles to perfect an invention to locate the bullet in the President. Despite his own tragedy, he persists in trying ,as the entire country prays for some way to help their President . Abraham Lincoln's son, part of James Garfield's government staff is forced to look upon the same fate to is man as was to his father. One of the most endearing relationships was between husband and wife as Lucretia watched over the painful last month of Garfield's life. You can not but be aware of the love they shared together and loss his life meant to her and his children. The strength of Garfield's moral character changed those around him, it was great to reflect how different life was and still can be againl.

Great read. I'm a history buff but I was shocked how little I knew about President Garfield and the times he lived in. Great book! Thanks for shining some light on a man that few know much about.

James Garfield was a great man.... I couldn't put it down...well done!

Great historical story. Not only a wonderful historical book, but also written in a way that tells a great story. You see how these characters in history meet up through events in time. Well done.

Destiny of a Republic. I love reading books about our former Presidents, learning what made them great and how they ascended to the Presidency. This book caught me off guard I wasn't expecting much about Garfield but I found myself turning pages and staying up late to learn about this great man. I now hear the name Garfield and have such a profound respect for a man who did his best, in all aspects of his life.

History in the Flesh. Knowing the last book I had read of Millard's, River of Doubt, was great, I approached this one knowing that lightning rarely strikes twice. I am delighted I gave it a shot, because it was fascinating, albeit at times I was horrified at the treatment Garfield received. I had never really thought of myself as particularly interested In history, but Millard has changed that. I am delighted to have become acquainted with President Garfield, his family and his friends.

Destiny of the Republic. Well written, a suspense novel based on fact. I have read her books on Churchill and Roosevelt, which were both outstanding.

Fascinating History on Several Levels. Excellent work! I knew nothing about President Garfield except he was assassinated. I enjoyed learning about him as a statesman & family man. I am a fan! What he could have accomplished if he had survived! The surrounding accounts of the attending physicians judgements and care was eye opening. Alexander Graham Bell & his involvement was yet another fascinating layer. The life of a genius is difficult. I immediately read the author's book "The River of Doubt" detailing Theodore Roosevelt's perilous journey in South America. Another must read!

Destiny of the Republic. Amazingly good read that owed it all to the author's well written prose and her incredible extensive research!

The Destiny of the Republic. This non fiction book was very informative about the 20th US President, James Garfield. It held the reader's attention far start to finish.

Heart wrenching and glorious. I never learned about Garfield in school. Heck, I could barely remember that he was one of the 4 presidents assassinated in our history. After reading this book I am in awe of him. I actually cried when he died. The author wrote in a way that made me fall in love with him, just as our nation did over 100 years ago. Absolutely a must read. I will forever revere Garfield as a great man, father, husband, and president.

A great read!. Very easy to read and an amazing story of one of our lesser known Presidents.

Fantastic Author. … but I’m about to LOSE IT on these fools at Apple !$@& I’ve bought every Candice Millard book on tape, nobody compares to her but every so often Apple reminds me who wears the pants and tries to trick me into paying for them again. I can’t access my purchases Candice help

An amazing read. Millard did an amazing job with 'Destiny of the Republic.' Each character is beautifully rendered. She imparts a real sense of the mood and struggles of the period, and her story-telling keeps the pages turning. Highly recommended.

Wonderful. One of the finest books I have read in a long time. Thank you.

History written for fiction lovers. This is a remarkably well researched and well written account of the life and death of President James Garfield. Although it is packed with fascinating historical facts it reads like a novel, bringing the characters and the time period into sharp focus for the unintiated reader. Millard does an incredible job bringing to life both the personalities and the politics that shaped this important and nearly forgotten chapter in American History.

Smartly written with characters coming o life. The author took an obscure president struck down at the onset of his office and made me empathize with the varied characters - the assassin, the inventor, the bumbling doctor, the devoted wife, the able assistant, the political cronies and so on. Masterfully written. Meticulously researched. A great read, bringing to prominence a deserving president who could have done so much. Kudos to the author.

Destiny of the Republic. It has been a fantastic experience to read this book and explore a remarkable time in our countries history. The effort is well researched and brilliantly authored.

Superb History. This book enlightened me about a president of whom I knew very little. The author brought him to life as well as the times. The information about Dr. Lister and Alexander graham bell was also interesting as their lives all entertwined. We often forget the connections that occur in life as well as the personal nature of all of us famous or otherwise. She has brought an insight into the human frailties and strengths of us all.

Destiny of the republic. This was an excellent book well written sir certainly learned a lot from it thank you Dr. James or Appleton Junior

Destiny of the Republic - fascinating !. What an interesting book/ man. What a shame he could not fulfill his personal destiny without being shot and killed. It sounds as if he could have fast forwarded the civil rights and women's rights movements at least 75 years.

Lost History. A slow miserable death for a man who deserved much better, but like so many of his generation, Garfield was sacrificed for the status quo. Well written similar to the O'Reilly "killing" series. It's a page turner.

A good, but not great book. I characterize a great book as one I can't put down. A bad book, such as Keith Richards' autobiography, is one I find excuses not to pick up. This falls in between. I wanted to finish the book, and I was glad when I hit the last page. Plenty of historical detail, but what seems as if what should be a "big" story with multiple points of view, is less than meets the eye. Illuminating, but yet somewhat disappointing...

Another winner for Millard!. Ms. Millard has proven once again that she is a presidential historian destined to inspire readers for years to come. This second book, "Destiny of the Republic" is well researched and crafted like a thriller. Thanks for a great read, and looking forward to he next subject.

Excellent book!. This is a must read! Looking forward to what the author will write next!

Excellent read. An amazingly detailed account of the intersecting lives of James Garfield, his assassin Charles Guiteau, and Alexander Graham Bell. It is a thoroughly researched and marvelously written novel that anyone who loves the United States and her intricate history is sure to appreciate.

Amazing History Book. I would have enjoyed history so much more enthusiastically if we read books like this one back in high school. Reading like a novel, the book explores historical, scientific, and sociological aspects of Garfield's life and times. Great read for all.

Destiny of the Republic. The best book I have ever read . Couldn't put it down for a minute . The story was one i didn't know about an one I won't forget about .

Destiny of the Republic. An excellent story of one of America's forgotten presidents. Millard makes the reader wonder how history might have been different had Garfield survived. He seemed to have the makings of a great president. Ultimately a very sad and frustrating story, but expertly told.

What a great story!. I had no idea how much I would come to love James Garfield and what an impact he would have on our nation! Everyone in Congress should be required to read this to remind all of them why they are there in the first place. A must read.

Destiny of the republic. What a wonderful book. Candace Millard has a way of making these historical figures come to life. The narrative voice was that of a historical fiction novel without the fiction. Can't wait to read her other book and feel about the Roosevelt family like I do the Garfields.

Destiny of the Republic. I usually read fiction but if all non-fiction were as enjoyable as this book, I would consider reading more of them. Very informative and well-written, it pulls you right in at the beginning and doesn't let go until the final page. I even went through all the notes near the end. I may have to make a pilgrimage to Mentor, OH and Washington, DC to visit the sites that Ms. Millard visited for her research.

Wow. What a great story line that read itself. Never know how the lives of Garfield, Bell, Lister, etc were so intertwined and subsequently defining a slice of our history and future.

Very detailed and insightful look. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. It's written in a historical fashion with modern comparisons to help the reader understand what was going on. If you liked this book you should also check out "manhunt" about j Wilkes booth

Destiny of the Republic is excellent. Not knowing anything about the Garfield presidency other than his assassination attempt, I was astounded by the dramatic and historic detail that went into this book. Excellent...two thumbs up!!

Great book!. Well written and very interesting, but also quite sad. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of America. I learned so much not only about President Garfield but the era.

Page turner !. Wow! I love books like this that weave direct source historical accounts into a story that reads like a page-turning novel. It provided a fascinating window both into President Garfield, who is not nearly familiar enough given his significance, as well as the U.S. at a time of great growth and growing pains.

Destiny of the Republic. An amazing book that put life into man history had forgotten. Garfield was extraordinary. I think America would be a better place had he been left to serve. So sad.

Destiny of the Republic. Great read about a remarkable American who also happened to become President.

Good Book. An informative, enlightening accounting of the life and death of James Garfield, an American president who I knew very little about. What a heroic and tragic figure he was and Millard tells the tale in a easy to understand and enjoyable way. A good book for history buffs...EAF

A fascinating read. Millard's book reads like fiction--I couldn't put this book down. I am so grateful to have become acquainted with Garfield, a man and president about whom I knew nothing before being introduced to this book. Even though the reader knows Garfield's fate, one can't help pulling for him while reading about the desperate medical care he received and shedding a tear for his loved ones and our nation when reading about his agonizing and senseless death.

Fascinating. A very interesting history, very well written.
